four prince george's county police officers suspended after the son of a dc cop says they beat him and resolution after one of the tightest races in the country. tonight we finally have a winner in virginia's 11 congressional district. i'm peggy fox in fairfax. in a statement congratulating his opponent jerry connolly on his victory. the decision not to pursue a recount despite a loss of 4% was welcome news to jerry connolly who spent the weekend in the hospital with a blood clot. >> my heart is at full functioning, my vital signs are all normal. >> reporter: he says he may change his minds about a recounts if the state finds errors but connie connolly says he is not worried. >> reporter: the gaff about packing heat at virginia tech along with an influx of money

made the difference says a republican tom davis. >> they will draw the lines and how you draw the lines in north virginia is destiny. four officers suspended after allegations of police brutality by a dc police officer's son. after an encounter with a prince george's county officer that was moonlighting. he said he was beaten after being pushed by the crowd into the officer that was guarding the door. police did not call for medical help despite the injuries. the police officer along with three others who at the scene have been suspended.

moonlighting at the converted warehouse has been ban by the police chief but county officials have shut down the party space for lack of an occupancy permit. this is bruce johnson in the trinidad neighborhood. trying to a motive in the shootings of two young men. the 17-year-old boy is dead. his friend wounded. they were shot last night in the 1300 block of holbrook street. >> they shot his friend first and then called the police on a cell phone and i guess they shot him. shot him four times. >> reporter: grief counselors were dispatched to the high school in northeast today. joseph is a senior here. >> never had any beef with anybody. >> we come here to help students avoid the perils in their community. >> reporter: putting the grief

into words today. >> life was short. it was just yesterday. who would have thought he would be gone today. let's say just life is short. >> in less than one hour american university staff and students will gather to remember the life and work of murdered professor sue markham. the university is holding a remembrance ceremony for her at 8:00 p.m. in the bender arena. she was killed in her bethesda home two weeks ago and so far police have not charged anyone in that murder. akron man accused of trying to help al-qaeda bomb metro stations says he is not guilty. that was his plea today in arraignment. the pakistan-born u.s. citizen said he plotted with people he thought were members of al- qaeda but those people turned out to be undercover federal agents. the trial is scheduled to begin in april. bus is turning. that's the announcement you

might start hearing coming from metro buses along several routes right here in dc. the unstuffed dc metro blog posted video this morning so we went out to find out what riders think of the plan that is supposed to avoid pedestrian accidents. >> the bus is turning. three or four blocks. >> reporter: calvin is already pretty familiar with that new caution message from some metro buses in north eastern dc. >> that's a good idea. >> can't hear that well. >> reporter: the washington metro transit authority says the shouting buses are part of a test program to help keep pedestrians safer when a bus turns the corner. >> the bus driver and the buses are more safe now that they got cameras on the outside of the bus. but the pedestrians now you have to look out for. >> reporter: so far out of 2500 bus drivers, only a rare few actually operate these buses.

we saw this bus at an intersection. >> when they go across they don't know the bus is turning or going straight. that would help. >> reporter: riders say it is a welcome change. >> just have to recap. >> reporter: and even with buses literally screaming their way around the corner some pedestrians say it is still up to you to stay out of their way. >> it is a little safer. >> reporter: the transit authority says this is only a pilot program so it may be awhile before the talking buses show up at your bus stop. and the metro transit authority a bit stingy with the information today. they wouldn't tell us how much it costs to out fit buses with those loud speakers and when and if they plan to take the program city wide. time to check the evening rush. richard? >> driving the beltway now both loops are still slow although speeds are picking up

gradually. also, as we are driving now in virginia southbound 395 still that slow spot. a couple of brake lights there but speeds are picking up in that area as well. southbound i-95 going from below the beltway. it will pick up beyond that point. no problems reported this hour in the district at the 3rd street tunnel or outbound new york avenue. topper is here with that 9 forecast first. top, can we keep this going until i don't know, march? >> i like your thinking but can he can't. very nice evening. for tonight, skies become partly cloudy. clear right now. few clouds after midnight. kind of cold. some upper 40s

walked into mike aldridge's barber shop and he said he was not in even though he it turns out was the barber. hours later when dr. fisher saw him cutting someone else's hair he confronted him about and aldridge said he was embarrassed since dr. fisher was black he did not want to give him a bad haircut. he says he has trouble cutting black folk's hair. we asked fans on our facebook page what they thought, racism or honesty? brandon miller says that's honesty. i would respect a barber for the not letting me look bad over trying to make a quick buck. another saying i don't see anything wrong with him being honest but he has to ask himself if he is a barber if he can't cut certain grades of hair. and stewart ryanhart says he should have said something. he was probably embarrassed. not racist but just a poor choice. i got a note while it has been a few years since i have had to

"entertainment tonight" and we learned who will replace mary hart. nancy o'dell will take over the co-anchoring duties with mark steines at the end of 2011. it is on at 7:30 p.m. right here on wusa 9. yesterday we told you that sikh organizations have reported that they have been told by the csa to expect enhance the search techniques to make sure their turbans aren't hiding anything on flights. sikh groups are already complaining about it but will from springfield said don't bother. the airlines have the right and spoajt to refuse service to anyone they feel exhibits a potential risk to their passenger's safety. it is common sense not a bill of right's issue to view is with suspicion that would claim the right of religious expression. similar sentiments from lisa.

sorry, sikhs but if you want to fly be prepared to sacrifice some personal privacy and/or dignity just like the rest of us. this post-9/11 world security and safety trump tradition and religion every time. but omar sees it differently. in my opinion you can hide harmful items in all manner of head ware -- headwear. we have all got to take off our head gear, shoes, jackets and everything else. right through that x-ray machine. the real question might be why should they be singled out? religious freedom. even now according to reports sikhs will not be forced to remove their headwear just commit to a pat down. this is where somebody's right
