thanks for joining us. veterans day ceremonies are taking place all over the country today and especially here in washington.

kristin fisher spent the morning at the world war ii memorial ♪ [ music ] >> reporter: about 800 world war ii veterans from -- about 100 world war ii veterans from across the country spent this morning at their memorial in washington ♪ [ music ] this ceremony, of course, honored all veteranning but this year there was a special focus on honoring the women of world war ii. and for that reason the keynote speaker was none other than general anne dunnwoody. the first female four star general in the united states. >> today, on this special day, we are here to remind ourselves that half of the greatest generation were women. and more than 350,000 of them served in uniform during the second world war. >> she's a very lovely lady.

>> reporter: retired agent is mueller served in the women's auxiliary corps in 1942. she was invited to present a wreath at the freedom wall of stars. >> i'm very honored they wanted me to come and i thoroughly enjoyed it. it was very impressive because it is very nice ♪ [ music ] [ playing "taps "] >> reporter: in washington, kristin fisher, 9 news now. construction on a mel yam dedicated to -- memorial dedicated to disabled service members is underway. yesterday, hundreds of veterans and guests gathered on the southwest side of the capitol for the ground breaking ceremony. the 2 pitch 5-acre site is dedicated to the millions of living veterans were disabled by their service. organizers want to formally dedicate the memorial on veteran's day in 2012. the website ancestry.com is

president obama shook hands with south korea's president but couldn't strike a trade deal. the sticking point, access to south korea's lucrative auto market. >> we don't want months to pass before we get this done. we want this to be done in a matter of weeks. >> reporter: thousands of protesters rallied in the streets, claiming world's powers aren't taking responsibility for the financial crisis. police arrested a woman who threatened to set herself on fire. it's not peaceful inside the summit either. so far, g-20 leaders condition agree on the agenda, much less a draft statement on the way forward in the financial crisis. they have one more day to figure it out. charlie d'agata, cbs news. federal workers have the day off and many are talking about comments by house minority leader john boehner. the ohio republican is talking about a pay freeze for federal

road rage incident. u.s. park police say the 47- year-old andrew dunn opened fire on a driver after a near collision along powder mill road near the baltimore- washington parkway on sunday. fortunately the victim was not injured, but he told police exactly what happened and he described the suspect and police arrested dunn on tuesday. an off-duty prince georges county police officer exchanged gun fire with a would be robber early this morning. a department spokesperson says the plain clothes officer was getting out of his car in the 8500 block of greenbelt road. a man approached him in the apartment complex parking lot and demanded his wallet. at some point, the suspect fired and then fled when the officer returned fire. the officer has a bullet hole in his jacket, but he was not injured. defense attorneys and in she chandra levy murder trial could complete their case as early as monday. prosecutors dropped think

attempted sexual assault charge against ingmar guandique kidnapping and murder charges, however, still stand. levy was the washington intern found murdered in rock creek park back in 2002. yesterday, prosecutors revealed that dna belonging to former representative gary condit, was found in levy's underwear. it is believed that the two were romantically linked. condit never admitted anything. amazon has pulled a book that is caused a storm of controversy. the title is "the pedophile's guide to love and pleasure, a child lover's code of conduct." 2,000 amazon users complained about the book by phillip grieves. amazon said it does not support hatred or criminal acts but supports an individual's right to make their own purchasing decisions. metro is confirming some

details of a horrifying story about a mother, who got separated from her baby on the green line. the "washington post" reports that the train took off with the baby in the stroller leaving the woman frantic on the platform. the baby was turned over to authorities at the fort totten station and eventually reunited with the mother. metro says there are indications that the woman was trying to force the stroller on to a crowded car. 9 news now spoke with the metro transit board chairman, peter benjamin about the safety of the system's escalators. six people were injured on october 80th while riding an escalator -- on october 30th while riding an escalator at l'enfant station. benjamin says they must strip the escalators down and rebuild each by hand because they are so old and out of production. >> we don't want any passenger ever to be injured, and safety is a key thing that we all have to adopt as our number one

workers began to clean up the damage from the conservative party headquarters. students smashed signs after a demonstration over rising tuition costs. police arrested 32 people. 14 were injured including seven officers. the stranded cruiseship off of the coast of california will be back in port in a few hours. a fire on board carnival's splendor took away power to the massive cruise liner. right now, tug boats are pulling the ship back to san diego sandra hughs reports that passengers cannot wait to get back on land. >> the nightmare carnival cruise is over. the team of tug boats gently guided the ship in to san diego's port this morning tugs

have been slowly towing the ship from the waters off of mexico where it broke down on monday. for four days the almost 8500 passengers and crew have been without air conditioning, hot food and just about everything that runs on electricity. passengers are telling horror stories about bathroom facilities that didn't work for the first two days. >> people getting upset and frustrated by the toilet situation. couldn't flush and quite a big smell issue on the ship. >> reporter: there were two hour lines for food like spam and poptarts but despite the challenges, passengers say they pulled together. >> by and large, people have been really nice to one another and there's almost a camaraderie among the passengers because we are all going there the same ordeal. >> with no working elevators, carnival says getting all the passengers off the splendor could take hours. they promise to be ready with hotel an flight reservations for the passengers. >> we're going to be providing a variety of assistance once

it is back to the drawing board for virginia governor bob mcdonnell and his plan to privatize the commonwealth's liquor control system. the "washington post" reports the governor had hired a financial management company to come up with a new plan to privatize the state's 32 stores. it's believed that privatization would bring in about $458 million. however, some lawmakers say the plan could cost the state $47 million in annual revenue. the thirsty turtle now is without a liquor license.

the troubled college bar surrendered its license last night. the move came moments before the hearing with the prince georges county liquor control board. the bar has been a problem spot for police lately after four people were stabbed last month. according to police, bartenders also served alcohol to minors. a reminder for you that food drive 9 is underway. it's an easy way for you to help people this thanksgiving season. some of you received plastic bags in the mail, and we need you to fill those bags up with nonperishable food items. boy scouts will pick up the bags on saturday, or you can take your donations to a safeway store. all of the donations go to the capital area food bank. and it's a wonderful organization. >> yeah. everybody is doing a great job with that. we have been doing this for year and we hope you will help us help them. >> please, please, open your heart. what a beautiful day today. >> what a contrast to what was

going on this day in 1987. remember that day. >> no. what happened. >> the famous veteran's day snowstorm. >> oh, my goodness. >> it is interesting. look at these cars moving. kids didn't get home at school until 9:00 because it snowed so heavily. parts of prince georges county had 15 inches. north and west of town didn't get that much but west had 11 1/2 inches of snow and that said we didn't have a lightning detection network or the doppler radar. so this was a system unforecast early and caught us by surprise. what a great day 23 years later. for this veteran's day, a big thank you to our veterans past and present we very much appreciate what you do for us. day planner in washington, this afternoon, 3:00 temperature, sunny and 61 degrees. the wind direction is north at 8. through this evening,

relative to that 57, the humidity is dry, 34% and a good thing it is not windy, we may have a fire danger. show you national temperatures. this sort of tells the story between spring-like weather in the south an wenter in the northwestern corner of the country through the rockies. temperatures in the 30s. there's been snow in the mountains. 72 little rock and atlanta. and the warmth will head our way as we head in to the weekend. a little bit of a warmup. we have been watching the snow in the mountains. come out of denver in to wyoming and parts of de nebraska. rain showers in the middle of the country. problem is the storm is still spinning in the atlantic. three days of wet, cool weather in the northeast and new england. they are finally shaking the rain. a few clouds southeast mass but because of the big storm the atlantic things have been been moving in much. high pressure is moving in and this high is blocked by this storm and this high is blocking the next storm. like a traffic jam in thes a
