hoped to clear out the place by lunch hour. now, you can see it's, like, a symphony. they are pretty much wrapping up. but tree over there took a lot longer to cut down. now the power company, in a very intricate job of trying to let place the poles and the power lines since the storm blew through. dante amoya woke up to backyard. the large tree averred over george mason drive. the poles left hanging in power lines. this one at 60th and harrison came crashing down on this person's car. >> it was scary. i didn't know what was going

on. the house was about to, like, blow over. >> reporter: a fleet of power crews were dispatched to repair several downed poles and power lines. a solution was found to being powerless. >> i have nothing to do in here. >> no power. >> no tv. i can't make food. i was like, "i'll go shopping." >> dante thankful the tree fell down in the opposite direction of his home. . >> i thought about it all morning: sixty three people in the dark. only the doctor's offices.

back here, they are wrapping up. they should be cleared up within the hour. live here arlington. >> thank you for that cerre. a large tree came down sometime before 3 a.m., blocking all four lanes near street. crews were able to get it all but one inbound lane open in time for the morning rush in time for the busy artery. baltimore's mayor said it was a miracle no one was killed or severely hurt when high winds toppled trees and took the roofs off several homes. people who live there insist a tornado. the storm hit the baltimore area. between 1:30 and 2 this morning, the damage forced about 100 people from the homes. in philadelphia high winds blew over signs, collapsed roofs and uprooted trees throughout the area.

the storm caused major damage in montgomery county. about 17,000 people woke up without region. >> not just the trees, but the power lines sparked a fire in scott plains, new jersey. the trees brought down the lines, which shot up a ball fire. >> 65 miles per hour gusts in trenton new jersey. part of a hangar roof blown off as well. the power lines knocked down leg trips to to 20,000 customers around trenton. crews still assessing the extent of the storm damage. >> the high winds still blowing around here at this hour. tom? >> a couple of good things. we have some good news. the wind advisory has been canceled, expired. we have wind gusts, but nothing damaging. don't think we'll see an investigation of the possible tornado downtown. they are investigating the storm up in baltimore as a possible tornado.

we were here until 2:00 yesterday; and for the most part, they were just incredible straight-line winds. some of the storms were moving at 70 miles per hour. right now the winds are -- you know, they're still out there. 25 miles per hour wind gusts downtown, and 28 miles per hour wind gusts up in hagerstown, but nothing exceeding the 20s, which is good. no 30s or 40s, like earlier. temperaturewise, about average. feels cooler with the wind. 54 in andrews, 52 in frederick. cross the quidivide and in the 30s for oakland. for tonight, keeping it partly cloudy. breezy and colder, lows 38 and 44. winds west northwest at 10 to 20. we'll come become and talk about what tomorrow will bring with a look ahead into the weekend. lesley. >> hopefully it's calmer. we are still awaiting a verdict in the chandra levy murder trial.

reopened, because results of the medical examiner's report. now earlier today, washington's ethiopian community staged a rally to protest the return of the liquor license to the club. the protesters believe the club's coowner and employees are responsible for beating alley muhammad to death.

prosecutors dropped the charges after the medical examiner had not determined the cause of death. another hearing is set for december 1st. a crackdown on both the national levels when it comes to energy drinks. the fda doing the first step at getting them off store shelves saying the powerful combination is too dangerous. today maryland state officials asked the beverage industry to stop selling the products, and they agreed. >> jose naverett. >> the most i had was one and a half. i felt like i was having the time of my life. >> reporter: but the fda today issued a warning letter to four companies that make alcoholic energy drinks, saying mixing the two is a public health concern. >> a person becomes intoxicated to the extreme. when the caffeine wears off, there are blackouts that occur. >> the drinks have nicknames

like liquid cocaine and blackout in a can. they are especially on college campuses. a can of the most popular brand contains the alcohol of four to five beers, plus a strong jolt of caffeine. >> the caffeine impairs the ability of the drinker to tell they're drunk. >> fusion projects which makes one of the most popular drinks announced it's taking the alcohol out. the mixes banned in four states. students in washington state are stocking up before the ban takes effect on thursday. >> we sold 30 cases just this morning. as for jose -- >> it messs with your heart. >> the companies that make the alcoholic energy drinks have 15 days to respond to the letter. they're being warned the government can start seizeing the drinks if companies -- a regional task force recommending some dramatic changes at metro. the panel is calling for

they'll have to fill it out, not guilty or guilty, and then, if they find him not guilty on the first-degree charge, they can move down to a second- degree murder charge. jurors did get a whole mess of evidence back in the jury room. . the lawyers spent all morning arguing specifically which items and which testimony allowing jurors to look at. susan levy is in the courtroom, standing by, waiting to hear what the verdict might be nine years -- more than nine years after her daughter disappeared in crock creek park. this has been an awful.

the driver crashed his expedition into a tanker truck on i-95. the driver was taken to the hospital after all this. a suspected international arms dealer appeared before a federal judge this afternoon to face terrorism charges. russian born victor boot claims his innocence. as vick for inez -- >> reporter: he's been called the merchant of death, accused of supplying weapons worldwide. prosecutors say -- in a new york courtroom, the former military officer charged with conspiring to kill u.s. agents. >> this notorious criminal. >> reporter: boot was arrested during a sting operation in thailand. informants posing as members of the terrorist group batter said they wanted weapons to kill

officers. authorities say boot offered to sell missiles and guns. >> he said he preferred murdering americans. >> reporter: booth accused of delivering weapons that fueled civil wars around the globe, believed to be worth millions. his exploits believed to have inspired the 2005 movie "lord of war," and the arms dealer played by nicholas cage. >> inside the courtroom, he wore a t-shirt and answered questions. he faces life in prison if convicted, but the 48-year-old says he's been wrongly accused, and the russian government degrees. >> russia fought hard to keep him from being taken by authorities. the charges against him come days before president obama and russia's president attend a nato meeting in portugal. the white house says the tug of war over the suspected dealers. . cbs news, new york.

if you've been to the tomb of the unknown, you'll see the soldiers who guard it with expert precision. >> they are part of an elite old guard that conducts military honors at funerals there. new at 5:30, peggy fox reports today, the soldiers had to bury one of their own. >> reporter: the somber beat of the drum and the slow-moving cason turned a bright sunny day into sadness. a young wife, a father and mother, loved ones from florida to pennsylvania and dozens of soldiers were here to say good- bye to sergeant adam dickmeyer. the recently married 26-year- old died in afghanistan. >> three years ago, you could

have found him here at arlington, a member of the infant industry regiment, guarding the tomb with exact precision. after serving six years in the old guard, his family requested an assignment change and wound up in afghanistan. he was killed october in the kandahar province when insurgents attacked his unit with an ied. he becomes the 181st service member who died in afghanistan to be buried here at arlington. >> probably the most emotional part of it, knowing he's going to receive the same escort at arlington that he provided for so many. >> reporter: a posting on facebook said: "the fellowship lost a brother in action. because of men like him, we sleep well in our beds tonight. may you rest well."
