from the ceiling platform. kristin fisher is joining us live from metro headquarters. officials, of course, are talking about the latest safety concerns. kristin? >> reporter: metro says this was not their fault. they say it was ddot's fault. when contractors were building a median on connecticut avenue over the farragut north metro platform yesterday, metro knew about the construction. ddot had a permit for it but the contractors dug too deep into the ground and caused a chunk of concrete the size of a human head to fall and land on a bench right next to the platform or excuse me, landed on a bench on the platform. incredibly, nobody was hurt. now the big question is, why did it take metro over an hour to notify emergency personnel? i asked that very question to peter benjamin just minutes ago. here's what he had to say.
12:02 pm
>> it's not clear to me that any passenger was ever in danger after the first incident occurred. in other words, the issue that happened here was construction above the metro station, which stopped immediately. as soon as it stopped, all of the danger stopped. it was immediately investigated and all of those actions took place that were appropriate, including sealing everything up. >> reporter: now, the other big safety concern discussed at this morning's meeting was metro's ongoing escalator issues. remember the incident on the national mall where an escalator suddenly started speeding up? we've known for some time it was caused by a brake failure. the brakes simply couldn't hold that huge crowd of people. today we learned metro has inspected 566ful 588 and it turns out 50 were found to have similar problems with the braking system. so that means that the same type of acceleration could have

happened on any of those 50 escalators. now 40 of the brakes have been replaced, 10 repaired and 16 are out of service. going forward, metro says the solution is to increase the frequency of their inspections. right now, metro tests the breaks every quarter. that's going to change. metro will start testing them every month. back to you, jc. >> thank you very much, kristin fisher reporting live. according to metro, farragut north is the fourth busiest metro station in the system. in 2009, on an average weekday, 25,000 people entered and exited the station. only union station, metro center and gallery place were busier. a u.s. park police officer fired his gun at a suspect. investigators are now trying to figure out why. we first told you about this story this morning. it happened in the 2500 block of southern avenue southeast near the suitland parkway.

powers to provide protection to transport cop electric band. his attorney says that semic is a small part in a much wider scandal. >> reporter: what has happened since friday has been a frenzy. i think everybody needs to realize the process needs to work itself out and let this thing go forth in the normal course. that's what i was asking for today. >> semic was ordered held without bail. >> lesli johnson, the wife of the prince george's county executive jack johnson is also charged in this corruption probe. she was elected this month to the county council. there is now an online petition calling for her to step down. the petitioners say if johnson does not step down, they will "protest daily and block her from taking the position." state election laws do not prevent johnson from taking office on december 6th. today, the house ethics
