avenue when pieces of concrete fell through the ceiling. >> i mean, it was really loud and it was getting louder as they kind of worked their way down through the concrete until eventually they dislodged a chunk. >> a couple feet long. >> reporter: it all happened wednesday afternoon, but metro did not shut down the station until five hours later. for structural engineers to inspect the damage and deem the dome safe. >> we initially blocked off that area of the station, we stopped a few trains from servicing the station. so we did take very many incremental steps along the way. >> it's always interesting to second guess what should have happened. in this particular case, looking at it, nay did the right -- they did the right thing. >> reporter: how does something like that happen? >> that's what is being investigated. how did the contractor do that? >> reporter: metro says for one, the incident is not their

>> thank you. an accident disrupted the redline traffic today. it hit a piece of track equipment. it returned to the station to get those passengers out. trains tracked through the area for an hour before it was cleared. service is now back to normal. we have an update now on a body found in a box in frederick county. >> a road crew on i-70 made the discovery. the victim is identified as 36- year-old jacobo vazquez of massachusetts avenue northwest. district police say he was shot to death last friday and then stuffed in a card board box found along the highway last tuesday. a felony arrest warrant has been issued for the 34-year- old, marvin palencia, of hyattsville. his picture is there. he was last seen driving a 2007 light green or gray honda odyssey. it's a minivan with maryland tags reading "palncia." court documents show

prosecutors expect lancaster to admit his part in the murder of the middle school principal. police found him murdered inside his silver springs home back in april. another suspect, saunders, pleaded guilty for his role in the murder last week. a former manassas teacher faces charges tonight. sexually abusing a german foreign exchange student during the night of heavy drinker. the formerring english teacher is serving a one-year service for molesting a 16-year-old student. he faces additional charges in virginia and north carolina. we are still waiting for a verdict in the chandra levy murder trial. jurors just finished their second day of deliberations without a decision on the fate of ingmar guandique. bruce leshan is live outside dc superior court where he has been keeping an eye on all the

developments. anything new at all, bruce? >> reporter: anita, the jurors were set to head home. all that we can tell you is that they appear to still be getting along. there were huge long lines into the courthouse this morning because of a security change updating the security, more security. and some of the jurors, about half a dozen of them were a few rows back from me. we can't show you their picture, but i can tell you that they were laughing and joking and seemed to be getting along pretty well right now. whether that is a sign of them getting along in the jury room and not having to come to any big disagreement at this point. and i will tell you that there is a ton, a ton of evidence in this case. and some of the courthouse observers expect that they are simply going through that, looking at the pictures, looking at the evidence and trying to figure out what happened nine years ago. it is not unusual in a case here at dc superior court for a

murdered jury to be out for a long time. some say that they could be out for seven to ten days. it's been nine years since chandra levy was murdered in rock creek park. another day or two for the jury to decide whether ingmar guandique did it, perhaps not unusual. if we get a verdict, we'll bring it to you live. back to you. >> all right, bruce, thank you. university of maryland campus police are looking for a robbery suspect. they say a student was robbed last night in the parking garage. the victim told police the suspect came up behind her in the stairwell and ordered her to give up everything. that suspect got away with her cell phone and student i.d. card, but she was not hurt. police want to know why an officer fired his weapon at a traffic stop tonight. police say the officer opened fire at the driver who then took off. the driver was not hit. he was later taken into custody

at southern and branch avenues. a stafford county school bus driver has hit her job after being accused of showing an inappropriate photo on her cell phone to some kids. a school spokeswoman tells 9news now that the driver was immediately taken off her route. there's no word as to what was on that photo. child protective services and the stafford county sheriff's office are on this case. we've got breaking news in ohio where the coroner says three bodies have been found. she would not say whether or not the bodies were that of a mother, her young son, and a family friend who disappeared in mount vernon more than a week ago. the knox county coroner said that the bodies were found in a rural area. helicopter video shows emergency vehicles parked at the end of the field near thick woods. workers walking down a green tarp set down among the trees. a 13-year-old girl who was also missing was found in the basement of a 30-year-old man's home, charged of kidnapping. the sheriff is expected to give a news conference this weekend.

we'll bring you the information when it becomes available. german authorities say the discovery of the suspicious suitcase bound for munic was working. it was found in the airport. that suitcase was meant to be put on a flight. authorities say there were no explosives found in the bag. the discovery comes one day after german intelligence said that they had received a tip about an impending attack. celebrating mass at local catholics at the st. paul in rome today. this weekend, he will be elevated to cardinal by pope benedict at the vatican. it is also the first time that cardinals from around the world will meet with the pope to discuss sex abuse by priests. new research shows distracted driving is on the rise along the capitol beltway. the area hosted two of the

going to the great hang up page on wusa9.com, or call 202-895- 5960. sky 9 flew over woodbridge where a car came crashing through a house. tonight, this home on alabama avenue has been condemned. that's the damage right there. officers say the driver of a toyota camry somehow ended up off the road and drove right into the house. no one inside was hurt, i should say. the driver did suffer some minor injuries. police are still trying to figure out what caused the crash. plans are underway to expand interstate 270 between montgomery and frederick county. two lane wills be added between 370 and frederick. u.s. 15 will also grow by one lane on each side for about seven miles north of the interchange of i-70. here's the catch. finding the $3.4 billion to pay for it, also, the work is not expected to be done until the year 2030. let's check a check of our

dow finished the day up 173 points. and nasdaq climbed 38 points and s&p 500 rose 18 points. perhaps that's because gm

got a very warm welcome back on wall street. just a year after emerging from bankruptcy, the company's new stock offering could end up as the nation's largest ever, raising over $23 billion. alexis joins us live with the story from the new york stock exchange. >> reporter: good morning, that's right, general motors drove back on to wall street today. the icon of american manufacturing returns the light as the publicly traded company and one of the biggest stock offerings in history. it was general motor's day on wall street. from the new cars parked outside, to the smiling ceo ringing the opening bell. there were even special soundeffects. gm's public offering started at $33 a share, and closed over $34. plus, it triggered a broader rally that boosted the dow, 170 points. >> great day not only for detroit, for wall street, but for main street because gm

definitely transcends everything. >> reporter: perhaps most important, gm's return as a public company seems to be reassuring its customers. they were on the verge of buying a japanese car until they heard about gm's success on wall street. >> we were trying to decide if we would go hyundai, toyota, whatever. and then after this we said no, we're going to go back to chevy. >> reporter: from the dealership to the stock market, gm's offer is a big deal. since the government is unloading more than half of its stake to the auto maker. >> they are now positioned to recover more than my administration invested in gm. >> reporter: they predict their recovery will continue. >> i think that most american car industries have been the healthiest. >> reporter: for gm dealers, it feels like a turning point. >> was today a good day? absolutely. >> reporter: during the darkerdays of chapter 11, gm shareholders were wiped out. the company is promising this time that it will be different.

be censured by his peers, meaning he would be escorted to the front of the house chamber and receive a public review from the speaker. he condemns he was not corrupt, just careless and admits he made mistakes. the so-called barefoot bandit pleaded not guilty today for charges against teenager coolton harris -- colton harris moore, when he escaped from a halfway house near seattle two years ago. the odyssey ended with his arrest on the stolen boat in the bahamas. the smithsonians set off a sparkling new setting for the most visited object in the museum collection. the hope diamond. it's actually a temporary setting called embracing hope. i would like to embrace some of that hope. this is the first time the diamond is being exhibited in a new setting and it's time to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the historic donation of the hope diamond. it was designed at harry winston incorporated. the setting was chosen by the public in an online vote.

a rare look today at a rare animal. two-week old panda made its national television debut this morning. a little butter stick there. the early looks at the atlanta zoo came courtesy of the early show. >> it is well hydrated. you can see his belly, he is managing really well. his fur is growing great, the skin looks perfect. his color is pink. it's a great indication that he is very healthy. >> and it's a boy as you heard. there are now 11 giant pandas in the u.s. and two of them are here in washington. according to chinese traditions, the atlanta zoo will wait 100 days to name its new male cub. >> his eyes aren't even open. >> it's amazing how little they are. they don't stay little forking long. >> usually like puppies are cuter than their adult self, but they get cuter as they get

older. we have some wind today with the clouds. relatively quiet in the scheme of things. we are headed for a temperature roller coaster. temperature wise, 50s in some upper 40s. because of the breezes, it feels a little bit cooler. we eluded to that yesterday. so grab a jacket before you go out. 49 in reston and 48 in sterling. 50 in rockville, 52 downtown. generally low to mid-50s out towards college park and laurel. so you know, it's about average temperaturewise for the wind and it feels a little colder. we'll take you out to the pacific northwest. a pretty big storm here. in fact, it's been snowing out there for quite some time. in the meantime, we had a little system push through all the sprinkles were right by the mountains. now we're looking at clearing skies. speaking of the cascades, we have some video for you. this is from, look at this, this is pretty nice. cascade snow, king county in washington. now, the snow level is actually down to about a thousand feet. it's actually that cold. another two to five inches between a thousand feet and

2,500 feet and up to 6 to 12 inches in some of the higher elevations. good time out in the cascades. okay, let's go back to the computer. we'll talk about, well, really what's going to happen. chilly tomorrow, but milder again on saturday. tonight, clearing and cold. sunny and chilly on friday. breezy and milder on saturday. and then chilly again on sunday. so really, it's kind of a temperature roller coaster. not crazy differences, but almost 10 degree differences between every day. for tonight then, we're looking at clearing skies, breezy, cold. 34 to 32. we'll have the northwest winds at 10 to 15. making it feel a little colder than it is. tomorrow morning, mostly sunny with a cold start. grab your shades and a light jacket. 30s and 40s. notice the winds are only at 10. that's good. by the afternoon, mostly sunny and chilly. high temperatures, low 50s. the winds are now turning south, southwest at 10. that's the harbor of some milder air that will roll in here on saturday. next three days, 53 tomorrow, chilly tomorrow night for the high school football game.

we've got maryland that will be chilly for the game, the 8:00 game. it's nice during the day at 60, then it gets chilly at night. there's that chilly day on sunday. plenty of sunshine, yes, but highs only in the low 50s. next seven days, well, it gets chilly on sunday, mild again on monday, 60. and then milder on tuesday. it has not changed that much. some showers getting in late on tuesday and tuesday night. that's becoming a big travel day as well. then 55 on wednesday with just rain, rain here, rain in the mid-atlantic, rain in the ohio valley, rain in the tennessee valley. so it is better than snow, but it will impact travel. then maybe some rain showers early on turkey day and maybe we end the day with a slick time. wouldn't that be nice? >> my kids are asking for that. >> you see that? look at this picture. >> oh wow. look at that. >> this is the trout pond located from the national forest in west virginia, just above maryland. it was taken just a couple weeks ago, 32 degrees, light snowfalling.

to potential bone marrow donors. and what this man looks to be the likely venue for britain's royal wedding. are students getting away with cheating at a local high school? that's the question that several parents at west potomac high school are saying tonight. new at 5:30, peggy fox reports that they are outraged over a new policy, designed to separate academic learning from the behavior. i think that they are just setting them up for failure down the road. >> reporter: that's what many people think at the new policy that allows students caught cheating to retake the tests. >> and there is a majority of the students who don't cheat, dedicating themselves to good academic, being honest with good character. it's kind of unfair. >> reporter: it comes from the principal who said that cheating should result in a disciplinary consequence separate from an academic consequence with the goal of getting all children to learn in the material. some students say that it made sense at first. >> it's good for the students, but it's not an overall good message to send out that you could cheat and get away with

it. >> i'm a senior, so the past three years have always been a few if you were caught cheating you would get a zero. i think allowing them to retake a test is not real life. and it is not, you know, it's not going to prepare you in any way for life after college. >> reporter: on this facebook page, several west parents blamed the change on the school's desire to boost test scores. >> west potomac is not the only high school in fairfax county, allowing students caught cheating to retake a test. lee high school allows it with a maximum grade of a d. and then at other high schools, the pendulum has swung in the other direction. >> reporter: >> here it's pretty drastic. you could be expelled or suspended from the school. after the first suspense, you receive a "0." >> reporter: peggy fox, 9news now. >> now, west potomac principal declined to talk to the media. recently he also told teachers

not to give "f's" instead to give incompletes sot students have time to make -- so the students have time to make up work. that prevented students from learning some real world consequences. save a life in shanon's honor. that was the heartfelt plea at howard university today where a bone marrow drive was held searching for potential donors, especially in the african american community. it was organized by an alum who just lost her little girl to leukemia. >> reporter: at the tender age of 11, shanon was already living her dream of making it on broadway. he landed the part of nala in the lion king production back in september of 2009. but only a few short months later, her mom noticed something just wasn't right. >> i noticed that she started to become very fatigue. it wasn't normal, even though she had a hectic schedule. >> reporter: she was diagnosed with leukemia. >> ultimately they said she

needed a bone marrow transplant or cure. >> reporter: but a donor was never found, and only a few weeks ago, shanon lost her battle. now her mom, a howard university alumni is keeping her daughter's legacy alive with the bone marrow drive. >> she gives me the drive. i just want to keep going and keep that alive. she was such a good girl. this is my goal, just to basically come out here and start a foundation in her memory and just get more people educated. >> reporter: many people already heard her message. from celebrities like 50 cent to students and faculties at howard. >> i could make a difference. i could be that one person that could save a child's life, an adult's life. we don't have a lot of minority donors. >> reporter: in fact, of the 8 million registered donors around the world, only 500,000 of them are african americans and 700,000 are hispanic. so patients in these ethnic

that's the side effect of it. although it is not a straightener, it's a smoother. and this is not a cheap treatment. her hair cost about $400, but that application can go as high as $800. >> and it's suppose to last for months and months? >> yes, for months on end. in fact, when i was at the salon, i asked the stylist what would it cost to do my hair? he said oh, about $600. >> okay. thank you. okay, a popular montgomery county ice rink has seen the light. the arena unvailed one of the state's largest solar energy system today. they should help control the ice arenas electricity cause. >> the installation includes a large screen monitor so you can see how much electricity is being made at any given time. >> that's just cool for them? >> yes, yes. it looked like it was like that. oh, so much anticipation. one of the biggest, where will the ceremony, bound to be watched around the world, take place? we have a report from london. >> reporter: london's westminster is the hot favorite to host the royal wedding next year, after prince william's fiance, kate middleton, was reportedly seen walking out of the church on wednesday night. >> almost certainly that is where it goes to be and we're just waiting for the official be announcement. >> reporter: in one way, it's a perfect fit. prince william's grandmother, the queen, was married there in 1947, so was her mother, william's great grandmother. but the london landmark holds painful memories for the prince. he was only 15 when he followed the coffin of his mother, princess diana, into westminster abby before her funeral in 1997. the historic church is right in

it will not be a former state occasion, but there's no question that it will be grand. thank you for joining us for 9news now at five. 9news now at 6:00 starts right now. a controversial show of support tonight. prince george's county police officers turned out in force for a colleague accused of corruption. the police turned up at a hearing for the accused sergeant. he is among the three officers caught up in the widening corruption scandal. scott broom was there to speak to his brother who had some choice words for the police chief. >> reporter: sergeant richard, might be accused of being a corrupt cop, but he has not lost the support of a lot of fellow officers here in prince george's county. at least a dozen prince george's county police officers turned up in federal court today. they were solemn and silent and none would talk to reporters. >> i just want to thank them. that's it. >> reporter: but his brother was critical
