roberto hylton's statements about the three officers caught up in the prince george's county scandal. >> i'm just upset that they are throwing all three police officers under the bus. >> you saw the press conference, convicting them right in front of the cameras. >> reporter: last week, the scandal has made him sick to his stomach. he is one of the three smuggling the cigarettes. a scheme that included paying bribes to the unname county officials. he is a former homicide detective, who also worked in internal affairs investigations. in previous hearings, prosecutors said that he used his gun and badge to run armed protection for shipments ofcontraband. despite that show of report, his detention hearing was postponed and he will stay in federal custody at least until another hearing could with held on december 10. in green belt, scott broom,

9news now. a detention hearing for a third officer accused in the case, corporal kim, was also postponed today to give lawyers more time to plead their case. investigators with maryland's officer trying to determine how much untaxed alcohol a club sold. today, officers rated baltimore avenue's cross roads nightclub. members were also on hand and they prompt to revoke the club easterly kor license. 10% of metro's escalators had a problem with its brakes. that's the latest find. a system-wide look at the escalators came after the rally for sanity. surae chinn was at the safety committee meeting today, giving us a look on the latest at metro, surae? >> reporter: well metro board members, not pleased tonight

after hearing of the 588 escalators, 50 of them had major problems. let me break down the numbers for you. 40 escalators had to have their brakes replaced. 10 had leaky brakes, 16 escalators are out of service tonight, waiting for brake pads. council member and board member, jim graham says that means there could have been 50 other incidents similar to what happened during the sanity rally on october 30. and 18 seconds of terror where the escalators accelerated with so many crammed. 16 people were taken to the hospital. you might remember. and they originally said that two out of the three brakes failed, but they all actually had issues in reality. there was a pair of screws loose on the third brake thought to be okay. and in another brake, the pads were worn down to the metal. the gm took some heat today. >> i'm a cust be her who is

farragut station. continuing tonight in the chandra levy murder trial. the jury deciding the fate of guandique. we cannot show you pictures of them, but a half dozen jurors were in line to get through security in the morning. they were laughing, joking, and seemingly getting along. no sign that it is broken down into 12 angry men and women just yet. tuesday, another defendant in the murder case is set to plead guilty. prosecutors expect lancaster to admit to his part of the murder of the middle school principal. police found him dead inside his silver springs home last april. lancaster is facing a 35-year prison sentence. another suspect, saunders, pleaded guilty last week. at this hour, we're waiting to hear from the house ethics committee. convicting the u.s. democrat house rule for misusing his office for fund raising and

failing to pay taxes involved with the vacation home. now, he told the committee that he was careless, but not corrupt. >> what you decide is, you know, in the sanctions that you put it at that before. >> the lawyer has recommended that he be censured. that's more serious than a reprimand. attention fellow taxpayers, tonight as a whole, we own far less of general motors. that's a good thing. one year after emerging from bankruptcy, a leaner gm held a public stock offering and it went really well. investors snapped up more than $23 billion in gm stock. we had owned many of those shares. >> it's a great day not only for detroit, not only for wall

street, but for main street. they definitely transcend everything. >> you'll remember the federal government rescued gm with a $5 billion bailout. today, stock offering is a big step for them eventually paying off the taxpayers in full. we've got an update now on the discovery communications standoff and another sign that the company is moving past the deadly hostage standoff for more than two months ago in silver springs. the garden there is set to reopen. in september, a gunman stormed the building and held three employees hostage, before being killed by police. well, since that incident, the lobby and the garden remained closed. they are now set to reopen after some security renovations are complete. well, authorities have charged a leesburg man in connection with the stabbing that they say was drug related. in custody, the 19-year-old, who is charged with robbery and malicious wounding. investigators say he attacked another young man three weeks

ago in leesburg's spring lake community. that victim is recovering. now an update on the case. you'll recall that he is the siberian husky that they shot down there. that case ended up with so much outrage that the county executive called for a criminal investigation. the 32-year-old, keith shepherd, charged with animal cruelty and firing his gun near homes which are both misdemeanors. he goes to trial tomorrow and his attorney plans to argue that the shooting was justified. well, dangerous toys, we're talking about the ones that may not meet federal safety standards. we're going to show you some of them just ahead. and topper? well still breezy outside. not windy, breezy. we'll show you the high and low temperatures today. a little below average. you can access this on our website on wusa9.com. i don't know why those numbers are wrong, but they are. it is actually 59 the high and 42 was the low. average is 56 and 43.

some harsh remarks by the daughter of the former vice president candidate, sarah palin. she used home phobic slurs to attack facebook peers. they said that sarah palin's new reality show is failing so hard now. and palin responded, you're so gay, i have no idea who you are. but what i have seen pictures of, you're disgusting. the teen went on to use anti- gay slurs and other degrading

comments. willow's older sister, bristol, has apologized on behalf of her sister, but there's no word on willow or her mother just yet. is marriage obsolete? that's the question and according to a new survey, the answer is yes. in a new poll by the few research centers, four out of ten people say that marriage is no longer relevant. and the data shows that younger people are the biggest haters of it. the study also found that african americans, they are much less likely to be married than whites and co-habitation has nearly doubled since 1990. you can read more on these stories. if you're a high school senior looking for $20,000 to pay for college, then you may not need to study for the s.a.t.s. the fast food restaurant, kfc, is offering a scholarship to one student who best sums up why they deserve the money. but here's the catch. you only get 140 characters to make your case. and after the break, we'll show you some toys that made the recall list.

teensters conducted 60 toys. only one of them included a label. now, a plastic that some believe could be toxic to children and cause a host of health issues. >> they never gave us a timetable. they gave us a press release saying this will be safer and they didn't do anything. >> and now, they say that toys "r" us did do a good job of keeping that off the shelves. we talked to them this afternoon. they said they only pledged to get them out of the infant products. they have removed items like vinyl bids and certain teethers from the story. they maintained that all their toys, they meet federal safety standards. and the stories that you see here, they did not meet those federal safety standards. that's why they were recalled this year. and the good news is, the number of the recalls are down significantly from 2008. the toy-related deaths are down too. but the injuries are slightly up. and so today, the chairman
