fort belvoir 36. and columbia is holding on to 34 degrees. reagan national is 40 degrees. and across the region we've got sunshine, chilly up north, 40s boston and new york, but 60s in atlanta, st. louis and chicago sunny and 53. angie, time for traffic. >> it is friday, the weekend is upon us, we're giving traffic the green light. not too much going on other than lingering construction that will be with us until the 5:00 hour. the early morning accident over to the bw parkway up here it's going southbound between 197 and 198 we have the roadway closed right now. so as a result of that you'll want to use 95 early this morning as your alternate. some construction in virginia on the outer loop at 193, georgetown pike. please be careful there. and we have more to look out for on the beltway between gallows road and 236 as well. the cameras live on interstate

270, still very nice and quiet past 121. coming up in your next traffic report, a look at 95 and 66 in virginia at 4:40. back to you. thank you, angie. here's a look at things which happened while you slept. >> multicar crash on the baltimore washington parkway has left one person dead. u.s. park police say a man was working on his vehicle in the right lane of the southbound side of the parkway just north of route 197 when he was hit by another vehicle. the driver of the vehicle did stay on the scene though. however, an on coming tour bus narrowly missed that collision, and swerved. the bus is stuck. an accident reconstruction team is on the scene. early rush hour traffic is expected to be dramatically affected. six people were rescued from a burning apartment building i on kennedy street in northwest around 10:00 last night. that started in a first floor and spread to the second floor. smoke detectors alerted residents giving most enough

time to escape. three people who were rescued are listed in serious condition after suffering smoke inhalation. one firefighter twisted an ankle while rescuing a resident. the cause is unknown. good morning if you're just waking up. we are learning more about the problems surrounding the north metro station. those of you who ride the subway may not find the information particularly reassuring. >> reporter: you likely remember this story from last night at 11:00, a chuck of concrete came crushing down on the north platform, narrowly missing riders like craig powell. >> there is a door opened in front, it dropped directly behind me. we had some angels watching over us. angels perhaps watching, but he could hear the vdot workers jacking above on connecticut avenue and the sound getting closer until the concrete fell through the ceiling. five hours later, metro shut down the busy station so

structural engineers could check the damage. metro blames the construction workers. but a closer look shows that station's history is a troubled one. in fact, a document from metro's own website released back in april shows an $11 million budget request, some for track maintenance, the rest to fix two steele beams at faragot north, that keep the ceiling from collapsing. was that work done? metro says they will get back to us on that. meantime we know that a chunk of metal fell from a the ceiling in july of 2004. once again, fortunately nobody hurt. and in november of last year, inspectors found a 15-foot crack in that very same ceiling. derek mcginty, 9news now. >> we also learned of the 588 escalators in the metro system, 10% have recently had brake problems. in fact 50 had major problems. 40 needed brakes completely replaced.

10 had leaky brakes, and 16 are out of service completely because they're waiting for new brake pads. d.c. councilman jim graham says there could have been 50 more incidents like the one at the plaza october 30th. that's when the brakes failed on an escalator, sending 16 people to the hospital. the agency will start doing monthly maintenance instead of quarterly. two prince george's county police officers acouped in the corruption scandal there might have to spend thanksgiving in federal custody. the hearings for the two have been postponed. the two are accused in an alleged scheme to smuggle untaxed cigarettes and alcohol for langly park convenience store. none of the officers would talk. but the brothers spoke to reporters and criticized the police chief. >> upset with the police chief, throwing all three under the bus. >> why do you think he threw them under the bus? he convicted them right in

front of your cameras. >> last week the chief roberto hilton said the scandal made him sick to his stomach. prosecutors accuse the officers of paying bribes to unnamed county officials. the hearing is december 7th. day three of deliberations in the chandra levy murder case will start in a few hours. the jury has considered the case for 11 hours and no verdict so far. defeating war wandika is facing murder charges in the 2001 disappearance and death. president obama will attend the nato summit in portugal today. >> top of the agenda finding a successful exit strategy in the war in afghanistan. the 28 nato leaders and allies are expected to formally endorse a timetable to start handing over security duties to the afghan forces by next year. the timetable would also call for the afghan government to assume full responsibility for the country by the end of 2014. a house ethics committee

voted to censure new york congressman charles rangel. it is the strongest punishment short of expulsion. rangel was found guilty, including failing to report income. in a hearing thursday he apologized but also said he is not a crooked politician and didn't receive any personal gain for his mistakes. the full house is expected to consider the censure proposal after thanksgiving. the investigation continues today into the gruesome deaths of an ohio mother, her young son and a family friend. their bodies were discovered thursday, stuffed in garbage bags in a hollowed out tree more than a week after they disappeared. the mother's 13-year-old daughter was found alive bound and gagged in the basement of 30-year-old matthew hoffman's home. hoffman is charged her kidnapping, he could face more charges. distracted driving. a new study suggests it's only getting worse in our region,

fredericksburg. back to you. it's time for the first your money report of the morning. >> jessica karr doyle is here. we had action on wall street yesterday. >> it wound up being a great day on wall street. we had a bumpy ride to get there. investors would like more. we saw a rise in manufacturing activity in hopes that ireland will resolve its debt crisis along with gm's ipo. the dow stands this morning at 11,180 after finishing the day up 173 points by the close. the nasdaq was up 38 points. the s&p 500 rose by 18 points. general motors had its day on wall street. the new gm stock rose more than a dollar in its first day of trading closing at $34.19 a share. gm filed for bankruptcy in june of last year. taxpayers of course bailed out the company. the government sold hundreds of millions of its shares of gm, reducing government ownership from 60 per september down to

26%. and there have been more arrests in the bernie madoff ponzi scheme. two long time employees were charged with conspiracy, securities fraud and falsifying records. they say they executed trades in the accounts of wealthy clients only on paper. madoff is serving 150 years in federal prison after admitting he operated a $20 billion fraud, the biggest in history. a lot of people have been surprised at how slow the prosecutions are going given the paper trail. its interesting seeing these two now. >> they're trying to seize property to pay back investors, but bernie madoff used those properties for bail as well. >> its interesting, one of the people arrested only worked for madoff her entire career. so it's interesting to see the indoctrination that might have happened in that case. >> this story will keep on unfolding. >> thank you, jessica. effort to extend johnless benefits past the holiday season fails again when it comes to getting approval in the house. u.s. colleges are facing a

low 30s at this hour. so the air is still kind of dry. if you heat it up and you don't have a humidifier, it will dry and dryer and dryer inside the house. the jet stream coming on shore in the pacific northwest. another storm. you can see the rain, snow, follow the clouds as they come across the northern part of the country, bringing snow to the northern plains. one system passing north with lake snows there in new york state, just a couple clouds here and there. high pressure at the surface, near kentucky. on the east side of the highway, northerly winds bringing in the chill. on the back side things are milder. the future cast in motion, by 9:00 this morning, we will see high pressure drifting southwest of virginia. midday we're looking good. plenty of sunshine here. then as we go through the afternoon and evening, you'll notice clear skies with us. a chilly night tonight with light winds. tomorrow winds turn southwesterly ahead of this front which will slip in saturday night. sunday a chillier day around here. tomorrow the better of the

to text and to call and to answer e-mails and also to talk on the phone while driving, particularly in work zones, overwhelmingly we're starting to see these numbers increase. >> four of the region's largest employers including allen hamilton and nova health system has helped with the challenge to reduce distracted driving from employees. moms and dad's spend tens of thousands of dollars on college tuition and fees, imagine their concern when they find out their kid's dorm room haas a bed bugs. that happened to a number of students in at last five buildings at george washington university. gw is not the only campus infested. experts say almost all colleges nationwide have had to deal with bed bugs. but as britney morehouse reports they may not just stay on campus. >> reporter: they're not proud to say it, but not ashamed. the roommates joke about getting bid by bed bugs at gw. >> it was my first class of

college, i noticed bumps showing up. >> mine were mild. i know my dorm partner had huge welts. >> reporter: both got them on a field trip before the start of school. it wasn't likely they brought the critters back to their dorms. but the school sprayed the rooms anyway. >> they wanted to be extra careful and they didn't want an epidemic happening. >> reporter: overtime, infestation has gotten worse nationwide. what is the risk? >> it's not so likely that they would bring bed bugs home unless their room was the focus of an infestation or they were on a hall with a big infestation of bed bugs. bed bugs don't tend to travel that far from where they feed. >> when they travel it's via belongings, not bodies. >> not on your body. bed bugs are somewhat put off by disturbances and they're likely to disappear when you become active. >> reporter: do these critters

hop around while en route? >> they don't like moving. they will hunker down and hold on for dear life until the coast is clear and then crawl you have off. >> reporter: the bottom line? >> you're more likely to bring something home than when you're sitting next to someone on a plane. anger at the tsa's use of the new full body scanners is leading to a potential thanksgiving travel nightmare. >> an online group has selected november 24th, that's the day before thanksgiving, also the busiest travel day of the year to protest the tsa's full body security scanners. they're calling it national opt out day. >> now the creators of this website, optoutday.com are calling on all air travelers to opt out of the full body scans. travelers have the right not to go through the scans. those who refuse, however, are given an enhanced pat down by tsa personnel.

the creators of the website hope if enough people opt out across the country, the extra pat downs will lead to severe, and we do mean severe security line delays. they hope the delays will quote send a message to lawmakers that a person's right to privacy is just as important as a person's right to security. >> now, i've been waiting in line all day long, i want to get home to mom and dad for thanksgiving. we have children. no way. i understand, i don't like the idea of the pat downs, but while they're here right now, maybe it's not the best thing to do. my question is i've gone through the airport in israel, tel aviv, you don't have the pat downs, you go through security. you also don't take off your shoes and you know they have great security interests. you see the armed guards. you're questioned at the airport several times. they profile. we don't like the idea of profiling, but they do profile
