rain in most cases and a little batch of moisture that is following the front that is off shore. with the temperatures falling, we are looking at a winter weather advisory in affect until 9:00 a.m. this morning for slick spots. we are currently at 37 degrees and that's pretty much the high temperature of the day. colder temperatures and stronger winds to follow. the full forecast in a few minutes. here's monica with the time saver traffic. we started off with the yellow light this morning because of the road conditions. bridges, ramps and overpasses is what you want to watch for at first. if you see an icy spot dial 311 to get you to crews and inform them that way. take you around town. if you plan to head on the gw parkway southbound at turkey run, we are getting word of a downed tree there that is southbound on the gw parkway. head out. the beltway is fine. no incidents to report right now. take you to the northbound side of 95. we are moving along but snowy conditions around the prince

wilt am parkway. be careful as you head up to springfield and on to 395. head back over to 66. on the inbound side. you want to use extra time right now. 50 to the beltway, snowy conditions this morning. there was construction in the centreville area. coming up next time around, we will talk about icy conditions all over the area at 5:09. back to you. this is the advice we give you every year. if you plan to mail packages today pack your patience as well. >> fedex believes today will be the busiest day in the history of the company. we have a preview. >> reporter: good morning. pretty historic day for the company. they are saying this will be the busiest day in the company's history. what we are talking about -- what that means, is that fedex is planning to move 60 -- 16

million, excuse me, shipments around the world during the holiday season. this is a big increase. last year they moved 14.2 million shipments and this year they expect 16 million. why the increase? fedex believes it has to do with a lot of on-line retailers offering free holiday shipping. the national retail federation is reporting 85% of on-line shoppers -- excuse me, on-line merchants plan to offer free shipping. that is up 80% from last year. so that's really the bulk of the reason as to why we are seeing this massive increase this year. so, again, today we should be seeing 16 million shipments at fedex and it will be things like books, clothing, electronics from on-line retailers. what we will be doing here in this center in northeast dc is giving you a behind the scenes look throughout the morning as

to what it takes to get all of your holiday shipments to their intended destination today on the busiest shipping day of the year for fedex. so coming up at 5:30, we will be chatting with a packaging expert as to how to make sure, if you are not one of those people that ships from an on- line retailer, fur going to do it the old faxed way and pack things by hand, we will talk to an expert as to how to do just that and make sure the shipments get there safely and we will talk to the best that run the facility and get their behind the scenes story as to how they make it happen, how they get these 15 million packages to their intend destinations throughout the holiday season. we will have a lot more behind the scenes from this fed, facility in a half hour at 5:30. back to you. >> not sure if you have the answer to this right now, but with the latest threats with terrorism and a bomb on a carbo

plane recently, what recricks are there, do you know? >> we are going to have the manager here at the fedex facility coming up at our 6:00 hour. we will put the question to him as soon as he arrives. i don't want to give you any incorrect information this morning butly ask him that question in an hour. back to you. >> thank you. while you slept this morning, u.s. military officials began to to talk to counterparts in south korea. >> the security policy initiative forum focused on plans to deter threats from north korea. though koreas are technically at war since the conflict ended in a cease fire agreement and not in a peace terre hautety and last month's exchange of artillery fire increased tensions in the region. the senate is expected to take a vote on extending the bush- era tax cuts. some democrats are openly opposing the deal president obama reached with republicans. it keeps the tax breaks in place for everyone, including

the wealthiest americans and it includes an estate tax provisions that exempts inheritances under $5 million from being taxed. on the republican national committee chairman steel is expected to announce whether he plans to run for another term and fox news is reporting he will not. maryland's former lieutenant governor became the first african-american to head the rnc but despite gop gains in the mid-term elections, steel is urn fire from fellow party members over difficulty with raising and spending money. treasury secretary timothy geithner plans to return to work today. he was hospitalized for the treatment of a kidney stone. a treasury department statement says he was released ahead of schedule and spoke to staff members over the weekend. the medical news is not as gad for richard holbrooke, the special envoy. he remains in critical condition at george washington university hospital. doctors performed a lengthy surgery this weekend to repair

a tear in his aorta and a second on sunday to improve blood circulation. he collapsed on friday during a meeting with secretary of state hillary clinton. nearly a dozen people were hospitalized after a deadly case of carbon monoxide poisoning. two men staying at a home in pikesville, maryland didn't wake up yesterday. eight other people in the house and three police officers who rushed in to help them were overcome by the gas. investigators believe the gas leaked from a furnace. >> the carbon monoxide levels, close to 400 parts per million. the threshold we are concerned with normally is ten parts per million. >> the eight survivors from the home including two children were treated in the hype bake chamber at the baltimore shock trauma center. to word whether the home had a working carbon monoxide detector detector. an investigation is underway in to what caused a fire yesterday

at a kennel in calvert county, maryland. firefighters were able to rescue all but four of the 133 animals inside of the home. mostly dogs. no people were injured. there are more than 600 animals on the property. they have found temporary shelters for the displaced dogs but are seeking a more permanent solution. how do you suspend a car in midair between two homes? not a brain teaser, a real question we he show you coming up. redskins has in especially painful fashion. the first family takes part in a washington holiday tradition. it is seven after the hour. we'll be right

fear of possible rock slides after two people were injured in hawaii. >> a large boulder crashed in to a home in honolulu injuring a husband and wife who lived there and left a gaping hole. police in california say a drunk driver lost control and left the roadway and wound up wedging his car between two homes about five feet off the ground. both homes sustained significant damage. neither the driver, his passenger or anyone in the homes was seriously hurt but the driver is under 21 and faces charges. the first family took part in a holiday tradition on sunday. president obama the first lady and their daughters attended the taking of -- taping of christmas in washington at the national building museum. the top musicians perform and a gift goes to the children's national medical center. the event will be broadcast this friday night on tnt.

welcome back to 9 news now. i saw some flakes out there. my daughter says it is because she put a spoon in the freezer. have you heard this one? >> no. >> get it out. friday we had the first trace at reagan national. it wasn't considered measurable but today maybe the first measurable snow. not an inch. that's good news. that will have to wait. it is cold and windy. winter weather advisory is in affect until 9:00 this morning because in most cases it's more than a few flurries. some of you aren't seeing anything and that's good news. look at what is going on in the area. i will run through dopplers, we have at 36. it feels like 26. here we go.

winds are already northwest at 17 degrees and they will continue to pick up in speed. bus stop forecast, wrap the kids up, scarfs, gloves. get them away from the rye roy a bit. it could be slick and a few locations are covered in snow. 2 mile an hour wind gists. last week we were had are having strong winds and unseasonably cold numbers. factor in the wind and already a cooler. already some teens and that's moving in. i want to show you titan 9,000. this is the story. it has been warm enough for rain on the eastern shore. here's the light snow moving to the northeast. it's not heavy in intensity but enough to cover the roadways. not snowing inside the beltway

winds on the western facing slopes will pick up heavy accumulation of snow. nothing like minneapolis or the great lakes. the bigger story is the cold and wind. temperatures falling, average high 38. 32 on wednesday. the seven-day outlook much of the same and winds hopefully die down by the end of the week. be careful on the roads. >> we have been telling you about the slick spots around town. crews were out overnight in maryland, virginia and dc treating the roadways. you want to be careful on bridges, ramps and overpasses. they ice over first. take you to the north of town in urbana where there was a downed wire and a poll in urbana at route 80 and penn shop road. be careful there. there is a detour set up around that. the beltway looks good around town. take it easy. we will take you to 270 on the southbound side. picking up volume as you come from route 121 at montross road. both directions of the roadway we heard about black ice in the

sports. at the end of the day they lost the game because among other things, they couldn't kick an extra point on a soggy fedex field yesterday. with four minutes left in the game, the redskins led 10-9 but freeman let this fly to winslow and beats macintosh. 40-yard touchdown. tampa got away with blatant holding on the play but none of the refs skah it so the bucs led 17-10. in the last two minutes, the redskins get this touchdown. to moss, appears to be heading to overtime. all we need is an extra point. however, smith cannot handle the snap. the ball is loose. a fire drill back there and that's how it ends. redskins fall one point short, 5-8 overall and 2-5 at home. >> i have had a few like that.

tomorrow. >> freezing cold. >> like last week but colder. just as windy. last week was brutal. if you are waking up you might be surprised to see a coating of light snow on the ground. in fact not everyone in the scenario but we have a winter weather advisory. show you the live doppler 9000 hd. a little parcel of moisture and with the air temperatures being cold enough it is falling as light snow, around 270 frederick to the beltway. it pass passed through loudoun county. from fredericksburg to baltimore and up to the northeast. this advisory as we take a look at what to expect for the day today as this moisture moves to the northeast. this advisercy is in affect until 9:00. be advised we will have maybe a dusting to some grassy areas we dropped a degree in the last

hour. west below freezing. we will be looking at a day planner where the temperatures will be unseasonably cold. today's high we have hit it 37. more gad news in a few minutes. we are good news. the crews were prepared for this in virginia, maryland and dc treating this roadways overnight but you want to be careful on the bridges, ramps and overpasses as usual. if you are traveling around town the beltway is looking good. word of slippery road conditions on the virginia side of things from 95 north and south to 66. be careful along the corridor to the dulles toll road, as well. here's what it looks like on braddock road. slippery conditions. especially from route 123. the lanes are open but you want to be careful as you head to the beltway. we will take you to the travel times. on the north side of town, outer loop, ten minute ride

from 95 to 270. in the next report we will look at 95 in maryland. a frantic search is underway in the frigid waters of the antarctic ocean. >> fishing boats are helping to look for 17 missing sailors from a ship. five died when the 614-ton ship sank. 20 have been rescued. high waves are tampering rescue efforts and sailors could only make it a few minutes in those waters without survival equipment. authorities are waiting for a natural gas fire in colorado to burn itself out. the fire started 24 hours ago and nearby residents took photos of flames shooting some 50 feet in the air. the blaze is at an underground storage facility. until the fire runs its course, investigators won't know the cause or whether there is a long-term threat for nearby

residents. fedex predicts today will be the busiest day in the history of the company. they estimate workers will move 616 million packages today, and crease over 10% from la year. they expect to ship 60 million packages this week. we will have a live report coming up. to the other huge story that could impact your paycheck? the senate plans to hold a test vote on the tax cut deal that president obama struck with republicans last week. >> the white house tax cut proposal is expected to pass the first key test. >> i can say we have a good cross section of the senate democratic caucus from left to right who are prepared to accept this. the plan faces a tougher battle in the house. democrats insist they won even

cbs news, washington. a ruling is expected at noon today on virginia's lawsuit challenging the federal health care act. virginia attorney general is challenging the federal statute's requirement that citizens buy health insurance or pay a penalty. any plans to respond to the ruling this afternoon. virginia is one of 20 states have that filed lawsuits challenging the law. we expect major announcements from mayor elect this week. sources close to gray tell 9 news he will keep kathy lanier as the dc police chief after he takes office next month. an announcement of her reappointment would happen on wednesday. that's when, according to sources, gray will announce his public safety director and a new fire chief. our sources say kenneth elserby, the current fire chief in florida florida is a leading

candidate for the job here. fedex predicts today will be the busiest shipping day of the year and expects to set a company record. kristin fisher is watching the crews in action at the company's facility in northeast washington. good morning, cpi kristin. >> reporter: good morning, i'm actually standing here inside of the middle of this fedex facility in northeast dc and i'm here with the operations manager here at this facility. he's been here for 17 years, i hear, although you don't look nearly old enough. now, greg, we will be talking about what you all need to do when it comes to making sure your holiday gifts are packaged properly so they get to their intended destination without being broken or missed up in any way. greg, you were telling me it starts with selecting and preparing the right box. >> a good, sturdy container is always a good start. and people always forget about

taping the bottom. start with taping the bottom, across the middle and three strips on the bottom. a good sturdy box and if you have to reuse a box, obscure the old label with a marker so we are not shipping it to the wrong address. >> eliminate all confusion. >> instead of going to grandma it may go to somebody else. make sure you have the right label on there. >> talk about this tonka truck. this is where i run in to trouble. shipping weird shaped items. >> first of all, make sure it will fit in the box and has some room around it so you can put packing material around the item itself. you don't want to have it rattling around. this is available at fedex office location or couldn'ter location, as well. wrap it in the bubble wrap. you can put your hand on that for me i would appreciate it. >> we can do that. >> so you are padding it against any rattling inside and i'm doing a quick job but put

we start with a couple of school changes because of the snow. in maryland garrett county schools are closed and in allegheny county schools in the mountain ridge district are closed, but teachers should report to work. in virginia, shenandoah valley, page county schools are opening two hours late this morning. meteorologist tom sater is here to tell us about the snow we have out there. >> yeah, higher terrain to the west. just like last week. winter storm warnings. that means just about every day they will get four to six inches and that will continue a couple of days out there. therefore the warnings are out

there. for us a winter weather advisory. be advised we have some snow falling and it will create travel problems. no major accumulation expected. maybe a half inch here or there. most spots gist getting a dusting. really seeing the snow come down. do not threat if you see it really come down at times. it will be brief in the duration duration. winter weather advisory for the counties shaded in purple until 9:00 a.m. some of the counties shaded in white is the winter storm warnings. the wind is strong enough, close to advisory criteria out west. live doppler 9000 hd, i want to show you that. it is light snow moving from the southwest to the northeast on 95. if you are going to travel on that you will be traveling

through burst of snow from time to time. the ground temperatures, this is the big story, last friday we had a patch to the north. with it being so cold for so many days in a row, even one treated roads that's where the problem is. a little sticking to the gund and traffic on top of that. many crews have been out. go though we graphics and talk about the days ahead. as we look at the bus stop forecast, bundle up think kids. cold and windy. already gusts up to 26-mile an hour. 17 frederick. the winds get stronger on the ridge tops but relentless for the next couple of days. that means nice, too. we're at 36 degrees. temperatures will struggle to get here. they may try to come back to 35 but it is already at freezing in many locations. that means the ground will retain the cold air. we will see freezing or below. wind chills this the low 20s.

single digits to the west. wind chills in the teens. a little moisture. the storm system left over a half inch of rain. that little area of low pressure to the north of us now is providing the cold and this wind and it will be with us the next several days. the northwest winds stream to the higher terrain, the accumulation rates will be with our friend and viewers in the higher terrain. look at the next couple of days, unusually cold with temperatures in the 30s. this is the snow potential. in to the three-day forecast and a high tomorrow, this is right, only 30. these are not typos. freezing on wednesday and teens at night. a couple of incidents because of the icy conditions we have been telling you about all morning long starting with the

yellow lights. take you to the beltway in the college park accident. the accident is on the ramp to route 1 southbound as you head to college park. that's a single vehicle accident. if you are planning to head south on the beltway, the accident at suitland road blocks the right side of the road. three lanes are blocked there. we are getting more as we head southbound on the beltway. stay to the left to get around that. you are okay on branch avenue and the wilson bridge. look now at the outer loop of the beltway on the north side of town. traffic is moving well from 95 as you pass university boulevard over to 270. keep your speeds down. we will take you live to 270. looks like this from germantown though point where the lanes divide. a look at the travel times on the inbound side of 66, 15 minutes from 7100 to the beltway. 495 and 395 to the toll road, 14 minutes and 267 looks good

as you head to the beltway. the next report is at 6:00. back to you. making news now, a state of emergency is in affect after two feet of snow this weekend. wind chill advisory and winter weather advisories are up. snowplows have been trying to clear the roads but blowing snow is undoing their progress. and a winter storm watch is in affect for several counties in kentucky where the higher elevations could get a foot of snow by tomorrow. snow has fallen in parts of tennessee and alabama also. it is not snow but record amounts of renata led to problems in seattle, washington. it triggered mudslides including one that slammed in to the back of a home. the elderly man inside was not hurt. this time last year we were less than a week away from the first major blizzard of the season. pepco has launched an aggressive campaign to trim

trees around the lick trick lines to avoid outages. >> pepco says the crews are not cutting trees on private property without the owners permission but a council member wants to know why the utility's door hangers warn that it will. >> they say yes, we might do a complete free removal. >> unless we hear from you we will prepare for our tree work. unless we hear from you. >> reporter: if the utility is going on private property and cutting down trees without explicit permission he says it is way out of bounds. >> you could have a beautiful oak tree in your yard. >> that overhangs their wires and they have concluded that is a threat to their wire and therefore if you don't get back to them, based on this document, they will deem that consent to take out your tree. >> reporter: pepco says it has cleared branches and trees along more than 800 miles of its lines this year alone.

end in dc. >> good evening. >> reporter: kathy is one of 300 volunteers who read the newspaper on tape or on live radio broadcast. their listeners, nearly 3,000 blind or impaired people in the area. nearly 900 live in dc. >> you bet i'm a believer. >> reporter: david conkle is one of them. he is the director of economic analysis at the state department. >> blind people can feel disengaged and i suppose i did at a certain level because they are not taking in as much information as other people and when i use dial in news i felt a liberating feeling. >> reporter: the "washington post" is read live on the radio every morning from 9:00 to 11:00. if listeners want more indepth coverage of the paper, they can always dial in to a phone service. >> 24% on both doctor. >> reporter: the service, which has been reading to the blind since 1974 could soon end in dc. washington is the latest place
