corridor and over into the -- west of the divide and that means windchills will go below zero and for us they'll go down to about zero. let's check out this morning's dusting. it doesn't take much with temperatures around freezing. we quick little snow shower. police responded to 150 wrecks statewide since 5:00 a.m. and most of them in the richmond area. this is one of several that emergency crews responded to in spotlesvania. and in this case the car hit the road and went back into the tree. no reports of injuries, thank goodness, for that. and let's go to the computer for a minute and we'll talk about satellite picture, radar combined. look at the snow showers. the lake effect snow machine is cranking because we have the big storm that is sitting to rotate and produce strong winds across most of the mid-atlantic and most of the southeast. and we do see from time to time some of the snow showers getting across the mountains into our area by enlarge the heaviest activity is still west

of the divide. what a weekend it was with heavy snow from minneapolis to chicago, all the way into new york state. here is more. >> it feels like minus 24 degrees for people digging in minneapolis. it comes on the heels of a monster storm that dumped almost 2 feet of snow in parts of minnesota and wisconsin. all of the snow driven by 50 mile-per-hour winds, making driving treacherous, forcing hundreds of vehicles off the road. in northwest indiana police are searching for motorists trapped in cars. six weather-related deaths have been reported. airports across the midwest are trying to get back on track after a weekend of misery. minneapolis closed the airport for the first time in 19 years and at o'hare more than 1,000 flights were cab selled -- canceled. >> i might not get out of here until tuesday. >> in the pacific northwest

mudslides set this house sliding down a hill. three people had to be rescued, including a 94-year-old woman. >> she was hysterical. >> more rain is in the forecast for tonight in seattle and more lake effect snow expected in michigan and indiana and points east. but football fans will be watching tonight's game there the giants and vikings indoors in detroit. the giants headed to michigan after their flight was diverted to kansas city. sunday's game was postponed and moved to detroit after the metro dome roof in minneapolis caved in from the weight of snow. it was the fifth biggest snowfall in the team history. >> that snowfall was unbelievable on metrodome. 17 inches was on the roof when that occurred. and we'll come back and see we have not one, but two chances of snow here. >> thank you. sky 9 was over the area where virginia state police arrested the driver of a

supershuttle van they say is responsible for several hit-and- run crashes on 66 this morning. lindsey mastis joins us live from arlington where witnesses say the speeding van crashed almost anything in the way. lindsey? >> reporter: we're told the driver was going up to 95 miles per hour and hit at least six vehicles. two people, a 33-year-old mother and her 1-year-old daughter were taken to the hospital. >> he was clipping a bunch of people on the way. >> reporter: the mayhem on the highway began at 9:45. a man from alexandria was behind the wheel of a super shuttle van going westbound on i-66, crashing into car after car after car. virginia state police say the man sideswiped a dodge charger, hit a taxi cab and rear-ended a chrysler pacifica, sending it into a ditch and it's two passengers to the hospital. a little ways up the road in arlington a police officer said this blue honda was struck. >> the guy was going nuts and

trying to go up and make a third lane and go up the center of the two lanes here. >> reporter: and then a few minutes later, a mercedes was rear-ended near the dulles connector. police say they arrested the man at dulles airport at the main terminal. the super shuttle said the man wasn't even on duty today. >> it's a surprise to us. >> reporter: he said all of the super shuttle drivers recently passed a drug test, background test and defensive driving course. >> so to hear this is a complete shock to us. >> reporter: they say they don't know what happened. customers say they are more than surprised. >> i thought it was highly unusual that that occurred because you expect supershuttle and any of the shuttles ate sponsored are generally safe. >> it was fab you'll -- no

problems at all. >> reporter: and we're told he is employed by a franchisee and is allowed to take the van home. police from multiple jurisdictions are still trying to determine how many vehicles were involved. reporting live in arlington, i'm lindsey mastis. 9 news now. >> what a morning. thank you. the mother of a maryland terrorism suspect said her son is a victim of fbi entrapment. antonio martinez, a recent convert to islam appeared for a detention hearing after a week of being accused of plotting to bomb military recruiting center outside of baltimore. a judge ordered martinez be held without bail. >> reporter: according to prosecutors, martinez was arrested but his mother said it's a case of fbi entrapment. >> i don't think this is him. he's not a terrorism. i don't care what the report

says. it's entrapment. that's all i have to say. >> you believe it's entrapment? >> yes, it is. >> reporter: earlier martinez said she tried to talk her son out of converting to islam after several brushes with the law. last week his sister was outraged by questions. >> pretty alarming. >> reporter: homeland security analysts say he is the latest example of home grown terrorists, in spired like this one posted on the martinez facebook page and by the preaching of outlaw u.s. cleric. he was accused of plotting to bomb this military recruiting station outside of baltimore and triggering a dummy car bomb supplied by undercover agents. he waived his miranda rights and told him he was a jihadist intent on attacking the u.s.

until caught or killed. he said he was inspired by the sam you arey warrior. his public defender called it entrapment, saying the government inducing him is clearly the design of the government. he was ordered to be held without bail pending his trial on attempted murder and the attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction. in baltimore, scoot broom, 9 news now. >> before renaming himself muhammad hussain, martinez was arrested for armed robbery in montgomery county. the washington examiner reports the death penalty is now off the table in the yardly love murder case. according to the paper, there is a growing consensus that former university of virginia haguely will reach a plea. his next court appearance is scheduled for january 21st. a judge in virginia has struck down a key part of the health care reform law.

the judge ruled that the provision requiring americans to buy insurance is unconstitutional. the ruling could set the stage for a supreme court fight. the suit was filed by virginia republican attorney general ken cuccinelli. we'll have reaction coming up on 9 news now at 6:00. senators got their first chance today to vote on the tax cut deal hammered out by president obama and republican leaders. while many democrats have criticized this deal, more and more say they are going to vote for it because they don't see a better option. joel brown is live on capitol hill with the latest back and forth. joel? >> reporter: anita, this tax cut deal remains controversial but at this point there seems to be some growing momentum behind it. at least in the senate. senators voted to move forward on the controversial tax cut deal that has divided the president's party. >> permanently extending tax cuts for the rich americans would cost our economy $700 billion over the next ten years. that's too great of a cost for

a budget already burdened by deficits and debt. >> reporter: this was only a test vote but the plan is expected to pass the senate later this week. then it moves to the house where democrats opposed to the idea of sending tax cuts to people in upper income brackets have given in on their threat to block the deal but still want it changed. >> i think we'll have a vote on the senate bill. and with possible changes. >> reporter: liberals want to toughen up the tax rate on inheritance. they said wealthy states -- estates should have to pay more. but any deals could unravel the compromise. they want the plan to stay as is. >> it never made sense to take money from job creators and hand it over to politicians who would only waste it. >> reporter: with time running out on the lame duck congress, the white house is upping the pressure to get the deal done. >> it's an excellent agreement. on behalf of millions of americans who won't see their taxes go up. >> reporter: both the house and senate hope to adjourn for the

year by the end of the week but with everyone facing a potentially new year's day tax hike, lawmakers aren't likely to go home until a deal is in place. >> holiday breaks could be on hold all over washington. the white house said president obama will delay his holiday vacation if necessary to ensure that congress finished the job of extending the tax cuts. anita? >> a lot at stake. joel brown, thanks for the update. christmas is just 12 days away and the post office and fedex and ups said today is their typically busiest day before the holiday. fedex is expecting today to be the busiest day in company history. kristin fisher gives us a behind the scenes look at the facility in northeast d.c. >> reporter: 86 packages every single second. that's how many packages fedex delivers between thanksgiving and christmas day. and monday will likely be the

contributing to the nation's diabetes and helping fuel childhood obesity. they need to go back to cooking foods from scratch as muchs possible. >> eating nuggets, hamburgers, hot dogs, where is the old- fashioned home-cooked meal. >> reporter: it highlights the baltimore public school system as one bucking the trend and overhauling the way it serves lunch. buyers for the school cafeteria are looking at providing muscle meat instead of protein and cooking agriculture and cooking classes so kids gain appreciation of where the food comes from. >> think it starts from the ground up and i mean the gardens. >> the documentary found kids are more likely to be overweight if they eat cafeteria lunches than brown bagging from home where parents can have control. hopefully the new act will help

improve offerings at school nationwide. adding fruit and sweetness to the low sugar cereal can replace the cereal in many pantries. a yale university study said kids will eat better if given the choice. the kids added more sugar and fruit but the younger kids ate twice as much refined sugar at breakfast. a new study finds another reason to keep an eye on your cholesterol. so-called good cholesterol, hgl, could lower the risk of alzheimers. a study from columbia university found people with higher levels of hgl had half of the risk of developing a.m. researchers say the good cholesterol may benefit the brain because it takes the bad stuff out of the arteries and cuts down the risk of heart attack and stroke. with christmas just around the corner, the federal

government is launching a nationwide crackdown on drunken driving. transportation secretary ray la hood is developing a strategy when it comes to testing potential drunk drivers. >> we should be encouraged by our successes, we cannot be lured into complacency. this is not the time to rest op our laurels. the no refusele program represents an important weapon in the fight against drunk driving. >> more than 750 people were killed in drunken driving accidents last december. the no-refusal program would allow police to get warrants from on-call judges to take blood samples from drivers suspected of driving under the influence who would also refuse breathalyzer tests. you know it's cold outside when the dog doesn't want to go out. >> no desire. >> a quick in and out. >> we talked about this last week. no matter what track the storm took, and it didn't take a favorable track if you're a snow lover, but it did suck

down arctic air. winds with us tonight and tomorrow and to some extent through wednesday. let's talk about what is going on now. check out temperatures. 28 at national. so everybody is pretty much in the 20s. we're kind of losing sight of the fact that the average high is still in the upper 40s. nowhere near that today. 25 in rockville. 30 in college park. 25 also in laurel. and even 27 toward andrews. out to the west, plenty of 20s. 24 in fairfax. now temperatures that you feel when you go out, the windchills, it feels like it's 15 downtown and feels like 8 in gaithersburg. so remember the pets. and if you walk the pets tonight to bundle up, the hats and scarves and the whole bit. and west of the divide, it feels like 10 below zero. satellite picture, radar combined, this is the storm, departing somewhat. it will sit and spin for a while and that will dry winds to the east for the next couple of days. and a couple of disturbances in the upper level of the atmosphere has pushed through and some of the activity is east of the mountains into

parts of the metro area. now one little area went through earlier today, we showed you the video of the action around richmond, a couple of snow showers. it doesn't take much, but it can be intense for 5, 10, 15, 20 minutes and lay down a dusting and that's all we need to have problems. right now light snow showers pushing through north of town and more up toward cumberland. let's look at live doppler 9000. you can access this on our website at wusa9.com. and if you haven't down loaded the weather app, you might want to do it. it's cool stuff. it has the temperature layer and the radar and will track you where you go. and north of leesberg in terms of snow showers and also out 66. and again, nothing super heavy but it won't do folks any good trying to get home. out toward loveitzville and purcellville not far from the greenway, snow showers going on. it can look intense for 5 minutes or so. down to the south, looking at

more snow showers down to the south and nothing super heavy but snow showers are in the forecast. it looks like can't and even into early tomorrow. back to the computer we go. here is the deal. windy through wednesday. tonight windchills zero to 10. and tuesday blustery and cold. wednesday still cold. and thursday, well we might see a light wintry mix. wind advisory out to the west. there is also windchill advisories out to west as well with windchills as much as 5 degrees below zero. for us, county, windy and cold. maybe a flurry or snow shower, lows 16 to about 24. next seven days, 30 tomorrow, 30 on wednesday. a chance of a snow shower in the morning. and then a better chance of a light mix on thursday. we're still in the 30s. catch our breath on friday and saturday, low 40s and then i want to keep a flake in there on sunday. this storm was on the map over the weekend and now it looks like it might day to the south. we'll keep you posted. lack to sunshine and low 40s on

now to roanoke where investigators are trying to find out why a train jumped the tracks. this happened last night in downtown roanoke. a norfolk southern spokesman said four rail cars carrying automobiles were leaving the rail yard when they went off the tracks. nobody was hurt. don king was briefly detained by airport security in cleveland. a spokesman for hopkins international airport said the tsa stopped king last night for having i'm -- ammunition on his carryon luggage. no word on whether he'll be cited. king has yet to comment. d.c. area high school musicians spent the day inspiring children to succeed. the group called brass of peace visited three d.c. schools today, including francis scott t and cleveland elementary

schools. they are partnering with the national symphony education department to develop public speaking and performing. coming up next, new at 5:30. >> this is bruce johnson, unemployment in the district is officially at about 10%. but in some communities it's up to 50%. and the mayor-elect brought the business leaders together to ask for help in putting people to work. i'll have that coming up.

>> reporter: there is a cyber firm that has been trying to hire d.c. residents. >> it's a six-figure job. >> reporter: the president of the company. >> we don't focus on getting people educated in the high- tech areas, those folks that live in virginia and maryland. >> reporter: this was one of dozen of local leaders for the answer for the call of a summit of the unemployed. >> there is no lack of helping and i think what the mayor- elect got was promised to partner. >> reporter: only 30% of the jobs in d.c. are held by city residents. that's according to the mayor elect. job training have been eliminated or not kept up with demand. >> we don't lack the opportunity for jobs. we lack the ability to train our residents for the jobs that are actually here. >> reporter: college leaders today promised to help. >> what kind of jobs are available, what should be available and what do people need to know in order to get hired to do those jobs? we have not had that kind of very specific discussion.

opposition in a commuter tax. congress has final say overall d.c. laws. disgraced lobbyist jack abramoff is now earning three years probation after being released from home confinement and finished his six month stint working at a pizzeria. he was released back in june. a nursey roll nightmare in france has ended. charlie d'agata has more on the story. >> reporter: they grab shields to take down a teenager from a teenager who took up swords to take down a preschool class. he initially took a teacher and 20 young children hostage. they were 3-6 years old. the suspect released most of them over the course of the

morning. parents say the teacher tried to keep the kids calm. this mother said the teacher told the children to run outside, saying it was a game. but the teen intruder kept hold of five children and the teacher for four hours. terrified parents huddled near the perimeter as negotiations began. the suspect suffered from depression and family members say he stopped taking medication. at one point he reportedly asked officers for a gun to commit suicide. the drama ended after officers slipped inside the school and overpowered the teenager. the teacher he held captive said the teen was gentle with the children, even letting them use the bathroom. charlie d'agata, cbs news. >> the french education minister said the children and families will receive counseling to make sure the incident is nothing more than a bad memory. surgeons in india have performed open heart surgery on a patient wide awake through

the entire procedure. a sheet shielded the man from doctors while they replaced a detective heart valve. an epidural helped. and this gives doctor an early warning sign of any potential problems. >> sometimes when we have people asleep, it takes several hours for them to wake up after a procedure and if they had a stroke during the operation, it's too late. >> the only thing i heard is this is the heart, so i knew my heart is wide open. >> the father was able to speak to his doctors and at one point he asked for a pillow. but doctors here in the united states say there are draw- backed to this approach, especially if something goes wrong and doctors have to put in a breathing tube. temperatures are falling quickly out there tonight. but i thought i saw topper walk out of the studio with no coat? where is your coat? >> i had to go back inside. i didn't have time to talk it

off. and something else is falling, snowflakes. let's start with your out and about. in the next few hours, it will get colder. your actual temperatures, 28 at 6:00, and then 27 and 26 by 10:00. windchills already in the teens. and by late tonight they'll be in the single-digits even in the immediate metro area. your county close-up. we'll start out to west. clouds to start on tuesday. nobody breaks freezing. alexandria holds at 31. a couple of snow flurries or snow showers possible in the morning on tuesday. it could cause some minor problems early on for the rush hour. and then in downtown, 31 cleveland park. in montgomery county, temperatures here will not break the freezing mark and windchills all day in the teens. so even though we're painting 30 in darnestown and 30 in olney, it will feel worse. the next three days doesn't get much better. 30 tomorrow and maybe a snow flurry or snow shower in the morning. and then back in the mid 30s on wednesday. and then back in the mid 30s on
