way to start out your mornings with us. with your first little snowstorm. >> we are not surprised to see those school delays this morning. in fact very cold outside as you get ready for this friday morning. we will see the sunshine so bring out the shades. here's a look at your day planner forecast, sunny skies, 29 degrees. yes below freezing. for the noon hour sun as well will warm up slightly to 36 degrees by 5:00 as you are heading over. 30 degrees by the evening commute hours. here's a look at your conditions right now. look at these-day-old temperatures. we are at 14 degrees in gaithersburg, 19 in winchester. 25 in dc, some of the roads can be slick out there. it feels like in the teens in most areas, including winchester at 19, york even colder at 11 degrees.

your highs for today, around mid-30s for most areas. we are talking and tracking a weekend storm that it can impact saturday and sunday maybe even snow. details coming up later but first richard andre has your traffic. no major problems, icy spots. i-95 northbound driving in virginia a clear shot to the beltway. 395 northbound looks fairly quiet making good time from duke street all the way up to the 14th street bridge. virginia side of the beltway no problems inner or outer loop and the maryland beltway on the outer loop side looks clear from i-95 all the way to the i-27 0 ramps. the parkway from baltimore southward again no problems and good news so far. next traffic coming your way about 4:40. if yesterday's snowfall

didn't get you, today's will. right now much of our region is waking up to temperatures in the teens and low 20s. that is the air temperature, not wind chill. >> right. so you have that to look forward to as you head out to your car. the combination creating a refreeze in many places across the region. kristen fisher has a look outside your door there. glad to see your hat on. >> reporter: i know. different day, different hat right? so far, i have been pretty impressed with the road conditions this morning. we drove out there, we are at the intersection of beau la road and manchester. we drove here from northwest dc. i'm very impressed with how the roads are looking. this is really virtually no ice we experienced on that road. the plows have been out in full force, a very impressive showing of plows this morning.

really no problems to report on the main roads in this area that i saw as we drove out here. looking very good for commuters this morning. but of course when you get on the more side streets, like right here, this is manchester, you can see that instantly the amount of snow on the roadway picks up, pretty substantially. so the second you get off the main roads, that is when you are going to want to watch out, that is when things do indeed still get a little bit slick. but again you know, there have been so many complaints, especially last year, during the snow, there were not enough plows or salt trucks on the roadway. but again you know, yesterday, they had 700 salt trucks and plows on the roads. the snowstorm peeked and they had 1200 and we have seen plenty out and about on the streets. for people heading into work this morning, i think you can expect to see a better than expected commute, although there are certainly some slick spots.

it led to the vote which had been delayed for awhile by a small group of liberal democrats. the tax cuts set to expire at the end of december will now stay in place for two more years. long-term unemployment benefits were also extended for 13 more months. >> this is a bill that is necessary to prevent our economy from getting worse. this is not a bill that is going to turn it around. >> now the tax cut package heads to the white house for the president's signature, and of course, he is expected to sign that. senate majority leader harry reid has scrapped a $1.3 trillion spending measure. he is going to work with senate minority leader mitch mcconnell to keep the government operating into early next year. the transit agency announced it will begin randomly inspecting passenger's bags,

following a string of unsuccessful terror plots targeting metro. officers will check for hazardous materials using a scanner which defects nitrogen, an essential element in most explosives. the outer contents of that particular package, we will put that in this machine. metro says bags generally won't be open for inspection, unless the equipment suggests a need for a closer look. if riders refuse a bag search, they won't be able to bring that item into the station. the program is based on similar policies in boston and new york. vincent gray has named his new police chief. as expected, gray will keep cathy la near. and during the announcement gray said the decision to keep her was an easy one. he also announced a nomination

passed a bill preventing a tax hike for millions of americans, after stocks made more gains yesterday after a drop on unemployment games. now checking wall street for you, the dow standing this morning a hair under 11,500, after adding almost 42 points in trading yesterday the nasdaq closed up by 20 points and the s&p 500 was up by seven and a half. here's what the tax bill passed in the house means to you. it offers a two years extension of bush era tax cuts for pretty much everybody. that means taxes will not go up for next year. the bill extends long-term unemployment benefits and cuts social security taxes for nearly every worker. it looks like we could all use a little financial boost right now. one-third of us are financially worse off this holiday season compared to last. holiday spending continues to decline as we move closer to christmas and the majority of shoppers who will spend on the last holiday shopping weekend

ready. temperatures around teens to low to mid-20s. the roads can be slick in some areas, so other areas looking not too bad this morning. here's a look at our snow totals. in case you are curious how much snow we got and where, reagan national inch and a half. frederick maryland two and a half inches, alexandria, 2.3 inches. we can deal with this. we of course can get definitely a lot more. we are talking with the satellite and radar picture. we saw the storm system go on through. now we are seeing areas of variable cloudiness in morning. otherwise more sunshine in the forecast. you may want the shades out there as you are heading out the door this morning. the sun can be bright at times. currently 16 degrees, 25 in washington at reagan national, baltimore 21 degrees. as we head out west, 19 for winchester, so yes, it is cold

out there. we are talking about a system for this weekend. here's a look at the satellite radar pictures. we see a system coming up from the coast that could impact us for saturday night into sunday. here's the futurecast. you are going to see the system basically going out to the coast. we are watching it for probably saturday night. this system here and this model, showing it is going to just miss us and go basically to the south and east and head out to the coast. you don't see the green there that means we are not going to get the rain according to this model. we have another model showing us it could bring us some coastal sacramento, the track showing no problems. the second model? well we could see a major east coast storm saturday night and interest sunday bringing quite a bit of snow to the area. it has a lot more moisture and we still have the cold air into place. at this point it is about 50- 50. saturday, increasing cloudiness

insurance or penalize those who don't. >> if congress can force to you purchase a product such as healthcare insurance, congress can force you to go out and eat broccoli because that would be better for your health. >> earlier this week a federal judge in virginia ruled against the act, however two judges upheld the overhaul. legal experts expect it to end up in the supreme court pretty soon. >> i don't like broccoli. the food and drug administration has come up with a new recommendation on a block buster drug. >> it will no longer be used to treat breast cancer. randall pinkston has more. >> reporter: erica long's opinion of avas stun is from when her breast cancer occurred. >> reporter: twice you have had the appearance, twice you have

gotten it with chemotherapy. >> and it has been eliminated. >> reporter: the fda believes most patients won't see the same results. four independent studies show it does not increase survival rates for most breast cancer patients. and it comes with the risk of significant side effects. based on those findings, the fda is recommending it no longer be used for treating breast cancer. this is the first step toward revoking the drug's approval for breast cancer. >> when it works, it works really, really well. the problem is, it really only works if a minority of patients. >> reporter: the drug manufacturer says it will request a hearing, challenging the fda's recommendation. the action does not affect using the drug for treating brain, colon, lung and kidney cancers. it was approved for breast cancer in 2008, when used with chemotherapy it showed great promise. but results of subsequent studies led to what the fda

called a difficult decision. >> i think we need to figure out why it works in some patients and why it doesn't work in other patients. >> reporter: erica hopes the drug will continue to be available, because it is working for her. randall pinkston, cbs news new york. another school jurisdiction has been delayed this morning. loud don -- loud-on county schools are on delay. researchers studied patients who had an obstruction of blood vessels connected to the brain which accounts of '87% of all strokes. the study found when medicare stroke patients end up back in the hospital, almost 15% die within a month of being remitted. the agency for healthcare research and quality has released a report that says more than a quarter million women who gave birth in 2008 were

diagnosed with gestational diabetes. that is 6% of the women who gave birth that year. that number includes women who develop diabetes during pregnancy as well as those who had the condition before. the obama administration is calling for online information to be kept out of the hands of marketers. consumer groups have been pushing for this legislation. a half dozen students get sick at school and end up in the hospital. wait until you hear what they ate. a young man in resston, virginia is helping to spread a message that he says helped him get through a tough time of his life. according to a recent survey, what is the one thing most men say is the determining factor into how much money they will spend christmas shopping this year? >> how much money they have? or their relationship status? or how their favorite sports
