the drive home yesterday was an hours-long affair for many commuters. >> we are hoping all of the plow crews are done and hopefully that is paying off this morning. 9news now reporter kristen fisher is monitoring the conditions. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, you know, i was actually stuck in that traffic yesterday morning, let me tell you, for anybody that was stuck in it, it was not fun but i'm very optimistic this morning's commute is going to be a whole lot better than yesterday. we are certainly likely to see some problems pop up around the area, because there is still some snow on the ground. but for the most part it is going to look a whole lot better than yesterday. i'm standing in alexandria, fairfax county, this is a main road through here. look at this roadway. you guys just missed this whole crew pass through this intersection. the crews have been doing an impressive job overnight.

i have seen at least a dozen snow plows and salt trucks move through this area this morning and it is only 5:00 a.m., so they have done a great job of keeping the main roadways clear. last night we caught up with quite a few people preparing their cars to get ready for this morning's commute. you know, clearing off their windshield, clearing out their driveway from all the snow. you probably are going to want to get to your car a little early, get it running. then of course, it is all about the driving. take a listen to what this one reporter had to say about some of the problems that popped up yesterday. a couple of things we heard many times, people who failed to scrape all the snow off their cars, and people who didn't have their red lights on, especially in the middle of the day, when the snow was coming down much heavier. i think a lot of drivers are concerned, how do you forget

this? we just came out of snowstorms not that long ago and here we are again with fundamental things people were forgetting. >> that was yesterday, this is today. we are going to be out here, throughout the morning. hopefully, people will have gotten their winter driving skills up to par. and hopefully, we won't see exactly what we saw yesterday morning, but again, keep our fingers crossed the morning commute goes as smooth as possible. >> the biggest problem is once you get to the main roads, it is good. but it is getting out of your neighborhood or just your sidewalk. >> reporter: absolutely. we were seeing that on the side roads, of course, and a lot of times in the parking lots, we are seeing the snow start to stackups. but the main roads and even secondary roads are looking pretty good this morning. thank you. well, we have a commuter alert for those of you who take the train. from washington into northeast, a power line came down on the

tracks between baltimore and washington delaware last night. passengers on several trains got stuck, although amtrak said the trains had the power for heat and lighting at least. the line is now open, but amtrak cautions there probably will be issues this morning. in other news a possible problem with one of vincent gray's appointees. as expected gray announced yesterday cathy la near will stay on as police chief. gray also named ken ellerbee as his fire chief. however, ellerbee has taken a homestead tax credit for his house in washington while he has been living in florida. that tax break is only supposed to apply for the property where you live. ellerbee thought his accountant had changed his status. the city council must approve the choices. time for the latest. your money report of the morning. jessica doyle is back from

vacation and looking at the big tax cut package passed late last night. >> you got it. talk about burning the midnight oil, right guys? it was late. we are getting all the alerts on our phones. a massive bipartisan tax package has passed in the wee hours in the house. now the measure is on its way to the president for his expected signature. the house gave final approval to the measure just before midnight. here's what the bill does for you. it extends the bush era tax cuts and enacts a one year cut in social security taxes that would benefit nearly every worker who earns a wage. wall street is likely to react to the passage of that measure. yesterday we saw a reaction on a drop of unemployment claims. the dow stands this morning

making news now at 5:10, hollywood is mourning the death of director blake edwards. >> the academy award winner worked on a wide range of films, including breakfast at tiffany's and, victor victoria, which starred his wife, julie andrews. japanese police have arrested a 27-year-old man after a stabbing spree on board two buses. today seven people, including students, suffered knife wounds, while others were injured in the scramble to escape. none of the injuries is considered life threatening. students got sick after eating brownies at school. six teenagers were taken to the hospital. spokesman mark brady says this does not appear to be food poisoning and the school spokesman says the brownies did not come from the cafeteria. we have at the bottom of

here is going to miss us by tomorrow. but this is just one model. we have another one we do see a possibility of snow again late saturday and into sunday. the first track we saw no problems, the second model is basically dc having snow by late saturday and sunday morning. this has quite a bit of moisture. we have cold air in place. if it comes to our area by the weekend, we are looking at some major systems here. we are watching this very carefully. today look for sunny skies, 36 degrees, by saturday, increasing clouds throughout the day, by late saturday, and into sunday morning is when if we see the system come through we could see snow into sunday. highs topping out right around mid-30s. mostly sunny skies in your 7- day outlook. tuesday another system comes on
