releasing them could insight additional violence. derek mcginty live in the newsroom right now. what else did the white house and the president have to say, derek. >> reporter: lesli, president obama made it very clear, osama bin laden is dead. there is no doubt about that. but he says releasing "very graphic photos is not who we are." the final decision came from the president three days after a team of navy s.e.a.l.s killed osama bin laden. >> the president has decided not to release any of the photographs of the deceased osama bin laden. >> reporter: in the interview with 60 minutes president obama cited two reasons for his decision. gruesomeness of the photos and implications of releasing them. the white house press secretary quoted the president from that interview. >> we don't need to spike the football and i think that given the graphic nature of these photos it would create some national security risk. >> reporter: the latest cnn poll shows more than half of

americans surveyed believe the u.s. should release the pictures. and keeping them secret could fuel skeptics who argue bin laden is still alive but some u.s. lawmakers say the president made the right call. >> i don't see any point in the picture that must certainly be there. >> i share the president's view. in my opinion there is no answer by releasing a picture of someone who has been killed. >> reporter: meanwhile new details are coming out about the raid on bin laden's compound. congressional sources say the s.e.a.l.s found 500 euros. 745 u.s. dollars sewn into bin laden's clothes along with two phone numbers. intelligence analysts say those are signs the al-qaida leader was ready to run at a moment's notice. now so far president obama himself has not spoken publicly about his decision. tomorrow he will head off to new york city for a ceremony at

no politicking, no drama. it is part of the mission." pakistani officials say an international intelligence failure is why osama bin laden lived undetected for so long inside the country. they claim that if the u.s. shared information on terrorists whereabouts he may have been captured sooner. but when asked how bin laden could hide in plain sight, an american intelligence official says pakistan was either involved or incompetent. our coverage of the killing of osama bin laden continues on our website. we have the latest revelations about the mission to capture him, photos of his compound and more reaction around the world. 11 elementary school children in this area ended up in the hospital this morning after two school buses literally slammed into each other. it happened along spring town road in clarksburg, maryland. the buses were going in opposite directions. they were on a two lane road. one bus was empty. but it lost control on a curve and then sideswiped the other bus carrying 24 students.

the driver of the empty bus reported that she may have had a problem with her brakes. >> this person was like crashing into the bus and some glass was breaking on the bus. >> we are very grateful at this point. it appears the injuries to the students involved are not serious. >> the students were on their way to little bennett elementary school. now take a look at this pile of rubble in rockville. it used to be a house. the place just exploded in a ball of fire overnight. it was leveled. and why? investigators say it appears the man who lived there did a botched job of hooking a gas line to a clothes drier. he was seriously hurt in the explosion but he is expected to survive. his wife though suffered critical injuries. neighbors tell us the couple just moved into that home last weekend. friends and family of a north carolina teenager will say a final goodbye to her this week. phylicia barnes went missing in

december while visiting family in baltimore and her body was just found two weeks ago in a maryland river. we still do not know how she died or the circumstances surrounding her death. a memorial service for barnes is also set for may 14th in baltimore. a local woman who filed a whistle blower lawsuit against fedex says the company profited from the tragedies on 9/11. and while fedex denies the claim they still settled with the government for $8 million. britany morehouse talks with the whistle blower about why she felt the need to speak up. >> in my job -- >> reporter: this is a longover due press conference if you ask mary. >> when you think back at 9/11, i mean, i know what i was doing that day. >> reporter: september 11 when her former employer fedex began explaining late packages with one simple phrase. security delay. >> they used it as it was meant to be when 9/11 first happened. as time went on they started

abusing it so it became normal practice for them. >> reporter: normal practice to use a scanning number like this for dozens of packages in one truck all reading security delay. she realized this was going on while working as a senior service agent. >> i could pull it up and see the scans they did on the package. no one was scanning their whole truck. scan before you even leave the building. >> reporter: at the time she was working out of this branch. she had been working for fedex for over two decades and says she loved her job from the day she started driving in oldtown alexandria. >> absolutely i loved my job. until 9/11. and then it changed. >> reporter: so she filed a whistle blower lawsuit in 2006 saying fedex was cheating the government out of money. last march the department of justice took on the case. while fedex says the government found no unwarranted security delay claims the company still settled with the department of

a well loved and blind dc school teacher is getting ready to go back to work after being wrongfully terminated. she just won her three-year fight against the dc public school system. an arbitrator ruled hamilton was fired on improper grounds for allegedly lacking certification just days before she was mailed a permanent certificate. today she says she is happy with the decision and ready to move on. >> i look forward to going back to work so that i can work with the children and pick up from where i left off. >> the dc public school system was ordered to reinstate hamilton's job and pay her full back pay. a tentative agreement reached between management and nurses at washington's largest hospital. nurses at washington hospital center held a one day strike in march but they were locked out for an additional four days. the hospital's 1700 nurses have been working without a contract for nearly a year. details of that agreement are not being released but nurses are scheduled to vote this friday and saturday on weather

to ratify their contract. james madison university is moving to add tornado warnings to its emergency alert system. last week the university used its website to inform students about a tornado watch and warning but some students say that's just not enough. many of them were scared because they say they didn't know what to do. don't be alarmed if you hear fighter jets scrambling overhead tonight. north american aerospace test command is planning to test the region's air defenses and the exercise will start between 11:30 a.m. tonight and 5 a.m. in the morning. norad conducts these kind of drills each month to hone its identification operations and of course to test the region's visual warning system. we had a special guest today here at 9news. scott pelley stopped by just one day after he was name the new anchor of cbs evening news. outlining his goals for the future of his newscast. >> we are going to cover hard news. we are going to be aggressive about that. we will be leaning forward. we will take the broadcast on

county. again, a couple showers pushing through calvert county and st. mary's county just north of leonard town. shower working its way down the river and now in parts of the district headed to national airport and it is not severe but it does have brief heavy rains with it. in fact, where is it going to go in the next hour? weakening a little bit. across 5. eventually into the bay. some brief heavy rains at national airport. big picture. notice we had a lot of clouds roll in. sort of had a cold air mass and we had these little showers develop. won the sun goes down the showers will stop and we will be left with partly cloudy skies tonight. look at the temps. everyone in the 50s. remember the 81 yesterday? how i said that would be a distant memory. it is. 57 right now. 55 in gaithersburg. 57 in manassas. down to 46 in cumberland. down to 39 out in oakland. okay, a bit chilly now.

almost cold tonight. grab a light jacket tomorrow. and make sure the kids have a light jacket on too. grab your shades as well. and showers will return on friday not in the morning but they will return in the afternoon. not a washout but they will be here in the afternoon. for tonight we are hang onto that evening shower then just partly cloudy, breezy and chilly. lows in the 40s. winds north westerly at 10 to 15. so it stays breezy for a while. look at the lows. some areas will be flirting with the 30s and there are some frost advisories. 46 in arlington. mainly in the mid-40s inside the beltway. but 42 in bowie. 45 in waldorf. but you go out to the west 41 in fairfax. low 40s in reston and sterling and leesburg, middleburg, manassas, flirting with the upper 30s to around 40. now tomorrow morning mostly sunny, breezy and chilly. 40s and 50s. winds even increase. north westerly at about 10 to 20. now by afternoon partly cloudy, breezy, cool.

highs in the upper 60s. and winds still north westerly at 10 to 20. so between the fact we are holding in the 60s tomorrow and that north westerly wind we will call it just a little bit on the cool side. we will break it down for you. 40s in the morning. 60s by lunchtime. mainly in the 60s by evening. some areas might top at 70 but pretty much full sun all day. the next three days. on friday clouds come back. couple of showers possible. not a washout. highs around 70. a few showers on saturday. not a washout. highs in the low 70s. next seven days. for mom it gets milder. that's good. back in the mid-70s but showers are still possible on mother's day. we will keep you posted. in fact, this looks worse than it is. we have a chance for a shower and thunderstorm in monday, tuesday, wednesday. those won't be washout days. temps going up. upper 70s as we get into monday. mid to upper 70s on tuesday. and then by wednesday we will be flirting with 80 degrees once again. >> we like to flirt with 80.

because everyone deserves a lifetime. it is time for 9 sports with brett haber. the best sports in town. welcome back to tampa, everybody. the capitals used to have excuses. they are too young, they don't have any playoff experience. they don't have veteran leadership. look at this team today. none of that is true. despite having a boat load of talent once again on the biggest stage in the sports, the capitals have laid a big fat egg. the thing is bruce boudreau's team had this game won last night. they scored three goals in the second period. had the lead with 15 minutes to go. but then the caps allowed two goals in a span of 24 seconds, lose the game and the guys are

baffled. >> you can see it is like they are flipping a switch, you know. when they are down they know they are going to score or something. i don't know what it is. it leaves you flabbergasted. >> we have a lapse in a game of certain minutes and they capitalize on it. >> reporter: so now the question is, is this series over? and historically speaking it kind of is. of the 163 teams that haven trailed three games to none in an nhl playoff series only three have come back to win. the mission to become number 4 begins for the capitals tonight. they play back-to-back games for the first time in these playoffs. kind of hard to say if that's an advantage or disadvantage. either way the caps are saying that the series isn't over. whether or not they believe that is another matter. >> we can definitely come back. i know we can. i think everybody knows we can. we have got the personnel to do it. we just have to put it all together. >> we have got to beat them one
