. the entire national mall shut down when his vehicle was found parked with guns. now only on 9, he says he's being wrongly targeted as a terrorist. plus wives who assault their husbands. a look at the other side of domestic violence. and strong reactions over the decision not to release the photo of osama bin laden's dead body. this is 9news now. we will get to all of this. but first we have late breaking news from capitol hill. according to the washington post, it seems that a deal to overhaul medicare is now unlikely. >> while republicans believe that raining in big federal retirement programs is the way to go politically speaking, the

bill would never pass. >> even as some senators get suckered by fakes, president obama says he will not be releasing those photos of the dead body of osama bin laden. >> it is a decision getting praise and criticism tonight. in order to give the story some context, we're going to show you images that are pretty awful but not as graphic as the real pictures of bin laden after death that many americans say they want to see. our gary nurenberg has the pros and the cons. gary. >> anita, the president said "we don't want to fight the football" and argued in a 60-minute video that given the graphic nature of the photograph their release could cause national security risk. >> what was your reaction when you saw him? >> it was him. >> but the images are graphic. >> the second bullet struck bin laden just above his eye. it blew the eye out of his sock elt and tore away a -- socket and tore away a piece of his socket leaving the brain exposed. >> it's important for us that very graphic photos of somebody

shot in the head are not floating around as an excitement to additional violence. as a propaganda tool. that's not who we are. >> but when the leader of al qaeda in iraq was killed in an american attack in 2006, the american military released the death picture, put it on an easel to dispel claims he had not been killed. >> the iraqi people deserve the facts to know that the personal threat is eliminated. >> reporter: now some pakistani news outlets are carrying information bin laden was not killed. some believe the pictures should be released. >> i do believe it is in our national security interest to prove beyond any reasonable doubt. >> reporter: a new cnn poll says most americans want the pictures released. 59-39%. sarah palin said show the photo. it's part of the mission.

but her 2008 running mate on releasing the pictures. >> it's not necessary to do so. i think there is ample proof that this was osama bin laden. >> reporter: we've seen disturbing images bee . saddam hussein hanging, the death pictures of his sons, president obama changed bush administration policy and allowed photographs of soldier's caskets as they return from the front. but the country has learned that inflammatory pictures can in flame passions and cause retaliatory strikes. >> there is no in surns by releasing -- assurance by releasing a picture of someone who has been killed. >> reporter: except perhaps authenticity. the net is filled with fake images. click on them and you're likely to get a virus and three senators commented on a bin laden photo before finding out it was a fake. and then any look at american history shows lots of presidents who try to keep lots of things from becoming public and most of the time, derek and anita, they become public sooner or later.

>> thank you, gary. well, this just in. a major traffic backup tonight in fairfax county. take a look at this. it just looks crazy. that's like a parking lot along 495 south right near route 50. police say an accident is to blame and it's backing up traffic for at least two miles. we're told only one lane is getting by. so stay away from there. terrorist or tourist. an arizona man was just visiting the capitol when things went awry. lindsey mastis has the report. >> reporter: it was november 3rd, 2010, in the national mall was shut down while the bomb squad was brought in to search a trailer parked near the smithsonian air and space museum. there was no bomb, but there were guns. >> there were two.22-caliber

rifles. and a 357-magnum smith and wesson revolver. >> reporter: this is james pattock. he owns the trailers and the guns. >> it's my home and the firearms are legal. >> reporter: this is the camper. it's now parked at the hotel he's staying at. he said it was thoroughly searched that day, so much so that the inside is trashed. >> that was my dog food container. >> reporter: according to the documents, he did not have a license to carry any of the firearms or ammunition in the district. he says he spent 45 days in jail without bond and lost custody of his dog lobo. he says he pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor gun charges and got suspended sentences with probation. but he's most upset with the comment made by a neighbor in arizona. >> one of my neighbors decided to tell a reporter that i had threatened president obama. >> reporter: he says that is untrue. what do you want? >> i want to get my dog back.

i want to get my reputation back. >> reporter: he is retired and living off of social security and his savings. i contacted park police and a spokesmen declined to comment because he has filed an appeal. derek. >> lindsey, thank you. new at 11:00, tonight the medical examiner's office says the death of a north carolina teenager whose picture you probably know well was no accident. police found the body of 16-year-old phylicia barnes floating in the river last week. her death now ruled a homicide. so far no one has been arrested in the case. tonight a rockville couple is in the hospital after barely surviving an explosion inside their home. >> i just heard boom. my whole house shifted. >> the next thing you know, we have like good 20, 35 trucks in our neighborhood. >> glass everywhere. i saw my neighbor screaming for his wife. >> reporter: the blast went off

overnight. the twom suffered life-threatening injuries. her husband also in serious condition. the powerful explosion sent debris just all over the neighborhood. and, in fact, it woke up several neighbors. one of them took this photo as flames covered what was left of the home. firefighters now believe it was a leaky gas line that caused this blast. derek, now on to some pictures of a local school bus caught in a crash. the damage you see there clearly bad. but would you believe the injuries only cuts and scrapes. amazing when you consider the crash and twisted metal and broken glass into the first few rows of seats. kids were sitting in them. we spoke with a little girl who was cut on the leg. >> i got some glass on my knee. and it really hurt. like it just fell out of the seat. and i went to the exit and went out. >> her and 23 classmates were headed to little bennett elementary.

police say that's when the bus was sideswiped by another bus. this one was only the driver aboard. the bus full of kids then ran off the road and smacked into some trees. but, again, fortunately only minor injuries. tonight political theater played out on the streets of dc. council member marry cheh joined a group of protestors blocking traffic fully prepared if not eager to get arrested, which she was. >> don't take her away. don't take her away. >> take her away they did. kheh and the others came out to demand greater economy for dc government and to denounce a house bill that has little chance of ever becoming law. it would make permanent a ban that blocks dc from using its own tax dollars to help low income women get abortions. president obama and senate democrats oppose the bill. well, the qwest for the cup is over for the caps tonight. the team lost. in fact, it was a 4-game sweep

against the tampa bay lightning. the game tonight in tampa. and that's where we find supports director brett haber. brett, what a disaster. >> reporter: that's a good word to describe it, derek. and i hope you got a good look at the capitals team that was on the ice because the next time when you see it it's going to look very, very different. i can't tell you if it's going to be the players or a head coach or a combination of both, but you know some people are going to pay the price for what happened in this series. game four tonight here in tampa. caps down 1-0 early. but they got one on the power play. alex ovechkin shoots. rebound rattles around. sterm will whack it in and the game is tied at one after one. but not for long, five minutes into the second, a rebound from novert. he buries that to put tampa up 2-1. they would lead it 3-2 in the third when the caps went a man down again and again it cost them. a rifle. and that was the capper.

5-3 would be the final for tampa as the sweep is complete. >> i don't think anybody -- any of us saw this coming down happening like it did. it was probably the last thing in our mind. but you have to give them credit. they played well and they held their own when they had to. >> it sucks. you play all season for the playoffs and you know you have a great group of guys that are capable of doing great things and it just didn't happen that way. >> i was proud of them the way they worked all year and they never quit right to the end. that's all a coach could ask. >> reporter: so the caps get swept in a playoff series for the first time since the stanley cup finals in '98. you just heard from bruce boudreau. what does that mean for the future of him and some of the players. for now we're live in tampa. caps swept out of the playoffs. >> a lot more to talk about, brett. thank you, sir. today's weather made a nice turn from some rain in the

well, typically when you hear the term domestic violence, you think of women as the victims. but men account for about one-third of domestic violence injuries and deaths. you didn't know that, did you. and just last week there was a report out of the miami dolphin's pro bowl receivers allegedly being stabbed by his wife. like women, men are ashamed to report their victims. tonight a man named ed says they need to speak out. >> today life is a lot less

stormy for ed. >> i spent 16 years walking on egg shells. >> during a previous relationship, ed filed these police reports. and in them, he claims he was hit, bitten and kicked in the groin. >> oh, i was constantly afraid. there were times i slept at work on the floor. >> the woman mentioned in these reports was never arrested or charged with a crime. ed says he reached out for help but was met with disbelief. >> the system is set up as if all women are great. mrs. cleaver, you know, from the 50s. and all men are absolutely not. >> the studies say women are still the victims of domestic violence. but this recent survey says more than 2 million men also say they are victims and only 13 and a half percent are comfortable reporting it to the police. what's more, the survey also says that there are far fewer shelters and call centers set up specifically for the men who need help. >> the system is so sexist.

it's in describable. >> ed wants more resources going to men. more quart systems willing to listen. -- court systems willing to listen. but more importantly he wants all men suffering in silence to come out of the closet and hopefully find the happiness he now has. [ laughing ] >> now, research shows women often compensate for their lack of physical strength by using weapons and the element of surprise in their violent outbreaks. >> what a story. so this guy you're calling ed, he stayed in this relationship for almost 20 years? why? >> well, that's the reason a lot of people give. the kids. he was afraid he would lose them if he went to court and had to have a big battle about being abused. he also tell us now the relationship with his children are very good and he's been remarried. and we ought to tell you children that witness their mothers assaulting their dads are just as likely to assault their intimate partners as

adults as people who saw their dads assaulting their mothers. >> the cycle of violence. >> the cycle of violence continues no matter what gender is involved. >> all right. thanks, derek. caught on tape in texas, three mask men storm a waffle house terrorizing customers inside. they're armed with guns. one customer tries to leave, doesn't get far getting pushed to the ground. the crooks grab the cash from the register and got out. thankfully nobody was seriously hurt. the cbs anchor of flag ship paid a visit to us. he made the trip to washington the day after he was told he will be taking over the anchor chair. he outlined his vision of where the newscast will be heading in the future. >> we're going to cover hard news. we're going to be aggressive about that. we're going to be leaning forward. we're going to take the broadcast on the road when we

out. the outside story, well, it's kind of going to be chilly. almost cold tomorrow morning. so that means kids are going to need a jacket. you're going to need a jacket. you'll need your shades too. a fair amount of sunshine. and get ready for more showers on friday. not a blockbuster system. but by it looks like afternoon some showers will roll in here. it should be a dry morning commute on friday. overnight, partly cloudy, briez ee and chilly. -- breezy and chilly. winds northwesterly at 10-15. tomorrow morning, mostly breezy, sunny and chilly. 40s and 50s. you factor in the winds northwesterly at 10-20. that is going to make you feel a little more uncomfortable. more like early april and early may. by afternoon, partly cloudy, breezy and cool. highs in the upper 60s. face value upper 60s. not bad. northwest winds 10-20. the lake will feel a little bit less warm, shall we say. high temperatures then, 67 in gaithersburg and rockville. 68 in arlington. 68 in springfield. 67 downtown. maybe 68 in college park.

68 down in waldorf. out to the west, mid to upper 60s. maybe 67 in fairfax. reston, sterling. maybe only of six, though, in leesburg. down -- 66, though, in leesburg and into manassas. let's break down tomorrow for you. sunshine to start? the 40s. kind of chilly. 60s by lunch time. and then 67 to about 71 by evening. most of us will hold in the upper 60s. the next three day, clouds come back at us on friday. a couple of showers possible late again. not a blockbuster system. we'll try to make it up to 70. a few more showers on saturday. temperatures inching up there to average. that's 72. all right. next seven days, for mom we got some clouds and some showers. not a washout. and temperatures going up a little more back in the mid 70s. and then this isn't as bad as it looks, but we do have a chance for a shower or thunderstorm in monday and tuesday and wednesday. just afternoon variety on monday. upper 70s. kind of scattered on tuesday. and then just a few. just a few storms on wednesday. but by wednesday, we're back up

it's time for 9 sports with brett haber, the best sports in town. >> and welcome back to tampa, everybody. it's kind of hard to explain how a team that had the second best record in hockey during the regular season could not put together 60 minutes of solid hockey in this series. obviously nobody likes getting swept, but in this case, you could certainly argue that the caps got exactly what they deserved. game four tonight here in tampa. caps trying to push this thing back to washington. poor judgment by their captain

hurt them. first period alex ovechkin unloads his frustration by taking a run at blare jones. that is san obvious charging call. the lightning makes them pay. across to ryan malone. 1-0 tampa on the power play. but six minutes later the caps got their own man advantage and they put it to good use. shot from the point rattles around. sterm pops it in and we're tied at 1-1. but then lightning strikes again. this might have been icing against tampa, but michael played the puck and it came back to haunt him. tampa was up 2-1. and eight minutes later he did it again. dominic moore tries to back hand. . burgenheim will deposit the second chance. the caps are out of the playoff and left searching for answers. >> it's an emotional 24 hours because you have a chance to really even the series and then
