put together a care package to send to iraq. hugh was told about the package so it wasn't totally unexpected. >> she told me she didn't know if she had time to mail it but she wanted me to know. >> reporter: to know how much his little sister loved him and this week he was finally able to track down that sacred parcel that contained his sister's final words. >> i received the package in the same location that i also received the news that she had been killed. >> can you show me what she sent you? >> reporter: hugh told me via skype today that his sister sent him this card. inside she wrote -- >> i love hearing about everything you're encountering. it will be even better once you're back. take care, be safe. love you and miss you. >> what was it like for you to get that package? >> when you read the note inside and you're holding the package, she is not aware of what is in front of her. like what's going to happen in a week. and so that's really hard for

me to kind of get my mind around. >> reporter: and she also sent him this hat. a parting gift of lasting love that this brother will treasure for a lifetime. >> and it just kind of confirmed that she was thinking about me and that she really cared. not that i had any question in that. >> reporter: hugh says he hopes to keep his sister's memory alive through a foundation in her name that will one day award scholarships to people who share her same interests and zest for life. anita. >> what an interview, lesli. i know hugh wanted to focus on her life in this discussion you had but did he talk about the indictment of her alleged killer? >> reporter: he did. hugh said he learned about the official indictment of britney norwood yesterday and he told me "he is hopeful she will either plead guilty or be found guilty and that sentencing will come soon ." i will have more of my interview with hugh murray coming up tonight at 11 p.m. for now back to you anita. >> lesli, thank you for that. meantime more of those

letters filled with white powder turned up at more dc schools today. authorities now say more than three dozen suspicious letters appear to have been mailed from the dallas area. 28 of them were delivered yesterday. prompting emergency crews to respond to schools all across the district. an investigator suspects the man responsible may have sent out hundreds of these frightening but apparently harmless envelopes. not just to schools but to hospitals, governors and federal agency leaders. our bruce leshan is live in the northwest. they received one letter that authorities uncovered today. >> reporter: law enforcement sources tell me, anita, this guy may have mailed out more than 300 of these letters across the country. if it is the same guy this is sort of what they look like. this is a reward poster from the u.s. postal inspection service dating back to 2008. these letters went out to the governors of north carolina and

conneticut. >> do you have any idea what this guy's motive might be? >> reporter: postal inspectors suspect this guy may have been at it for years. >> they want to insight fear and targeting schools is a good way of doing that. >> reporter: perhaps thinking in some strange way they need to step up their guard. he is maybe doing somebody a favor in his confused mind? >> it could be. >> reporter: panicked evacuations thursday leaving some people so scared they had to be treated with oxygen. >> we were running and all the teachers were like this isn't a drill, go, go, go. >> reporter: but the law enforcement response is now much more muted. and if the powder mailer is looking to spread terror in the post-bin laden world he failed to have much impact on the school day at bancroft elementary.

dc parents seem more angry than scared. >> to do something like this to children that's really an individual that needs help. >> reporter: the postal inspection service is offering a $100,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of the man who sent out what they call weapons of mass destruction simulated. the dc envelopes are headed to the fbi lab in quantico to determine if they contain the identical corn star much like powder and were -- corn starch like powder. >> we are very, very confident. >> that you're going to find this fellow? >> that we will find him, yes. >> reporter: the letters are post marked in texas and inside they have a sheet of paper that mentions al-qaida and fbi. authorities recovered six letters in schools today. four other letters were picked up by postal inspectors in post

offices and postal processing facilities before they were sent out to the schools. anita? >> looks like they will get caught up with this guy very soon. thanks for that. president obama is paying a visit to fort campbell, kentucky, today, there to welcome home the soldiers returning from afghanistan to thank the navy seals. as the president's trip began al-qaida issued a new warning to the u.s. derek mcginty is joining us live from the newsroom with more on the terrorist group's message. >> reporter: for the first time both the taliban and al-qaida say we know that osama bin laden is dead and both terror groups are using that knowledge to encourage their ranks to exact revenge. all while the president is trying to personally thank the men who took bin laden out. president obama came to kentucky to welcome home members of the 101st airborne division just back from afghanistan. fort campbell is home to the specialized army aviation unit

that carried the navy seals into bin laden's compound. he met in private with the entire assault force involved in the rage. the president personally thanking the team and awarding them a presidential unit citation. >> it is a chance for me to say on behalf of all americans and people around the world "job well done." >> reporter: for the first time al-qaida acknowledged bin laden is dead. they did it in an online posting in a statement titled "he lived as a good man and died as a martyr warning new attacks on americans saying their blood will be mingled with tears. the white house wasn't surprised of the new threats of violence according to the white house spokesman. meanwhile the white house released a new video taken the night bin laden was killed. the vice president called other officials to share the news and the president thanked his national security team. >> you guys did a great job. >> reporter: months before the raid the c.i.a. was already in a the area.

the agency set up a safehouse where agents were gathering intelligence about the compound where bin laden was found. we are also learning more about the president's decision to launch the daring assault on the compound in his exclusive interview with "60 minutes," president obama saying priority 1 was getting those s.e.a.l.s home. >> a lot of the discussion we had during the course of planning was how do we make sure there is backup, how do we make sure that there is something built into the plan so we have the best chance of getting our guys out. that's point number 1. >> and the al-qaida statement also says bin laden recorded an audio message last week and the group says that will be posted online sometime soon. >> derek, thank you. intelligence seized during sunday's raid on bin laden's compound revealed a plan in the work to target the country's rail system possibly on the anniversary date of the september 11th attacks. we will talk more about this coming up at 6 p.m. don't forget that exclusive

and middlebrook road. investigators say a dump truck slammed into the car driven by the 18 year old. two others suffered nonlife threatening injuries. the cause of the crash is still under investigation. an update now on the teenager who police say led a wild fight and stabbing at the national zoo. delia gonclaves is here to fill us in and we understand the 16 year old is going to be tried as an adult? >> absolutely. charged with two counts of assault with intent to kill. very serious charges. today he was in court appearing before the judge in an orange prison jump suit wearing shackles. police say several fights broke out at the zoo's african- american family day this easter monday. the 16-year-old is accused of stabbing another teen four times in the chest. that young man is recovering and reportedly helped police identify his attackers. family members including the suspect's father were in court today. here is what happened when we tried to get his comments. >> you want me to get arrested? do you want them to arrest me?

get away from me. kiss my black [ bleep ] >> reporter: his son is due in court later this month. we know this, lesli, this isn't the first time we have seen violence on that day at the zoo back in 2000 you mentioned that shooting. so unfortunately a violent situation there. pretty sad situation. >> talk to me about the security concerns with large crowds. the zoo was planning to do something about that. have they done anything yet? >> they are still working on it but they do have a plan. there was more than 25,000 people that day. so they are saying that's going to be their capacity. and they are going to shut the gates at that point. not let any more visitors into the zoo so they can control the crowds. but the union is still fighting for more police officers there. >> all right. more to come. delia gonclaves. thank you. anita? >> lesli, at least 95 dogs and

seven birds were found living in one home in brunswick. frederick county animal control control responded. many were suffering skin issues and other problems of poor health. none had been neutered or spayed. animal control officer says an elderly couple lives in the house and are cooperating with the investigation. neighbors say they have never seen the dogs outside the home. >> i don't know what kind of disease could be in that house based on all of the feces and urine. >> taking on adoption of one of these dogs will require more than normal house breaking, interaction socialization to have them adapt because they are not used to go outside and they are not house broken. it is not an impossible task but not an easy task. >> wow. possible animal abuse and

neglect charges are ilk considered. each charge would carry a $1000 fine and/or 90 days in jail. emergency officials in memphis went door-to-door today urging people to get out of their homes. a massive wall of water is flooding the area. the waters of the rising mississippi soaked some of the areas most famous streets including beal street. houses on mud island, a community of about 5000 residentses are particularly vulnerable. the island connects to downtown memphis by a bridge and a causeway. lesli, topper? >> all right, anita. i am standing here on behalf of all of the mothers in the area. >> yes. >> going to put you in the pressure cooker and put you on the spot. >> i know. >> could you do it? >> it is going to be okay. >> did you do it? >> i cleaned it up a little bit. it is not going to be like postcard perfect but it will be pretty good. >> sounds like an excuse, topper. >> we actually have some showers south and west of us right now, lesli. one of those weekends where we have a day tomorrow. much like a day.

store. the owner says the store had a frenzy. there is a name for this robbery. it is called a swarm. about $600 in merchandise was stolen and police have a lot of surveillance video from the incident. some customers may have also recorded those thieves' license plate numbers. a civil rights icon has even more being added to her legacy this evening. >> and the neighborhood library was renamed to honor the doctor. >> the mayor and other city leaders were on hands for the event. >> the newly named library is decorated with artwork celebrating the late educator's life. kids at one southeast elementary school have a brand- new place to play. check this out. a new playground opened up on the grounds. the playground was build by a host of volunteers and in conjunction with doctor pepper. the beverage company has a new initiative to get kids off the couch and moving. coming up next, new at 5:30 p.m. does your high school have a address code for prom?

new at 5:30 p.m. we know most schools have dress codes but what about wardrobe dos and don'ts for the prom. peggy is here to tell us about. that's one local high school. not only dress kid but the way kids dance? >> yes, both of them. the new rules. they say they have been in place but now they are on the website. loudoun county. before you go to the dance you have to sign a form and say you will not dance inappropriately. this youtube prom video shows several dances that will not be allowed at this year's freedom high school prom. grinding. straddling legs, moshing. immitateing sexual things. >> reporter: the rules also ban

short or tight dresses, cutouts like this. plunging necklines and open backs. and what they call indecent exposure of the chest area. senior class rep put together this powerpoint explaining the rules. >> a lot of the dresses, if you just look at them they look fine, but that added to their dancing some dresses rise up, things pop up and it is just... >> reporter: the school says the rules have always been there, the student leaders decided they needed to be enforced after this year's homecoming dance. >> it is uncomfortable for people that don't dance like that it is uncomfortable to watch. >> reporter: but some parents say the school is going too far and not letting teenagers be teenagers. >> the dancing gets a little ridiculous. but again, that's what the chapperones are for. >> it is a student function but it is a function 8 p.m. to midnight with juniors and seniors. they are 18 years old. they can go fight for their

country but they can't wear a dance. they can fight their their country and you're going to worry about something like that. >> reporter: now, some of the students who are upset by these rules have decided to have an alternative prom. and one of the parents has actually decided that they should be on a boat. so about 100 students apparently are planning to go to this alternative prom. it is upsetting a lot of people. means that money won't go to the prom and they won't raise enough money. >> i'm shocked by some of the dancing we just saw. >> well, that is what happens. i have seen it at parties. >> what will do if this happens? >> they are going to give them one strike and they are out. right. they sign the form and if they give them a bracelet and if they catch them dancing like that they go and snip the bracelet. if they don't have a bracelet on and they are caught dancing like that again they are out

the door. >> one strike and you're out. peggy, thank you for that. lesli? >> okay, eye opening that's for sure. well, there was a turn for the better in the labor market. the economy adding more jobs than expected last month. in fact, it was the biggest increase in nearly a year. it is welcome news to the millions of unemployed still looking for a break. >> reporter: co compani es are on their best hiring spree in five years but the crowds at job fairs like this one in new york show the unemployed are still struggling. >> i'm hoping that my skills and my go get' em attitude and my intelligence will hopefully land me the job that i'm looking for. >> reporter: employe rs added 244,000 jobs in april with gains all across the private sector. but the unemployment rate edged higher to 9%. a sign that more people are entering the job market encouraged by signs of new

hiring. president obama commented on the report from indianapolis where he was visiting a plant that makes hybrid transmissions. >> the fact is that we are still making progress. we can take a hit and we can keep on going forward. that's exactly what we are doing. >> reporter: the unemployment report pushed stocks higher here on wall street. a very different picture from the panic here exactly one year ago. that was the day of the flash crash when the dow dropped hundreds of points in a matter of minutes. the market is up more than 2000 points since that day. but to keep up the momentum traders are looking for stronger job growth. >> this is basically the weakest job creation i have ever seen. i think you have to go back 40 years to see anything as weak as this. so, no, it is not that good. >> reporter: not that good for the 13.7 million people still looking for work. but another step in the right direction. alexis christophorus, cbs news, wall street. >> the number of long-term unemployed is still close to about 6 million people and

traffic? >> i think we will be sitting in traffic. yellow light. couple things to show you. first of all, start with the map. southbound side of 295 right here there is an accident at the parkway and authorities are on the scene. look at all these red cars on the vw parkway right here. it all begins at route 50. continuous for 16 miles all the way up to route 32. it is just that friday get away traffic. take you around town live right now. here is what if looks like planning to head northbound on i-70. now we will go to 95 which seems to be the worst of it in virginia. southbound side you've got it from route 7100 down to triangle. i'm going to say that's a 70- minute ride at 14 miles an hour. we also have a commuter alert for weekend metro riders. expect delays on the red, orange and blue lines starting at 9:30 p.m. tonight and continuing through sunday. crews will be performing track

a structural beam from the world trade center site is going to be going on display at a new museum in washington. the national law enforcement museum slated to open in late
