this was the scene where a symbolic funeral was held for the leader. crowds calling signs for terrorists chanting jihad is the only way. in pakistan where the u.s. uncovered bin laden compounds hundreds of people filled the streets for a peaceful demonstration. it comes on the heels of al- qaida confirming the death of bin laden. they called on pakistanis to rise up and revolt to cleanse their country of the filth of the americans who spread corruption in it. anger over osama bin laden's death continues to spread throughout the region. our derek mcginty has been following the day's developments and you're hearing about other groups now speaking out too? >> reporter: indeed, lesli. first al-qaeda. now it is the taliban and the messages from both terrorist organizations had about the same tone. bin laden's death will be

avenged. >> reporter: the afghan taliban is praising the terror leader saying his death will not undermine the war in afghanistan. in a statement sent today the taliban says bin laden's death "will give new impetus" a statement with a similar message delivered by al-qaida today. this as president obama traveled to fort campbell in kentucky. there members of the famous 101st airborne gave president obama a warm reception and away from the cameras he also personally thanked the members of the teams involved in the raid that killed osama bin laden. and gave them the presidential unit citation. the highest honor given to military units. >> when i give the order they were ready. and in recent days the whole world has learned just how ready they were. >> reporter: m meanwhi le more information coming out now from what officials are calling the treasure trove of intelligence left behind at bin laden's

compound. yesterday an al-qaida plan to target u.s. railways for homeland security issuing a national alert. it did not focus on any specific city or rail system. >> it is a heads up. a warning. i think it is appropriate that this information was sent out to those responsible for that infrastructure. >> now, as for today's statements from al-qaida and taliban, the white house says it was not surprised by these new threats of violence. white house press secretary saying it is a reminder the country has to stay alert. lesli? >> all right, derek, thank you for that. as more details are flushed out about the takedown of bin laden, more questions emerge about the strategy behind it and the risk. president obama told steve croft of "60 minutes" he had only one concern when he made his decision to strike. >> my number 1 concern was if i send them in can i get them out? and a lot of the discussion we had during the course of planning was how do we make sure there is backup? how do we make legislature

from this frequent ride nearby. >> today was the first time i saw any policemen at all on amtrak. >> reporter: two miles from the capitol this is the scene at 16th street and new york avenue northeast. this is a driveway, a road. i'm going to spin you around and behind me here is the amtrak right-of-way. yes, a road ungated, unprotected where i could drive a vehicle directly onto the railroad tracks. the question is, if amtrak and the rail system is so secure why do you have things like this? a lock on a cable here but the cable lay on the ground keeping nobody out. beyond this a track side roadway toward nearby maintenance yards. amtrak's media representative said a faded no trespassing sign is a warning for the public to stay away and compared this to the tens of thousands of places where roads

routinely cross train tracks. >> it made us feel safe to see so many police officers. >> reporter: plenty of riders said the vigilance looks good to them. >> everything is a target. what should i do? hide in a shell? we are americans. we don't do that. >> reporter: amtrak does not rely on airport-style screening, instead since 2008 they have followed a policy of random bag checks and there is an active campaign to get passengers to speak up when they feel like they see something out of place which is why i sent photos of that ungated entry to amtrak officials this afternoon. reporting live at union station, scott broom, 9news now. >> doing exactly what everybody else should do. scott, thank you. postal inspectors were able to grab four of those white powder filled letters today before they went out to dc schools but six others had to be picked up at elementary schools and high schools around the city. law enforcement sources tell bruce leshan the suspect may be the same person who has been mailing out those similar

frightening but apparently harmless letters going back to 2008. sources say he has mailed hundreds of letters to governors, to hospitals, to schools and federal agencies all across the country. >> they want to insight fear and targeting schools is a very good way of doing that. >> someone is disturbed like this and send these letters off to schools and to hospitals and governors. it is a very disturbing thought and i hope they go out and find that person. >> postal inspectors say their ability to trace letters back through the mail stream has improved considerably since the anthrax attacks of 2001 but have yet to catch this guy. the 16 year old that stabbed a teen at the zoo on easter monday was back in court today. the accused is charged as an adult facing two counts of assault to kill -- with intent to kill i should say and police say he stabbed another teen four times in a chest during a brawl at the zoo. his father was in court today and he was not happy when we

bring out their mother's diary. surviving the holocaust and sharing her story with britany morehouse. >> my parents told me before their arrest. >> reporter: a diary written by a 16-year-old girl in paris who survived the holocaust. >> my parents were sent away and they wanted me too but my father told them that i was on vacation and i was sleeping on the top floor. >> reporter: a story that gives chills to her husband and four children knowing the fate of her parents. >> they were killed. my parents were taken away on september 14th and they were dead on september 18th. that's how it went. they were just put in the gas chamber. >> reporter: she now tells her table in a as a matter of fact manner. >> i tried to cross the border

empty. private business created 260,000 jobs. biggest monthly gain in more than five years. on the other hand unemployment rose just a bit from 8.8% to 9% even. at 5 p.m. we showed you flooding in memphis. now take a look at the water logged area of a large section of interstate 40 closed in both directions because of the floodwaters there. topper, look at that. this is the area between littlerock and memphis. they are monitoring what is going on. they are not moving. transportation officials say extensive flooding has closed many of the highways in the state. >> almost as bad as 1993 in terms of the whole midwest. it is close. >> massive. back here though, pretty good. a lot going on tomorrow. march for babies. >> nationals park. get there at 8:30 a.m.

walk starts at 9 a.m. tomorrow morning will be fine. the rest of the weekend just a couple showers here an there. let's start with the big picture. we actually have some showers out there right now. quite frankly this one up to the north is i think a severe storm. i think it has some hail in it. heavy rain. lightening. no doubt about that. we are looking at -- look at this heavy rain. southwestern sections of montgomery county. it will crossover shortly and go across 270. remember, if you hear thunder go indoors. just as simple as that. we will zoom in and some showers down to the south. primarily this is the lone ranger here so to speak. a pretty heavy storm. rainfall rates 1 to 2 inches per hour. moving out to the northeast at 30 miles per hour. did have some hail just to the north. crossing 28. it is going to eventually head here an crossover 270. we will back out a little bit and kind of get your bearings. pretty big storm and it could actually end up producing some hail and strong gusty winds. where will it go in the next hour? it will crossover right through
