"this broadcast realtime captioned by becky lyon." tonight the world is getting a chance to see the life osama bin laden was living in hiding. hello, i'm bruce johnson. thank you for joining us this saturday. pentagon released five home movies that were seized in the daring raid on bin laden's pakistan compound. more now on the video and reaction. ken? >> reporter: well, bruce, as so many people will remember it was here at the white house almost a week ago now that the news broke of bin laden's killing and since then every day we have seen updates following his killing. now the pentagon is releasing videos, home videos of him that have a lot of people talking. all these years since eluding

capture he had been thought to be hiding out in caves in afghanistan. he was killed inside a compound. the videos show bin laden watching television clips of himself. release of the video by the pentagon has been accepted by many as proof that navy s.e.a.l.s did in fact kill the most wanted terrorist. others say it shows how vane bin laden really was. >> conspiracy theory that we have found bin laden. >> i thought he looked pathetic. somewhat limited. i can't wait to read the new yorker full blown article on what happened. it is pretty exciting. >> reporter: again, these five videos released by the pentagon are just a small snippet. live outside the white house,

birthday. bathe maine, 1.1 billion vessel will be based in hawaii. national law enforcement memorial people gathered to remember the fallen. the 20th annual ceremony paid tribute to officers around the country who made the ultimate sacrifice. maryland, virginia and district of columbia were there. new warning system heading into orbit tonight. part of the pay load for the atlas 5 rocket. it took off from the kennedy space center just this morning. the rocket will release the first satellite of the new department of defense system into orbit. at the national air and space museum. space day returned today. the annual family event featured hands on activities about space and the history of aviation. participants can attend space training, check out some moon rocks, build a mini international space station.

there were also presentations on space and astronomy. graduating students at american university here in washington are walking away from a commencement speech about optimism today. the words follow the news friday that the economy unexpectedly added more than 200,000 jobs last month. as britany morehouse reports tonight that leaves one group of graduates quite hopeful. >> reporter: walking across a campus with vibe and blue ropes everywhere crystal taylor talked about her decision to go back to school. >> with the economy being the bad the way it was i kind of had to keep working while going to school. it wasn't an option to go to school full time. >> reporter: with 17 others she is graduating from a masters program with weekend classes. >> this is the 19th group we graduated. we started the weekend program in 1982 and the reason was so

many people couldn't go to evening graduate school because the professors expect them to work until 5, 6, maybe 9:00. >> the economy is what made me go back to school. >> reporter: she is not alone. >> the majority of the people that are here, the reason they are here is to try to insulate themselves and inoculate themselves from times like this. it is fitting people are trying to find a step up. >> reporter: so they think about stepping up as they step down these stairs for the last time a student. >> i actually feel really confident i'm going to get a job and a decent one at that. >> i actually got a new job while i was in this program. >> reporter: they are realistic about it. >> when it comes to a graduate level degree we are still paying for our under graduate. scary. >> my last name is ma of education. >> reporter: di dissolv ing

into an inspiring salute. britany morehouse, 9news now. april's labor market report marks the third straight months in which more than 200,000 jobs were created but the best three- month hiring spree in five years. lots of colleges have graduations over mother's day weekend. so far so good weather wise. we are on the weather terrace checking your forecast. howard, what's up. >> clouds moving in during the afternoon. a couple of showers north and northwest of town. if you're going out grab the umbrella to be on the safe side. here is a look at what we are seeing right now. one of the things we are dealing with is this northwesterly flow in the upper levels of the atmosphere. if it makes it out of the mountains, it has a chance to get us and that's what we are looking at now. when you see some of that action in west virginia getting in toward areas over toward the shenandoah valley. zooming out west.

winchester and points west out towards front royal, a little bit of rain showers. light for the most part. this is going down toward new market. western loudoun. not out of the question. culpeper a few showers in the next 30 to 60 minutes. likely a lot of the activity will start to fall apart once the sun goes down. day planner for next several hours. going out tonight temperatures still in the upper 60s. pretty fine evening. go out and get a bite to hit. will hit 63 there by 9 p.m. as we head toward the midnight hour down to 60. and tomorrow morning there still could be a light shower one or two spots west of town. we start off generally in the lower to mid-50s. we will come back and talk about mother's day. your seven-day forecast and looks like a pretty nice break for us. back to you. >> thank you. rising river.

back on 9news now with a look at a brush fire spreading through north carolina's coastline. officials say the flames are hovering around highway 624 and could scorch 16,000 areas by the end of the day. so far no evacuations have been ordered but officials are tonight reassessing their containment strategy to try to put out those flames. the problems further west lie with the mississippi river. the worst flooding since the great depression is now seen evacations affecting thousand. we take a look. >> reporter: n neighbo rhoods and cars are sub merged in murky flood waters as the mississippi water overflows. director of shelby county tennessee's office of preparedness says rivers flowing into the mighty mississippi are beginning to flood two.

>> the mississippi is rising. tributaries are flooding east and west. looks like they are wrapping itself around shelby county. >> reporter: e evacuat ions happening in illinois, kentucky. arkansas and tennessee residents are stacking sand bags in an effort to keep flood waters at bay. >> we are busy working seven days a week. late hours. just trying to keep everybody from flooding. we really think this is a big service to the community. >> reporter: engineer brad sexton said sand bagging is something that should be done sooner rather than later. >> my recommendation is to do it now. don't wait. if you wait and it happens it is going to be too late. once the water starts to come in it is too late. >> reporter: forecas ts predict the mississippi river will crest wednesday evening at 48 feet in memphis just short of the all time record set in 1937. reporting from atlanta, i'm barbara hall.

>> get that water down. flooding with lake champlain reaching 3 feet above flood stage. about 50 houses have been evacuated and volunteers are now filling sand bags tonight to try to protect dozens of others. the federal government will not be giving the state of virginia after destructive tornadoes. more than two dozens hit killing 10 people destroying 212 homes. today the governor announced that the federal emergency management agency just denied virginia's request for aid. he said they can appeal. >> it hasn't been this high since 1869. the flooding going on in the middle of the country unbelievable. >> want to show you a graphic that says a lot. where the flood warnings are nationally everything in light green. and that's the mississippi river basically from almost

iowa near wisconsin, illinois come together. ohio river. parts of the dakotas. of course you've got around upstate new york and vermont with lake champlain there. a tremendous amount of flooding in other parts of the country and some of this water is going to be here for weeks to come. it will take some time to drain down toward the gulf of mexico. looking outside this evening. 67 at 7 p.m. there will be an isolated shower or two especially west of washington this evening. by midnight down to 60 and northwest winds very comfortable. 5 miles per hour. tomorrow morning mother's day we start with temperatures in the 50s. mid and upper 50s by the 8 p.m. hour. look at the big picture. we had some thunderstorms earlier. lightening was popping just scattered. that has diminished but have showers basically west of washington all of it moving off towards the east-southeast. we are okay here in the immediate metro but off to the west we do have some showers that are falling in over the next few hours we will watch this activity as it moves off again to the east-southeast.

you folks in front royal over towards warrenton and culpeper. west virginia first. by far the heaviest stuff we are looking at. we could get a rumble of thunder this. looks like it will pass to the south of strausburg. winchester. you've got a couple sprinkles up there coming out of romney. route 50. 220. a lot of the action is actually east of that. want to get back to that here. just jumping the gun there. one more stop i want to take you down south. as you go south on 81 to woodstock, mt. jackson, new market, more showers. again, headed towards this area. we will see if it holds together and gets to washington. temperatures very nice this evening. low 60s in cumberland. mid-70s south. lots of 60s. 65 in fairfax. 72 in college park. 69 at andrews. officially 68. mostly cloudy. a west wind at 9. the air very

dry. humidity 39%. what we are watching nationally is the jet stream coming like so. pushing any of these weak systems towards us. we will have another one tomorrow. so tomorrow we also have got the threat. we are seeing isolated showers in the afternoon. best chance will be west and south of washington. for tomorrow, mother's day. 70. isolated showers. beautiful weather next week. monday and tuesday. we are in the low 70s. then as we head towards wednesday. low to mid-70s. the end of next week things break down and we are looking at a better chance for showers and storms as we head toward friday and unfortunately saturday. >> there you go. >> how dare you predict rain on mother's day. what's wrong with you? >> showers here and there. i've got to do it. >> no big deal. >> it is not me making it. >> okay. sports. >> university of maryland. coaching search continues. emotional good-bye of gary williams yesterday but the college wasted no time whatsoever starting to look for a coach. they really don't have much time to waste anyways. we will tell you about the

you covered maryland. you know gary? >> yes. >> they are not wasting time looking for a replacement. >> not at all. apparently gary told them last week before they made the formal announcement thursday and friday. they are in las vegas today. maryland officials like you said wasting no time to find a replacement. the 66-year-old announcing his retirement after 22 years as terrapins head coach. the quicker they can hire a new coach the quicker they can have players jump ship. a good friend of gary williams already in las vegas today meeting with shawn miller. they said they would take their time friday finding a new head

coach but many reports say it is already almost a done deal. in seven seasons as a head coach, miller has an overall record of 136 and 62, led his team to two elite 8 appearances and was pac-10 coach of the year this season. miller has east coast ties, from pittsburgh. played point guard for panthers. so it is like he is almost coming home. nationals in action down in miami for game 2 against the florida marlins. thank goodness the defensive part of their game was working last night because their offense sure wasn't. the nats struck out 17 times last night. that matches a team record. not their best play. but it was their bull pen that saved them. up 3-2 in the 10th then the time run on third. able to get the first two outs and they get the final batter to fly out. solid defense from the nats. nice to see that out there. they snapped a three game skid. so can they make it two in a

row. on the mound for the teams. they called a player to replace the center fielder who is out with a right wrist sprain. orioles hosting the rays at camden yards. top of the 1st tampa gets on the board first. evan longerria with a double to left. 1-0 rays. in the third evan strikes again. that's his first of the season. a three-run homer to left. 4-0 rays. two innings later the rays played more long ball. b.j. three-run shot to right. rays win 8-2. sad news to report. the sporting world lost a golf legend. he died early this morning at his home in spain from complications of a brain tumor. he was just 54 years old. he retired in 2007 after back injuries put a hindering in his game but the five-time major winner was considered an icon in spanish golf. nick pryce is quoted as saying
