violate the rules of the house. >> reporter: once considered a rising star here on capitol hill, weiner had been expected to run for new york city mayor in 2013. now it's unclear whether it will be enough to save his career. >> if he's truly come clean, no more tweets out there, no more lewd phone calls. he could ride this out. >> reporter: some political analysts believe weiner will bounce back. reactions are mix. >> totally dumb, ridiculous. >> reporter: he's a great congressman. but he did a super thing and people do stupid things. >> reporter: weiner said he worked hard for voters over the years and will continue to work just as hard to win back their trust. the congressman said he used his personal computer in blackberry, not his issued devices to carry on with these women on facebook and twitter. >> oriole, is the congressman getting any kind of support on

capitol hill? >> you could hear a pin drop on the democratic side of the aisle. his political allies don't want any part of the personal cry seals. he does have the support of the wife. she offered to stand by his side at the news conference yesterday, and he told her, he wanted to do it alone, betty? >> he did, joel brown in washington, thank you, joel. sources tell cbs news that weiner decided to fess up over the weekend but only did so monday when more damaging photos showed up. the pictures of a shirtless weiner was revealed by brightbart. he has an x-ray photo of weiner that he won't release. >> i've the one to chosen not to do the salacious thing, the thing to get a billion hits on my website. i have no intention to rub salt in his wounds. all i wanted to do was tell the truth all along.

>> brightbart said he's not releasing the photos you heard there to protect weiner's family. >> now to the tornado and the touchdown last night. it spun last night near the billings airport. it was one of several that struck the billings area. no injuries are reported and the extent of the damage was not yet clear. in southwestern iowa, residents worked overnight to protect hamburg from the swollen missouri river. they're trying to reinforce one faltering levee. but the river will crest at record levels leaving the town under eight feet of water. most residents are evacuated. now to eastern arizona where a huge wild fire has forced more than 3,000 people to evacuate. the wall of fire believed caused by a campfire has burned and 360 square miles near the new mexico state line. the fire is being seen and felt far away.

kenneth gibson reports. >> reporter: a thick haze of smoke blanketed the city of denver 700 miles from the wild fires burning in eastern arizona. this wild fire is the third largest in arizona history and growing. and here's why. high winds and low humidity are helping to fuel the fames and it's only expected to get worse. 2400 firefighters from as far away as new york city are on the ground battling the flames. after more than a week, the fire is still 0% contained. >> we continue to put resources on it. we continue to change our tactics to meet the different needs and such. but so far, that fire is pretty much burning freely. >> reporter: despite the size, 365 square miles, the fire has only burned a handful of buildings so far. but officials continue to issue mandato mandatory evacuations. the 200 residents of the small picturesque tourist town of greer are among the latest to

get orders to pack up and leave. >> nothing stays in this fire. they're not going to fight that fire. >> reporter: fire fighters and residents know until the winds die down, there's little anyone can do but to get out of the fire's path. kenneth gibson, cbs news. now to the war in afghanistan, some of the more than 100,000 troops serving there now will begin coming home in july. how many and how quickly will depend on president obama who's waiting for a final recommendation from his top commanders. >> i intend to follow through on the commitment i made to the american people. it's time for us to recognize we've accomplished a big chunk of our mission and it's time for the afghans to take more of the responsibility. >> robert gates is wrapping up a visit to afghanistan today. he has said he wanted to begin the drawdown slowly leaving as many combat troops as possible in the field for now.

as president obama considers whether to pick up the pace from withdraw from afghanistan, the war on the front lines does continue. manny clark is with soldiers of the 101th airborne at paktika province. >> reporter: their mission, to cut the enemy off at the source. along the border with pakistan, the razor's edge of the war. the pilot struggled to land the helicopters on the rugged mountain topples. soldiers rushed out and took out the census position. three armed men, possibly enemy spotters, were identified on the next ridge. the response was swift and fierce. two 500-pound bombs dropped right on the border with pakistan. three dead bodies were recovered, awrong wilong with h
