six women were contacted both before and after he got married. he will cooperate with an investigation but has no plans to resign. the married congressman claimed his twitter account had been hacked and he did not send the photos and someone else did. now he admits he lied for the past week about that. >> ted, the former chief of staff for jim graham is scheduled to be sentenced today. in february, he pled guilty to two felony charges of accepting gratuities and one charge of a false statement. he faces up to 14 months in federal prison. loza accepted the gifts from the taxicab industry with the intention of trying to give councilman graham which would be favorable to taxi drivers. a d.c. council committee heard from sulaimon brown. >> the former candidate testified about his accusations he's made by payoffs with vincent gray. he said he was paid to verbally

attack fenty during last year's primary. brown brought along receipts and copies of moneys orders he said were given to him by gray's top campaign aides. >> here if you would like to see them. these were given to us to our campaign by the gray campaign. when they purchased them, i don't know, don't even care. i just know when i received them. >> brown had some exchanges with about every member of the hearing. as for mayor gray, his office would say it is awaiting the results of three different investigations into brown's allegations. controversy is swirling around yet another d.c. lawmaker. councilman harry thomas jr. is facing a million dollar lawsuit, accusing him of using public funds for personal use. the civil suit filed by d.c.'s attorney general says thomas received hundreds of thousands of dollars in illegal donations through his nonprofit organization. thomas is denying the

accusations. his attorney emphasizes the allegations and they are not true findings. >> on monday, five american troops were killed in iraq. >> that's the most american deaths in one day since 2009. joel brown has more. >> reporter: five american service members were killed in eastern baghdad this morning. security officials say rockets slammed into a joint u.s. iraqi base where americans were working advisers. it is the single largest loss of life for the u.s. military in iraq in the past two years. monday's blast was one of seven across iraq. west of baghdad in ramadi, the home of a police officer was destroyed by a bomb. at least four people were killed. and in tikrit, saddam hussein's hometown, a suicide bomber detonated a car at a checkpoint outside a government compound, killing at least six. it was the second attack there in four days. u.s. combat operations end

inned iraq last august but the 46,000 american troops who remain as advisers and trainers come almost daily attack in their barracks and when they move around the country. all american forces are scheduled to leave iraq by the end of the year. joel brown, cbs news, washington. the u.s. deaths raised the total of american fatalities to 4459. 29 of those happened this year. today, president and mrs. obama will host german chancellor angela merkel during a black-tie dinner at the white house. >> last night, the president and the merkel had an informal dinner at the 1789 restaurant. she's the first european leader to get this kind of treatment. aides say the visit was arranged to highlight the close working relationship between the two leaders. tim pawlenty is scheduled to present what he calls a simplified tax system for the country. >> during a speech today in chicago, the former minnesota governor will unveil his tax

proposal as part of his campaign on economic policy. highlights of that policy include a 50% cut on business taxes and what pawlenty calls the google test which basically says the americans can find a service on the internet from a private company, the government probably should not be providing that service. yesterday, former pennsylvania senator rick santorum jumped into the race for the republican presidential nomination. he made the announcement outside the somerset courthouse. he's counting on support from tea party supporters. former head of the monetary fund said he's not guilty during his first court appearance in two weeks, dominique strauss-kahn stood next to his wife and plead not guilty he tried to rape a maid. a wildfire in arizona has charred more than 350 square miles. about 2500 firefighters are working to contain the blaze.

a major sandbagging effort is underway in hamburg, iowa. residents there are racing against the clock to prevent flooding from the swollen missouri river. a levy protecting the town is leaking. if it falls apart, part of hamburg could end up under eight feet of water. the tornado that struck joplin, missouri is expected to cost insurance companies as much as $7 billion. more than 500 people have been killed in tornadoes including at least 130 in joplin. coming up at 4:41, metro may soon be looking to hire a few dozen employees. the latest high tech advancement from apple is unveiled amid a wave of fans in san francisco. >> stay with us.

oil ministers are expected to decide whether to increase oil production. the u.s. will release its latest outlook on supply and demand. demand has been falling as gas prices remain high. as for wall street, checking the numbers. dow stands at 12,089 dropping another 61 points in trading. the nasdaq was off by 30 and the s&p 500 was off by almost 14 points. metro wants to hire in a big way. it has put in a request to add 345 positions in the coming budget which would raise the head count to well over 11,300. it is second year in a row that metro would increase the staffing that was started last spring as general manager and has brought in new executives, created new high level positions, shaken up communications staff and giving out bonuses as big as $20,000. metro is trying to close a $66 million budget shortfall. >> groupon and expedia want to

on-going construction project impacting lanes in both directions. still ahead, we're taking a look at the car fire in laurel. we'll bring you the very latest at 4:56. mike? >> thanks, ang. a task force is going to study the impact of natural gas drilling and what it would have on western maryland. martin o'malley signed an executive order requiring state environmental officials to conduct this study besides environmental impact, the study will include recommendations on the best way to tax drilling and establish some liability standards. a controversial natural gas drilling practice known as hydrotracking was the topic of an e.p.a. hearing in new york. fracing is used to release natural gas from a rock thousands of feet underground by injecting millions of gallons of water mixed with chemicals and sand at a high pressure. the issue is the waste from fracking is often contaminated water and air. the e.p.a. is planning to use testimony from this hearing as part of a study into the environmental

impact of fracking on local communities. the supreme court has refused to hear a case concerning tuition breaks for illegal immigrants. it was a challenge to a california law that gives all high school graduates reduced tuition no matter if they're in the country legally or not. >> a similar policy was signed into law last month. opponents here are trying to get the issue out to a public vote. german officials say initial tests showed that sprouts from an organic farm in the north are not the cause of the e. coli outbreak. the agriculture ministry says that 23 of 40 samples from the sprout farm suspected of being behind the outbreak have tested negative for the bacteria. further tests are pending. the e. coli outbreak in germany has killed at least 22 people and sickened more than 2300 people across europe. steve jobs came off medical leave to appear at apple's worldwide development conference in san francisco. >> as always, the mac world
