the new york congressman came out yesterday in a press conference. his confession to the world. >> the picture was of me. and i sent it. >> shamed congressman anthony weiner says he mentioned women mainly through facebook. he thought he sent the lewd photo, the gray underwear photo to a college student in seattle. instead, he tweeted it out. he panic and told the lie he had been hacked. he stuck with the story for ten days until last night. >> i'm deeply sorry for the pain this has caused my wife and our family. and my constituents, my friends, supporters and staff. in addition over the past few years, i have engaged in several inappropriate conversations conducted over twitter, facebook, e-mail and occasionally on the phobe with women i have met online. i've exchanged photos and message about with about six women over the last three

years. for the most part, the communications took place before my marriage though some have sadly took place after. to be clear, i have never met any of these women or had physical relationships at any time. >> lawmakers now are calling for an ethics probe including those in his own party and also house minority leader nancy pelosi. of course, the story continues. we'll have much more in the next half hour. mike, andrea? >> surae, his former colleague in the new york delegation republican congressman chris lee resigned after topless photos of him on the internet went public. what is congressman weiner's future like? >> the congressman said he's not resigning. he said i'm sorry. this is a mistake but there's no way i'm resigning. some people may have a different feel of what is to come but really, first is his ethics probe because the question now becomes did he use any cell phone or government property or computers and he

says he hasn't but of course, that continues. we'll talk to some political analysts in the next half hour. back to you, andrea. >> reporting live from capitol hill. thank you. an investigation is underway into an early morning shooting by a park police officer. a park police spokesman says an officer fired at a suspect around 1:30 this morning at hanes point. the man was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. authorities say the officers spotted the man inside the car with a gun in his hand and fired before he exited the car. what happened when councilman marion barry questioned brown's truthfulness? some of the language is a bit colorful here. >> the investigation including harry thomas today. you tell me -- you talking to me about integrity. may i have the -- you don't

even have the tags on your car. you have to be kidding me. >> you're out of your mind. >> you locked up by the same fbi i'm talking to. >> brown. >> you're out of your [ bleep ] mind. >> that was just one of many exchanges of that ilk. he claims gray's campaign paid him to verbally attack fenty during last year's primary. brown brought along receipts of what he says are copies of money orders that came from gray's top campaign aides. d.c.'s attorney general has filed a million dollar lawsuit against councilman harry thomas jr. the civil suit accuses thomas of receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars in illegal donations through his nonprofit organization. thomas denies the accusations. his attorney emphasizes these are just allegations and not true findings. a school's athletic fields are at the center of a lawsuit

still ahead, your virginia roads and more on that car fire. that's coming up at 5:18. >> making news now at 5:10, canada is reporting its first case of e. coli linked to the outbreak in europe. german health officials have cleared the organic soybean sprouts as the suspected source of contamination. after tests from them came back clean. 22 people have died in the outbreak. more than 2300 have become sick. ash from a chilean volcano is forcing thousands of people from their homes and canceling flights over part of argentina. the three mile long fissure has been erupting since saturday. a cloud of ash six miles high reached the atlantic ocean. crews are using heavy construction equipment to clear ash from some towns. >> a state of emergency is in effect for much of eastern arizona because of an out-of- control wildfire there. thousands of people have been evacuated. about 2500 firefighters are battling the flames which have already scorched more than 350

photos. this story is not going to go away it seems. >> the supreme court will not be jumping into that debate whether or not illegal immigrants should get tuition breaks. the justices have refused to hear a case on the issue now. it was a challenge to a california law that gives high school grat waits reduced tuition no matter if they're in the country illegally or not. a similar policy was signed into law in maryland last month. opponents here are trying to put a statewide referendum on the ballot in hopes of overturning the maryland law. >> virginia's senators are in a group of lawmakers calling for stricter driver safety standards in the bus industry. they sent a letter to transportation secretary ray lahood less than a week along the deadly accident. four people died in the crash. investigators believe the driver was overly tired. the driver is now facing charges. maryland drivers could catch a glimpse of one of america's most famous airplanes.

the fuselage from flight 1549 spent the night on i-95 parked at the truck scales before the tidings bridge, that's the miracle on the hudson plane. trucks will carry the fuselage through baltimore and on i-70 west through carroll, frederick and washington counties. the plane is en route to north carolina where it will be reassembled and displayed at an aviation museum. >> time for another your money report. >> new ideas for airport security. that's what jessica has. >> good morning. get your eyeballs ready. show time. one idea on the table for new airport security is to begin using iris scanners to match a flyer's eye to a passport. the international air transport association says that's one idea that could sharply reduce check-in time. the iris scans would tap information chips inside passports to identify passengers who might pose a security risk. travelers would pass through one of three 20-foot tunnels and be subject to different degrees of searches depending on the level of security risk. the system should be in place

within five years. private jets taking off. our partners at "usa today" report jssi, a company that arranges maintenance for hundreds of corporate aircraft, saw an increase over 11% in flight hours in the first three months of this year. in april, there was a 7% jump in flying time for private jets. private jet travel is making a comeback after being grounded by the recession and a public backlash against corporate excess. how much is a private lunch with billionaire warren buffett worth? how about $1.5 million. that's what someone is bidding in the annual online charity auction which runs all week. last year's lunch sold for $2.6 million, that was a record for the most expense of you charity item ever on ebay. proceeds will benefit a foundation. the winners usually dine, invite a couple of friends, they go to a new york steakhouse. the only thing off toffic is what's he's investing in next. fun to watch.

area. the ramp remains closed due to the car fire and fatal accident. still ahead, we're going to take a look at more maryland roads. andrea, that's up at 5:47. back to you. now, a commuter alert for those of you enduring the construction on the 14th street bridge. the traffic pattern will be changing again late tonight. ddot crews are scheduled to close lanes between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, drivers will have three lanes on the left of the temporary construction island. and one lane on the right. this is part of phase 8, the final stage of the project which should be finished this fall. well, you may be encountering some bumpy roads if you make a trip to the alexandria waterfront because crews are milling and paving along king street now. the work started this week and will continue over the next several weeks. the construction will be done on sunday through thursday 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. and parking is definitely going to be limited in that area during that time.

celebrate fairfax this weekend. a chance of an afternoon storm. also some afternoon storms. it is now time for angie goff with the latest timesaver traffic. >> thank you, howard. our top traffic story all morning long, this car fire out in laurel, the reason -- he found the yellow light. westbound 198, the ramp headed southbound remains closed. we're told this car fire involved a fatal so the investigators out there still unable to tell us when they plan to reopen the ramp. the good news is there is a way around it. you'll want to use gunpowder road, take that over to powder mill. that will allow you to hop back on to 95. good news there. other parts of the region, still checking out a-ok, 270 however, notice the stretch of yellow on our screen. outside, it looks like we're slowing down as we track our cameras out of urbana from route 80 down to 109 still doing ok past 121. back over to the graphics. this time, we'll shift our focus to the capital beltway.
