[ male announcer ] fiber beyond recognition. fiber one. . breaking news right now. firefighters are at a two alarm apartment place with several rescues. we're at the scene with a live report. plus the ugly side of the beauty business. a string of high profile heists has criminals targeting salons. and a heat alert.

safety concerns across the area as temperatures are about to soar near 100. and we begin tonight out of the breaking news where firefighters had to roll to the rescue of folks trapped inside of a burning apartment building. >> it happened in lannom and that's where gary nurenberg is live. >> reporter: we are at 5232 52323 8th avenue. residents here ran up to police officers who were on traffic duty alerting them to the fire in the building. those three ofters called it in and -- officers called it in and ran to the building itself and letting residents know the building was on fire. smoke and fire began to fill stair ways and the few remaining

on the upper floors did not have a way out. 100 firefighters fought this fire with 40 pieces of equipment. we're told that a mother and infant were among those rescued by ladders from the top floors. the only two rescued at this point. although it is believed there may have been other rescues here. one broken ankle, we believe, because a resident jumped to try to avoid the smoke and flame. there are four buildings. two have been directly because of the fire. two others have had to be closed because utilities are off. and tonight they're trying to find places for the residents of 60 apartments. they believe the fire may have started outside of the building on a terrace, but that is something they're investigating. few injuries. none of them serious.

back to you. >> lots of people affected. thank you. tonight's other big story is the weather and what it means. with more on the heat alert and when things finally cool off, let's get right to annie. >> anita, we're talking about temperatures that will feel well like into the 100 degrees by tomorrow late afternoon. so tomorrow you want to take it easy and be in the ac as much as you can. our heat alert. heat advisory shaded in orange. we're expecting heat index values of 100-105. it's most of the dc area and philadelphia. they got the red. that's the excessive heat warning. records -- i think we could set some more records tomorrow. now, for dc-reagan national, 97 degrees is the record for tomorrow set in 2007. baltimore 97. dulles 97. and, guess what, our highs are going to be in the upper 90s. so that can be definitely at least tied if not set new

records. right now it's still warm. a bit muggy too. around 79 in dc. overnight clear to partly cloudy skies. mild and muggy. lows 64-70 degrees. it is going to be warm and muggy as well. so definitely wear light colored clothing and loose clothing as well. now, meanwhile the first heat related deaths of the season were reported in maryland today. scott broom is live on the weather terrace with the number. >> reporter: those deaths, annie, happened last week in anne arundel county in maryland. they were elderly individuals and the reports come just as some climate scientists are poised to produce a brand new study tomorrow with some really surprising results. they predict in only 20 years, super hot summers are likely to be the norm. and in that time, relatively cool years will be hotter than the hottest summers we get right

now. how hot is it? try 105 this week in houston. temperatures so hot in wisconsin today that the pavement was buckling. all of this headed in washington's direction tomorrow. >> the emergence is an unprecedented heat regime has been occurring. >> reporter: and live tonight from stanford university in california, climate scientists say new data suggest we are witnessing the new normal and only 20-50 years from now it will be a lot worse. >> even the coolest is still hottest than the hottest season that has occurred in the late 20th century. >> reporter: the study is backed by the u.s. department of energy and the world bank essentially finding that climate change is coming a lot faster and a lot more harshly than many others have predicted. already this season washington has sweated under a series of heat advisories last week, enough heat to send dozens to

the hospital during memorial day celebrations. enough heat to kill two elderly maryland residents with underlying health problems last week according to maryland's health department. and on top of all of that, check this dramatic video today. an explosion on the surface of the sun recorded today launching a plasma storm towards earth. thankfully that sun flair is not expected to make the heat much worse. but starting tomorrow, it could foul up everything from aviation communications to gps devices. so it will be hot and just maybe your gps won't work so well. reporting live on the weather terrace, scott broom, 9news now. >> thank you, scott. over in howard county, a neighborhood watering hole looking a lot less neighborly after a violent attack and by stan der apathy. now -- bystander apathy. how could they just let this

happen. ken molestina is standing by. hopefully he has that answer. >> reporter: everyone is asking that question. it happened here at the second chance saloon back on may 29th and people say they're disgusted with what happened. they're bothered by it because not only did it happen in their local watering hole but they also tell me no one stepped in to stop it. we want to warn you the images you're about to see are graphic. howard county police are hoping you can identify the attacker in this surveillance video. take a good look at the top left-hand side of your screen. a woman walking into the second chance saloon gets socked by another woman standing nearby. she's knocked to the ground. the people near the victim either walk away or just simply stand and watch. >> it's scary. because i am here so much. >> reporter: a closer look at the video shows the attacker not only hit the victim several times but then stole her purse. she then makes a get away through the front door. folks we showed the video too are stunned at the disregard those near the victim showed.

>> i would not expect in the restaurant with so many people around that someone would do that or that no one would react. >> definitely a man should have stepped up. >> reporter: the second chance saloon has a reputation for being the neighborhood bar and restaurant, the type where everyone knows each other's names and the majority of the patrons all live nearby. on the night of the attack, they were catering to a different type of crowd. >> there was a private function with their own entertainment and their own security that obviously wasn't up to the task at the time. >> reporter: and although this task is being considered isolated, many patrons are upset no one in the surveillance video did anything to stop the vicious beating. >> it kind of makes me think they were all together and in on it. knowing that no one is going to stick up for you is scary. >> reporter: the woman in the video is still on the move tonight. police are offering a $500

reward for anyone that can provide information to lead to her arrest. we're live in howard county, ken molestina, 9news now. >> thank you, ken. now an update on a 12-year-old girl found in her home. jessica nguyen was stabbed to death. investigators are not releasing any information about her killing. so far nobody has been arrested. jessica's body was discovered one week ago in the basement of her family's townhome on raven avenue. stealing from the dead. tonight three men are behind bars accused of the unthinkable crime. >> this is a disturbing and disgusting trend. >> police say over the past two years, raneto porter has been stealing brass and bronze grave markers. he is a former employee at the cemetery. he and others stole from at least three different cemeteries and then tried sell the markers. one of the dealers called the

cops. that's what sparked the probe. >> having your loved one grave marker stolen is traumatic. >> well, tonight two of the four suspects are in custody. and arrest warrants have been issued for the other two. well, tomorrow could bring a verdict for a doctor charged with sexually assaulting dozens of patients all young children. the trial of pediatrician earl bradley only took four hours. the defense presented no case at all and prosecutors only called two witnesses. police officers who described finding hours of videotapes allegedly showing bradley raping children in his office. an update now on the tragically named saga wiener gate. he has at least one x rated video of the congressman but says he doesn't want to release it. he will make the picture public if they start going after the girl who accused him of sending

long silky hair extensions so much in demand that some folks are willing to break the law for them. at beauty salons all over the country, high end hair has become a prime target for thieves and it's happening right here. tonight lesli foster brings us the story of when looks steal. >> reporter: this hair heist you are looking at the latest crime wave moving across the country. in california, the shop owner says crooks made off with $60,000 worth of hair. bandits who hit a houston salon didn't even touch the cheap extensions. they went straight for the good stuff. >> this is the hair that people are stealing. >> reporter: it's called remi hair. women are clammering to get it

have been uncomfortable. a lot of sweaty people. we're looking at the humidity to go up tomorrow. i have the heat advisory in effect. so i would say, you know, get the kids, pack an extra water bottle in their backpacks for school tomorrow morning. and also drink plenty of fluids for yourself because it's going to be very hot these next couple of days. okay. here is a look at the heat advisory. the area shaded in orange expecting heat index values 100-1405 degrees. so i think by -- 100-105 degrees. so i think it's going to feel like 100. exercise in the morning if you can. i would not be surprised if this advisory is extended through thursday because thursday is also going to be just as hot. the satellite radar picture showing us we saw a series of storms go through but basically giving light rain towards our mountain communities but then the dc metro area did stay dry. we saw a few high level clouds earlier this afternoon. so hot and humid wednesday.

isolate the p.m. storms are possible. only a slight chance and then hot and humid again on thursday and then an unsettled weekend looking for shower activity and thunderstorms once again. overnight as you're sleeping, expecting clear and cloudy skies. tomorrow morning as you're getting ready for work, light colored clothes. temperatures 60s-70s. hopefully you don't have to be outside in the afternoon. hot and humid conditions. air quality is orange. that is bad for sensitive groups. that is for elderly and kids and people that have asthma. highs will be 94 and 96 and some locations will get into the 100-degree mark. so beat the heat. how are you going to did that, stay hydrated. eat light meals. limit your time in the sunshine and don't forget your pets. don't leave them in the cars and

keep the walks short. the pads can burn from the asphalt. cumberland 98 degrees. oakland we're looking at 85 degrees. also warm in our mountain communities. you see a couple 100 also for leesburg. andrews air force base 98 degrees. annapolis 93. and gaithersburg 98 degrees. so a hot day. here is your seven-day out look. so it's hot and humid. not just through tomorrow but thursday with a chance for some isolated storms as well. then on friday around 90 degrees. the cold front making its way. so i think we'll get a little bit of relief by the end of the work week. not a whole lot. but then the weekend saturday and sunday, temperatures in the upper 80s and a better chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms this weekend. of course this weekend is celebrate fairfax. and i think you'll want to bring the umbrella just in case. plan for that. i know i'll be out there on sunday in the afternoon. but it looks like by monday we'll be more seasonable. partly cloud' and a chance for some -- cloudy and a chance for
