hit. >> you work with camps -- the washington capitals youth camp, you also work with students k- 12. are their parents aware of what the risks are? are you more involved now in making sure players don't get back on the field after they've had some sort of hit? >> well, i think hits like you talked about in the playoffs and the hit to somebody like sydney crosby has really brought to the forefront the fact that this is kind of the silent epidemic. and i think this law has done a great job to bring awareness both to parents, to coaches, and to the players in terms of the significance of continuing to play in light of the potential concussion. >> if you come back from a concussion and suffer another and maybe even another as you talk about sydney crosby, what is the lasting effects of this type of head injury? >> fortunately, most kids who have a concussion are ultimately going to be fine. but there is a relationship between the number of

concussions and the frequency with which they occur that have a more lasting impact and can decrease the work -- or can increase the period of time before they can come back to play. >> is the biggest benefit of this law awareness -- awareness on the part of coaches, awareness on the part of parents? >> i think so. i mean, it's definitely mandating to kids who have a suspected concussion get out of the fame or whatever the activity is. but they have to be evaluated before they're cleared to return and they must be evaluated by an appropriate professional and i think what it really does is raise the public's awareness about the underlying problem of concussions that really are pretty pervasive. >> again the symptoms, the vomiting, the slurred speech and headache. could it really be a silent injury where maybe a student doesn't have that and further down the line, they may pass out or something? >> yeah, you bring up a good point. the fact is, that concussion

symptoms are not always what we have been led to believe which is a sudden loss of consciousness which happens really one out of 10 times, most of the symptoms can be variable and mild. something like being lightheaded or maybe feel a little sleepy or mild memory impairment. i can't remember exactly what happened at the time. but there's a broad spectrum of symptoms and signs that patients present with and it only be several hours or several days later when they first present. >> dr. ben schaffer, thank you for coming in this morning. >> thank you for having me. surae? all right, thank you andrea, making news now at 5:51. a nigerian born man is set to appear in los angeles federal court today on charges-a stowaway on a plane. he's accused of sneaking on to a plane from new york to los angeles last week without a valid boarding pass or government issued id. people in mexico sought shelter from tropical storm arlene. the first named storm of the
