this is 9news now. good evening everyone. i'm matt in tonight for bruce johnson. thanks for joining us. the holiday weekend turned deadly. three people are dead, another is fighting for her life after their car slammed into a tree in the 1300 block of mississippi avenue in southeast dc. police still don't know what happened and are trying to figure out if speed was a factor. armando trull has the very latest. >> reporter: matt, this deadly accident is still under investigation by the dc police department's major crash unit. this is what we know. the 2007 mitsubishi was traveling at a high rate of speed here on mississippi avenue and then it hit this speed bump and went flying out of control. the sedan rolled three times and as it did, three of the

four people inside were tossed out of the car like rag dolls, including the driver. a rear seat passenger remains in the car as it crashed down an embankment into two large trees. a male passenger died on the scene. the second passenger and the driver died at the hospital. the only passenger not ejected is now in critical condition. >> and this deadly accident is one of the reasons why many police departments through the metro dc area will be having dui check points throughout the fourth of july weekend. reporting in southeast dc, i'm armando trull, matt, back to you. >> in other news tonight, fire investigators in anne arundel county are trying to figure out what sparked a deadly fire. flames started engulfing the home around 1:00 this afternoon. when rescue crews arrived, one person was already dead and a woman in her late 60s was air lifted to hopkins with life threatening injuries. a six-year-old boy is recovering after almost

drowning in a local swimming pool. the child was attending a city run camp in alexandria. he was found unresponsive in a 4-foot deep area of the pool. life guards pulled him out and gave mouth to mouth reseesation until rescue crews arrived. today the swimming pool staff said they are glad their safety training paid off. >> it was a mixture of emotions. i mean, on one hand i was afraid, but on the other hand i know i was trained properly. >> in my five years of experience, i never thought i would have to do this. we are preventative life guarding. >> thank goodness the boy was breathing by the time rescue workers arrived. he was taken to children's hospital as a precaution. just in time for the long holiday weekend, hot weather has returned. annie, we are hoping for more of the same for the fourth. >> fourth looks good. we could see some wet weather coming this way. i'll talk about that in a

moment. first right now it is warm out there. 92 in downtown. 90 in gaithersburg. we made it up to 95 degrees today at reagan national. so well above the average high. now the reason why this heat feels tolerable for july is our dew points are still fairly low in the mid 50s here in downtown. when they get to the 60s and 70s, that's when it starts to feel uncomfortable. tonight, partly cloudy and mild and becoming mostly cloudy. maybe a passing shower or sprinkle. 67 to 72 degrees. here's your beach and boating forecast. 87, 92 towards the bay. southwest winds at 10 to 15. for the holiday on monday, partly cloudy, 87 and 92 degrees also and northwest winds at 10 to 15. let's head over to the east on the ocean. for sunday, scattered showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. 86 and 91 degrees and winds will be out of the south 10 to 15 miles per hour. we'll talk more about the chance for that storm tomorrow

and your holiday forecast coming up later. back to you. thanks very much. four families are trying to recover after a devastating fire made their homes unlivable. flames engulfed several houses yesterday forcing the residents to find temporary shelter. for one large family losing their house is not the worst part. brittany morehouse has their story. >> his whole life spent in a house now torched. >> i lost everything. my clothes, underwear, shoes. the only thing i have right now is my shorts and shirt on. and these boots. >> kevin says to return today, the remains of a devastating fire is almost too much for his family bare. >> valuables like photographs. his mom, a single parent who works as a housekeeper shows us one picture of her mom and dad. it's among the handful they manage to save, but there is no

saving the antiques from al salvador his aunt keeps upstairs. >> don't worry, we're going to help you. >> fire started in the back of one of these houses and you can tell because the damage is extensive. four families were displaced total, including nine people who lived with kevin. >> all family. >> most of them were home when the fire started friday evening. >> we pass fire crackers outside. my mom opens the door. >> it took more than 100 firefighters to battle the blaze while loved ones scrambled. >> i had to go upstairs. most of the important things was my mom, like her green card. >> the only relief is the family does have insurance says campos. they are in a hotel until they can find temporary housing for the next 8 to 9 months. brittany morehouse, 9news now. >> we don't know the exact

cause of the fire. investigators say it appears to be accidental. an offduty police officer becomes the victim of an attempted carjacking. it happened in capital heights, maryland. the officer says he fired his service weapon to defend himself. he was taken to the hospital for treatment. the officer was treated for minor injuries. his name has not been released, but we're told he's a member of the mt. ranier police department. police departments in northern virginia are teaming up to patrol for drunk drivers. search police officers including falls church, vienna, and fairfax will conduct drunk driving patrols. exfra eyes for dwi's. one big thing to celebrate this holiday weekend, lower gas prices. regular gas in the dc area is now averaging $3.60 a gallon down 8 cents from just one week ago and down 25 cents from a month ago. before we get too happy, keep in mind this time last year we

were paying just $2.72 a gallon. to find the cheapest place to fill up in your neighborhood, head to our website, wusa9.com and click on the pain at the pump icon. some more good news this holiday weekend. this time for seafood lovers. maryland seafood dealers say crabs are plentiful. prices on the eastern shore are as low as $100 a bushel. prices are higher here in the washington area. the chesapeake bay population has been rebounding. despite a cold winter, the catch has been good so far this year. still ahead on 9news, the worst wild fire in new mexico history showing no signs of slowing down. we'll tell you about the latest efforts to contain the blaze. but first, a day after being released from house arrest, the former head of the ims is no longer under house arrest.

just one day after a judge lifted the house arrest order on domonique strauss-kahn. the rape charges still stand, but yesterday prosecutors told the judge that they found serious problems with the credibility of the hotel maid who says strauss-kahn raped her. the judge lifted his house arrest, allowing strauss-kahn to travel anywhere in the u.s., but not abroad. firefighters are holding

their ground against what is being called the largest wild fire in new mexico history. los alamos is safe for the moment. after flames came dangerously close. karen brown has the very latest. >> the fire burning near the town of los alamos keeps growing. it's no longer threatening the nation's premier nuclear weapons laboratory. they returned saturday to prepare it for business as usual. >> we're checking things like the air handling systems to make sure that the filters weren't clogged by the smoke. >> smoke? that's everywhere. it blankets the town of los alamos. some have been in shelters for nearly a week and fire officials can't say when they'll be able to lift the evacuation order. >> we want all resources that are available since this is the number one fire priority in the country. >> the fire's blackened more

prince william and wife katherine are in montreal as they continue their tour of north america. today the royal couple took part in a tree planting ceremony and visited the canadian war museum. when they arrive, will and kate are scheduled to visit a children's hospital or taking part in a cooking workshop. the duke and duchess of cambridge come to the u.s. on july 8. celebrations continue in

change for tomorrow. some unsettled weather coming this way. grab the umbrella if you have family in town, especially tomorrow. right now temperatures are in the 90s in arlington. 85 in reston. great falls 90 degrees. so numbers are pretty high. they are above average. because of the dew points being so low, it feels bearable. the silent radar picture showing us high pressure in control for today, but that's moving off the coast and we have unsettled weather coming this way. we'll see clouds rolling in and yes some scattered showers and thunderstorms. unsettled weather arriving. nice for dinner outside or a barbecue. grab the umbrella tomorrow morning. the fourth of july looks pretty nice. especially for those fireworks. here's your future cast. tonight the clouds move in. we have showers up to the north and west of us. maybe a passing shower or sprinkle overnight in the dc metro area. now tomorrow morning, you'll see some clouds as you're waking up and then in the afternoon expecting some scattered showers and thunderstorms to go through the

area tomorrow afternoon and early in the evening. not expecting them to be severe at this point or strong, but we're watching that as a possibility. monday looks pretty good. maybe some light stuff to the south of us, but only some isolated storms are expected for monday. by the time fireworks roll around, we should be done with that threat and it should be nice. so tonight partly cloudy and mild. then becoming mostly cloudy, a passing shower or sprinkle possible after midnight. lows will be really mild. 67 to 72 degrees. winds are southwest and they'll be light. around downtown, lower 70s. so it's going to feel warm out there. leesburg 71. into the 60s for manassas and winchester, annapolis cooling down to just 74 degrees. tomorrow morning partly to mostly cloudy. a milder start. grab the umbrella. you'll need the umbrella because by the afternoon, while it's warm and humid, we have scattered showers and thunderstorms. highs will be 89 to 94 degrees and winds out of the west at 10 miles per hour.
