i'm matt in tonight for bruce johnson. thanks for joining us. a big holiday weekend means lots of people will be on the roads. some after drinking too much alcohol. to keep the area safe, area police are stepping up police. armando trull is live with details. armando. >> reporter: this is the cross roads and to the north of me is montgomery county. to the east is prince georges county. to the south, takoma park and then dc. officers from all of those jurisdictions are out and about making sure that no one is driving drunk and it's not just here. >> this traffic stop on 495 near tyson's corner is one of hundreds that police officers will be making over the fourth of july weekend. >> we have a lot of people out tonight doing dwi enforcement. >> 62 officers from multiple jurisdictions will be saturating highways and roads instead of setting up check points. >> it's a little more

difficult to detect as many drunk drivers. we feel like saturation patrol is much more effective. >> you can cover more. >> gives you much more mobility. you can look at several cars, you can move around to different locations. >> police say alcohol sales always spike over the fourth of july weekend. and some people will choose to drink and drive. >> in the district, one accident has always claimed three lives after a speeding car lost control, flipped several times, and crashed into two trees around 2:00 a.m. at oxen run park. the female driver and two passengers were thrown from the car and died. a fourth passenger is in critical condition. >> we did see evidence of alcohol in the vehicle, but until the autopsy is done, we cannot say for sure how much alcohol or drugs played a factor in this fashion. >> now matt, we understand the prince georges county police will have check points as will

dc police. all of this activity throughout the area will continue until about 2:00 or 3:00 a.m. monday the fourth of july. reporting live, i'm armando trull, back to you. >> armando, thanks very much. police in macon, georgia, are all but certain that the dismembered remains they found on thursday are those of lauren giddings from laurel, maryland. authorities no longer consider giddings a missing person. giddings neighbor is behind bars as a person of interest in the case after telling reporters he was inside her apartment shortly after she disappeared. showers are moving through the dc area tonight so the question is, will they stick around for the rest of the holiday weekend? annie is here with the forecast. how is it looking? >> a possibility of scattered showers and thunderstorms for tomorrow. we saw a few go through this evening. very light as you can see right here through loudoun county and frederick earlier tonight. we are seeing mostly cloudy

to find temporary shelter. for one large family, losing their house isn't the worst part. brittany manufacture morehouse has their story. >> i lost everything. my clothes, underwear, shoes. the only thing i have right now is my shorts and shirt on and these boots. >> 16-year-old kevin campos says returning was almost too much for his family to bare. valuables like photographs. >> his mom, a single parent who works as a housekeeper shows us one picture of her mom and dad. it's among the handful they managed to save. but there is no saving the antiques from el salvador. >> she cries. >> the fire started in the back of these houses. the damage is extensive. four families were displaced

total including nine people who lived with kevin. >> we are all family. >> most of them were home when the fire started friday evening. >> we heard fire crackers outside. fire almost hit her face. >> it took almost 100 firefighters to battle the blaze while loved ones scrambled. >> i was the last one to come out. her green card. >> the only relief is the family does have insurance, says campos. they are in a hotel until they can find temporary housing for the next 8 to 9 months. brittany morehouse, 9news now. >> we don't know the exact cause of the fire. investigators say it appears to be accidental. besides our nation's independence, another thing to celebrate this holiday weeken regular gas in the dc area is now averaging $3.60 a gallon. down 8 cents in just one week

it is very likely that at this time tomorrow the fate of casey anthony will be at the hands of a jury. closing arguments in the murder trial begin first thing sunday morning. karen brown has the details from florida. >> casey anthony's defense attorneys have one last chance to explain to the jury why they didn't make good on their promises. in opening statements, they told the seven women and five men that anthony's two-year-old daughter, caylee, accidentally drowned. but in 33 days of testimony, never offered firm proof to support that claim. they also told the jury that anthony behaved badly when her daughter was missing because she was sexually abused by her father, but he denied it. >> they needed to throw a hail mary and every time they have attempted that, they fumbled. >> the burden of proof lies

with the prosecution. they contend 25-year-old anthony suffocated her daughter. offered only circumstantial evidence. no dna, no proof of exactly how caylee died. what they have going for them is anthony's erratic behavior. her lies, her partying, and the prosecution may have gotten one of its biggest breaks when the final witnesses testimony suggested that casey anthony's mother lied on the stand to protect her. cindy anthony testified she had searched the family's computer for chloroform, that the prosecution says was used to kill caylee. but cindy anthony's boss testified she was at work when the chloroform search took place, which puts the spotlight back on her daughter. >> it's the chloroform is the instrument of death, then you have premeditation. karen brown, cbs news, orlando, florida. if anthony is found guilty

minnesota closed for business. among other things, this means all minnesota state parks are now closed forcing campers to alter their plans for the long weekend. the shutdown went into effect yesterday after lawmakers could not agree on how to solve the budget deficit. >> in other political news, republican presidential candidate, michele bachmann is spending the long weekend campaigning, making the round in iowa. >> it's very important to be here and have a presence here because the values and opinions count for the nation. >> the minnesota congresswoman is trying to drum up support before the august straw poll in ames, iowa. bachmann's tour of the state comes less than a week after she officially announced her candidacy. overseas the country of monico is celebrating after the country's ruler married charlene whitlock in a lavish

ceremony. the couple reaffirmed their union in a religious ceremony. 3500 guests, including 20 heads of state and members of the international elite attended the wedding, followed by fireworks show and an elaborate dinner. britain's royal couple, prince william and katherine are in montreal. the couple made a visit to a hospital. some 35 demonstrators gathered outside the hospital to protest the couple's nine-day visit, calling william and katherine parasites and war criminals. but a larger crowd of about 150 people welcome the royals. the newlyweds are on their first official overseas visit as husband and wife. well a lot of us are planning to cook hamburgers this holiday weekend, but in california, organizers of one county fair are hoping to cook the biggest burger ever. the fair is celebrating its 99th anniversary by trying to
