annie knows the answer. annie. >> we are expecting showers and thunderstorms to roll through the area. some i'm sorry to tell you could be strong and some could be severe. let's take a look at where that threat is. here's a look at doppler radar. i'm going to take you and show you the threat for where the severe weather could be. as the area is shaded in yellow, where we had that severe thunderstorm watch until 10:00 p.m. tonight. this includes the northern neck and lower southern maryland. again through 10:00 p.m., including calvert, charles, and st. mary's county. here's a look to show you. we have the showers, basically just to the west of us. around warrenton and generally south of interstate 66. we have the best chance for thunderstorms and severe weather to take place. also through fredericksburg, we are seeing light showers and light activity. i think this could be entering the dc area. the lightning associated with these storms, they are generally south of dc.

so your fireworks forecast for tonight, we're going to stay cloudy. mostly cloudy conditions and by 9:00, 83 degrees and at that point, around dc isolated thunderstorms and it will be warm. we'll talk more about your holiday forecast a little later. >> america celebrates its 235th birthday, people from all across the region are heading down to the national mall for a giant celebration, of course, right now it's a matter of trying to angle into that perfect spot for tonight's fireworks spectacular and armando trull is on the mall with a preview. armando. >> well as you said, lesli, location, location, location. it worked for real estate, certainly worked for the fourth of july firework display. you know what? there really isn't a bad spot anywhere around the memorial, around the monument. a good place underneath those trees. folks have staked out their prime piece of real estate. they are waiting for firework displays. that's going to happen in a few hours. right now the weather is

looking pretty good. everything is so far, so good. the fourth of july national parade was an acheck acollectic of lively performances. by all accounts, a great time was had by everyone. those who wanted more got it at the smithsonian folk festival where columbia was showcased. >> people laying music, doing dance presentations, telling tales, cooking traditional food. >> traditional columbian fish. >> and right now you're looking at a live image of folks waiting for the fireworks display. it is not a crowd as big as we've seen in past years. we're not sure why that is. maybe they'll show up later. at least as we reported, the temperature has gone down a bit. it does not look like any rain

in sight. we could have a rain-free fourth of july fireworks here on the mall. reporting live, i'm armando trull. >> armando, thank you. metro is providing extra fourth of july rail service tonight, but you should know that the smithsonian station is closed so you'll want to use other stations if you plan to head to the mall. they will reopen after the fireworks show and that is scheduled to conclude around 9:30 tonight. tonight's fireworks could be the only light that some folks in arlington will see because crews are busy trying to restore power to residents of the yorktown and chesterbrook neighborhoods. this after sunday's fast moving storm. delia is live off of north gleeve road to bring us the latest. how are things getting back to normal, delia? >> there has been progress made, but it's a mess. 24 hours after the storm hit and you can see a number of crews are here trying to restore power to about 3200

households in arlington county, many of those residents live just a couple blocks away. >> the chaos. >> the sleeping six month old double know it, but his dad had a couple close calls last night. >> a big gust of wind came out of nowhere. tried to turn around and go home, tree falls in front of me and get in my house and two large oaks crashed our cars. >> a ma coburst touch down just after 6:20 sunday evening with wind gusts up to 70 miles per hour. >> i have never seen anything like that before. i heard this terrible noise. i thought it was lightning, but the next thing i know, all these branches were in my living room. >> a couple close calls, but luckily we're okay. >> and everyone is okay in that neighborhood. i can tell you that i called dominion power, they couldn't give me an exact time of restoration for a lot of those folks who are anxious to get

the lights back on. it could be at least until tomorrow when power is restored to some of those folks. now just a reminder, when you're going about cleaning up after the storm and taking a look at a lot of those downed trees, if a tree falls on the sidewalk or if it falls out here in the road, that is county property and county will pay for that removal. however, if the tree falls on your property, it's your responsibility. lesli. >> it's the painful truth, but we have to keep that in mind, especially with this storm season. thanks so much. a bicyclist from forest hills, new york, was killed by a falling tree on friday. the accident happened at mile marker 33 on the cno canal near whites ferry, maryland. >> 56-year-old neil reich stopped to put on rain gear when the tree fell. he was on an overnight adventure on the trail with a friend and fellow cyclist. >> that's too bad because everybody out here is having a good time. >> i feel sorry for the man,

but i'm glad it didn't happen to me. >> we were lucky to stay in the building and have shelter and rode out the storm. >> the safest place in a storm is indoors or in a vehicle, but according to online sources like windernesssurvival.net, the best place is under a thick canopy of small trees. the fourth of july took a tragic turn. a six-year-old boy drowned at sandy state park in anne arundel county this morning. up to a half an hour. he was pulled from the chesapeake bay. he did get cpr, but sadly did not survive. no holiday break for those involved in the murder trial of casey anthony. she is the young florida mother accused of killing her two-year- old daughter, caylee. today the jury began deliberations and prosecutors contend anthony killed her

daughter because she no longer wanted to be a mother. defense attorneys say caylee accidentally drowned in a swimming pool. if convicted the judge could sentence casey anthony to death. the british used the fourth of july to honor former president, ronald reagan. a 10-foot statue of the 40th u.s. president was unveiled outside the u.s. embassy in london. the bronze figure stands alongside other american presidents, dwight eisenhower and franklin d. roosevelt. reagan's strongest ally during the cold war, margaret thatcher was too ill to attend the ceremony, but she did issue a statement, calling ronald reagan a great president whose strength brought freedom to millions of people as the iron curtains finally came down. the secret service will investigate the hacking of fox's political twitter account. someone posted a series of six fake tweets this morning on fox news saying that president obama had been shot to death in iowa.

now fox called those tweets malicious and false and they are demanding a detailed investigation from twitter explaning exactly what happened. it will be a powerful independence day celebration at the white house this evening. military families will join president obama for a big barbecue dinner. and they will be joined by staff from throughout the administration and their families for a uso concert followed by a viewing of the fireworks from the south lawn. meanwhile the first family is getting used to having a teenager in the house. malia obama turned 13 today. happ birthday. still ahead, one of us will take you to a naturalization ceremony for new americans. plus, see what happens when more than 5,000 pounds of illegal fireworks explode. those stories and more are just ahead.

on this fourth of july, monica, we want to know what color you declare for the night. >> i declare it to be green and that's because all around town, traffic is great. most people had the day off, which is a good thing. if you are planning to head downtown for the fireworks, here's what you need to know. road closures are in effect until 11:00 tonight on the east side of the capital all the way down the national mall. the best bet is to take metro, if you are just heading out the door. metro is looking fine. you have trains every 4 minutes into downtown until midnight tonight. that's going to be a good bet for you and nonpeek fares are in effect. let's take a look outside. all the crossings are fine. they move the camera, but everyone on the pennsylvania toe mac river is fine as well. back to you, lesli. >> you saw the hotel room at an unbelievable rate. that discount may not be such a

it is a tradition in the d.c. area. today's fourth of july parade on mcarthur boulevard in the palisades neighborhood of northwest washington. and today more than 24,000 people became u.s. citizens in 350 ceremonies and that includes 100 people in mt. vernon. brittany morehouse talks to one mother who serving in the military. helping wounded warriors is one of the many reasons why she's proud to be an american. >> well i came to the united

states about seven years ago. and i always wanted to enter the u.s. military. >> patriotism was in her blood before she became a u.s. citizen. >> one nation, under god. >> and both of carline's children were born in the u.s. >> i'm glad because of the freedom and opportunities that are there for them, you know, and i guess now i'm a part of that. i am very excited. >> and so are they. >> i'm happy she's an american now. >> an american wearing a navy uniform. > we're the ones that take care of the wounded warriors, the retired veterans and we are on the battlefield also. > wingate lives in leesburg, but stationed in bethesda. it was her one year anniversary of the joining the military. >> i enjoy serving in the

july holiday. a lot of folks have fireworks planned and for fireworks to be outside. here's a look at the severe weather risk. the areas in yellow includes northern neck and central virginia. stafford county, this is through 10:00 tonight and we're looking at the possibility of some severe thunderstorms going through those areas. live doppler 9,000hd showing us right around the dc metro and beltway, for the most part dry, some cloudy conditions. it's out to the west of us where we're seeing showers and some thunderstorms. let's first zoom into pawpaw and looking at just around 81, martinsburg and charlestown seeing some light showers where you see the yellow just north of winchester. we head down to the south. we can see also manassas getting light rain. stafford and fredericksburg. i put this into the future cast motion to show you what's going to happen in the next hour where these showers could be going and they could be coming through the dc area in the next

hour or so. all right, let's take a look at our doppler radar to show you where the most lightning strikes again, just to the south. there's dc and most of it to the richmond area. we have the threat for severe weather to the south of dc. the better chances of stormy weather. all right, so if you are outside waiting for the fireworks show or on the barbecue, here is thunderstorm safety. get inside if you see storm coming through. secure the loose objects, lower your deck and patio umbrella and stay away from win dose. right now temperatures in the upper 80s in downtown. 282 in manassas. 79 degrees in winchester. so still unsettled tonight. severe thunderstorm watch in effect until 10:00 p.m. for our southern counties. damaging wind is the major threat and the biggest concern from these storms. lightning also a possibility and locally heavy downpours. tuesday, as you are heading back to work, it is hot again. here's your future cast. one model could be happening.

mostly showers and storms are scattered. 11:00 looks like manassas, culpeper, you could be getting showers and storms as well. overnight, most of it is to the south of dc and we may see clouds start to clear out by tomorrow midday. for tonight, a lot of folks are going to be outside. mostly cloudy and mild. showers and thunderstorms are possible. some could be severe. around downtown, pretty mild. near mid 70s. now for tomorrow morning as you are heading back to work, it's going to be much more pleasant. mostly cloudy and mild. temperatures 60s and 70s. a lot more sunshine tomorrow as well. partly to mostly sunny and still hot. a stray storm still possible, mainly to the south once again. highs around 90 degrees, northwest winds at 5 to 10. around downtown, 90. 89 for manassas. here's your seven-day outlook. so temperature wise we cool down into the mid 80s on friday. that frontal system is just hanging around the next several
