got a recap. armando trull has been down there following all of the action. >> reporter: matt, right now, if you take a look, washington monument is almost desserted. that wasn't the case a few hours ago as people came by to wish uncle sam a happy birthday. the fireworks display lasted 17 minutes. >> it was worth the 20 hours in the car with them to come see this. >> reporter: and used 14 thousand pounds 14,000 pounds of explosives. >> it was great. it was a great experience. >> reporter: the pyro tech necks captivate technics captivated thousands of people. >> they're the best fireworks i've ever seen. >> reporter: the final three minutes were show stoppers. >> i really liked when there was like the huge fireworks. like it was like boom. >> reporter: the national mall and the washington monument were not the only sfots in dc where they were celebrating -- spots in dc where they were

honor of america's 235th birthday. the celebration continued at the white house with a barbecue and concert for more than 1200 people and their families. president obama thanked men and women for their service and sacrifice. he told them the country was proud of each and every one of them. after that there was a concert by the group train. >> hello, everybody. happy 4th of july. answered check out the scene in new york city. thousands gathered along the hudson river to watch 40,000 shells featuring 50 different designs light up the sky. the annual macy's 4th of july celebrated the statute of liberty. closer to home, residents are looking for freedom of their own tonight. freedom from the power outages that still have them in the dark. gary nurenberg joins us live now

from arlington with an update. gary. >> reporter: the lights in back of me should give you some clue on this day when they celebrated what happened in 1776. 1777 is the magic number. the number of customers without power. that is down, however, from a high of 9,367 last night. on a darkened powerless street in arlington, fireworks served as the backdrop for utility crews dealing with downed lines that left thousands without electricity for more than a day. >> they must have cooled off a little. the rain came through because it hasn't been too terribly bad in the house. it's been durable. >> reporter: you just got good news five minutes ago. >> yes, we did. the electricity is back on. >> and the food is our concern. we're trying to keep everything fresh. >> reporter: so with the power back on, we went to check. >> this is some of the chicken and meat i have in here.

it's still pretty frozen. it may not be too bad. yes. hamburger is still frozen. it could have been much worse, yes. absolutely. >> reporter: more than 24 hours after the storm, crews are at work restoring utilities. but as you can see from the downed power lines, there is still plenty of work to do. in a van 20 yards away. >> we have an mp3 player. i have all of the batteries i need. i have the sunday post on paper. because, oh, no. there is no online. there is not even a phone. >> reporter: some parents ducked under the yellow tape because of downed power lines helping their children climb over wires they hoped were not energized. and if the power stays off much longer. >> i have another couple of bottles of porter and i'm just going to stay as -- i mean, what am i going to do about it? >> reporter: well, there is no answer to that question, but if you would like to know when your

power is coming back on, dominion power says you can call 866-dom-help which is 866-766-4357 and they can tell you when your power will be on. for customers 6:00 tomorrow night is going to be the worst. if you're watching the broadcast by a television set that is powered by a battery, good chance your power is back on or you didn't lose it in the first place. >> thank you very much. we're learning more about a bike rider caught in a storm and killed on the toll path. a bike rider from new york stopped along the path near whites barry to put on rain gear. that's when a tree fell on top of him. we talked with other cyclists caught in the same storm. >> we were lucky to stay in the building and get shelter and kind of road out the stores. >> rescue workers had to chain

saw their way to get into rice but they were not able to save him. he was cycling on a trip that would have taken them from harper's ferry to georgetown. is the threat of a thunderstorm all gone? annie is here with the forecast. how is it looking? >> the severe threat is gone. we have light showers and scattered activity just west of dc out towards warrenton and just south of interstate 66. let's zoom on in and show you where the showers are taking in. also just around reston we're seeing light shower activity. i'm not expecting anything really severe at all overnight. but we did see some pretty good storms south of us basically in the richmond area but we didn't see no severe warnings issued despite the severe thunderstorm watch in effect. so what are we expecting for the rest of the night?

mostly cloudy and mild. scattered showers and rain possible. isolated thunderstorm possible. not severe. lows will be 66-74 degrees. tomorrow lots of us are heading back to work. we need a special grab the umbrella and your sunglasses just in case. by 7:00 it will be mild. 60s and 70s. by 9:00 looking great with more sunshine but a chance for some storms isolated tomorrow. we'll talk about that in a little bit. >> all right. thank you. the holiday almost turned deadly for one man just before 7:00 this evening. the 38-year-old man was playing with a toy boat on the water. the toy stalled and when he tried to swim out and get it, he went under the water. when rescuers finally pulled him out, he was unresponsive. he was taken to the hospital and is in critical condition tonight. meanwhile one water incident did turn deadly for a young boy in maryland of the 6-year-old drowned at a state park this morning. he may have been under water in an unguarded section of the beach for up to half an hour.

the boy was pulled from the chesapeake bay. cpr was given but he did not survive. the woman accused of brutally killing her co-worker inside bethesda's athletic store will be in court this week. brittany norwood is charged with first degree murder for stabbing and brutally beating jayna murray back in march. after the murder, norwood concocted a story that both women were attacked by masked robbers. she's due in court friday morning. in other news, casey anthony will have to wait at least one more day before learning her fate. the jury ended the first day without a verdict. she is facing a first degree murder charge for the death of her 2-year-old daughter caylee. the jury is being sequestered tonight and will re zum deliberations tomorrow morning -- resume deliberations tomorrow morning. if convicted, anthony could face the death penalty. the senate is back in session tomorrow, the house on wednesday. they're cutting short their holiday break to decide what do

it with the borrowing limit. if congress fails to raise the limit by early august, the country could default on its loan. to avoid that, president obama says we need to raise taxes but republicans think of that five letter word more like a four letter word. >> republicans are opposed to any tax hikes, particularly during a fragile economic recovery. >> if the federal government does default on its loan, things could get nasty. for example, credit card companies could start charging us sky high interest rates. joe biden marked the holiday by taking to twitter. in his first tweet he asked all of us to remember all of the troops in combat. if you want to follow mr. biden, his twitter name is at gp. super skimming, stealing your debit and credit card information is a billion dollar

on a day when americans celebrate their independence in england, the british are paying tribute to one of our leaders. haig was the 40th commander in chief. across the country, the skies are filled with patriotism tonight. but in kingston, tennessee, they're also filled with the ashes of a dead woman. 87-year-old katherine walker died in april with lung cancer. her family had her remains cremated. tonight they sent them up in the sky with some 4th of july fireworks. the reason? the family says watching the fireworks was one of walker's favorite things and she would want to be a part of tonight's festivities. tonight search teams have given up hope of finding anymore survivors from a charter fishing boat that capsized in mexico. one american is confirmed dead.

seven others now presumed drown. the boat went under yesterday during a storm. it carried 27 american touristses and a crew of 17. those who survived spent hours in the water clinging to debris and waiting for help. >> they all just had to jump off the boat and get life jackets on and they indicated they had been in the water for about 15 hours. >> incredible story. the u.s. navy helped in the search by sending helicopters. in tonight's consumer alert, according to the u.s. secret service, atm skimming is on the rise. more than a billion dollars is stolen every year. lesli foster helps you protect yourself and your assets. >> reporter: laurie uses her debit card for everything from groceries to gas. $400 was gone. >> our account was zero. we didn't know how we were going

to pay our bills. >> reporter: laurie was a victim of skimming. false card readers and hidden wireless cameras are used by thieves to swipe bank account info. >> you'll download that information and they'll create a bogus card. >> reporter: kurt with the electronic funds transfer association says today's skimming devices like this bogus card reader are increasingly sophisticated. >> a well done crime. something that looks just like that which you would typically use when you swipe your card. >> reporter: it can be attached to the outside of an atm vestibule or even a gasoline pump, and that's where laurie's bank beliefs she was skimmed. >> we didn't see anything suspicious. >> reporter: they said check the card reader for anything suspicious. >> check for tape residue or glue residue where something has

evening. no severe thunderstorm warnings issued tonight. that's the good news. we still see a little bit of action on the doppler radar. look at the green you see out to the west basically out towards 66 and 81. we have some showers. light stuff here. not amounting to a whole lot. but around warrenton, chantilly getting some light showers and bethesda getting light sprinkles as well. 73 in leesburg. all the way down to 69 in martinsburg. now, what we're expecting the next few days, cloudy but dry as you're heading back to work and then becoming sunny and hot in a lot of places. chance of showers and thunderstorms do remain with us pretty much all week. the frontal system doesn't really want to move on that quickly through. mere is the future cast -- here is the future cast. maybe to the bay we can see some activity. maybe thunderstorm or moderate rainfall there. tomorrow morning some cloudy conditions. the clouds do start to clear
