birthday with parades, barbecues, and, of course, fireworks. here in new york, it was the annual extravaganza over the hudson river. in chicago, thousands turned out to watch at navy pier on lake michigan. in houston, music and fireworks at the freedom over texas show. and in los angeles, a stunning display at cbs studio city. in washington this morning, we can expect fireworks of another kind, as senate republicans and democrats return to work on a deal to raise the nation's debt limit. house members return tomorrow. joel brown is in washington with more on this. good morning, joel. so, what are the chances an agreement can be reached soon? >> well, betty, let's put it this way, if democrats and republicans are getting closer to a deal on the debt limit, they're taking baby steps. the senate may be cutting its holiday recess short, but it's unclear just how much work will get done. republicans and democrats remain

at odds over how to raise the nation's debt limit. the biggest sticking point, taxes. >> the last thing that employers need is further disincentives to not hire people. and that's what the higher taxes would mean. >> reporter: while the gop wants tax hikes off the table, democrats say they're needed to carve the $2.5 trillion out of the deficit republicans demand. democrats are calling for so-called revenue raisers. they include ending tax breaks for oil companies, and corporations that send jobs overseas. democrats are also calling for the elimination of subsidies for corporate jet owners. congress has about four weeks before the treasury department says the government will start to default on its bills. with time running out, and so much at stake, there's talk lawmakers could agree on a short-term deal. a smaller compromise could keep the government running for another six to eight months, and include cuts negotiators have already agreed to. >> the white house does not want to kick that can down the road,

because what they worry is that they lose leverage in a mini deal. they have to essentially agree to a trillion dollars in spending cuts, but they get none of the tax increases that they want. >> reporter: so far, the white house hasn't scheduled any new talks with gop leaders. so this morning, it's just wait and see. as of last night even democrats were still scrambling to put together a meeting today with the white house about the debt ceiling. >> all right, joel, we'll be waiting and watching. thank you, joining us live from washington. now to mexico, where the search continues this morning for seven americans missing since their boat capsized in the gulf of cortez off baja, california. an eighth victim died. officials say there is hope the missing seven could still be alive, because the gulf water is calm, and warm. sandra hughes reports. >> reporter: a u.s. coast guard helicopter joined mexico's navy monday in the search for several fishermen still missing off baja, california. one american was killed when the

"erik," a chartered fishing boat, capsized in a flash storm early sunday morning, 60 miles south of san felipe. >> passengers were in the water for over 16 hours and eventually were rescued by local fishermen, and the military. >> reporter: some of the fishermen on board the "erik" took this trip every year for the fourth of july. jan's husband rich joined this year by chance. >> apparently one of the gentlemen couldn't go, and so rich was offered a trip for free. >> reporter: the men clung to coolers, rescue rings and life vests for hours until three of them were rescued by another boat, as they tried to swim to shore. >> possibly could still be out there. >> reporter: mexican officials say the survivors were in good condition with injuries like scrapes and sunburns. they were taken to a clinic for checkup's. lee's wife said her husband called to tell her he was okay. >> he was on the side where it came up so he was flipped into water and he and some others that were close to him came up right by a raft.

>> reporter: the "erik" has been operating on the gulf of california since 1989. the owners baja sport fishing released a statement. we have been working with mexican navy authorities and the u.s. coast guard in the search and rescue. right now, our main concern is making sure that everyone is aaccounted for. according to the company's website, all trips are canceled until further notice. sandra hughes, cbs news. at the casey anthony murder trial in orlando, the jury begins its second day of deliberations this morning. anthony is accused of killing her 2-year-old daughter caylee. karen brown reports. >> reporter: the jury deciding casey anthony's fate deliberated for a half a day, and then went back to their hotel, without reaching a verdict. >> you are not permitted to discuss this case among yourselves is while you are separated from this courthouse. >> reporter: they'll be back tuesday, to wade through more than a month's worth of testimony and evidence. prosecutors wrapped up their case by showing these photos of

anthony, after her daughter was missing, partying and displaying her new tattoo. they argue anthony didn't want to be a mom anymore, so she suffocated caylee with duct tape. >> that tape had to have been on that skull before she decomposed. >> reporter: to get a guilty verdict, prosecutors must convince the jurors beyond a reasonable doubt. and the defense has offered the seven women and five men on the jury a completely different explanation of how caylee died. the defense claims caylee accidentally drowned in her grandparents' pool. >> there's the proof. that she could easily get outside. >> reporter: and that her grandfather tried to cover it up. >> these photographs tell the truth. >> reporter: but in their final rebuttal, prosecutors pounced. >> people don't make accidents look like murder. >> reporter: legal expert mark o'meara thinks jurors may have some doubts, yet still find anthony guilty. >> her story is so incredible

the way it's been told, that they don't like her, and they're not going to listen to anything her or her attorneys have to say. >> reporter: if convicted of first degree murder, anthony could face the death penalty. karen brown, cbs news, orlando, florida. in indiana the search for a missing university student may have come to a tragic end. a badly decomposed body was found in a creek about 50 miles south of bloomington. the home of indiana university. the student, lauren spierer, disappeared on june 3rd after a night of drinking. an autopsy is being performed today. in health news a new study on autism suggests the disorder may result as much from environmental factors, including conditions in the mother's womb, as from genetics. the study involved nearly 200 sets of twins. at least one of which was autistic. further research is needed to determine what factors increase the risk. another study raises new health questions about the popular anti-smoking drug chantix. it had already been linked to an increased risk of suicidal thoughts.

but now the new finding suggests a higher risk of developing heart disease. dr. jon lapook has more. >> reporter: worrisome news for the more than 7 million americans who have taken chantix. a new analysis links the pill to a 72% increase in the risk of heart problems. >> it is causing the same problems that we are trying to prevent, that's why it's not working. we need to prevent cardio disease among smokers, not increase. >> reporter: the rebuke combines 14 studies involving more than 8,000 patients. while a 72% increased risk sounds alarming, the companion editorial titles, is it a heartbreaker? notes that cardiovascular problems including chest pain, heart attack and stroke are still rare. occurring in only about 1% of patients taking chantix. the drugmaker pfizer questions the way the analysis was conducted. dr. gail caldwell is vice president of medical affairs for pfizer. >> we will continue to do a more in-depth look as the fda is asking us to do but to date we

the last four shuttle astronauts are at the kennedy space center in florida this morning. they flew from houston to florida yesterday in nasa jets. if all goes as planned the crew, three men and one woman, will take shuttle "atlantis" on its final flight friday. closing out nasa's 30-year space shuttle program. dominique strauss-kahn could be hit with a new sexual assault charge. this time in france. dsk, as he's known to many, may soon see prosecutors drop rape charges against him in new york. but now a french writer says he tried to rape her during an interview back in 2002. the former head of the imf denies the allegation and says he plans to file a slander charge against her. in syria, there are reports this morning of hundreds of government troops entering the town killing at least three people. this video which was posted on the internet shows an anti-government protester, or several of them, in fact, in hamas on sunday night.

on the "cbs moneywatch," stocks were mixed on asian markets today. ashley morrison is here in new york with the latest on that. good morning, ashley. >> and good morning to you, betty. yes, it was a narrowly mixed day for the asian markets. tokyo's nikkei was up a fraction while hong kong's hang seng fell slightly. wall street will be paying close attention to the june unemployment numbers due out on friday. stocks opened this morning after finishing higher on friday. the dow gained 168 points, while the nasdaq was up 42. this is the fifth day the minnesota government has been shut down due to government budget issues. talks broke down on thursday. republicans want to limit state spending to $34 billion. democratic governor mark dayton wants to raise income taxes on the state's top earners. detroit's big three automakers and the united auto workers union have kicked off a new contract this month. the current national uaw contract expires september 14th. labor costs have been dramatically cut in recent years, and the uaw rank and file

are talking tough about winning back concessions. microsoft has struck a deal to provide english language internet searches in china. microsoft will team with china's largest chinese language search engine. a year and a half ago, google pulled out of china, partly over censorship concerns. china has the world's largest population of internet users, more than 450 million people. and, betty, a hard-to-imagine treasure trove in southern india. the valuables were stored at secret vaults in a 16th century hindu temple with very little security for 150 years. and inventory was finally taken. there are stacks of gold statues studded with diamonds, rubies and emeralds. the unofficial estimate puts the value at $22 billion. but they are still counting. and, betty, that is a lot of bling. >> $22 billion with a "b"?

the statue was unveiled yesterday by former secretary of state condoleezza rice, not far from the u.s. embassy. the bronze statue was commissioned for reagan's 100th birthday. president obama celebrated the fourth of july holiday with american service members at the white house. the first family hosted a barbecue for 1200 on the south lawn. the president told the troops and their families, america is proud of them. and not far from the white house last night, it was the annual independence day concert on the national mall. here are some of the sights and sounds. ♪ ♪
