in my dining room. i tried to get out but it was blocking the door and i couldn't get out so i had to climb out the side window to come back around inside the thousands see what extent the damage was. >> reporter: you were thinking you were dreaming all of this. >> i was. it is not every day you see a truck in your dining room. >> reporter: let's talk about the rest of your family. your son was cleaning up his room. your wife, talk about how close this car came to her. >> my wife was in the back living room and she had just gotten up to turn off the television on the far left side of the back living room. when this truck came crashing through the back door. and with all of the debris, when she actually came to the truck was three inches from her face. so, she was literally almost killed. she's lucky to be alive. >> unbelievable. >> it is crazy. >> reporter: she's resting in the car. you guys aren't able to get inside the house. what are they doing here?

birthday. 14,000 pounds of explosives were used for the 17-minute show. the massive pyrotechnics capped off a day of activities and follow the annual a capital 4th concert. >> police are investigating serious july 4th incidents on water ways. the washington harbor patrol pulled a man out of the potomac river about a half-mile south of memorial bridge. the man was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. doctors are trying to save a man who nearly drowned a gunnar's lake in germantown. he was playing with a toy boat on the water last night. the toy stalled and when he tried to swim out to get it, he went under. when rescuers finally pulled him out, he was unresponsive. he was last listed in critical condition. a 6-year-old boy couldn't be saved at sandy point state park in anne arundel county. he may have been underwater in an unguarded section of the beach for up to half an hour. when the boy was pulled from the waters, rescuers

administered cpr but they couldn't revive him. >> come inon, virginia says the customers still without power in arlington should get it back by 6:00 tonight at the latest. this is a live picture just outside one of the dark neighborhoods at glebe road and old dominion drive. entrances to those streets are blocked off this morning. verizon crews worked by the light of last night's fireworks display. this morning, they tell 9news, the crews can't get to some areas until vdot clears down trees. about 1600 people in northern virginia are still waiting for the lights to come back on after sunday night's storm. it is now time for the latest "your money" report of the morning. wall street gets back to work. investors will look at the latest report on how america's factories are doing. new numbers showed improvement in manufacturing. that gave wall street a pop last friday. the dow finished up 168 points to close at 12,582.

the s&p 500 up by 19 points. when it comes to living expenses, which cities are the priciest? it probably won't surprise you to learn the washington area ranked in the top ten in a new list from kiplinger magazine. some of the factors, high real estate, rising energy cost especially for gasoline and electricity. here is your top five. new york city came in at number one in the country. number two, honolulu, hawaii. number three, san francisco. san jose, california was number four. stanford, connecticut number five. as for washington, d.c., we came in as the sixth most expensive city in the country. incomes are well above average here thanks to the strong job market but the cost of living is -- rental prices are double the national average. for anybody who's tried to rent a place lately, they can tell you. >> you told us more people are renting because the mortgages are so high and just trying to

the boat and the 16 crew members were rescued yesterday. the missing tourists could survive in the warm gulf of california. the problems are not over for dominique strauss-kahn. today, a french author is expected to file a criminal complaint accusing the former international monetary fund director of attempted rape. the rape case against strauss- kahn in new york is weakening because questions have emerged about his accuser's credibility. here is a way to celebrate july 4th. go skiing! and we mean snow skiing! a record breaking season for snowfall left utah's snowbird ski resort with enough powder to open on independence day even though temperatures reached the 70s. the resort stayed open 202 days this season beating the old record by one day. probably a little icy but they're still going to take it. >> then when they get back down, it is 70 degrees. not bad. the u.s. senate is ending

hour or less now. we're getting a later sunrise since we've crossed the solstice a couple of weeks ago. day planner calling for sunshine. unlike yesterday, cloudy all day. by 1:00, upper 80s. by 3:00, around 90. this afternoon with the heat, we may pop one or two showers here or there. the coverage will be fairly sparse. most of us stay dry today. it won't be the case tomorrow into thursday as some of the moisture returns with the frontal boundary. look at the dry air up to our north. dew points have dropped into the mid-50s. even into the 40s. unfortunately, our dew points are still in the 60s. the muggies are really close. this is tough to get rid of this time of year. down with the higher dew points, we're still dealing with light showers this morning. quickly racing away from areas in southern maryland where a couple of sprinkles around leonardtown. even down in the northern neck,

route 360 here. other than light sprinkles, that's it from the overnight showers. temperatures where the air is a little bit drier and the skies have cleared some. the low to mid-60s. we're still in the low to middle 70s with 75 degrees now at reagan national under mostly cloudy skies. winds, drier direction. north-northwest at 7. that will turn southerly. dew point at 65. want to show you this frontal boundary. this things gets close to us late tomorrow into thursday. with this coming toward us. another boundary off to the south. getting a little squeeze play tomorrow into thursday. while we've got the slight chance, real slight chance of a storm this afternoon and there you see them popping up, it looks like tomorrow afternoon, we'll have a better chance to pop a couple of showers and storms and again on thursday as well. looking ahead toward the next three days, today, we've got forecast high 91 degrees with the isolated storm out there. wednesday, some storms in the

afternoon. better chance d.c. points south as opposed to north. thursday, scattered thunderstorms. as we head toward friday, storms in the upper 80s. we start to dry out for the weekend. slight chance of a storm. i think hotter sunday and monday. storm chances off as temperatures rise from the lower and possible middle 90s. let's get a look out at the traffic. there's no construction out there. >> that is good news. >> construction has been delayed because of the holiday. that's good news especially if you're travelling in virginia on the beltway. no need to worry this morning. in the meantime, we do have a problem in arlington where there have been downed wires overnight. we'll take a look live where authorities are on the scene and they've blocked off basically old dominion drive between north glebe and williamsburg boulevard. it isn't too tough to get around it. take rock spring road back on to old dominion. we'll keep you posted on this situation. on the beltway, we'll zoom into

a couple of showers overnight quickly pulling away from the region. by 9:00, temperatures should be around 80 degrees. we'll warm up quickly. like to exercise outdoors, do it this morning. going to be a hot, humid afternoon. 86 by noon. 90 by 3:00. notice the little specks of green. isolated storms here and there. that will be the case with the 6:00 temperature. upper 80s to around 90. over to you. if you're headed to nationals park tonight, look for first lady michelle obama. she's going to the game to help recognize military families. >> she'll take part in pregame ceremonies and tribute during the third inning. here's brett haber with the rest of your morning sports. >> good morning, everybody. here's how you know the nationals offense has some issues. their go-to guy in the tenth inning was a 270 pound pitcher. if you think that's funny, what's even funnier is he

right now. let's go over to the trains, everything is running on time on metro, vre and marc. this one heads up on the foggy bottom station, the escalators are out. jessica, andrea? >> this morning, hundreds of people in arlington are still wait for the lights to come back on. >> they lost power in sunday night's round of thunderstorms. the storms knocked out a lot of trees and power lines in north arlington. you're looking at live pictures of one of the neighborhoods along glebe road and old dominion drive. dominion power tells us the workers are waiting on crews from vdot. they have to wait for the trees to be cleared before they can get the power back on. they hope to have everyone back on by this afternoon. >> montgomery county police have arrested a driver after an suf crashed into a home. it happened very early this morning in aspen hill. 9news now reporter surae chinn

joins us live from the scene with more. good morning. >> good morning, andrea. festivities on the 4 july may have been a little too much for one driver. police say someone, a woman, who was under the influence of alcohol came speeding down this road right through the backyard of the avery home into the back door, into the living room. and that's where three people were inside of the home and also a woman was just turning off the tv at the moment when the car came crashing into this living room, just three inches from her face. right now, folks are shoring up this home. it is not inhabitable right now. they're trying to make sure the ceiling does not cave into the home but right now, a major disaster here. the family is on the scene. we talked to them in the last half hour. here's what the father had to say.

>> the suv was in the back living room. and my wife had just gotten up to turn off the television when the suv drove through the living room where she was sitting. i think some of the debris hit her. i think she told me she blacked out a little bit. the truck was three inches from where she was sitting. >> this close to her face. she's lucky to be alive. >> reporter: lucky to be alive is keith avery speaking this morning. an unbelievable story and yes, everyone is ok. the wife just a little bit injured. very shaken this morning. but right now, you can see folks shoring up the home. it will be quite awhile before they clean up. also, we want to note the woman was taken into custody who was behind the wheel. >> thank you, surae chinn, reporting live. a man attending the salem fair in southwest virginia could be liable for damages after a roller coaster accident. six people were hospitalized after two cars on the riptide

coaster collided. the fair's safety consultant is blaming an unrhuli passenger. officials say the man was told it remove his hat before boarding. once on the ride, he put the hat back on. it blew off and got jammed into the wheel of one of the cars. virginia lawmakers passed a rider safety act in 2002. it allows riders to be held financially responsible for any accident that happens when they fail to follow written and verbal instructions. there is a little good news for drivers fearing what the opening of the mark center will do to traffic. the defense department has reassured them that 6400 workers aren't showing up at their new offices in alexandria by september 15th. that's according to today's "washington examiner." only a third of the workers will be there by that date which should reduce the immediate effect on commuters. area lawmakers have been pushing the pentagon for a delay until road improvements can be made around the country. time now, 5:35. time for another "your money"

report. after their holiday break, the u.s. senate heads back to work this afternoon. now, that's earlier than originally scheduled. senators can try to reach an agreement on raising the nation's debt ceiling. joel brown reports. >> reporter: the senate may be cutting its holiday recess short but it is unclear just how much work will get done. republicans and democrats remain at odds over how to raise the nation's debt limit. the biggest sticking point, taxes. >> the last thing that employers need is further disincentives to not hire people and that's what the higher taxes would mean. >> while the g.o.p. wants tax hikes off the table, democrats say they're needed to carve the $2.5 trillion out of the deficit republicans demand. >> democrats are calling for so- called revenue raisers including ending tax breaks for oil companies and corporations that send jobs overseas. democrats are also calling for the elimination of subsidies for corporate jet owners.

congress has about four weeks before the treasury department says the government will start to default on its bills. with time running out and so much at stake, there's talk lawmakers could agree on a short-term deal. a smaller compromise could keep the government running for another six to eight months and includes cuts negotiators have already agreed to. >> the white house does not want to kick that can down the road because what they worry is they lose leverage in a mini deal. they have to agree to a trillion dollars in spending cuts. they get none of the tax increases they want. >> so far, the white house hasn't scheduled any new talks with g.o.p. leaders. joel brown, cbs news, washington. the government technically hit the debt ceiling in may but some creative accounting extended the deadline until august 2nd. for an economical and ecofriendly way to cut the grass, one montgomery county city is turning to goats. that story is coming up. >> plus, the crew of the final mission of the space shuttle program is now at the launch

been assassinated. the cable news network says a hacker is to blame for a series of tweets yesterday reporting the president had been shot and killed in iowa. in a statement released on its web site, fox news calls the tweets ma leashes and false and -- malicious and false and says the hacking incident is being investigated. vice president joe biden is exercising his freedom of speech. he sent his first ever tweet on the 4th of july. mr. biden and his wife, jill, asked americans to take time to think of the troops in battle. it is part of the white house's growing battle on social media. his user name is at dc. >> you may spot a mowing crew along muddy branch crew. why is this newsworthy? they won't have any of the usual equipment. take a look on your screen because the city is using goats to eat up some of the grasses and plants near the isaac walton building. the goats will be out there for about two weeks and inside of

good morning and welcome back to 9news now. 5:46 on this tuesday morning. it is a little bit more bearable. out last night watching fireworks, people were still talking about the storms that devastated parts of arlington and alexandria. >> also loudoun county, viewer sent me some pictures. had about 20 trees knocked down. big trees. sunday afternoon and sunday evening. >> more storms today? >> isolated chance. i don't think today's storms will bother that many people but then the storm threat will be a little bit more tomorrow, thursday and friday. it is july. we're into this pattern. we're up around the 90 degree mark. we get any sort of trick or trigger, that will help. we won't have much in the way
