hello, i'm andrea roane in for j.c. hayward. president obama will meet with lawmakers tomorrow to try to get a deal on raising the national debt limit. but right now, neither side appears ready to compromise on the major sticking points. danielle nottingham reports from the white house.

>> reporter: leaders from both political parties insist they're ready to talk about the debt. >> i think the best way for us to reach a deal is for both sides to quit bashing each other and let's sit down, let's have a real proposal before us, let's hash it out. >> what bob corker just said ought to be the beginning of our conversation at the white house. that's exactly the attitude we need on both sides. >> reporter: the president has summoned congressional leaders to the white house thursday and says everyone should leave their ultimatums at the door. >> this will require both parties to get out of our comfort zones and both parties to agree on real compromise. but so far, both sides are sticking to their positions. republicans want any debt limit increase to include $2.4 trillion in spending cuts. democrats agree with some of those cuts but they also want to end some tax breaks for corporations and wealthy americans which the g.o.p. opposes. >> the white house has dismissed the idea of a short-

term deal. one that would prevent the country from hitting the debt limit until next year. the president says he wants a long-term solution. >> i don't think the american people here -- sent us here to avoid tough problems. in fact, what drives them nuts about washington. >> reporter: lawmakers need to have an agreement by july 22nd in order to get it passed by the beginning of august. if that doesn't happen, the u.s. could default on its loans for the first time in history. danielle nottingham, cbs news, washington. senators were supposed to be on vacation this week but canceled their time off after president obama urged them to stay in washington. prince george's county council quickly stripped council member leslie johnson's privileges after she tenderedder are his ignore nation tuesday. >> -- her resignation tuesday. >> included but not limited to the use of a county car, cell phone usage, grant expenditures

and discretionary funding. >> johnson's last day on the job will be july 31st. last thursday, she pled guilty to obstruction of justice charges. she will be stepsed in october. county executive rushern baker had this reaction... maryland congressman roscoe bartlett said he's running for re-election. the 85-year-old says he hopes to fix the economy by cutting spending and reducing taxes. bartlett is a republican in his 10th term. he represents maryland's sixth district. that district includes western maryland, frederick and carroll counties and the northern

baltimore suburbs. read more about the primary challenge congressman bartlett is facing by going to wusa9.com. the story is in our where you live section on the frederick county page. right now, the family of a laurel, maryland, woman is coming to grips with her murder. investigators in macon, georgia, says a dismembered body found near an apartment is 27-year-old laura griding. right now, a person of interest is in custody. however, police have not yet charged steven mcdaniels with murder. giddings just graduated from law school and was studying to take her bar exam. many across the country are in disbelief over the not guilty verdict in the casey anthony trial. the jury determined she did not kill her 2-year-old daughter. tomorrow, they'll sentence her for lying to police. karen brown has the latest from orlando, florida. >> reporter: casey anthony could walk free within 24 hours. >> we the jury find the defendant not guilty. >> a jury of seven women and

five men cleared her of murder. while the panel decided not to explain their decision, an alternate juror believed it was some sort of horrific accident. >> they didn't prove there was a murder. >> heckler was juror number 14. he said after more than a month of testimony, the prosecution did not prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt. >> they didn't show us how caylee died. that was important. no one could answer that. >> anthony was convicted for lying to police. she's been in jail for nearly three years so many experts think the judge will set her free tomorrow for time served. >> had she just been tried on those four cases, she would have never gotten four years in jail. >> the prosecution admits it is disappointed and so are many of the trial watchers from all around the country. the verdict sparked strong emotions. >> she can run but she can't hide. god will get her.

>> that little girl needs justice. somebody murdered that child. >> the defense claimed casey anthony's father staged a cover- up after caylee accidentally drown in the family's swimming pool. casey's parents left the courtroom right after the verdict. in a written statement, they called their daughter's defense strategy baseless but said the jury's decision was fair based on the evidence. karen brown, cbs news, orlando, florida. an attorney for casey anthony's parent says george and cindy have received death threats since the verdict came in. they've asked the public for privacy. a northern virginia mother charged with killing her son is expected to surrender to officials later today. a prince william county grand jury indicted karen murphy. authorities say she left her son in the family's sweltering minivan for more than seven hours last month. he died. this is not the first time she had forgotten the boy. court documents show in january, she left him in the van for 20 minutes. records also show she wasn't

aware of the mistake until the child's day care called to say he was absent. d.c. police have made a second arrest in the deadly shooting during last month's caribbean parade. deonte jay bryant of northwest d.c. is charged. officers picked him up yesterday. terry allen jimenez is also charged. he was arrested days after the june 25th shooting which killed innocent bystander 43-year-old robert foster jr. three others were also shot but they survived. weather could delay the final shuttle mission scheduled for this friday. it will last 12 days and will deliver supplies to the international space station. as surae chinn tells us, the goddard's spaceflight center will have a crucial role in the final mission. >> three, two, one. >> i do a go, no go status of the network nine minutes before launch. >> jim will be overseeing communication of shuttle "atlantis" from greenbelt, maryland at the goddard

spaceflight center. >> without our communications, they would not be able to speak to the astronauts, they would not be able to launch. >> pass along our congratulations. >> reporter: it is imaging and sounds like these that baumgartner is responsible for. goddard is the lifeline. they have made it possible for all communication, data and astronauts speaking with the johnson space center throughout the shuttle program. goddard is also hitching a ride on atlantis putting its robotic refueling mission payload. >> just this whole cubicle. >> essentially, a big hardware box, the size of a washing machine that will fly on the shuttle and dock on the international space station. its purpose is to service future satellites. >> starting on friday, i will have my team in here so i will be pinning my team 55 minutes into the flight, does everything look good? >> all eyes are on the final mission with goddard and a special role. >> i think i can't believe this is the final space shuttle mission. it is emotional to think this

billionaire tried to rape her in 2003. people across britain are shocked and outraged over the widening phone hacking scandal. a newspaper is accused of hacking into the phones of missing children and terror attack victims. as charlie d'agata reports, lawmakers are now getting involved. >> reporter: a british tabloid may have hacked into the phones of a missing 13-year-old girl and suicide bombing family. investigators are looking into whether journalists at rupert murdoch's news of the world listen into desperate conversations families had with police after the 2005 london attacks. the tabloid also allegedly tapped into the account of missing 13-year-old millie dollar, not only listening to her voice mail but deleting messages from frantic relatives. the activity on the phone gave her family hope she was still alive. she was found dead six months after she disappeared in 2002. >> this is disgusting,

complicatingerts to clean up an oil spill in the yellowstone river. federal officials say it took exxon mobil nearly twice as long to seal the pipeline as they publicly reported. teps of gallons of crude oil that seeped into the water way in montana. exxon mobil is promising to do whatever is necessary to clean up the mess. the crowds have come back to ocean city, maryland. "the baltimore sun" reports ocean city tourism officials estimate more than 330,000 people came to the shore over the 4th of july weekend. it is estimated that the crowd grew to more than 354,000 people on independence day. many of the shops that cater to tourists say business was brisk over the weekend. the mascot of a rockville restaurant resembled a chicken with its head cut off because the mascot is a chicken and its head was missing. last week, someone stole the head off the custom made chicken costume in front of

the kickin' chicken. he returned it and even wrote a letter saying he was sorry. >> he apologized. we think that's really nice because he wrote a letter. you can see the letter outside. >> the restaurant has posted the apology letter on its window right alongside the mr. chicken head and all. an unusual block party is taking place this saturday in the district. there will be the usual games, music and food but at this party, you can get free medical screenings for diabetes, prostate cancer and strokes. the party takes place at the 19th street baptist church on 16th street northwest. the hours are 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and howard is off but anny hong is in and she has a sticky summer forecast for us. >> you can really feel the heavy air out there because of the humidity and the dew points. >> it doesn't smell great. >> it doesn't. we're getting showers and storms. nothing severe. we can use the rain because the lawns are pretty parched out there. not a whole lot though,

rainfall amount. we'll take what we can get. we do see more showers and storms in the forecast though. here is a look at your day planner form the rest of your wednesday. by 3:00, scattered showers, thunderstorms possible. temperatures in the low 90s. temperatures cooling down into the 83 degree mark. here is a look at doppler radar where we've got a couple of lightning storms mainly to the south and the d.c. area. but nothing really severe for the most beltway area, we did see some light rain go through. not even a quarter of an inch amounting from these storms. here is a look at the doppler radar. basically south of d.c., where we're seeing light rain, north beach out toward the bay. just south of la plata and mechanicsville and riverside. light stuff because we see the green. we don't see any yellow. you head farther south, we see more heavier amounts of rain, maybe even some storms. right here in leonardtown, up to two inches of rainfall in

the center of the system, north of newland. just south of lesby, a storm cell there. we're not expecting severe weather. currently, temperatures in the lower 80s in downtown. 75 in manassas. 82 in leesburg. 86 in winchester. the clouds are keeping the temperatures down for now. dew points, yeah, you feel it in the lower 70s. 72 manassas. 75 in culpepper. so that humid air will stick around through tonight. that means it will be very warm if not mild overnight. partly to mostly cloudy conditions for the rest of today. i think this afternoon, get a little clearing possible. scattered storms stick around this afternoon and early evening. humidity still increasing throughout the day today and the storm chances remain with us all week. but the weekend, not looking too bad. here is a look at the future cast. i think the clouds will start to pull out late this afternoon so we'll get some clearing and again, scattered showers,

thunderstorms possible around 40% or so. tonight, should be fairly quiet again. not going to be widespread. and the threat for severe weather, very, very minimal. but it is a slight possibility we can maybe have an isolated, severe storm go through but for the most part, it really should be more of a rainmaker and some heavier amounts of local downpours. highs today around low 90s for downtown. manassas 92, fredericksburg, 88 degrees. overnight, pretty warm. mid-70s around downtown. 70 in manassas. 68 degrees for winchester. it still will feel humid. the next three days, tomorrow, very similar. a little better chance of some scattered showers and thunderstorms. i'll call it around 50% then friday, 50% to 60% chance. that's the best chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms. temperaturewise, still in the upper 80s through the weekend. on sunday, we're looking storm- free. 91 degrees. monday and tuesday, we get a burst of heat coming this way. mid to upper 90s by tuesday.
