for your morning commute. >> it was absolutely devastating. plus, the robert juan case. years later, his killers remain at large but tonight, they're talking about a new civil settlement. >> why would a mother kill her son and take her own l? it is a question tonight as police investigate a murder-suicide in kensington. ken, what new information are they sharing with you tonight? >> reporter: some folks have set up an informal memorial in front of the house, of course the scene of this tragic murder-suicide. we know the mother was prominent psychologist dr. marth ret jensold and her son benjamin. dr. gensold killed her son and turned it on herself. >> it's awful to have happen for whatever purpose. >> reporter: dr. margaret

jensold was a prominent psychologist and author a book. an autopsy report by the chief medical examiner's office has ruled her death a suicide and her son's a homicide, both killed by a gun shot. >> they stayed pretty much away from most of the people in the neighborhood. >> reporter: the deadly fight was made on tuesday after a coworker of dr. jensold told authorities she hadn't heard from her. they koemd through the scene of this murders-suicide all day, looking for clues on the exterior of the house. let me show you what investigators were looking at. take a look. that appears to be the exit hole of a bullet. interestingly enough, we found another similar-sized hole on the side of another house across the way. she was a divorced single mother living with her 13-year-old son benjamin. records uncovered by 9news now reveal she had battles over child support, spousal support

and alleged abuse between 2006 and 2008. >> i don't think they were angry. they just didn't seem to participate. >> reporter: a statement released by the 13-year-old's father and her ex-husband, he said in part, quote, i love my son and ex-wife and i was proud of both of them. my son was a successful graduate on wellspring academy. she lost 160 pounds in the last year due to his hard work and determination. i do not understand this tragedy and i do not know why this has happened. that is still the big question tonight, what drove this mother to kill her son allegedly and then turn that gun on herself. we're live tonight, ken molestina, 9news now. an update on the sex abuse case connected to the dc summer jobs program. the man accused of sexually molesting a 17-year-old during the district summer job's program not only never had a background check, he was in a position that required the city to give him one.

according to documents obtained by 9news, 54-year-old thomas nelson was one of the program supervisors. people who apply for that job have to pass a background check. when we first covered this story, we were told that nelson wasn't a supervisor and had limited contact with the young people. >> he actually was not the supervisor of record of the individual so he is not a supervisor. all supervisors are required to have a background check, which the metropolitan police department conducts. >> reporter: as it turns out, that was not the case. he pleads guilty to attempted second degree case of child abuse of a minor. we reached out to mayor vince gray's office for comment. they have yet to get back to us. a lawyer stabbed to death years ago in a dupont circle home and tonight, a major development in a high-profile dc murder case. >> the criminal investigation continues into the murder of robert juan. however, a settlement has been

reached in the civil case. >> reporter: katherine waun says five years after life was ripped out. >> it was devastating. >> reporter: she's very much at peace. >> it's been a good day. >> reporter: it was august 2, 2006, after a late night at work, robert came to sleep at a friend's house on swan street. instead of driving back to his house in northern virginia. tragically, he would never return home. that's because shortly after arriving at his friend's town house, robert was stabbed to death. >> a little after midnight, i get a call from joe telling me that robert has been stabbed in the back. >> reporter: so far, nobody has been charged with the murder, but robert's widow is convinced that the three men who lived here, her husband's college friend joseph price and two men price was involved in romantically had something, if not a lot, to do with the murder. >> i do believe that the three men were involved in killing robert. >> reporter: about a year ago, all three men were found not

guilty after being charged with obstruction of justice and tampering with evidence at the crime scene. >> i have not had any contact with them. >> reporter: today, the three men agreed to settle the $20 million wrongful death lawsuit that katherine filed against them. >> i agonized a lot. >> reporter: now, 40 years old, she said settling the lawsuit was an important step forward, as she continues piecing her life back together without a beloved husband, who's gone from the world, but still very much with her. >> instead of a painful memory now, he's very much -- almost like a northern star. >> reporter: according to the terms of today's settlement, the three defendants have agreed to give money to his memorial trust, which benefits several of his favorite charities and causes. the exact dollar amount of the settlement has not been announced. >> thank you, matt. this just in, a tour bus carrying more than two dozen passengers has overturned in upstate new york. broom county sheriffs say four

people were seriously hurt and 36 others suffered minor injuries. that accident happened along interstate 81 near whitney point. no word yet on what caused the crash. it is our job as journalists to tell you when crimes are committed and arrests made, but tonight, a massive network of child abuse and pornography, leaves us at a loss for words. attorney eric holder put it this way today. >> for the children they victimized, this was nothing short of a nightmare. >> tonight, 72 people have been charged with taking part in the international child porn ring, and two of them are from maryland and virginia. investigators at the department of justice say the suspects all belong to an online group called dream board. the website allowed members to trade images of sexual abuse over the web and as part of the rules, the victims had to be younger than 12 years old, and participants were required to continually upload images of child sex abuse to maintain

their membership. >> some of the children featured in these images and videos were just infants, and in many cases the children being victimized were in obvious and intentional pain, even in distress and crying, just as the rules for one area of the bulletin board mandated. >> investigators say participants who molested children and created new images were placed in a super vip category that gave them access to everything on the bulletin board. police have arrested 52 people and are looking up to 500 more who may be involved. only on 9, the man who jumped the fence at the white house explains why he did it. the white house was put on loch down nearly two hours after james crudup climbed the fence last night. the 41-year-old told 9news that the move was a cry for help because he can't find a job in this economy. he said he also had partial hopes of being shot by police because he cannot provide for his children.

>> who wouldn't want to die, but if it it would be made easier, but then you think about the loved ones you leave behind. i have six beautiful kids, and any parent, any real man would want to provide for their children, and in today's economy, it is so hard. >> he has been charged with unlawful entry and expected to be back in court on august 23. tonight, a mother is desperately seeking answers after her son drowned at a pool party over the weekend. >> he was an extraordinary young man, and very ambitious. >> around 1:30 sunday morning, paramedics responded to a drowning call at the broad water mansion in upper marlborough but the off-duty officers working security turned them away. his body was not found until

nearly two hours later, and that leaves his mom wanting to know how it all went wrong. >> why did it take the ems so long, why were there no life guards. they say the water was murky. who was swimming in a dirty swimming pool? that was the question i have. >> police say 200 to 300 people had bought tickets to that pool party and there were no lifeguards on duty. according to the health department, there were so many people there that the pool was public and, therefore, subject to safety regulations. our calls to the owner of the mansion, the former state senator tommy broadwater jr. have never been returned. one of the giants of the national football league who also turned out to be a pretty funny guy has passed away. charles bubby smith was found dead in his california home today. and police say his death does not appear to have been suspicious. he spent five seasons with the baltimore colts and two seasons with oakland and houston in the

'60s and '70s, and after that, smith, who was about 6' 7, 265 became known to a whole new generation playing a cop in the police academy movies and was featured in a breaking ground lite beer for miller ads. to texas, where warren jeff gave a delayed statement about religious prosecution today. he's accused of sexual assaulting two girls in the sect, ages 12 and 15. casey anthony will not have to go back to orlando florida tomorrow. she was supposed to start serving probation for check fraud after getting out of jail. the original judge who ordered anthony back to florida stepped down from the case today and isn't saying why. anthony stayed completely out of the public eye since he was acquitted in the death of her daughter, caylee. finally, in oklahoma, they set a new heat record for july.

their average temperature, 89 degrees for the month when it's normally 81. that's right, 89 and 81. the heat has been blamed for at least 10 deaths in the state so far, and this could be the hottest yet in oklahoma, up to 110 degrees if not hotter. >> oklahoma and texas are threatening records set back in 1980. we kind of have a muggy night. here's your wake-up weather. add a sprinkle or shower at 7:00 and 8:00. temperatures in the 70s to start and 76 to 80 by mid-morning. we'll talk about emily when we come back . still ahead tonight. >> i feel completely betrayed. thousands of faa workers left without pay due to a budget debate. a local woman's frustrations boil over as she speaks about being left in limbo by the government, coming up.

projects all over the country. gary neurenberg reports, hundreds of those federal furloughs are right here in dc. >> reporter: gender ex blood hounds can find just about anything in waldorf but her pay check. >> i am the major wage earner in my family and i am going to go without a check for probably eight weeks. >> reporter: she's a senior systems engineer at the faa working until she was furloughed on making crowded airports and air space safer. >> the system i'm working on is supposed to deliver decision-support tools to the ground controllers so they can maximize the efficiency and the capacity of the airports in our country. >> reporter: this is one of several hundred faa workers caught in a fight over labor rights and attempts to cut subsidies to rural airports. >> someone has to say no wasteful spending and no to subsidies of 3,700 per ticket.

>> reporter: that means airlines cannot collect federal aviation tickets which funds 70,000 workers at airport projects nagz wide, like radar improvement at bwi, and furlough workers can't okay future projects. >> it's pushing the envelope for when we get the construction next season. >> reporter: some safety instructors are working without pay infeweriating the transportation secretary who begged congress to fix it. >> come back to washington, leave your vacations. >> i feel completely betrayed that congress felt that they could leave the hill and go on their summer vacation. >> reporter: that failure to collect aviation taxes is costly. >> it has already cost us $360 million. >> this is a lose-lose-lose situation. >> reporter: the president said a temporary fix could come using congressional procedures, even if members are out of town, if that is, there is an agreement. >> reporter: nothing has ever been accomplished in this country since the declaration of independence was negotiated and

signed that didn't involve compromise and discussion, and somehow our current leaders have forgotten that. >> reporter: unless something happens and there is no sign tonight that something is about to happen, this could last until after labor day, all those people out of work and about $1.2 billion in lost revenues between now and then, anitta. we have a health alert tonight for women who are pregnant right now or plan to be in the future. make sure your prenatal victim contains omega 3 fatty acid or dha. not only does it help with brain development in the fetus, it may protect the baby after birth. a study just out looked at 800 infants and found those whose moms who took the dha had fewer colds, fevers and coughs in the first six months of life. >> it seems to be important for immune system at this point also. >> there are dha supplements on the market but another great source is sea food. look for fish high in fatty acides and low in mercury.

salmon is one of the best choices for moms. and it is very tasty for older folks as well. >> exactly . >> let's talk about this weather situation, because finally, a break, right? >> we broke the record -- not the record but broke the streak of 16 consecutive days of 90 or higher. if it makes you feel better, dallas has had several days in a row of 100 or higher. an early morning shower, a little bit of a dense fog. not a huge problem but i would check in with mr. bernstein tomorrow morning. showers down to the south and east. nothing heavy, heavier activity toward baltimore and i-83. we'll zoom up to the friends in pennsylvania. these showers north, we'll drift southward over the border tonight and could affect some of the northern commuters if you're coming down to 70 tomorrow morning, that's where the showers could end up and a

couple of showers in the next hour across martinsburg and north of fredericksburg. nothing heavy but pesky activity through the early morning hours. this is tropical storm emily, about 135 miles southeast of porrt-au-prince. the winds are still 50 miles per hour so not a huge storm. here's the deal. it's going to continue to move northwest ward and go across haiti and the eastern tip of cuba. still it's a tropical storm. in fact, by tomorrow morning, winds are only 45 miles per hour. now, we get into friday and saturday, begin to turn a little bit more to the north, which is good. that will keep it away from the coast, and we get into friday, 8:00, 50 miles per hour winds south of nasaw. when it advances, each time it gets a little closer to the coast and should slingshot back to sea. again, this is just tracks in

the national hurricane center would be some rip currents and big waves on the southeast coasts. if it does become a hurricane, category 1 by sunday, stays a category 1 and passes by bermuda. we'll keep you posted. download the hurricane tracker and track it with us. fogs and clouds early, maybe a sprinkle. not hot thursday or friday. we may start a new streak of days under 90. wouldn't that be nice. a chance of thunderstorms return friday, in the afternoon and evening. overnight, we've added fog, kept the slight chance of a shower in, clouds of linger, muggy to, lows between 70 and 75. next day, early morning shower and fog, by afternoon, not a bad day really. partly cloudy, almost hot. temperatures should stay south of 90. thanks to those winds out of the east at 10. next seven days. we don't make 90 tomorrow, we won't on friday. that would be nice.

good running game. the jury is still out and what happened today didn't help. starter ryan terrain injured his wrist and could be out two weeks or more. he will see a hand specialist tomorrow. meanwhile, the redskins still have no punter in camp. veteran sav rocka has been held up by visa problems in native australia, prompting this from mike shanahan. >> if you know anybody in the visa department that could help us, i'd really appreciate it. anybody with any connections, we need some help right now. eventually, they'll let him go. if not, i told him to get married to an american. >> meanwhile, the signings continue, free agents, mcintosh and goldstein, all re-up with the team. the skins are announcing they'll have two, not one, but two open practices tomorrow in ashburn, 8:30 and 4:30, come on out.

the nats have played over 1,000 innings this season but none will be more meaningful this sunday in hagerstown, when stephen strasburg will make his minor league rehab start just 50 weeks after that surgery. the big club, playing the braves -- that's not the braves and the nationals. that's very much like redskins training camp. the point being, he pitched for the nationals today and if the lord is on my side we'll roll those highlights -- we'll probably roll those highlights even if the lord isn't on my side. in any event, the nats lost to the braves and to the orioles highlight now. this is going well. o's in kansas city. one-run game into the seventh until billy butler makes it a one-run game no longer. a bomber off guthry. the o's fall 6-2. day 4 at the leg mason, in between raindrops, another american knocks off another

seeded player. tonight, it was donald young, split the first two sets with the man from austria and he had to retire with a quad injury. hopefully once the schedule comes out, it will be blake and isner tomorrow. before charlie davies was ever a player for dc united, washington almost killed him. 22 months ago, davies was here playing for the us national team when a car in which he was a passenger was involved in a horrible wreck. the car, as you may recall, literally was split in half on the gw parkway. another passenger in that car was killed. davies suffered a variety of injuries that nearly took his life, but they didn't, and today for the first time since the accident, he made an emotional visit to the washington hospital center and met with the doctors and nurses who saved his life. >> for me, it's more of a happy feeling to come here and see the people that actually were in the trenches, you know, they saved my life, and they got me back to playing soccer, and they gave me hope.

>> if you're into the irony of all of this, when the accident happened, charlie davies wasn't a player here. he was playing in europe and was only visiting as part of the us national team. a trade occurred, and now he's making his home and doing his work in the city where he almost died. there's something a little spooky and a little full circle about that. >> great story. >> we'll be right back. ♪
