6:05 pm
plus a gold medal. john: djokovic tightening up just a bit there. he can sense that he didn't get that double break, a real chance for nadal to find his chance for nadal to find his way back in here. dick: amazing depth, djokovic again. john: when he misses, he misses by about an inch. dick: cbs sports' coverage of the u.s. open is brought to you in 3-d by panasonic wherever available. i was dreaming in 3-d last night that this would be one of the classic matches.
6:06 pm
djokovic trying to make it all his show. john: that's a good idea for him to let that ball bounce. nadal not doing enough again. the ball's just coming up too short. that's going to take some pressure off of djokovic. he's pushing nadal around most he's pushing nadal around most of these rallies. mary: he missed it. and he's explaining why. in serbian.
6:07 pm
john: a lot of players now go right back up the middle. the opponents are picking up on that. off the overhead. as djokovic tried to do twice there. it's a risky play. it's pretty easy to find an it's pretty easy to find an angle coming close to the net. john: that's too short again. just not getting any depth at all. every rally, you cena dal talking to his camp up there. dick: djokovic halfway to the service line to hit that backhand winner. mary: he's gained control of this court. he's managing it so much better
6:08 pm
and pushing nadal back time and again. john: he gets some depth, he can get back in this. mary: even when djokovic gets shoved back behind the baseline, he finds his way back. it's automatic with him. dick: even though he's made twice the number of unforced errors than nadal, 20-10, owns a break lead here in the a break lead here in the second.
6:09 pm
john: you see that he can push djokovic back a bit, though, and get on the offensive. he's in way better shape. he didn't go for too much, but he made him hit a tough volley. djokovic didn't really get himself in good position. the racket wasn't prepared early enough. dick: a break point for nadal to get even in the second set. a big, big point for the spaniard. spaniard. he's got it! john: this is where djokovic is thinking a bit like i should have been up 5-2. had the double break. and all of a sudden we've got ourselves a match here again at
6:10 pm
4-4. dick: rafa nadal has the crowd riled up. noise just thundering down on noise just thundering down on this blue rectangle. john: that's definitely going to be challenged by that dasm he's not going to buy into what djokovic did, not calling it. this is his last challenge. if he were to lose this one -- even though it's a first point, it's a pretty big one for him. dick: chase review says it was out. john: and he's all out of challenges. got to go with the calls now.
6:11 pm
dick: the challenge also for nadal is to hold a serve after the break. the two previous times in the match where he's broken djokovic, he's lost his serve djokovic, he's lost his serve the next game. john: he went for it, all or nothing. wasn't quite there to go as big as he tried. he thought he had it. dick: huge difference. 15-15 or 0-30. 15-15 or 0-30. and here he is in trouble.
6:12 pm
dick: father sebastian. mary: he went nuts when nadal broke a couple minutes ago. dick: one of his better serves dick: one of his better serves of the match. dick: he misses that shot again. there's two more break points for djokovic. mary: it's so clearly what he should try to do, get to the backhand so he can get to that forehand, go for his winner. and he's been missing. what expensive errors at this stage of the second set. john: he's so upset with
6:13 pm
himself. missed another one. 15 times djokovic has had a chance to break serve in less than two sets. >> fault. john: we may be looking at the greatest returner in the history of our sport right now history of our sport right now the way he's playing. mary: oh boy. dick: three times he's broken djokovic and three times novak has answered breaking right has answered breaking right back.

john: an unbelievable effort by djokovic there to break right back. dick: aerial coverage of the u.s. open tennis championships provided by directv. john: how hard is it going to be for nadal now to hang in and try to win this second set? try to win this second set? very. john: he's got to get out there enough to throw a high lob. get it up higher in the air. if he's forced to go to that one-hander. one-hander. hopefully deep.
6:17 pm
john: that was right there for nadal. dick: how many times have we seen him make that running forehand up the line? john: it seems like nine out of 10. gets a whole lot harder when you're playing djokovic. but that is a bad miss there. how did he miss that? that's what he's thinking. that's what he's thinking. not even make him hit a volley. john: he knew to come in there. djokovic lucky a couple times. that ball clipped the tape, went over.
6:18 pm
guess what, it is double set guess what, it is double set point for novak. dick: number one confirming why he has been almost unbeatable this year. 63-2, beating the best. now with a two-set lead, a set away from capturing the u.s. away from capturing the u.s. open championship. to challenge ourselves on the most demanding track in the world.

dick: in the semifinals, novak djokovic dug his way out of a two-set hole and beat federer, saving two match points as well. now it's nadal with that pressure. in order to defend his title successfully, he has to win three sets against djokovic, who's playing at the height of who's playing at the height of his number one game. john: he thought it was going to go on and drop in.
6:22 pm
if he would get to a fifth set, i would like nadal's chance. he's maybe the fittest player that's ever played on the tour. the problem is getting there. even winning two sets at this stage after what's happened, the leads that he's had and blown, that bounceback to 4-4 and losing those two games and the crowd was ready to go the crowd was ready to go bananas. dick: djokovic applauding that winning shot from nadal. john: he's probably saying i'll give you a 2-0 lead, ok? dick: that's what happened both sets.

6:27 pm
himself many more chances to get to the net. dick: nadal has an easy love game to start this set, so djokovic answers with a love game of his own. djokovic has done well the entire match. whenever nadal seems to have positive results, he comes right back and answers, as has been the case in the three times nadal has broken djokovic and could not consolidate the breaks, djokovic right back to breaks, djokovic right back to take nadal's serve. john: that's an excellent volunteerley.
6:28 pm
it's a couple of them. the simple fact is his balls are coming up way too short. djokovic is attacking a lot more than nadal. this is well-handled. he saw this one coming, but that's an excellent shot. he hit it with authority, it surprised nadal. dick: 28-11. that's pretty convincing at the net. john: he just hasn't come in, nadal. there you go. it's been a problem the whole match. he's not winning enough first serves points. and look how many chances djokovic has had to break. that's a lot of pressure on that's a lot of pressure on nadal's shoulders.
