>> reporter: they have been going inch by inch to see what the damage and how much the repairs will cost. last month's 5.8 earthquake caused significant damage to the monument. there were four foot cracks and a spokesperson said mortar popped out where you could see right through to the sky. the walls are 15 inches thick, at the base and top more like 18 inches. right after the quake, engineers discovered several cracks. but it was after hurricane irene, a week later, where they found more problems, and flooding inside the monument. that is what the architect tony donald is afraid of, that there might be much more damage than we realize. >> there always could be micro fractures within the stone itself. >> it is not necessarily of immediate concern, other than it tells us we have got to do some additional patching. >> reporter: the national parks service will be holding this press conference later on today, to detail what is going on with

the landmark. we don't know how long the repairs will take and how much it will cost. andrea? jessica? >> surae, if we don't know how much it will cost or how long, do we have a possible opening date for the monument? >> reporter: folks want to know that important information. hopefully, we'll find that out later today. but what we are hearing is it could be closed for the rest of theier. it might not open for the public until 2012 andrea. >> wow. surae chinn with that update. thank you. a jury is now seated and opening statements are expected to begin tomorrow in the case against dr. conrad murray. he is the cardiologist accused of causing the death of michael jackson. the king of pop died from an overdose of a powerful anesthetic in june of 2009. murray faces up to four years in prison if he is convicted of manslaughter. jury selection begins for a

fairfax woman charged with throwing her infant granddaughter off a walk way. prosecutors contend car mel la delarosa is not insane. opening arguments could begin as early as this afternoon. union station is open again and metro's red line is back in service. firefighters were called to the train station around 6:30 sunday night for a report of an electrical panel fire. they found smoke billowing from the ventilation shaft in front of the building. metro's red line was stopped and calls for buses went out. amtrak service wasn't affected. shops and restaurants were included in the evacuation. by 8:00 last night all was back to normal and no one was hurt. a man, suffering from cardiac arrest, dies when the ambulance taking him to the hospital is struck by an suv. police say the chevrolet suburban failed to stop for the ambulance as it passed through

an intersection in hampton, virginia. the emergency vehicle flipped over during the collision. three medics and a student in the ambulance were also injured in the crash. fingers crossed, maybe we can turn things around for this week. the major averages loss between 5 and 6.5%. even the precious metals got clobbered. gold down 10% last week. silver down 25%. this comes back to fears about the health of the global economy and that also pushed crude oil lower. checking the numbers on wall street. the dow stands at 10771. the nasdaq up 27 and the s&p 500 was up almost 7 points. soaring gasoline prices could be in the rear view myrrh. the national average for regular unleaded stands at $3.51 a gallon. down from a high of almost $4 in

good morning, welcome back to 9news now on this monday morning. we were expecting to see pictures of grape stomping, howard's feet purple from the event over the weekend. but guess what interfered? >> it was so soggy on friday the folks at fox vein yards, had a camp but they couldn't set up for it. they are going to do it this saturday. 2:00 is when the grape stomping, the lucy, fred, ethel. i'm going to see if i can get out there, i have a couple of other things scheduled, so no promises there. the weather lacks good for that. we'll be in jackets saturday morning for fairfax. much colder air moving in here for the second half.

first we are sort of this this late summer pattern, even though officially it is autumn. here's your moms like me bus stop forecast. we definitely have a lot of humidity around, helping to create some drizzle and fog in spots. temperatures running in the cold spots mid-60s, but the warm spots in the low 70s this morning. and sunrise just a minute, a minute before 7:00 a.m. at can, 74, isolated sprinkle, mostly cloudy today. a passing sprinkle or two. temperatures will be in the upper 70s. any sun really, into the lower 80s. lots of clouds here this morning, still streaming west to northeast. a little bit of green here and there, there have been light sprinkles. now well newport of town. and north of baltimore, that is where we are picking up stuff. still patchy drizzle. oakland 5.

well. as we head into tonight mostly cloudy. an isolated hour can't be ruled out. by tomorrow morning, scattered showers for tuesday morning through midday. tomorrow looks to be a much wetter day in the sense only an isolated shower. even the afternoon, a few thunderstorms in spots to the west. by wednesday this thing will kick out north and east. so that we end up better by the middle of the week. today though isolated shower, upper 70s to near 80. tomorrow mid to upper 70s with much more in the way of showers, rumble of thunder. can't rule out a lingering shower. 82. by thursday if you have any shower chance, it will be really early. we really get cooler friday near seven, saturday and sunday though, hello fall. 58 saturday, 64 sunday. >> pull out those sweaters, right howard? >> we have the green light.

howard is going to have our forecast in a little bit and monika will have traffic as well. nice out there. >> nice, it is not raining, that is a plus. there is a few areas of the drizzle and sprinkles you were talking about. that looks like it is mainly well north of town. the hope is that we see some improvement. fortunately, not going to get there until the second half of the week, but this weekend, if you like fall. if you like dry, crisp air, a cool day, saturday and sunday it is finally going to happen. but today, looking at your day planner, not quite. partly to mostly cloudy skies today, maybe a sprinkle or two, even a drizzle in spots this morning. very muggy, 71 right now. for the feeling fall like at all. highs upper 70s to low 80s as the moisture continues to flow southwest to northeast. we don't see a lot in the way of rain. north of baltimore, a light green on the map, we are seeing less than we were.

into 95. no problems leaving the beltway. let's take a live look at duke street looking good to the 14th street bridge. over to your travel times, 66 inbound right now. 11 minutes from hunter mill or 7100 to the beltway. 295 to the 11th street bridge is 7 minutes right now. coming up, i'll update you on the 66 accident at 5:40. back to you andrea and jessica. we could learn later this morning when the washington monument will reopen. >> the historic landmark has been closed since it was damaged in the earthquake last month. surae chinn joins us live with more. >> reporter: good morning, we should be learning much more, later on today. we should learn how much in significant damage was sustained by the earthquake last month. and also, we learned there was much more damage after hurricane irene, because there was

standing water inside the monument after hurricane irene blew through. again, engineers should be telling us how much of the damage, what are the repairs and how much it will cost and when this monument will actually be open again. because it happen closed for so many weeks now. we know there was significant damage, including several four foot cracks from this 555-foot, 127-year-old landmark. structural engineers have been examining the inside and outside of the structure for weeks now. we can imagine it is an extensive process, because the walls are 15 to 18 inches thick. a national parks service spokesperson said mortar popped out of it, where you could see sunlight pouring in. they have to make these repairs quickly, because winter will soon be arriving. the national parks service already winterizes the monument routinely every year. just imagine if they have to replace the stone, the mortar

and there are cracks still inside the landmark when there is snow, freezing temperatures contracting and expanding. that could be really complicating the system and the process here of repairing this beautiful landmark. back to you. >> surae chinn reporting live from the site of the washington monument. hearts are heavy this morning after a solemn gathering in dupont circle. friends came to remember a murder victim whose killer is still on the alert. matt jablow has details. >> reporter: two weeks after he was beaten to death, his body found on 11th street northwest, friends and colleagues came together to mourn his passing and focus attention on the case. >> he was charming, loving, he was caring. >> reporter: the 35-year-old depollen was an aeronautical engineer who ran a consulting business. he was also openly gay and

sometimes dressed in women's clothing, like he did the night of his murder. tonight though, he was remembered for not what he wore, but who he was. bob schaeffer was depollen's long time partner. >> he was my life, my everything. >> reporter: members of washington's gay, lesbian and transgender community are concerned that several transgender people have been attacked here in washington recently and all of the attacks have so far gone unsolved. >> it is disheartening and yeah, frightening. >> despite his tragic death, his friends tonight made a point to emphasize all accomplished in his life and all the people he touched. >> very generous, very kind heart, brilliant, brilliant man. >> reporter: much was made of his love of shakes spear, and some turned to shakespeare
