and rick perry, his strongest showing yet. susan mcginnis for cbs news, washington. the threat of government showdown is over. at least until tuesday. yesterday, the house approved a stop gap spending measure which funds uncle sam past the deadline. it now goes to president obama for his signature. >> it includes a $2.7 billion provision in disaster aid which is less than both sides wanted but they couldn't decide how to pay for it. the stop gap measure funded the government through tuesday when congress comes back from vacation and will vote on another funding bill. >> the onion is being criticized for its latest story, you may have heard about this yesterday. the paper sent out a tweet describing screens and gunfires in the capitol building. at first, the onion gave no sign it was a joke. if you read the newspaper, you know that's what they do. it became clear after further tweets and stories linked to them. the u.s. capitol police were not amused and neither were the

people peeling apart the onion considering them in poor taste by doing this. the white house says there are no plans to recall u.s. ambassador from syria following an attack there. supporters of syrian president basha assad pelted robert ford with tomatoes and eggs as he arrived for a meeting. ford and his staff were not injured but several embassy vehicles were badly damaged. a midshipmen has been convicted of raping and sexually assaulting a female cadet. >> the 20-year-old third class patrick edmond raped his classmate in her dorm room last october. he testified the sex was consensual. he's expected to be expelled and sentenced to time in military prison because of this. >> defense lawyers in the murder trial of 50-year-old carmella della rosa spent thursday trying to prove she was insane when ar-o daughter f skywalk at tysons corner last november. several medical doctors and psychologists took the stand. they testified they had

diagnosed della rosa with major depressive disorder and had prescribed several antidepressants. none said she was psychotic or hallucinating. prosecutors believe della rosa was motivated by anger at her son-in-law. alexandria police are hoping new photos will help them find missing community activist harris. harris disappeared last wednesday night. just hours later, police say whoever was in the van tried to use his credit card at an atm in prince george's county. the van is a white dodge care have a ran with no front tags and police are trying to identify the man who was trying to use harris' credit card at a king street atm at 1:00 a.m. last thursday. it is 4:32. here is a look at what's making news this morning. day four of the trial of michael jackson's former doctor. conrad murray is charged twoye jurors heard from goes under da sessions with psychologists at

a prison facility in springfield, missouri and we've learned he spends most of his time alone in his cell watching tv and look at photos of his pets. loughner is accused of killing six people and injuring 13 more. it has taken more than two months but police now believe the same person or people are responsible for a series of vandalism cases in montgomery county. on three different nights in mid july, officers responded to calls of slashed tires and cars covered with graffiti. graffiti was found at herb et hoover and north bethesda middle schools. a solid tip could be worth a reward of $1,000. a d.c. police officer demoted after that about giving charlie sheen and other celebrities escorts around the city wants his promotion back. they gave sheen an escort. he was subsequently demoted when it became public. yesterday in court, he says he

good morning, everyone. anny in for howard on this friday morning. time to wake up. a sunny start to your friday morning. but by this afternoon, we'll see some high clouds roll in. and then we'll see partly sunny conditions by late this afternoon. it will be breezy also southwest winds 10 to 20 miles per hour. highs will be 75 to 79 degrees.

right now, 62 under clear skies. good news this morning's commute, fog not a major concern. speaking of the commute, here's monika with your traffic. good morning. >> good morning, anny. we'll fly inbound on the dulles toll road right now leaving the beltway. leaving the airport for the beltway, you'll be fine. no proshes on route 15 or 7 out of leesburg or 123 out of tysons corner. coming up, we'll take a look at maryland roads at 4:48. andrea and mike? >> time for the first "your money" report of the morning. >> jessica is here with headlines. so, an up day? maybe another one. >> maybe. fingers crossed. stocks are headed for their worst quarterly performance in three years. investors, of course, still concerned about europe's debt crisis. whether or not that's going to trigger a global recession for the second day in a row, we saw big morning rally then it lost steam by the close after being up 260 points. here's where things ended checking the numbers. dow stands at 11,153, finished the day up 143 points.

s nasdaq was down almost 11 and the s&p 500 was up 9 points. the nasdaq dragged lower by shares of advance microdevice which sank 16% after the chip maker cut its quarterly sales and profit forecast. here's a story everybody's talking about. say good-bye to free debit card transactions if you're a bank of a america customer. b of a plans to start charging customers a $5 monthly debit card fee. customers will be charged the fee if they use the card to make purchases. they will not be used if they only use it at an atm. chase and wells fargo have been testing $3 monthly debit card fees but changes come as banks adjust regulations that will limit how much money they make from the cards. general motors will add a new type of airbag to its crossover suvs. it pops up between the front seats. g.m. says the airbag could help prevent about 30% of fatalities in side crashes as well as prevent a lot of head and

you'll need your sunglasses, especially this morning. breezy and still warm. but then this weekend turning much colder! you'll definitely need your sweaters. temperatures around 62 in downtown. annapolis, 63. luray, mid-50s. winchester, 55. cumberland, 57. petersburg at 61 degrees at this hour. at reagan national, 62. clear skies out there. the dew point 58. yesterday was around upper 60s, close to 70. it does feel a lot less humid out there. here's a look at the future cast. you can see some of the clouds moving in late this afternoon. and we're not really expecting any showers from it but maybe out to the east, late tonight, maybe after midnight, we have a chance for some light shower activity to pop up. and then tomorrow, a better chance for some light passing showers and sprinkles. the green here looks scary.

tuesday, looking nice. we're warming back up to close to average by tuesday with lots of sunshine. these string of days look really great. we've earned it because it has been cloudy and kind of unsettled the last several days. here is a look at your traffic with monika. good morning. >> we deserve a quiet traffic morning as well. that's exactly what it is. friday morning light. good morning, everybody. we have the green light. let me show you what it looks like around town. 270, coming in from frederick down past route 121 all the way down to the point where the lanes divide, it pretty much looks like this. very light. 355, no problems in rockville. american legion bridge, looking good here as well. leaving virginia and maryland across the bridge span. no problems to report and no lane closures. now, we'll end with the beltway look at route four near andrews air force base. looking good through oxon hill and down to the wilson bridge into alexandria. no problems northbound into new carrollton and college park. in my next report, we'll take a look at virginia at 4:56.

mike and andrea? >> the state of virginia is withholding $20 million in transportation funding from fairfax county, arlington and alexandria and it is all over a seat on metro's board of directors. the state secretary of transportation says that group hasn't signed a new transit contract, giving the state a seat on the board. but the northern virginia traffic commission says that could violate its terms with metro. if no compromise is made, the virginia railway express says it could run out of money at the end of october. a heads up to drivers in virginia. starting today, the left exit from the inner loop of the beltway to i-66 west will close for good. that is exit 49c. the ramp is being shut down because of the new hot lanes. drivers who want to take 66 west will now have to use exit 49a. that's the one on the right. the virginia town at the epicenter of the east coast earthquake is still working to return things to normal. >> especially in the schools of louisa county. students are dealing with classes in different buildings, sharing rooms and even going to

class on saturday. in a show of support, elementary school students from neighboring county became pen pals with kids in louisa county. they sent hand-written notes to say hi along with plenty of school supplies. >> the messages were simply that of caring, that we're thinking about them. it is kind of our version of a group hug. >> it means a lot to get something from somebody who you know, who does my job just in a different location and they understand the challenges or have an idea of what the challenges are like. >> schools in louisa county are using dozens of trailers for classroom. two school buildings suffered about $60 million in damage. we've all heard the old saying there's no such thing as a free lunch. apparently that goes for dinner, too. >> residents hoping for free turkeys this thanks giving are going to have to earn them. matt jablow explains. >> reporter: the turkey give away is a ward eight

if you have kids in the system, you'll want to encourage them to get involved in their local pta meetings. it is a way to get them done and i like it. >> councilman barry says he expects to give away 4,000 turkeys this year. the give away will be held tuesday, november 22nd at the union temple church. we're following breaking news now at 4:51. several news outlets are now reporting that an american who has now helped to radicalize people in al-qaeda, anwar alky has been killed. >> i put the glasses on. anwar alky is the first person the government gave permission to go down, hunt and kill him. they have done that apparently and we'll keep following this story and bring you more details and specifics as soon as we get them.

>> ok. moving on now, the number of americans kicking the habit is leveling off in recent years. according to centers for disease control, smoke rates among working americans dropped only about 1% in the last year. the cdc says young people smoke the most. nearly 24% of them light up. about 9% of educators smoke which is the lowest in the survey. the highest rate, construction workers. 31% of them are smokers. analysts say those rates may have more to do with smoking rules at those particular jobs though. >> doctors at children's hospital in philadelphia have uncovered some new genes associated with type i diabetes. researchers say this discovery could help unlock the origin of the disease and possibly lead to new treatments. type i diabetes affects 200 million people worldwide. researchers are using twitter now to track people's daily mood swings around the world. cornell university researchers spent two years tracking the tweets of a about two and a
