campaign back on track, political observers are still waiting to see whether another potential candidate jumps into the race. new jersey governor chris christie didn't answer questions sunday but he's reportedly closing in on a decision and apparently even has a team looking into a possible presidential bid. >> i think he's done a great job as governor. i think he would be a very viable candidate. some high profile republicans are ready to see christie run but others believe his moderate views on issues like gun control and immigration could hold him back. >> i think that that is absolutely a liability for him if he gets in the race. >> with only about 100 days before the first republican caucus, christie will have to make up his mind soon. susan mcginnis for cbs news, washington. today, a team of engineers is expected to reassess weather conditions before continuing their inspection of the washington monument. on saturday, one of the climbers inspecting for earthquake damage was blown about 30 feet off the

washington monument's face by a gust of wind. eric stone wasn't hurt in the incident. inspection work was suspended this weekend because of the wet weather. the national landmark is closed indefinitely but the climbers have become a popular tourist attraction high above the nation's capital as they go about their work at the monument. >> 30 feet. that's scary. up 500. work on the extension to dulles from metro is behind schedule by as much as six months. a progress report obtained by "the washington examiner" it shows the project's contractor reported being behind 188 days. the delay means the first phase of the silver line won't open until june of 2014 instead of late 2013. no word on how much money the delay would add to the cost of the project. project officials say there's only $83 million in a $300 million emergency fund used to comp the expenses unexpected in that project. customers will have to pay more for a taxi ride.

they announced plans to remove a $19 cap on fares. the meeter will keep running no matter how long the ride. that's on top of surcharges for extra bags or additional passengers and also the $1 gas surcharge because that still remains in effect. >> the state department is warning americans traveling around the world to be on alert after a u.s. military strike which killed a u.s. born al- qaeda leader in yemen. as former vice president dick cheney is defending the obama administration's use of force. >> reporter: officials warn the killing of a u.s.-born leader of al-qaeda in yemen raises the risk of anti-american violence worldwide. anwar al-awlaki was killed on friday. the new mexico native spoke fluent english and used the internet to gain a worldwide network. >> he was the pied piper of al- qaeda trying to inspire americans and others to attack fellow citizens. >> the radical cleric played a

role in attacks against the united states including the fort hood shooting and the failed underwear bombing on kris mayday in 2009. the state department issued a worldwide travel alert saying supporters of the american born cleric may retaliate. officials say americans traveling overseas may be a target. carrie lynn begacy is flying to italy. >> i think anybody is traveling would rather be safe and cautious than to ignore things because we all want to make sure we're safe. >> friday's attack killed american sameer kahn, a chief publicist. civil liberties groups raised concerns about targeting u.s. citizens. dick cheney defended president barack obama. >> i think the president ought to have that authority to order that kind of strike even when it involves an american citizen. >> experts say al-awlaki's death is a blow to the terror network but al-qaeda and yemen

remains a threat. newark liberty international airport. a top yemeni official says rumors that friday's drone strike killed the top bomb maker is not true. a local family is mourning the loss of a husband and father killed in afghanistan. first sergeant billy siercds was killed. the 32-year-old soldier died a day later. his wife georgian and two young sons live in virginia. his family says gent siecks will be laid to rest at arlington national cemetery. more than two weeks, a group called occupy wall street has been demonstrating against corporate greed and social inequality. >> it is about time for the people to rise up and say we are the people. we are the public and we should decide what's right. >> we have a lot. the basic issue is our

democratic -- >> saturday police arrested more than 700 people as they tried to cross the brooklyn bridge, block traffic. several unions are planning to join protestors for a march this week. new york city michael bloomberg has not said how long he'll let protestors camp out in lower manhattan. >> at 3-1, the redskins are off to their best start in years. >> they're starting to get concerned because of what looks like a shaky offense. not a great day for rex grossman yesterday. he had a decent performance. in the second possession of the game, he hit santana moss. 'skins jump out 7-0. ryan had a huge game after being benched for three weeks. he finished with 135 yards, 19 years including this 20-yard scamper to get the 'skins up 17-0 in the third. the rams got within 7 and had a chance to get back in it when rex threw this pick to james.

release of the september unemployment report. wall street really hoping the fourth quarter which starts today will be a lot better than the third. oh, man. stocks slammed last quarter with the dow, s&p 500 and nasdaq losing 10% or more. here are the numbers from friday. the dow standing this morning at 10,913 closed down 240 points. the nasdaq off by 65 and the s&p 500 was down by 29 points. a big change for the washington real estate market. many borrowers in the country's most expensive housing markets like ours are forced to make higher downpayments and pay higher rates for jumbo mortgages. that's because this weekend, new rules went into effect to reduce the maximum loan size that fannie mae and freddie mac can guarantee. in several of the most expensive housing markets, they can only back loans of $625,000 or less. that's down from $730,000. also, many borrowers who were previously eligible to

participate in federal housing administration programs will no longer qualify for special, lower downpayments. this is even before new rules potentially quick in requiring 20% downpayments so there are small incremental changes that could affect markets like ours. >> where is the help? >> yeah, right. exactly. >> wow. >> thank you, jess. >> community comes together to help some local families. that that were displaced by flooding. a. >> maryland family files a suit against the farm that is believed to be the source of the listeria outbreak. these sweet honey clustery things have fiber?

side, we're seeing the showers here but these are going to try to rotate back toward the south and the east. and yes, there is a little bit of snow near snow shouldn't you, west virginia. they had several inches on saturday there. right now, along and west of interstate 81, really down into frederick county up through eastern west virginia, up toward hagerstown, light rain showers there. this stuff is not coming down too heavily. with temperatures only in the low to mid-40s, miserable start to the day. one more cool, damp day. breezy and warmer tuesday. in the mid to the upper 60s. nice by wednesday. back in the 70s then. right now, it looks like a good- looking weekend ahead for this coming weekend. 41 in laytonsville. 44 for reston and fairfax down south toward belvoir, 47. 43 in columbia and here in town, thanks to the warmer waters of the potomac, we're still holding ton 48.

winds are calm at reagan national. humidity at 80%. mostly cloudy skies. some of you might see a star in a break. national, two big storms on the maps. first big storm, that's on the west coast. not quite there yet. off of british columbia. up toward portland, seattle, eugene, then in the middle of the country, a few showers to the northern plains. other big storm spinning for days and days here across the east. we've had quite a few of the cutoff lows. they get cut off from the main circulation. they don't move very quickly. we've got the situation this morning. looking at the future cast, through midday, scattered showers here and there. more on the mountains than toward us. we'll stay with a couple of showers through the afternoon and evening hours. then as we head into the overnight, things will start to clear out except for the mountains. tomorrow morning could be an early shower in parts of the northern shenandoah valley. look by midday, we're looking

sunshine here. clouds, a few showers in the mountains. that storm system which has been bugging us is finally pulling offshore. we'll get into a nicer afternoon. kind of breezy behind that system. then it starts to pull away even more so wednesday and wednesday turns real nice. highs on wednesday as we've been saying, a couple of times already, in the 70s. looking at the next few days, today, 55 degrees. 67 tomorrow with a breeze. winds tomorrow could gust over 20 miles per hour. by wednesday, 74. little bit cooler thursday. northeasterly winds coming in off the atlantic should keep us a little bit cool. still not bad. right now, the weekend looks warmer with highs well up in the 70s and we deserve it. monika? >> yes, we do deserve it. thank you so much, howard. good morning, everybody. we have the green light although i'm going to take you over to the bw parkway. there is a report of an accident at route 198, not sure of lane information yet. we'll give that to you. in laurel, watch your step on the bw parkway at route 198.

let's head over to the beltway. still nice and light for monday morning. no problems as you leave this point into silver spring over to 270, we'll take you there now on a map. no problems on 270 as you head in from frederick all the way down toward gaithersburg and rockville and down to the point where the lanes divide. we'll wind a live shot of the beltway heading south toward the potomac river. no problems into tysons corner and down to 66. in my next report, we'll update you on the bw parkway. the victims of last month's flooding in virginia received an outpouring of support from neighbors and friends in woodbridge this weekend. >> as matt jablow tells us, most of the victims are still piecing their lives and homes back together. >> reporter: so much was destroyed in that flood. >> reporter: a little more than three weeks after the holly acres trailer park was inundated from floodwaters from tropical storm lee -- >> we had several families that lost everything. >> the trailer park is still divided into large piles of

debris and 40 of the families that lived here are still homeless. >> they've lost all of their furniture. they've lost all of their household items, clothing. >> today are, a benefit concert was held. to raise money for the victims of the flood. >> i've also everything. >> people like rosa cervantes who said the flood destroyed everything she and her family owns. >> my brother and my sister and my other brother. >> this is to raise actual funds for the family. >> nancy lyle with is with the woodbridge workers committee which organized the fund- raiser. many of the families affected by the flood have received donations of furniture from various charities. right now, many of them still need money. >> they have nothing right now. >> according to lyle, every penny donated will be given to the victims of the flood. the woodbridge workers committee will continue accepting donations for the foreseeable future. matt jablow, 9news now. a maryland family is suing

the farm responsible for shipping listeria-tainted cantaloupes to local stores after one of their relatives died. >> 87-year-old clarence wells died after eating cantaloupe that originated from jensen farms in colorado. so far, 17 deaths have been linked to the cantaloupe contamination. the centers for disease control says that number could go up. >> the numbers just have me in just complete awe that there are a million and a half cantaloupes and my father is one of the people who ate the cantaloupe. >> listeria cases linked to the cantaloupes have been reported in 19 states including maryland. well, it appears parents still have quite a few safety concerns when it comes to vaccinations for their children. a new report finds more than one in ten parents do not follow the recommended vaccination schedule for their kids. some parents choose to delay vaccines or forgo them altogether. federal health officials recommend by age 6, children

should have vaccinations against 14 diseases. multiple surgeries may put toddlers at a greater risk for learning disabilities. a study in the journal pediatrics shows children under the able of 2 are three times as likely to develop speech and language problems if they're put under anesthesia several times. many toddlers have surgeries for everything from hernias to ear problems. here is another reason to quit smoking. new researcher has shown people who light up are twice as likely to have a stroke as nonsmokers. they're likely to have a stroke ten years younger than other people. >> before we head to break, it is time to look at the question of the morning. >> 49% of us say we would pay extra for this at a restaurant. a, a kid free zone. b, a private room or c, personal wait staff. what do you think it is? add your guess to our facebook page. we'll reveal the answer alert this morning.

that's all we'll do. with a few showers here and there and your drive home temperature still a brisk 54. monika? >> howard, we'll take a look at the gw parkway. i'm making phone calls to park police to find out about reports of an accident on the bw parkway at route 198. 95 looks fine in from baltimore. in my next report, more on that and other roadways at 5:01. supreme court justices, staff and attorneys took part in the annual red mass at st. matthew's cathedral. washington archbishop cardinal donald wuerl celebrated the mass. it is held on the first sunday of october to kick off the supreme court session. it is a tradition that dates back 58 years. capitol hill watering hole is closing its doors -- did close its doors for the last time on sunday. it closed after 44 years of serving members of congress, lawyers, college students not to mention the neighbors there in capitol hill. the hawk n dove has been operating without a lease and then a rival bar owner snapped up the building's lease.

the customers and the bar owners lamented the loss of that neighborhood institution. >> it was the heart and soul of capitol hill. it was where people went with friends and you could -- it was like cheers in boston. it was the neighborhood bar. >> i have six employees over 35 years and another six over 25. so, it just shows what you kind of place it is and how it developed into a big family. >> in all the contents of the bar are now being auctioned off online. the hawk n dove restaurant and bar will be closed for five months. renovations will take place and it will be reopened as a casual dining spot. a king has been dethroned by a dolphin. the warner bros. family film dolphin tale took the top spot with $13.2 million. dolphin tale features harry connick jr., ashley judd and morgan free man in a real life story about strangers who team up to help an injured debut.

the movie debuted a week earlier at number three but it kept fans coming. moneyball starring brad pitt took in $12.5 million to take the second spot. the 3d release of the lion king slipped to third place. coming in at fourth, 50/50 with $8.5 million and courageous at $8.8 million. one of the oldest reality shows came to d.c. looking for new cast members. i thought the show was gone. people lined up outside the town tavern for a chance to chat with the producers of mtv's real world. the show started in may of 1992 before some of this weekend's applicants were even born and it is casting now for its 27th season. auditions were held in three other cities this weekend with 14 more scheduled before the cast members are selected. >> i know i'm old but i don't watch mtv but i had no idea it was still on. two of hollywood's biggest
