others in d.c., boston and st. louis pitched tents or waved protest signs at passing cars. protestors are expected to meet thursday in freedom plaza to demand greater taxation for the rich and for big corporations. and some protections for social security and medicare. >> this week marks ten years since the u.s. war began in afghanistan and a new cbs poll shows public support appears to be waning. >> about 1,000 people were surveyed. 39% of them believe the war has been successful. 50% say it hasn't. 69% say the war has lasted a lot longer than they expected. 62% want to decrease the number of american forces in afghanistan. >> jury selection begins today in the trial of the alleged underwear bomber. nigerian-born umar abdu abdu fut alan. he's acting as his own attorney. >> the massachusetts man plotting to fly explosives

packed model planes into targets here in washington has entered a not guilty plea. 26-year-old rezwan ferdaus made the plea in a court appearance in worcester, massachusetts. it has been orchestrated by the government suggesting an entrapment defense. curtis is a u.s. citizen accused of taking possession of grenades, guns and explosives from undercover fbi agents posing as al-qaeda operatives. they claim he tried to attack the capitol and the pentagon. martin o'malley's redistricting advisory committee released a proposal when it comes to redrawing the congressional districts in the state. the biggest change would be if this goes through, the state's sixth congressional district. a republican strong hold in western "american idol." the proposal would redraw the district to include leaning counties. it is expected to make the race more competitive. lawmakers are expected to debate the proposal in a

special session coming up later this month. the most recent health department investigation of a suspected cancer cluster near fort detrick came back with inconclusive results. >> investigators in the study found solid evidence of higher than expected cancer rates when you compare it to the rest of frederick county. that is with one exception. gary nurenberg brings us up to date. >> residents have long noted what appear to be greater incidents of cancer among neighbors of fort detrick which they believe has polluted with carcinogens, the air, the land and water. >> there is no abnormal amount of cancer for any of the cancer types. >> on-going health department study of cancer cases is based on the maryland cancer registry that began compiling cases in 1992. it did find some evidence of slightly higher cancer rates in general for a six-year period in the early 2000s. >> compared with both the u.s. rate and the maryland rate and

this is -- this shows age adjusted rates of all cancers in maryland and in frederick county. >> but all told -- >> at the end of the day, none of these appear to be statistically significant evidence of cluster. >> going back to 1929 statistics only is not good enough for one cancer survivor who attended nearby waverly elementary school. >> if you take into consideration that fort detrick started their experiments in the 40s and was still burying stuff in the 70s, the clustering i'm aware of growing up here definitely happened '70s, '80s, maybe even late '60s. i sent out an e-mail response to my classmates in a five year span, while some are reluctant to give names, i had 23 response of people in my age group that had cancer that went to school in the district that are all under 40. some have died.

some are struggling with it now. i've had it twice. >> more lawsuits and investigations and studies are expected to come on this story. sadly, some of the cancer patients at the center of the story will have died before the questions are resolved. the supreme court has decided it will not hear a maryland man's argument that the secondment allows him to carry a gun outside his home for self-defense. in 2007, charles williams jr. was arrested for having his legally-purchased handgun outside his home without a state permit. some gun advocates say people have the constitutional right to carry their guns outside the house as well as inside for self-protection. but the court has refused to take up williams' case. the defense in the carmella della rosa trial is trying to paint a picture of a disturbed woman who didn't know what she was doing when she tossed her grandchild over a sky bridge at tysons corner mall. park rangers testified about finding her minivan down a mountain after she drove it off skyline drive in one of four

suicide attempts. her psychologists believed her to be in a downward spiral. she had never diagnosed della rosa as psychotic or bipolar. here's a look at the other things making news now. amanda knox is expect to the fly back to the united states today after spending four years in an italian prison. monday, she broke down in tears after an appeals court overturned her conviction for the 2007 murder of her british roommate. the court also cleared knox's former italian boyfriend and her codefendant in the case. the trial against michael jackson's doctor is in the second week. they testified that dr. conrad murray never discussed administering a powerful anesthetic. dr. conrad murray gave jackson a lethal dose of propofol that led to his defense. the defense, however, claims jackson gave himself the fatal dose when murray left the room.

prosecutors want an appeals court to immediately return the tucson shooting rampage suspect to a missouri prison. last friday, jared lee loughner's attorneys asked to delay the transfer saying it would cause him harm. prosecutors said loughner gets does not medical care at the facility. loughner pleaded not guilty to 49 charges related to the january 8th shooting which killed six people and injured 13 more. our time is 4:37. at 4:40, job seekers in the district have an opportunity to meet face-to-face with potential employers today. jessica doyle has details in her "your money" report. a new proposal to expand metro transit through montgomery county has some residents there crying foul. >> we're back with your weather first in two minutes. you're watching 9news now.

>> red is the color of the day. unfortunately. why did i dress this way today? we're seeing more losses overseas today. >> you look nice. >> thank you very much. the market does not though. you saw the sell-off here in the u.s. yesterday. blame greece yet again. a setback in the country's financial crisis has hammered stocks yet again around the world. checking the numbers, the dow standing at 10,655, dropped 258 points in trading yesterday. nasdaq was down by 79 points and the s&p 500 dropped by 32 points. in the meantime, here at home, government watch dog says fannie mae knew about allegations of improper foreclosures back in 2003 but didn't have to stop them. a report due out today reveals an unnamed shareholder warned fannie of the alleged foreclosure in 2003 but the inspector general for fannie's regulator says it responded by hiring a law firm to investigate the claims two years later. we're helping you get hired

well, on live doppler 9000 hd, what we're picking up is down to our south. here's dahlgren, colonial beach, newland. these are very light sprinkles still in newland. this is a real gentle rain that's been falling during the overnight. he's sitting at a cool 50 right now. 52 at the tappahannock airport. 50 in winchester. we've got some chill out there from hagerstown to oakland in the mid-40s. hagerstown out west toward cumberland, some of the fog, visibilities here down to quarter mile. so, the rest of us, visibilities are pretty good. we'll watch that up north. 52. mostly cloudy at national. few breaks. winds west at 5. the dew point 46. the drier air is going to start to come in. we've got the storm system here. between there and the west, it is pretty quiet. there is a storm system offshore. look at all of the moisture which is streamed in the pacific from new mexico, colorado, west right to the west coast. rather unsettled. once you get east of the

on the west. we'll fly the bw parkway at 4:56. mike and andrea. >> residents in montgomery county say they're paying for metro's progress. >> a new bigger purple line propose threatening to divide one neighborhood in half and possibly destroy dozens of businesses. delia gonsalves has more on the residents' concerns. >> the light rail option for the purple line. >> the governor made the announcement among cheers from the community but now, the purple line is causing concern. >> there's no hope for us to keep our building. >> he stands to lose his 30- year-old rental property and its air conditioning wholesaler. in fact, the shop is just one of dozens of businesses along brookville road that may be destroyed to make way for the new purple line. >> this is what they call progress. progress. >> here's why. the purple line light rail project started out in 2003 as a four mile trolley.

trying to ease traffic congestion. he announced a year-long study which will examine the community patterns. >> the supernova study will look at drivers from west virginia, maryland and the district. the goal is to increase mobility and give commuters more choice. vdot says there's been increased congestion on i-95 south and the fairfax county parkway now that more than 20,000 defense related workers moved to the base. among the options being considered are new bus routes along route one from alexandria to stafford. >> is medicare fraud connected to prescription drug abuse? a congressional report found tens of thousands of medicare recipients got prescriptions from multiple doctors for the same 14 drugs costing the system more than $100 million. a person got prescriptions from more than 3600 oxycodone polls. that's a four-year supply.

the report says questionable prescription amounted to a cost of $148 million in 2008 alone. roughly 33,000 pounds of lettuce sent to 19 states and canada now being recalled because of listeria contamination. the farm involved says 90 of the roughly 2500 cartons reached the store shelves in fact. so far, no illnesses have been reported though. >> nearly 40,000 women are expected to die this year from breast cancer. according to the american cancer society, breast cancer rates are increasing in women living in poor areas. researchers say screening or lack of there it is the reason why. half of four women over 40 get regular mammograms. but an affluent neighborhood, nearly 73% of the women get screened regularly. >> overweight children have three times the risk of developing high blood pressure. indiana doctors followed 1100 children for five years and they found when children
