no, why is wall street looking at d.c. to take over our democracy. that's what's wrong with america. bruce leshan, 9news now. >> organizers are expecting thousands of firefighters, janitors, the poor and unemployed to join the rally. organizers plan to march down to the u.s. chamber of commerce across the street from the white house carrying rez mace, application and demanding jobs. there is both good and bad unanimous report about the job front. according to payroll processor adp, private companies did increase their hirings last month. but another survey shows the number of people laid off also increased to 116,000 last month. that's 126% jump from august. that has congress scrambling. >> we're told senate democrats are making changes to part of president obama's jobs bill and the changes aren't expected to be welcomed by republicans. democrats are including a 5% tax on incomes higher than $1

million. senate majority leader harry reid plans to bring the bill to the floor next week. former alaska governor sarah palin will not run for president in 2012. she made the announcement during a radio interview yesterday. palin thinks she can be more effective for the other true public servants if she stays in the private sector. prince george's county police are warning women who walk to the suitland station about a serial rapist. >> two women have been attacked in the last eight days. each woman was attacked by a gunman in the 4700 block of silver hill road. first thing in the morning, people travelling to the metro station. >> it is kind of scary because i often walk to the metro in the morning. usually around 7:00 a.m. the first attack was at 5:30 a.m. on september 27th. >> the second attack was at 6:45 on tuesday morning and although the man was armed, the victim managed to pull away as he tried to pull her. it worked for her. the question is whether that's

footbridge in tysons corner could come today. della rosa has pleaded not guilty. defense attorneys claim della rosa suffers from a mental illness and the day of the incident, she didn't understand what she was doing. prosecutors argue she knew right from wrong. now the jury has to decide. >> a communication breakdown is said to be the cause of a murder in prince george's county. on september 19th, deputies came to the home. deangelo walker to serve him an order of protection after a neighbor complained he felt threatened by the 25-year-old. walk her a warrant out for his arrest for second degree assault but for some reason, the deputies didn't take him into custody. police say hours later, he shot and killed a man in capitol heights. the case is now under investigation. walker is being held without bond and charged with first- degree murder. here's a look at some of the other things making news now. flags in birmingham, alabamaing are flying at half staff in

memory of the reverend fred shuttleworth died yesterday. he cofounded the christian leadership conference and was at the forefront of the movement. in birmingham, he was the target of three bombing attacks and beatings and was repeatedly arrested for speaking his mind. the tech world is mourning the loss of steve jobs. the apple cofounder and former ceo died wednesday. he was 56. jobs was the creative force behind theipod, the ipad, the iphone and he was credited with turning apple into the world's most valuable technology company. the suspect in the tucson shooting rampage will remain in arizona at least for now while his lawyers wait to hear about an appeal they filed. they're fighting a ruling to send jared lee loughner back to missouri for four more months of psychological treatment. loughner has been through four months of treatment there. >> you will no longer see people rappelling down the side of the washington monument. yesterday, engineers finished inspecting exterior damage

caused by this summer's 5.8 magnitude earthquake. the quake caused a number of cracks in the monument but engineers say the 127-year-old landmark remains structurally sound. their report will help determine how the monument should be repaired. rfk stadium is 50 years old. >> and some well-connected d.c. citizens are hoping some day the washington redskins will return home to a new rfk in the district. the issue was raised wednesday when d.c. leaders met to discuss plans to commemorate the stadium's 50th anniversary. the future would be that this stadium would be demolished and we would build a brand new stadium on this site. retractible roof for the redskins. >> you think the redskins ever come back to d.c. if not rfk? >> i hope so. that's anybody from this area would hope that. >> mayor vincent gray declined to say whether any talks were underway about the redskins returning to a new and improved rfk stadium. time now coming up on 4:36,

day. takeover battle may be brewing once again for yahoo! "the associated press" is reporting microsoft is considering another bid for the internet company after a bidder and unsuccessal buyout attempt in 2008. microsoft joins a host of other companies look at yahoo! including the chinese internet company. it has a market value of about $18 billion. the nation's largest retail trade group expects winter holiday sales to rise nearly 3% this year. 2.8% to $465 billion would be smaller than 2010's 5.2 increase. the forecast is predicting stronger growth even despite the weak economy. still ahead, is that text you send while you're driving worth risking your life and possibly someone else's? >> a new study suggests most of us still refuse to unplug when we're behind the wheel. we'll have more on that coming up.

it is nice, it is warm under this. we've got the dips off the east coast. the one on the west, this trough in the jet stream allowing the storminess to come in. it was raining yesterday in l.a. you don't see much rain here during the summertime. so, rain there, still raining this morning. california through the northwest. rains and mountain snows also. some areas potentially around yellowstone could see a foot or more in the next 48 hours. for us, the ridge will build in. the nice weather will build in as well. it already has built in. it will stay here for the next several days. let's show you the future cast. we've got high pressure near toronto this morning. factor in a cold front that slid through. that's one of the reasons we'll be cooler. with it, the northeast winds coming in. continue to watch this front slide south during the day as high pressure builds in. we're not expecting a lot of wind but with the high to the north and the clockwise circulation, we get into the northeast flow. that's going to keep us just a little bit cooler. as we head toward tomorrow, high pressure still overhead. so, another great day. it is just going to be good with light winds here,

toll road at 4:56. just about 4:48 now, the government's plan to modernize air-traffic control systems has run into serious problems and those problems are threatening to delay the upgrades and make it more expensive. >> the federal aviation administration plans to replace the current system with one based on satellite technology but software problems have delayed full deployment of a critical flight tracking system . 95% of people know it is dangerous to text or e-mail while they drive but 35% say they still don't it anyway. the district wants to add the name to the smithsonian metro station. it is one of four station names. the city wants metro to alter. dddot requested it become

waterfront arena stage. they want ballpark to be add odd to the navy yard station. no word on when metro may respond. another person has died after eating cantaloupe contaminated with listeria. the death toll is now 18 from that outbreak. investigators at the cdc are still looking for what caused the contamination. in addition to those deaths, at least 100 people in 20 states have gotten sick. stress is now the most common reason a worker will take off for an illness that eclipses stroke, heart attacks and other problems according to a new report. >> i can believe it. some experts are going so far as to call it the black death. the 21st century. as brittany morehouse reports, it is a catch-22 because it is often work that causes the stress that hinders our performance on the job. ♪ under pressure

new four star resort hotel in the southwest waterfront as part of a massive development. "the washington post" reports the team that restored the willett hotel is behind the project. the plans call for a 5,000 square foot rooftop lounge. we now know when a statue of former president reagan will be unveiled at reagan national airport. the metropolitan washington airport authority announced the new statue of the president will go on permanent display november 1st. it will be outside the airport's terminal a, planning and design of the likeness reportedly cost $445,000. hugh jackman's latest movie may look like it is all about boxing robots but real steel has a lot more to do with fighting for relationships. >> sandra hughes has more on the movie which opens tomorrow. >> there's plenty of action in
