>> all right. moving on now to a more serious question. back to breaking news on the toddler murder trial in fairfax, virginia, finding carmela dela rosa guilty of first-degree murder and decided on a sentence. peggy fox has been covering the trial since it began and joins us with more now as it all unfolds, peggy? >> reporter: well, it took a jury of eight men and four women just six hours to convict carmela dela rosa, to find her guilty of first-degree murder. and now, the jury decided to sentence carmela dela rosa to not life, but 35 years in prison. the jury did not buy her insanity defense. her attorneys tried to prove that she did not know what she was doing, the night she threw her grandchild, 2 1/2-year-old off the 35-foot high sky bridge at the corner center, right if many front of the baby's mother and other family members last november. and now, a short time ago,

family and friends, they left the courthouse, there were a lot of tears in the courtroom today. and no sense of victory. >> i thought the case was, you know, a difficult case for both sides, nothing really surprises me in the jury system. i'm disappointed. >> she was really mean and an angry person. they certainly played a role, but certainly it was not an excuse for killing a child. >> reporter: now, a judge will be reviewing the 35-year sentence. he cannot add to it, he can decrease it. and there was no sense of victory today, just loss. i'm peggy fox, reporting live. back to you. >> a tremendous loss. thank you. right now at 6:00, an unprovoked attack leaves a businessman with a shattered draw. it shattered his confidence in d.c. police. this is a story you'll see only

on 9. >> reporter: daniel's parents live in rockville, a native, but now lives in new york and was just down for business when he was attacked with a crowbar in such a random way that his family can only guess it was some kind of gang initiation. >> my jaw was all the way down here. it struck me a couple of times, my ears were still ringing here, and there was a lot of blood coming out of -- a lot of blood coming out of my mouth. >> reporter: they show multiple fractures to his jaw, now his jaw is wired shut. >> and you realize, you know, how precurious your safety is at any second, you know, something random could happen. >> reporter: it all happened this past saturday around 3:00 a.m. he was walking up the 1700 block of connecticut avenue towards his hotel. >> and there was a lot of people, you know, that had

gotten in the streets. and i tried to look around and that guy jumped out, and you just, you know, he struck me with something. and you know, it kind of became a blur after that, he has hit me so hard, but he has said, you know, you need to pray for your life. >> faults have happened to me because, you know, it's terrible for a mother to watch somebody else go through this. >> reporter: daniel's mother has been caring for him in his rockville home. to add to their trauma, the family has become detectives going back to the scene, looking for clues because they never heard back from police until yesterday. >> i thought we were left hanging and that this was just, you know, not a priority. and then here he is, you know, damaged maybe for the rest of his life. >> reporter: now, we went to the scene of the crime, florida avenue and connecticut. there are a couple of surveillance cameras if many

that area that could have caught -- cameras in that area that could have caught the act. i called police and it took some time to hear back from them i should say, but they didn't havan explanation as to why this family was left out in the cold. >> any descriptions from him as to these guys? >> real generic, african american, young, in their 20s. >> wow. >> the attack happened just within a couple of minutes, and so he said once he was hit with that crowbar, it was lights out. >> yeah. >> thank you. for more jobs and an end to war, save social security and medicare, the occupied d.c. protests have big goals. tonight, protesters are marching around the city and occupying freedom plaza. bruce leshan is live there on pennsylvania avenue, bruce. i can see that they still have protesters around you? >> reporter: yeah, and you know what, if you were going to ask me whether or not i was going to stay here all night and i was going to tell you no, but

these folks, they have a permit to be right here, through sunday. while there is usually no camping in the city, they are planning to sleep out right here in freedom plaza day and night. these folks have joined protest -- forces with the protesters occupying manhattan for weeks now, indebted students, unemployed workers, janitors, firefighters, union members, all pushing from the left, hoping to end what they called corporate greed and change a political and financial system that they think is stacked against all, but the rich and the richest and most powerful among us. >> the thing you cannot see visually is that it is not a rally. it is people that are committed to live here night and day and for days and weeks and to go and shut down offices and buildings around the city. >> more jobs to the headquarters and the u.s. chambers of commerce a couple

hours ago, demanding jobs, but you know so far, no civil disobedience and no arrests. andrea? >> bruce, thank you very much. not often do you get a sound track for your live shot there. >> yeah, hopefully it has been in the public domain that they don't need to pay any royal city. >> thanks a lot, bruce. thanks for those stories as well. coming up new at 6:00, federal authorities are trying to find out why the saudi arabian man tried to open up the door of the airplane while the flight was still up in the air, which happened on the american flight 4305 last night, headed to indianapolis. and the passengers on board said that the 20-year-old walked to the the front and tried to open up the cabin door. they said that they were sitting right near them. >> it was just like that, you know, none of us were going to let them get out of it and we were also not going to

overreact and tackle someone to the ground. none of us thought that was necessary. >> they pulled them away from the door and took them back to the seat. they questioned them once the plane landed. he spoke only in broken english and didn't appear to know what he was doing. so far no charges have been filed. derek? pulling on the press today, pushing him to pass the job's plan. and the public out here, insisting that he tried to find the middle ground with the republicans, but he got nowhere. the gop leaderships say that is just not the case. >> why have you given up on the country deciding the campaign was here full time?

a new report shows just how difficult the country's economic woes have been on dcu. the study from the brookings institute found that one out of three lower income people in d.c. between the ages of 60 and 24, they are unemployed and not in school. that's almost double the national unemployment rate of 18.1% for that age group, anita? today, d.c. council chairman, brown, held a hearing for students from maryland and virginia attending the city's public schools illegally. he said for the 2012, 2011 school year that they investigated about 127 suspected cases, and 60 were determined to have involved non- residence going to d.c. schools. 14 families were built for the non-residence tuition. only two actually reimbursed

the city. >> when it comes to enforcing the law for those committed to committing fraud and to reimburse the district for the values of the students tuition, the record is very poor. >> brown has introduced a bill to improve enforcement for these school's laws. coming up next, metro takes action against a driver who took a disabled man on a ride to nowhere. what the family has to say when we come right back.

including the ipad, the iphone, and the ipod. >> how we take pictures on the world, and how the world moves forward. >> he's just the greatest thinker i ever knew, the greatest leader in common sense. >> the makeshift memorials are all popping outside the apple stores around the globe. steve jobs was 56. the governor of maryland, they want to make the state the silicone valley of cyber security. martin o'malley today kicked off what is called national cyber security awareness month in maryland. he says that the state is poised to take a leading role in the fight for cyber security. >> we have the highest percentage of the engineers and the scientists per capita. one of america's most highly skilled in the educated work forces and through the initiatives, we have estimated that we could create about 24,000 new cyber sector jobs in our state in the very near term future. >> the governor is joining leaders in business, education, and government at cyber core

technologies in elk ridge to dedicate a new logistic center and lab. okay, we need to keep this weather going right over for the weekend. >> absolutely. we need to lock this one in and it will be fun. and shoveling snow down the road, but nothing for them right now. we're looking at a forecast that is actually going to be staying fairly uniform for the next several days. we have seen the temperatures drop off just a little bit. i mentioned it earlier that at least we got up to 70 degrees here at the dulles international for the high today at reagan national. but all temperatures are beginning to drop off as we get closer towards sunset. we are looking at about 70 degrees inside or outside the beltway, at least for college park for holding on. but we're beginning to see a few of those become more widespread in and around the region. we will definitely be cooling off tonight. take the jacket with you as we will be dropping down into the 40s and the 50s. a chilly start for tomorrow morning as you head out to work. warmer temperatures for tomorrow that will be benefiting from the high

pressure for the next couple of days. keep it dry and see a slight warm up as we head into monday and even tuesday. here is how we will be looking overnight tonight. clear, but still chilly with our winds calm to light and by a sunset at 6:44. we will definitely see temperatures begin to move on down a little bit further. i'm expecting about 53 degrees for the city center. we should see about 46, 47 degrees towards leesburg and manassas, but even some of those 50s up towards our north. in all though, a very pleasant day for tomorrow. we will continue with this trend and some sunshine. move out of the 40s and the 50s by the afternoon. most of us should make it into the low 70s by late day. 78 degrees is what we are expecting a little closer for annapolis and for the major metro area, that should be the norm in towards the southern realm down to this area and off towards, well, leesburg. and things are slightly warmer by a degree or two. here is what we are looking at for the morning hours. clear night tonight, lots of

stars are out. temperatures are down into the 40s and the 50s. most of this will be hovering right around the middle end of the 50s by midday tomorrow, but the afternoon will be looking pretty good. take advantage, take the stroll late in the evening and even enjoy some of the sunset for tomorrow. friday's forecast, well, we will repeat things once again, back to the lower 70s where we are headed war the middle and upper 70s by the time you get towards the end of the weekend. but look how we have warmed up at the second half of our columbus day forecast. flirting with the 80-degree mark, making it into the lower 80s by monday and hold off on the rain chances, at least until we get back to work. >> okay. it looks great. hey, you're getting ready to go into a long weekend, my friend. >> yeah. verying long. -- yeah, verying -- yeah, very long. let's do a real sports cast and then we will mess around at 11:00. >> i love it. >> you have to be with us at 11:00 to see that. >> the pride of potomac is back.

and only one of those four ever played for the capitals, he left for a while, but now he is back. the potomac native is who we are talking about, rejoining us in the summer. and he played his first six seasons in d.c. and he left in '06 and spent the last five years in dallas and l.a. and tampa and montreal, now he's back. he does not wear the c like he did in his first go around, but he is still a leader and he likes the new digs. >> it feels good. i have never played with this team. it is probably the biggest difference, you know, meeting the new players, seeing some of them out there and what has been, yeah, a fun process. >> by the way, you know if you are wondering what the $55,000 watch looks like, mike green was wearing one during practice today. that's the royal oak offshores rose gold. he was wearing one as well, and apparently the players get 40% off. that's still a lot of smack even with the 40% off for a watch. and the masters, the memorial, the players

championship, the british open, these are the prestigetournaments we are used to seeing tiger woods play in. it is time to go slumming a little bit. there he was in san martin, california, not exactly augusta. this is a wedge approach. he sticks it, birdied from three feet, but then there is always a but then. in the shot on number two, he bogeyed there. then the shorty for par, it's under all those numbers and letters that didn't go in. that's a bogey. and then paul casey, he played a lot better out of the finish, losing this one. that's par the hard way. casey is tied for the lead at 4- under par. and just one playoff baseball game on display tonight. it's a big one. deciding game five between the yankees and tigers. he is facing them in a game two. winner meets who? the rangers, thank you. and the losers will go home.
