european leaders pledged to unveil a plan for solving the debt crisis by the end of the month. bruce. anita, imagine you're a substitute teacher getting ready for your class of the morning when suddenly a deer crashes through your classroom window. that's how school began this morning in lake ridge. armando trull joins us live and he has school surveillance video of the incident. >> as you just saw, this morning it was a home where a deer, not an antelope, played. >> i was on that sidewalk walking that way and the deer came through the woods and ran straight towards the building and in the window. >> i was in the classroom with another teacher. we heard a crash and we thought something had fallen down, then we looked at the drapes and we turn around and there there was this big brown buck circling

the room. it was injured. >> we immediately went into a lockdown, just in case the deer decided to run up and down the hallways. so we wanted the children safely behind closed doors. >> stumbling because the floor was slick and it just circled the room a couple times. i shut the door so it couldn't get out of the room and then it just ran back out the window again. >> i guess the deer was -- did not find what he expected was going to be inside. i thought maybe there was another deer in the room and so he exited the room in exactly the same manner as he entered it. out the same window. >> were you scared? >> no. later on, yes. >> now bruce, that window has been covered up with plywood and this is not their first encounter, of the wildlife kind. a mother bear and her cub was

found in the parking lot. not sure if mother bear was trying to sign up baby bear for classes. thank you for that. tonight, a tree house of all things is causing controversy in one falls church neighborhood after a father built it for his two young boys. the kids love their new play house, why are officials trying to tear the thing down? lindsey mastis joins us live from falls church. lindsey, come on now, we all wanted a tree house as kids, why would they want to take one down? >> i know, derek. this is the tree house that is causing all the controversy and it has to do with where it sits on the property. there's a street out front, a street over here. and that means that this tree house is in the front yard. and of course, the man who built the tree house says he found out after the fact that he needed a permit from one of the county departments and unfortunately, they are saying

supplements. taking multivitamins, vitamin b6, folic acid, iron, magnesium, and copper was associated with increased risk of death. >> they are able to tell us that, you know, use with multivitamins increase the relative risk of 2.4%. >> the association was strongest when it came to taking iron. researchers also found taking calcium supplements appears to reduce risk of death. >> according to the centers for disease control and prevention, more than half of u.s. adults take at least one supplement daily and that number is increasing as we look for ways to stay healthy. >> it's important to know what you are taking because too much of a good thing is harmful. >> you aren't doing yourself any good by over taking supplements. >> eating right is the best way to absorb the minerals and vitamins you need. >> what should remake of all this? registered dietitian at shady

grove hospital, an expert on nutrition is here to tell us. should we be ditching our multivitamins? >> i wouldn't ditch your multivitamins right away. i think you need to look at on an individual basis with what you do. one of the things that we do find in the hospital is some people are taking multivitamins and then they have multiple things that they take. and when you see what they take, they have duplicates of several things and the picture ends up with too much of one mineral. >> that makes sense. >> in this particular case, they talked about iron. >> you can over dose on iron. with all minerals, the key is moderation. if you get too little of iron, you are tired, out of breath. no energy for anything. too much and you are storing it in your oregons and all this great process going on.

you want to be in the middle. >> a multilevel is a safe level? >> yes. what they do say in this particular study, they are looking at post menopausal women. the amount of iron drops considerably. it's less than half of what you needed before when you are menstruating. but calcium needs to be taking that. women need to take calcium and vitamin d. >> yes. especially when they are over 50. you need to be taking 1200 milligrams and you have to break it up in the day. if you can have some as a dairy product, that's great. that will give you 300 milligrams. but then the most you can absorb at one time is 500 milligrams. you don't want to take a giant pill and be done for the day. >> really good advice. thank you so much for joining us with insight on this. derek, back to you. >> thanks anita. the office of earl bradley, the former delaware pediatrician convicted of sexual abuse is now being demolished.

with that killing. she'll be going on trial later this month. andrea mccarren traveled to houston to talk to jayna's parents to talk to her parents. andrea. >> what an amazing young woman to. describe jayna murray's life as remarkable seems like an under statement. not only was she working at lumulemon, she was finishing up two master's degrees at johns hopkins university. she was engaged to be married to a young man she met in middle school. her life was filled with adventure, happiness, and love. on march 11, brittany norwood killed jayna murray in a violent rage that left even veteran homicide detectives shaken. her parents told us what it was like to learn that an arrest had been made in their daughter's murder. >> my immediate reaction was, thank god. you know, thank god this person

is off the street. and then when he said who it was, i couldn't believe it. it was uncomprehensible. >> it was baffling. just stunning. >> tonight at 11:00, phyllis and david murray talk about that grief and the anger and what it's been like finding what they call the new normal of their lives. >> you know, we just saw how troubling trials can be for family members in the trial. how are the families of jayna murray? how are they feeling about the upcoming trial? >> they are bracing themselves. however, they have an incredible faith in the justice suspect. interestingly, they have compassion for brittany norwood's parents and jayna murray's father also told us another really compelling moment in our lengthy interview, he told us what he would say to his daughter's accused killer. that's coming up tonight at 11:00. >> thank you andrea. back to you in the studio.

>> investigators try to recreate what might have happened the day baby lisa irwin disappeared. they stage add break in and climbed through a window to see how a kidnapper might have entered the house and snatched lisa from her crib without anybody knowing it. the ten month old has been missing for a week. police would only say the detectives are pursuing leads, but they are at mercy of the next good idea. there's been intense media focus on the search for that little baby. there are thousands of other missing kids cases that fail to capture the nation's attention. susan has that story of one of those children. >> eight month old jayden davis never met his brother. he disappeared at his home last february. >> we picked the crib up, we looked inside the dryer and see no sign of him. >> police launched a massive

search, but even with the offer of a $20,000 reward, joshua has yet to be found. what is more, his family says they are frustrated by the amount of media coverage their story has received, especially when compared to similar cases, like that of missing missouri toddler, lisa irwin. >> it makes me mad that we are barely getting national media coverage. >> joshua's case isn't unique. of the thousands of missing children reported each year, only a select few receive a heightened level of coverage. experts say each of those cases often meet a certain criteria. >> media looks first at whether the case is sensational. if there's an indication that a family member may be involved. media doesn't want to cover it. >> police officials said they don't believe joshua's parents were involved in his disappearance. eight months after he went missing, joshua's family feels the case deserves more

attention. >> why don't we have that coverage? why isn't our case become looked at the same way? >> it's an innocent, helpless child that wants to be home. >> and until new information is discovered, whether through police investigation or the media, little joshua's where abouts will remain a mystery. susan, cbs news, washington. listen to the statistic. 2,000 children are reported missing. and 65% are children in minority groups. in florida, seven family members are telling an amazing story of survival after their fishing boat capsized on rough seas. it happened saturday off the florida keys. an 80-year-old woman was killed. three other women and a child clung to a water cooler and treaded water for 20 hours. three of the men were able to stay with the boat. a commercial boater found them early sunday morning.

rescuers later found the woman and child. >> newly released surveillance video showed the plane skidding off the end of the runway in the rain. it happened in chicago back in april. the flight was coming from denver when it ended up off the runway in the mud. nobody was hurt, we're told, the national transportation safety board still investigating on just how all this happened. >> you only have until 6:00 p.m. to get a taste of the taste of d.c. that event along pennsylvania avenue features dishes from more than 80 of the city's top restaurants and food trucks. also a beer garden and live entertainment. a portion of the proceeds goes to the d.c. central kitchen. the american red cross, and bread for the city. the u.s. sailboat show wraps up today. that's in annapolis and the event attracts as many as 50,000 boating fans from all over the world right down to the annapolis water front. now as the sailboat show comes to a close, preparations are being made for the u.s. power boat show. both events are some of the oldest and largest boat shows

>> there you go. let's move on to lucky, the cow. lucky won't know how lucky she is. this pregnant cow fell through a wooden well cover near boulder, colorado, over the weekend. so what do the rescuers do? they use fire hoses to pull her up with a crane. a vet checked her out and says lucky and her calf appear to be okay despite the fall. >> check this out. this is what you would expect to find in a swimming pool. a moose went swimming over the weekend. >> that is not sexy. >> authorities are able to pull the animal out of the water. fish and game officials say it's not uncommon to see moose wander into unfamiliar places during breeding season. >> you have to think the moose could have gotten out of there on his own. >> look. >> that doesn't look good. >> he doesn't want to come out of the pool, that's the problem. it's not that he can't come out, he doesn't want to. if you're looking for a job, this could be your time of year. we'll tell you which major retealers are expected to hire

>> and netflix has abandoned plans to split dvd. a few weeks ago, there was a big uproar when the company said it would rename its mail service. that decision comes after customers complained bitter whether ly they didn't want to manage two accounts. shares rose after the change was announced. and u.s. job figures rose in septemberjust enough to temper fears of a new recession. now the national retail federation forecasts a hiring boom over the next couple of months. the trade association expects retailers will have hundreds of thousands of new jobs to fill during the holiday shopping season. >> business picked up at christine's gift shop in manassas, virginia. >> i expect things are going to continue to improve and i expect this christmas will be better than last year's. >> add four temporary workers over the holiday rush when her clientele tripled.

>> have more people in the store. people who need help out on the floor. i want to make sure the customer service is what they expect and they get the attention they deserve. >> retail industry is out performed others, adding jobs at a time when many sectors are struggling. holiday sales are expected to rise about 3% this year and retailers plan to hire up to 500,000 seasonal workers. that's roughly the same amount as last year, even though the economy still faces some tough head winds. >> unemployment. consumer confidence. the stock market. the housing market. the debt crisis. all of those factors are continuing to swirl as the holiday season unfolds and that's going to dampen spending. >> stores will use strong sale promotions and keep inventory levels low in the face of this consumer uncertainty. macy's plans to hire 78,000 temporary workers, a 4% increase over last year. khol's says they are up 40%.
