jfk airport in new york two weeks ago and he appeared in court tuesday. the other man is still at large in iran. president obama calls the plot a flagrant violation of u.s. and international law. but iran denies the accusations calling them false and baseless. >> the united states is committed to holing iran accountable for its actions. >> officials have imposed new sanctions against tehran and the state department is hoping other nations will join the u.s. in pressuring a country it sees as a growing threat. susan mcginnis for cbs news, washington. prince george's county police have arrested ed a woman for allegedly stabbing and wounding a woman outside a mcdonald. antoinette starks walked out of a shopper's supermarket with a pack of knives. according to police, stabbed a woman next door outside the target. the 39-year-old woman who was stabbed is listed in stable

condition. starks is charged with first and second degree attempted murder. first and second degree assault and assault with a deadly weapon. records in 9news now's archives show this isn't the first time starks was charged with a stabbing attack. in 2005, starks went on a stabbing rampage at the nordstrom's in the westfield montgomery mall. according to court documents, starks was found not criminally responsible and ordered into a mental institution. she was released on august 11th. montgomery county police are asking for your help finding a missing 18-year-old man. hasan larry ross was last seen at his home on 11th avenue near university boulevard in silver spring. voss a black man, 5'6" and weighs 135 pounds. family and police are concerned for his welfare because mr. ross functions at the level of a 10-year-old. anyone with information regarding mr. ross's

whereabouts is asked to contact the montgomery county police at 301-279-8000. >> protestors who are antiwar and antiwall street are settling into d.c. for a long haul campaign. >> they worked out a deal that allows them to stay at freedom plaza through december 30th. the protestors are convinced their numbers will keep growing until the nation starts changing in their words, for the better. yesterday, hundreds of them tried to unfurl manners inside the hart senate office building but capital police ordered them out of the atrium. officers arrested a handful who refused to move. the president obama says the fight over his jobs bill isn't over yet. senate republicans and democrats voted to block the $447 billion package in a procedural move. the president is promising to work with senate democratic leaders to make sure individual elements of the bill get a vote as soon as possible. this afternoon, office cleaners from across the d.c.

region will hold a rally at farragut square as they prepare for a possible strike. roughly 12,000 office cleaners are threatening to strike when their contract expires at midnight sunday. they're asking for wage increases, less staffing cuts and healthcare benefits for more workers. cleaning companies which employ the workers, say they're struggling because of the weak economy. republican presidential hopefuls are blaming the government for failing to jump start the struggling economy. the candidates faced off last night at a debate in new hampshire. >> they took jabs at president obama and current front-runner mitt romney hours before the debate, romney picked up a key endorsement from chris christie. randall pinkston has more. >> i'll tell you -- >> reporter: all eye were on mitt romney, the front-runner. in a debate from bloomberg television and "the washington post" tuesday night, romney's

money here in new hampshire after losing the g.o.p. presidential primary in 2008. stakes were high for perry who has plunged in the polls after weak debate performances. >> had six years to be working on a plan. i've been in this for about eight weeks. >> romney picked up a key endorsement from chris christie. that could lead to more campaign cash as the g.o.p. race inches closer to first contests. randall pinkston, hanover, new hampshire. >> in virginia, the race between the g.o.p. candidates has slipped over the last month. a new quin yak poll shows romney and cain are in a dead heat. rick perry was in the lead in the commonwealth but his support fell from 25% to just 11% in the latest poll. both g.o.p. and democratic lawmakers from maryland are angry at a new redistricting plan for the state. if approved, it would add a

portion of montgomery county to western district which is a g.o.p. stronghold represented by roscoe bartlett. >> maryland congresswoman donna edwards is the latest lawmaker to speak out against the proposed boundaries. edwards represents voters in montgomery and prince george's county. the change could make bartlett's seat more competitive for a democratic challenger. edwards says the shift would leave minorities underrepresented. >> edwards released a statement that reads "i understand and share the political interests that are at stake both nationally and in our state. nonetheless, i cannot support this plan in its current form, given that minority representation interests appear to have been sacrificed for these political interests." governor martin o'malley will submit the redistricting plan to the general assembly for a special session next week. here is a look at other stories making news now. federal prosecutors open their case against the accused terrorist they call the underwear bomber. abdul mutallab is accused of

trying to blow up a detroit bound flight in 2009 on christmas day. the 24-year-old was determined to kill all 300 people on board his flight when he allegedly went into the bathroom and ignited a bomb hidden in his underwear. the trial is expected to last a month. lawyers for a gaithersburg man being held in the case of a frederick woman missing in aruba plan to ask an arube an court to immediately release giordano. police have detained him since august in the presumed death of robyn gardner. he says she was swept out to sea when they were snorking. >> more than six million people could soon lose their unemployment benefits. at 4:49, taking vitamin e could increase your risk of developing a deadly cancer. we're back with your weather first in two minutes. you're watching 9news now.

4:40 on this wet wednesday morning. lots of showers out there. not raining everywhere all the time today but many chances for showers, maybe a rumble of thunder. temperatures will be barely moving through the mid and possibly upper 60s and the winds brisk at times northeast to east at 10 to 15 miles per hour. i'll be back with live doppler 9000 hd and a look toward the weekend. monika samtani has the latest on some incidents going on this morning. >> that's right, howard. we're taking a look live at the westbound side of route 50. beyond the sign, delays off and on from this point to the bay bridge span where an early morning accident is in its clearing stages but still causing some delays. i'll have more on this at 4:48.

surae, back to you. it is time for the first "your money" report of the morning. here are today's headlines. a big setback for the european bailout fund. lawmakers in slovakia rejected a plan to boost the size and power of the fund. that could delay access to money that could help ease the debt crisis. alcoa says quarterly profits missed wall street's estimates. on wall street, the numbers are mixed. the dow lost almost 16 points to nasdaq was up about 17 and the s&p 500 closed up nearly a point. more than six million americans could lose their unemployment benefits next year if congress doesn't act soon. the unemployment extension is part of the presidential obama's jobs bill. experts say even if the bill is voted down in congress, it is possible the unemployment extension could be separated and sent through on its own before the end of the year. a local union outside

detroit has rejected a contract agreement between ford and the united autoworkers. union members are angry the contract doesn't give back some things they lost in previous agreements including annual raises. they're also mad about ford's ceo mullally's $26.5 million pay package last year. soaring costs go to dulles. >> metro silver line extension in loudoun county is going to cost at least $100 million more. we'll have that and much more when we come back.

good morning and welcome back to 9news now. 4:44, wednesday morning and it is going to be a wet wednesday in our area. >> yeah, it is going to be. already raining in spots. that rain will be on and off most of the day through tonight as well. got a couple more chances for thursday into friday. but the weekend, the weekend looks good. weather is going to cooperate for that. today, not the outdoors day. probably an indoor recess for the kids as well. here is a look at our bus stop forecast. i am completely in the wrong -- i have to fast forward. here is a quick preview of the seven-day forecast. all right, now we'll get moving. there is the bus stop forecast. good job, audio with the tone

there. we've got a cool, damp start. 58 to 66. sunrise not until 7:14. couple of different things to work out with the computer. i was in the wrong one. all right, a little inside baseball for you. the day planner, 8:00 a.m., 64 degrees with the rain northeast at 13 miles per hour and the winds have become easterly midday here. still, 64, 65. temperatures with this sort of environment, we've got the brisk winds, the rain falling. temperatures don't budge. the sun is a lot lower than in summertime. 65 at 4:00. at 8:00 tonight, still a threat for a shower or storm. temperatures holding in the mid- 60s. we've been watching the moisture come up from the south to the north. had a couple of sprinkles yesterday but certainly the radars have become much more active. in pennsylvania, down to west virginia and out to the west, seeing a lot more yellow. off to the south, picking up the yellow. more moderate rains are starting to come toward us from

virginia. you can see lots of breaks up toward hagerstown. fairfax county out toward warrenton down through manassas and quantico as well down 95 with spotsylvania and fredericksburg and western charles county. even in and around annapolis. we'll focus down south a little bit because what we've been watching in this area for woodbridge, through just west of marbury to welcome, this has been some of the heaviest showers we've been seeing. all of this lifting off toward the north. this extends down into the northern neck of virginia. you can see more yellow around readsville and newland. this is all tracking up toward st. mary county. just getting in toward areas of western st. mary, calvert, charles, more rain moving up from the south here in the next 20 to 30 minutes. don't expect a dry commute by any stretch anywhere this morning with the threat for showers. temps are 64 in town. warm spots are down east. we've got 68 at the tappahannock airport.

in the upper 50s in the shenandoah valley this morning. here in town with that 65, we've got light rain and a brisk east-northeast wind. 13 miles per hour. look at that dew point. like yesterday and the day before, the storm system which has been coming up from florida now. now, it is spinning the upper part of the storm here in the ohio valley. still tropical moisture trying to feed into it. look at the showers and storms extending down toward charleston in through georgia. this will have to track north and east through us. through the early part if not the mid part of the afternoon, a better chance of showers than perhaps later today. clearly, an unsettled day ahead. another disturbance behind that will give us a chance for showers as we head into thursday night and friday morning. so, got a couple of systems we'll be watching. once this gets through us, the weekend looks good. today, 67. rain, on and off. more on than off. early showers. a few showers around friday. 68. then your weekend looks better.

60s on saturday. low 70s sunday. we'll keep it going through monday as well. monika? >> thank you so much, howard. we've been on the phones with the folks over at the bay bridge and they tell us about 10 minutes ago, the accident that happened at about 3:20 this morning was cleared to the side of the road. this is what it looks like at kent narrows looking much better. let's take a closer look on the east side of the bay bridge span and show you what it looks like. you'll see traffic is still heavy. it is getting through with most of the lanes open at the accident scene. three vehicles and a tractor trailer involved so it took awhile to figure everything out and get the paperwork done and get it moved out of the roadway. now, we'll take a look on the other side of the bay bridge. once you're past the bridge span, you'll be ok heading in toward annapolis. let's go closer into town on the inner loop of the beltway, the barrels were moved to the side of the road. all construction cleared up from connecticut avenue over to georgia avenue. coming up in my next report, we'll take a peek into virginia at 4:56. andrea? >> thank you, monika.

$137 million is what metro says it will cost to start the metro extension to dulles airport or the silver line. "the washington examiner" says that number includes hiring and training workers to run the trains, clean the stations and fix the escalators. the metropolitan authority is in charge of running the lane from east falls church into loudoun county. the price tag for building the line now sits at $6 billion. funding future transportation projects in maryland could lead to a higher gas tax and higher vehicle registration fees. the money would help fund $800 million a year in new money for transportation projects. the state's blue ribbon commission on transportation funding plans to wait until after the general assembly's special legislative session on october 25th. before they make a final decision on funding options. you know for years,

scientists have been studying the potential benefits of taking vitamin e and the mineral sill enium for prostate cancer. >> now a new study suggests too much vitamin e could put men at risk for the disease. sandra hughes has more from los angeles. >> ralph sanderson decided to be an experiment to see whether vitamin e could prevent him from getting prostate cancer. he was healthy and had no family history of the disease. >> i had a couple of friends who had prostate cancer and i thought this would be worth doing. >> now, new findings show the vitamin e sanderson took has put him at a higher risk for the disease. >> men who took vitamin e alone were at a 17% increased risk of developing prostate cancer. >> the study looked at about 35,000 healthy men who took vitamin e, the mineral selenium or a placebo. >> we don't know why men who took vitamin e are at higher risk of getting prostate cancer. interestingly, men who took

selenium and vitamin e were not at higher risk so there must be interesting biology there yet. >> the daily dose of vitamin e was much more than found in over-the-counter multivitamins. sanderson, now 68 is in good health and has no regrets participating in the research. >> i feel as though we did learn something. >> researchers will continue to follow the men in the study to see whether their cancer risk decreases over time. sandra hughes, cbs news, los angeles. the clinical trial also shows no benefits from taking vitamin e or selenium when it comes to lung, colorectal cancer or cardiovascular disease. >> fruits and vegetables may be able to alter dangerous genes in your body. researchers followed people who carry a gene known to increase the risk of heart disease. people who ate generous amounts of fruit and raw veggies were able to weaken the gene's effect. new research finds pregnant women who take folic acid supplements can reduce the risk

corner. i'll update you on an early morning accident on the bay bridge. back to you, andrea. >> thank you, monica. >> this morning, frank is being remembered as a pioneer of the gay rights movement. he entered the movement after he was fired from his job as a government astronomer in 1957 for being homosexual. in 1965, camny was the first to stage a gay rights protest in front of the white house and later at the pentagon. signs as well as buttons and levolets from the protests are now housed at the smithsonian's national museum of american history. frank kameny was 86 years old. this sunday, the martin luther king jr. memorial will officially be dedicated on the national mall. the original ceremony you'll remember was postponed in late august because of hurricane irene. president obama will deliver the keynote address and aretha franklin will head line a long list of entertainers. it is first dedicated to a black person on the national mall. the best aquarium in the country is right in our

backyard. according to coastal living magazine's list of the top ten aquariums, number one is the national aquarium in baltimore followed by the one in monterey bay in california. seaworld in san diego, the shedd in chicago and moody gardens in galveston, texas, round out the top list. you can see the rest of the list at wusa9.com. one of the world's most famous clock towers is starting to tilt. big ben in london is a hole 18 inches out of line. look at that. surveyors say it will be another 4,000 years before big ben's tilt matches italy's famous leaning tower of pisa. it has been slightly offcenter since it was built in the 18th century. work on the underground rail system is contributing to that shift. can't really see it there. >> wow. >> tilting. >> 4,000 years. it will be ok. police raid a movie set full of big hollywood stars.

>> nominations for the american music awards are out. sandra hughes has all of the latest from hollywood. >> reporter: the zombie movie world war z starring brad pitt got a shipment of weapons are real ammunition according to authorities in hungary. police raided the set and took 85 weapons away including machine guns, pistols. the guns arrived from london on saturday bound for the movie set. a publicist for the film said they're cooperating with police. ♪ i like it in the city >> adele seems to have it all. this year's most popular album 21 and now she's the most nominated singer for this year's american music awards. taylor swift, lady gaga and katy perry trail her for nominations but all three are up for artist of the year with adele. the american music awards will be given out on november 20th at l.a.'s nokia theatre. for those of you anticipating a first look at robert downey jr.'s new film, the waiting is over!
