down now. we've got the wet leaves on the wet roads making it slippery. it will be wet on and off most of the day into tonight. here is a look at your day planner. right now, we're 65. i don't really expect much movement today. maybe a couple 3, 4 degrees either direction. mid to upper 60s for highs with the 5:00 p.m. temperature still 65. there may be a passing thunderstorm later today. seeing some thunder down in the carolinas this morning. all the way west of raleigh toward columbia and this is all moving off toward the north and the east with the upper storm off to the west. locally, live doppler 9000 hd, you see waves of showers to our north and east. one across the metro right now and one to our south. all lifting off toward the north but that activity into montgomery county coming out of fairfax county is going to give you wet streets over toward potomac approaching

gaithersburg and germantown. annapolis seeing the showers. southern maryland, down to the northern neck headed your way shortly. temperatures are running around 60 in the shenandoah valley. mid-60s here in the metro. upper 60s down in the northern neck and southern maryland. monika is stepping in. it has been a busy morning early. >> definitely to the east side of town, howard. that's why i'm keeping it at yellow, not only because of an early morning accident at the bay bridge but also as howard said, with the rain and leaves as well out on the roads. let's take a look first of all on the bay bridge. on the westbound span, there were three vehicles. it was cleared about half an hour ago but did lea some delays on the westbound. eastbound you're ok leaving annapolis. now taking a look at duke street, no problems here. from springfield right up to the 14th street bridge, you'll be ok this morning. let's go over to the beltway in tysons corner. no problems at route 7 as we travel on the west side between the american legion bridge and 66, you'll be ok.

if you're planning to take the trains this morning, there are no problems on metro, vre or marc. everything is running on time. coming up, we'll take a look into the district at 5:09. andrea and surae. >> an international murder-for- hire plot planned to go down right here in our nation's capital. an iranian-born u.s. citizen is in a new york jail this morning. >> he's accused of plotting to kill saudi arabia's ambassador to the u.s. with a bomb in a d.c. restaurant. kristin fisher joins us live from the saudi arabian embassy. >> it is surprisingly quiet out here outside the saudi arabian embassy awn day after all of this news broke. this is the official complaint from the justice department and it names two defendants. one is in custody. the other, a member of iranian special operations unit is still at large likely in iran. the man in custody is 56-year-

old manssor arbabsiar. he hired a hitman that he believed worked for a mexican drug cartel. he was an informant. he was arrested in jfk on september 29th. not only has he confessed, he's already identified iranian officials. both men were charged in new york federal court on conspiring to kill the saudi ambassador to the u.s. so far, iran has denied all of the charges. >> this conspiracy was conceived, was sponsor and directed from iran and constitutes a flagrant violation of u.s. and international law. >> kind of action which violates international norms, must be ended. >> reporter: secretary of state hillary clinton is calling for what she calls a chorus of international condemnation of iran. she and other senior state officials will be calling on countries to enforce existing sanctions and possibly

implement new ones in the days and weeks to come. surae, andrea? >> kristin, we talk about that this was going to happen at a d.c. restaurant. do we have any idea which restaurant was being targeted? >> reporter: that is a question that so many washingtonians want to know. it is a question we'll likely learn an answer to in the next few days or weeks. it is not listed in this official complaint. what the complaint does say is that this informant -- excuse me, the iranian in contact with the d.e.a. informant said he was trying to target a restaurant the saudi ambassador frequented twice a week. when he was told it was a restaurant frequented by senators and casualties could be widespread, that iranian then allegedly told the informant that he didn't care so the possibility if this were to go through that there would be mass casualties here on u.s. soil, possibly caused by the

iranian government, just has huge implications for all of the governments going forward. they vary in an interesting situation we'll watch unfold during the days and weeks to come. the woman accused of stabbing a stranger outside a target store yesterday has apparently done this before. surveillance video from the mitchellville target shows the woman wearing a black hoody. police say she is antoinette starks and that after her credit card didn't clear, she ran out of the store with a pack of knives and stabbed a woman several times in the torso. the victim is hospitalized in stable condition. records show starks was found not criminally responsible for a 2005 attack at the nordstrom in westfield montgomery mall and order into a mental institution. the tuesday evening commute was frightening for thousands of metro riders. it started when a man jumped on to the tracks at the clarendon station. he was struck and seriously

injured by a train. now, that forced outbound orange line trains to unload all passengers at rosslyn and put them on buses but the rosslyn station became so overloaded, causing more panic when the escalator shut down. some passengers got overheated walking up to the street level. the republican presidential hopefuls debated last night in new hampshire. this bloomberg "washington post" sponsored forum focused on the economy and jobs. >> can you name all 59 points in your 160-page plan? >> the american people in the kind of financial crisis they're in, they need someone who knows how to create jobs and i do. >> we've got to get our spending house in order. >> they want to really change things, the first person to fire is bernanke who is a disaster as chairman of the federal reserve. second person to fire is geithner. >> now, new hampshire holds the nation's first primary in january. former massachusetts governor mitt romney holds a wide lead in state polls. it is 5:06.

time for the latest "your money" report of the morning. jessica doyle is off today. this morning, the major asian markets were mixed, some closing up slightly. others lost a few points. the dow fell almost 17 points to 11,416. when the nasdaq and s&p posted modest gains in tuesday's trading. president obama's plan to create jobs failed a procedural but key vote in the senate yesterday. every republican and some democrats voted against it. >> why would you support a approach that we already know won't work. >> most who voted against the bill balked at the plan's tax hikes. president obama says he's ready to try a new way to get it passed by breaking the legislation up into individual parts. facebook has finally released its app for apple'sipad.

the application showcases many familiar facebook features integrating gestures and swipes to help users navigate the social network. the delay has been the subject of internet rumors including a possible rift between facebook ceo mark zuckerberg and apple executives. others claimed facebook preferred a web-based application that bypassed apple's strict app store rules. if you use a blackberry, be happy you're in the u.s. for a third straight day, blackberry users in other parts of the world are experiencing messaging and browsing problems. the problems first surfaced monday in europe, the middle east and africa then spread to latin america and india yesterday. the issue seems to be a core switch failure. there are no reports of any problems in the united states. it is 5:08. the man who took over for osama bin laden issues a new video. >> police a pacific hurricane made landfall in mexico overnight. >> ahead in sports, the redskins try to improve their

constitution avenue along the mall. no problems on the potomac and anacostia river crossing. we'll take a look into maryland at 5:18. andrea, back to you. making news now at 5:11, the man who took over for osama bin laden as leader of al-qaeda has released a new video. in the 13-minute speech, iamin is a native of egypt. the gaithersburg man suspected in the disappearance of his travel companion in aruba is appealing his detention. police jailed gary giordano in august after the presumed death of robyn gardner of frederick, maryland. giordano says gardner vanished while they were snorkeling. hurricane jova made landfall along the west coast of mexico. the storm churned up choppy waves which destroyed some beachfront property. rainfall totals could exceed one foot in the hardest hit

welcome back, everybody, on this rainy, soggy wednesday. we're going to try to stay dry. >> recycled for water. that's a good thing. >> we've been liking the forecast lately. >> we had a nice -- about a week of nice weather. the weekend is coming. if you've got some plans or want to go maybe to the pumpkin patch or apple picking, weather will cooperate for that as well. get rid of the rain before the end of the week. here we go though, this morning, the bus stop forecast, showers out there. some are light. some are not so light. temps running from the upper 50s out to the west in the shenandoah valley. mid-60s, even upper 60s down south. sunrise today, 7:14. our day planner has the threat for showers on and off all day.

temperatures barely moving through the mid and upper 60s for highs. winds northeast to east at about 10 to 15 miles per hour. by 8:00 tonight, we're still in the mid-60s. still with a threat for a couple of showers, even a rumble of thunder around thanks to the storm system coming up in florida earlier in the week. a little tropical moisture involved. some of the downpours on the hefty side. plenty of breaks down across southern virginia and more hefty showers west of raleigh and a few new ones east of raleigh coming up 95 a little bit later. waves of rain here from southern pennsylvania just north of us and now just south of us. the showers that were in fairfax and loudoun have moved up into montgomery county over toward howard and parts of prince george's county and anne arundel counties. light and darker greens. these are some light to moderate showers. nothing too heavy. certainly enough to make the commute down 270 west coming down 95 from columbia this morning, it will be wet. same story coming down 89.

you're going to run into some wet roads. in bethesda at northwest, some lighter showers. we'll move off toward the south and the west. looking over toward -- heavier showers here. these are the guys just about to move back into southern fairfax county. quantico, all of the areas in fauquier and stafford county looking at some of the heavier showers. this goes down toward spotsylvania. coming out of the northern neck, we noticed south of colonial beach, also toward st. mary city. all listed north. st. mary's and charles county. get ready for more wet weather and waves. temperatures not too bad. mid-60s in town. upper 60s south. the 50s still holding on across the shenandoah valley. oakland, the cool spot at 3,000 feet at 50. 65, light rain. east-northeast wind at 16 with the dew points in the low 60s this morning. that storm system, bigger picture of it spinning across ohio and pennsylvania and notice the showers coming out

deeper, outside of the giants game, it has been a lot of sketchy offense. remember a couple of monday nights ago, dallas gave them a game and they didn't take it. just 16 points against the cardinals. redskins were an abysmal 2-7 in the red zone. putrid is the word that comes to mind so the marching orders for the offense this week, simple! >> we gotta score. we gotta eat up the clock and score. in the past, we've made mistakes on offense. we've given the offense a lot of chances to go out there and play. we can't do that this week. >> they can lose six games in a row and come out and still beat us. you can't sleep on a team like philly. >> no, you certainly can't do that. a lot of changes in college park, for example, a month ago, danny o'brien looked like he was about to blow up nationally in a good way. he's just blown up. four performances in the past few weeks has been fighting for his job with c.j. brown. neither was made available to the media. thanks a lot, maryland. teammates had to answer to reporters. they said they supported both.

the 14th street bridge. look at that, the capitol and all of the areas near the washington monument. let's go back over to the maps and this time, we're going to zoom into 66. no problems from manassas through centreville. everything is fine here. in fact, we'll take a live look at 66 in centreville. we're look good all the way into vienna and a quick look at your travel times, northbound 295, no problems from the beltway to the 11th street bridge. 66 in from 7100 is 11 minutes. 495 to 270 is 10 minutes right now. we'll take a look at an accident in silver spring at 5:39. back to you guys. >> demonstrators get final approval to set up a semipermanent camp at freedom plaza. >> the stop the machine protest began last thursday to coincide with the ten-year anniversary of the start of the war in afghanistan. their original permit expired monday but protest organizers have finalized a deal with the national park service. it will allow the demonstrators

to remain in the plaza through december 30th. >> a string of bombings in baghdad targeted iraqi police officers, 14 people are reported dead and at least 60 more wounded. the attacks raised more questions about whether iraqi police can effectively secure baghdad once u.s. combat forces leave at the end of the year. federal authorities say the government of iran was behind a plot to assassinate saudi arabia's ambassador and the assassination was to have taken place here in washington, d.c. with a bombing that could have killed dozens of innocent people. 9news now reporter kristin fisher is outside the saudi embassy in northwest with more. good morning, kristin. >> good morning, andrea. the plan was to kill the saudi ambassador to the u.s. by bombing one of his favorite d.c. restaurants. now which restaurant exactly, we still don't know but what we do know is that mass casualties were accessible. the iranian defendants were willing to take out innocent civilians if that's what it

took to get the saudi ambassador to the u.s. here's the director speaking at yesterday's press conference. >> these individuals had no regard for their intended victim. no regard for innocent citizens who might have been hurt or killed in this attempted assassination. >> the justice department says the assassination attempt that was planned to go down at that saudi ambassador's favorite restaurant was a restaurant he ate at about two times a week. the defendants thought they had hired a hitman from a mexican drug cartel to do the job but really it was an informant for the d.e.a. who later spilled the beans. one of the defendants is in custody in new york. 56-year-old arbabsiar. the other is a member of the special operations unit. he's still at large. both are charged with conspiracy to kill the saudi ambassador to the u.s. so far, iran has denied the charges. andrea? >> thank you, kristin fisher outside the saudi embassy.

>> friends of a gaithersburg man who died mysteriously on the tracks want to know if he was the victim of foul play. 37-year-old benoit's body was found on the tracks on october 1st. metro investigators say everything points to it being an accident but friends say there's too much about the case which just doesn't make sense. >> adding a little more anxiety to the whole situation. >> we want to know what happened and just that there was no foul play involved. >> the 37-year-old chockco had taped an unreleased episode of who wants to be a millionaire in the weeks before he died. he was a quiz show whiz and also a highly regarded biochemist. a pioneer of the gay rights movement has died. frank kameny was fired as a government astronomer for being a homosexual. in 1965, kameny became the

first to stage gay rights protests in front of the white house and the pentagon. signs as well as buttons from and levolets are now housed at the smithsonian's national museum of american history. frank was 86 years old. d.c. mayor vincent gray's office is organizing a rally and march to advocate for full representation in congress. full democracy for d.c. will take place saturday and protestors plan to march from freedom plaza to the martin luther king jr. memorial. that memorial which is the first monument on the national mall to honor a black person, will be dedicated this sunday. the original ceremony in late august was postponed because of hurricane irene. president obama will deliver the keynote address. other speakers include congressman john lies and members of the king family. >> time for another "your money" report. jessica doyle is off today. the justice department wants to take a closer look at a deal

that would allow us airways to expand its flights. it wants to trade 132 daily landing rights in la guardia to delta. in exchange, us airways would get 42 such rights at national from delta. the justice department has determined the la guardia portion does not raise antitrust concerns but it wants to keep investigating the reagan portion even though the transportation department granted final approval yesterday. a popular jogging stroller is being recalled because of concerns about choking. the consumer product safety commission says the backing of the embroidered logo patch on the bob canopy can come loose. the commission has received six reports of children putting the backing in their mouths. sony says it has detected a large number of unauthorized attempts to access user accounts on its playstation network and other online entertainment services. the tokyo-based company has temporarily locked about 93,000 accounts and sent e-mail

good morning. welcome back to 9news now. 5:46. it is a struggle for howard to get through the forecast. >> i'm working it. >> getting through the rain and everything. >> maybe it is wednesday. i don't know. >> got the wednesday blues, people. >> i feel it. >> we're going to get through it together. one way or another. this morning, getting ready for the bus, grab the rain gear. it is not raining everywhere. a lot of the rain is the light variety. it is damp outside. our bus stop forecast has the showers around. cool and damp, temps from the upper 50s to mid-60s. sunrise not until 7:14 this morning and sets about 6:35 this afternoon. the threat for showers, maybe some thunder will be with us

all day as temperatures get into the mid-60s. even upper 60s for highs. 5:00 p.m. temperature around 65. yesterday, we did manage to get into the lower 70s. winds northeast to east. 10 to 15-mile-per-hour range. it will be a little bit brisk at times. moisture has been coming up in waves. a lot of it is north of town and west of town. the heavy stuff through west virginia. you notice down here through roanoke going through north carolina, the line of yellows and oranges, that's a line of thunderstorms around the greensboro area. there is instability coming toward us later this morning into the afternoon. that's why we've got the threat for thunderstorms as well. looking at live doppler 9000 hd. relatively quiet in the immediate d.c. vicinity. to our northeast, some showers in and around baltimore, the eastern shore. lighter showers through montgomery county. these things are diminishing as they track up toward western howard. back south of 66 in toward manassas and warrenton and marshall and haymarket down toward quantico. lighter showers. then as we go down in toward
