the planet. >> i'm surae chinn. monika samtani will be back with timesaver traffic. >> i will. >> and we've got howard bernstein talking about the string of nice weather is gone. >> that's right. we've got some rain showers out there this morning. it won't rain all day. we've got the threat for showers on and off all day into this evening. maybe a few thunderstorms mixed in well. mid-60s at noon. mid-60s for the drive home. highs today only get into the upper 60s. showers coming in from the south to the north. heavier rains in pennsylvania out toward ohio and west virginia now. locally, live doppler 9000 hd, got a decent little break right in the immediate metro with scattered showers out to the west and to fauquier county, prince william down toward around colonial beach into dahlgren. we'll watch this lift north of us. later this afternoon with a little bit more heat than we've got now only in the upper 60s. we're currently 64 in town with upper 50s up toward frederick and the shenandoah valley. monika samtani has been a busy lady in the traffic center.

>> it has been busy for a wednesday morning. it is all due to the rain and the wet road conditions. let's take a look at the maps. on the beltway, we're fine. we'll zoom into 95. you've already got the slow traffic basically from the prince william parkway up to the occoquan river. then that stretch of volume between newington and springfield up ahead. we'll take a live look at 395 at edsall road. back over to the maps, and this time, let's zoom into the west side of town. you can see all of the yellow cars, once again, all of the slow traffic on the beltway as well. leaving the toll road toward 66 and inbound on 66 here, let's take a live look at the american legion bridge. if you're planning to leave bethesda, you'll be ok. you hit the brakes more closer toward 66. now, we'll take a look at your travel times. on the northbound side of 295, it will be a little slow for you. let's see if the map will switch. northbound 295 from the beltway to the 11th street bridge, you'll be ok. no problems on the outer loop leaving 95 in toward silver

spring. coming up in my next report, we'll take a look into the district at 6:11. andrea and surae? >> this definitely sounds like something out of a spy movie. one country plans on assassinating an official from a second country right here in the u.s. >> but uncle sam says this plot was a reality it stopped. iran was behind it, the target, the saudi ambassador to the united states here in washington. >> kristin fisher is live outside the embassy with more on these accusations. >> that's right. surprisingly quiet outside the saudi arabian embassy one day after news of this plot broke. this is actually the official complaint from the justice department and it names two defendants. one is in custody. the other allegedly a member of the iranian special operations unit is still at large, likely in iran. now, the man in custody is 56- year-old arbabsiar. he's an american and iranian

citizen accused of hiring a hitman he believed worked for a mexican drug cartel but the hitman was an informant for the d.e.a. he was arrested at jfk on september 29th. the justice department says since then, not only has he confessed, he's already identified iranian officials. those men were charged in new york federal court on conspiring to kill a foreign official. so far, iran has denied any of the charges. this conspiracy was conceived, sponsor and was directed from iran and constitutes a flagrant violation of u.s. international law. >> this kind of action which violates international norms must be ended. >> secretary of state hillary clinton is now calling for what she calls a chorus of international condemnation of iran. she and other state -- senior state officials will be calling on countries to either enforce

existing sanctions and possibly implement new ones. this will likely have huge implications in the international community but it also had real consequences here in washington. afterall, the whole plot was to bomb one of the saudi arabian's favorite restaurants right here in washington. likely when several people were still inside. we'll talk about that coming up in half an hour at 6:30. andrea? >> kristin, a couple of weeks ago, we had a warning from the state department about americans traveling abroad and now another one. what does this travel alert say? >> this travel alert was issued just late last night by the state department and it is a worldwide travel alert for u.s. citizens. the idea behind it is that in the wake of this plot, there is a fear that the plot may indicate a renewed aggressive focus by the iranian government on more terroristic type activity, especially on

diplomats overseas. so, there is no concrete threat as of yet. just something to certainly be mindful of if you're planning on traveling overseas. andrea? >> kristin fisher reporting live from outside the saudi embassy in northwest washington. >> testimony resumes in a few hours in the terrorism trial against umar farouk abdul mutallab, a nigerian man charged with attempting to blow up a northwest airlines flight in 2009 using explosives in his underwear. yesterday, witnesses testified pandemonium ensued once abdul mutallab attempted to detonate the device. prosecutors told jurors the defendant openly admitted his alevening tunes al-qaeda after the botched attempt. the group's protesting the wars in afghanistan and iraq along with the economy can stay in the district through the year. the national park service approved a permit through december 30th. now, we're taking a live look outside of freedom plaza northwest washington. where they've been staying. the group, the october 6th

coalition got approval from the national parks service to stay. it is in charge of that square and the park service says the group will be asked to move on days other groups have permits to use the space. the occupy wall street movement in new york went uptown tuesday. activists said union members went on what they calmed a millionaires march. they went through some of the highest income neighborhoods of manhattan and they're upset that new york's so-called millionaire tax ends this december. at 6:06, a story you'll only see on channel 9, the parents of jayna murray are talking about their daughter's death. murray was kill inside the lululemon athletica store last march. police accuse her coworker brittany norwood. murray's parents spoke with our andrea mccarren. >> do you see -- do you think jayna would somehow forgive brittany norwood? >> it is hard to answer. i feel right now, yes, she

would absolutely forgive her. if she were on earth and if she had been injured, i think she would be struggling for good for right. >> to watch all of andrea's interview, tune into wusa9.com. police have not yet released the name of a man struck and killed by a car in prince george's county. it happened around 11:30 last night along montgomery road in beltsville. police responded to the call of a man injured and lying in the road. the man was taken to a local hospital where he died. just a few blocks away, police found the driver and car they say hit him. so far, no charges have been filed. jessica doyle is off today. we're still watching your money. we're only about seven weeks from thanksgiving. now is the time to buy that holiday plane ticket if you want to avoid paying too much. now, on average, tickets are about $40 more than last year.

here is a look at the average thanksgiving holiday airfares between the top 50 states as of -- cities rather as of right now on southwest. the ticket will cost you about $266. jetblue about $319. southwest, delta, united are all about $335. so, when should you buy your ticket? right now! our partners at "usa today" say last year, the average fare went up $100 between october 10th and november 19th. avoid the sunday after thanksgiving. it is busy and some airlines tack on a surcharge. other surcharge days coming up are december 22nd, 23rd, 26th and january 2nd. if you're taking a lot of carry-on luggage, this may be the time of year paying for an early boarding fee is definitely worth it. cheaper way to get around town using two wheels. a new city is joining capital bike share. alexandria city leaders voted to take part in the bike rental

terrorists are apparently targeting security forces this morning. >> it is one of the stories making news at 6:12. two suicide bombings after bombers went after police stations in baghdad this morning while a car bomb went off near another police station nearby. so far, no claims of responsibility. the university of california is trying to stop a mumps outbreak. students lined up on the berkeley campus yesterday to receive vaccinations. there are at least nine confirmed cases of muchs with another 35 under investigation. big ben is starting to lean. the tower which holds the famous clock is about a foot and a half off center. engineers fear if nothing is done, it could topple over in another 10,000 years. like the leaning tower of pisa. it is still up. they propped it up a little bit. >> the camera works over us. >> i did my lean. >> we could be about ten weeks out from the first caucus of primary votes in the 2012 presidential campaign.

the republican hopefuls took part in a debate last night in new hampshire. >> the focus of the debate, the economy. randall pinkston has this campaign 2012 from hanover, new hampshire. >> i'll tell you -- all eyes were on mitt romney, the front runner who outpulls g.o.p. presidential hopefuls. in a debate from bloomberg television and "the washington post" tuesday night, romney's rivals got a chance to disrupt his momentum. >> can you name all 59 points in your 160 page plan? >> the whole discussion around this campaign is going to be job creation. how can you win that debate given your background? >> the american people in the kind of financial crisis they're in, they need someone who knows how to create jobs. i do. >> the sit-down format was tightly scripted. the candidates repeated now familiar remedies and criticisms of the obama administration. >> we've got to get our spending house in order. >> they want to really change things, the first person to fire is bernanke who is a

through tysons corner as well. speaking about metro, i have a new map for you. it is a draft of the new look metro map. the site is called greatergreater washington.org. the map includes dash lines for rush hour service and it adds a little sub for the silver line to tysons corner and dulls airport. it also makes changes to station names, adding subtitles to others. metro's board will get its first official look at the map tomorrow. whatever the version, guys, that is approved, metro will begin rolling them out next summer. it has to update 2600 signs and 5,000 maps. we were discussing what do you think they should name it? i guess it will be the silver line. i don't think it matters. i think all commuters care about is that it is done. >> and it doesn't cost too much more. >> exactly. >> which the numbers are piling up on that. >> all right. thank you. >> thank you, monika. thousands of virginia commuters are hoping for a much easier morning.

the trip home last night was a mess. a guy jumped in front of a train at clarendon. police closed down the station meaning outbound orange line trains were terminating at rosslyn. blue line trains were delayed. the station couldn't handle the overflow rush hour crowds which led to the mayhem. when you get off in rosslyn, it was a sea of people. >> you were also up against the moving train as it was trying to leave. >> anybody going to stafford? that's where my vehicle is at. >> the escalators at rosslyn shut down because of the overload of people and those are the really long ones so people were starting to get overheated. normal service resumed by about 8:00 last night. the state department has issued a travel alert for americans overseas this morning. >> it is reminding them to be vigilant and it comes hours after the government says it stopped a plot by iran to kill the saudi arabian ambassador here in washington. >> kristin fisher is live outside the saudi embassy with

this twisted tale. >> reporter: good morning. the plan was to kill the saudi arabian ambassador by bombing his favorite d.c. restaurant while he was eating there. now, what we don't know is exactly which restaurant they were talking about. what we do know is that mass casualties were accessible. the iranian defendants were willing to kill innocent americans just to take out the saudi arabian ambassador to the u.s. take a listen to the fbi director at yesterday's press conference at the justice department. >> these individuals had no regard for their intended victim. no regard for innocent citizens who might have been hurt or killed. this attempted assassination. >> reporter: now, the justice department says the assassination attempt was planned to go down at one of the saudi ambassador's favorite restaurants and they describe it as a restaurant that he ate at about two times a week. the defendants thought they had hired a hit man from a mexican

humanity. >> president obama says he will now divide his $450 billion jobs bill into sections in order to get some of it passed. it stalled in the senate tuesday night. every republican along with two democrats voted to block a debate on the package. i guess if the economy improves, it might help president obama so they root for the economy to fail and post every effort to improve it. >> if voting against a stimulus is the way to get democrats to abandon the failed approach to job creation, then so be it. >> west virginia democrat joe manchin says he voted against the package but voted yes tuesday -- or he will vote against the package but voted tuesday in order to allow a debate. >> the district shaw neighborhood is one of 14 the president wants to put on the fast track. the news is being met with cautious optimism by many who live in the community. some fear many of the jobs will not go to the people living in the neighborhood.

right now, unemployment in the shaw neighborhood is around 11%. many in the community say they want to work but jobs are scarce. >> a lot of them come up to me and ask me is my job hiring, is my company hiring. i try to give them different leads. >> the president's plan will give quicker approval for projects of the sitting market at o street in the shaw community. the woman charged with stabbing a stranger outside of a target store has a history of violence. this is surveillance video moments before the stabbing in mitchellville. the woman you see in the black hoody is antoinette starks. investigators say she bolted out of the store with a pack of knives after her credit card was declined. she then allegedly stabbed a woman several times moments later. the victim survived but is in the hospital. records show starks was found not criminally responsible for 2005 attack at the nordstrom in westfield montgomery mall and ordered into a mental

institution. a health alert for women who take dietary supplements. some of those supplements can be linked to increased risk of an early death. that's according to the archives of internal medicine. it found women who took multivitamins, b6 pills, zinc and copper supplements died at higher rates than women who didn't take them. researchers believe this is more evidence that most supplements don't have health benefits for most women. you should talk burr doctor first before changing what you take. for men, a new link that high doses of vitamin e are linked to an increased risk of process state cancer. men who took it were 17% more likely to develop prostate cancer. guys, talk with your doctor before changing your routine. it is 6:38. howard says grab your rain gear because we'll have on and off showers through the day. up next, we look ahead at the

>> well, claude came to us about a year ago and shortly thereafter, he started telling bus a charity he had started in his hometown in mozambique. claude is one of those guys who a lot of people talk about changing the world, he looked at what needed to happen and he came up with a great idea to do so. you want to tell them about it? >> yes. i am a cofounder of the small community in my hometown. so, yes, we use art to teach children how to -- how they can grow up with education. >> tell you what, let's get started. we can talk more about your program and so the whole idea is to get dogs involved. and so you're going to help me out, right? we're going to paint mr. boss will it's paws. this is white paint.

you can pick any color you want? >> we would do this with your dog. >> so, just -- if your dog has really hairy paws, it will come up a little more abstract. so, mr. bosley, yeah, no, that's fine. you can notice from the three on the table, each one looks a little different. we want it to look like your dog's personality. we just lay it down. >> mr. bosley is blind by the way. blind art. >> so, you can see that is going to come up. >> not bad for the first try. >> if we lay it down again, it will have less paint on it. >> sorry, mr. bosley. >> he's abstract. >> folks can actually come into dog topia and they pay what? $10. >> $20 for the small one and $40 for the large. you can decide on the colors. we have a huge array of colors.

we wanted something that would incorporate rate what they're doing in mozambique with what we do with our dogs. where claudio came from, they have an h.i.v. rate at 40%. they're considered to be the highest nationally and so claude saw what happens is as a result, we've got a lot of displaced orphans whose parents have passed away. but the cycles continued because they also started the cattle herding project because a lot of the kids were being put to work in the fields so they're not being educated about h.i.v. andade which is continuing the cycle. they teach them art and recognize are iiation to end the cycle. >> terrific. thank you both so much from dog topia. great program to help those in need in south africa. a check of the news before you go is up next. stay with us.
