assassination plot. they say that the whole thing is a cynical attempt by the u.s. to distract attention from our own economic problems. anita? >> bruce leshan in the satellite center. thank you. well, a major turn of events today for the so-called underwear bomber. during the second day of the trial he changed the plea to guilty to all the counts against him including attempted murder and terrorism charges. umar farouk abdulmutallab admits that on christmas day 2009 he tried to bring down a northwest airlines flight from amsterdam to detroit with a bomb in his underwear. his stated motive retaliation for muslims the u.s. had killed. the new leader of al cay die is calling on libyan fighters who overthrew muammar gadhafi to set up an islamic state. he warns the libyan revolutionaries against what he calls western plot. he says nato forces that have aided the rebel fighters will now demand that libyans give up

their islamic faith and also urging algerians to revolt against their long time leader. his remarks appear in a 13 minute video that's surfaced on militant websites. [ bell dinging ] that bell tolled 17 times today in memory of the sailors killed aboard the uss cole. family, friends and even some survivorrings gathered at -- survivors gathered in norfolk at naval station to mark 11 years since that attack. the saudi man who planned that bombing still has not been tried. and police in germany now say over the past three days, they have found seven homemade bombs along berlin's railways. none of the devices -- two devices have exploded but fortunately no one has been hurt. train service though has been severely disrupted and an anti- war extremist group is claiming responsibility and it demands that germany pull all of its troops from afghanistan. the german national rail company is offering some big

reward money, about $140,000 for tips that lead to arrests. now to that breaking news we've been watching out of california. hard to comprehend. six people have been killed. three critically wounded. this was in a shooting inside a hair salon in the city of steel beach, california. police arrested a man in a traffic stop a half a mile from the shooting scene. he was taken right into custody and during the traffic stop multiple weapons were seized. the shooting happened in a cluster of small businesses on pacific coast highway in a community about 30 miles southeast of los angeles. a very active crime scene as you can imagine. a live look right now at police presence. we're monitoring the situation and we'll have updates from california as they come in. well, new at 6:00 tonight, concerns about metro's ability to handle an emergency. now this comes on the heels of two rough commutes on the orange line. one last night, and the other one this morning. our delia goncalves live now at metro center to tell us more.

>> reporter: well, derek we can tell you that metro leaders have been meeting all day at head quarters and looking at video and analyzing their response to the nightmare commute yesterday. you know it took some folks nearly two hours to get home. but at least they did get home. the man behind these delays. he's in the hospital in life- threatening condition. this morning's commute at the rosslyn metro station went smoothly but passengers were still hungover from yesterday's fiasco. >> it was nuts. >> reporter: the scene, a chaotic station, the time just before 5:00 p.m. metro now confirms a 39-year- old mclean man j.ed in front of a train and became trapped underneath. >> we were trying to rescue a living human being from underneath the first car of a train. >> reporter: service came to a screeching halt forcing passengers to get off and catch shuttle buses and just look at the results. thousands of people packed like sardines. >> we were almost pressed up

against the moving train as it was trying to leave. >> the train has as many as 800 or 900 passengers aboard and they arrive every four minutes. >> reporter: to make matters worse the escalator shut down because of the overload a safety mechanism. tensions mounted even on the facebook page where wilma writes -- >> as soon now with that being said, metro does admit that they probably could have controlled the crowds possibly by staggering the trains that were arriving at rosslyn. in the meantime, they think their passengers were being patient and they do recommend that everyone sign up for metro alerts is you can get updates on the phone and possibly avoid the next big delay. derek? >> metro passengers got a lot

to put up with. thank you delia goncalves. well, it sounds like the brand new route out to dulles will be called the silver line officially. but the examiner reports now that metro appears ready to adopt the moniker officially. maryland's system for handling the criminally insane is under some scrutiny tonight after a stabbing in bowie. the director of the state's department of mental hygiene said the staff is distraught by news that a former patient turned violent just a month after her controversial release. scott broom is on the follow- up. >> reporter: 56-year-old an troy net starks charged with -- antoinette charged with attempted murder. she had been conditionally released from the state's perkins hospital center for the criminally insane. where she'd spent nearly six years confined and treated for a similar stabbing attack at montgomery mall. that nearly killed two shoppers in 2005.

new information tonight in the deadly helicopters crash in manhattan. the ntsb says it was inspected just to days before it went down on a tour during the annual interception mechanics usually take much of the aircraft apart and put it all back together again. the pilot told investigators the nose of the helicopter swung unexpectedly as he took off. one person died in the crash.

a month and a half after that earthquake that hit central virginia, another aftershock today. it was 3.0 and it hit around 12:40 this afternoon and it is the 41st aftershock since the august 23rd quake. louisa county middle school was briefly evacuated and nobody was hurt. parts of the national cathedral are going to be removed tomorrow. a crane will pick up the two ton pieces from the southeast grand pinnacle of the central tower and that will make the pinnacles and the central tower more stable which will clear the way for more stonework repairs. tonight, a massive sink home behind two homes in stafford county continues to grow. >> already claimed their backyard decks and now it's just inches away from taking the homes themselves. mor mor spent the day -- brittany morehouse spent the day in stafford. >> so frustrating that i'm losing my house. >> reporter: it's been one

month since the sinkhole suddenly developed practically overnight where she lives. one month and nothing has changed except the hole has gotten bigger. >> nothing has changed with the insurance or the mortgage. right now. so everything is the same. we're still working, trying to get somebody to take the responsibility. >> reporter: so for now, her fate lies in the outcome of a land probe of the ground that has swallowed her neighbor's deck and threatens to swallow the houses and force the fire marshal to condemn both homes. >> they are looking for answers. the probe will show us if there's any movement in the area. >> reporter: the probe is being paid for by donations by a nearby church but barnes says so far that's the only assistance she can guarantee even though her husband was a veteran with insurance. >> now it has chapped again and -- happened again and i'm in the sure it wouldn't happen in the -- not sure it wouldn't

light showers across the metro area. not really going to clear out anytime soon. the good news is they will stay light and some showers on the west side of 270 and some showers between d. c. and also fredericksburg down 95 and also out 66 but you can see they're all green which means light activity. now if we zoom in a little bit, we'll see the little better view of the showers. heaviest one actually is right around bethesda on the silver spring side on the belt psi and just briefly moderate rain but for the most part everything is light. route 7 some showers and certainly down 95 you'll find some showers. now we'll put this into motion over the next hour and really everything just moves essentially north northeast which is where it's been going the past day or so and everything is light. not going to be continuous showers for us. temperatures a little cooler today. not bad. mid 60s downtown. 64 in manassas and 66 in fredericksburg. some 50s though up into

frederick hagerstown upper 50s and martinsburg also upper 50s. so here's the deal. a wet evening commute and there are some of these leaves beginning to fall little bit. some of the roads are slippery. showers will diminish tonight. the chance for showers in the forecast overnight, tomorrow and also friday. billion that a chance of -- with that a chance of a thunderstorm as well thursday and friday. here's the futurecast. tonight 11:00 some showers possible. probably walk the dog. nothing heavy. then we get a break by morning which is good news although the roads may still be wet but just some clouds hang tough and some showers to the east and some showers well to the southwest of us. by lunchtime, a little bit of a break. i think we'll see some peeks of the none tomorrow and i'm opt mink us but that way but then by evening all the showers come back. good news is they will be light and bad news is they will come back in time for the rush hour. after that friday morning and still some showers primarily north of town but notice some breaks in clouds back in parts of the valley. that bodes well for us over the weekend. for tonight, mostly cloudy and cool with showers.
