wall street come to washington conference at the marriott downtown. a conference that focused this year on the health care industry. >> too many people in this country a year can't get cancer treatment. >> dr. margaret flowers, a pediatrician from baltimore, seen in this video provided by the october 2011 group. saying wall sheet should have no role in the nation's health care system and to the extent that it has it has only made the system worse. >> we could have an alternative but we have to get big business out of health care. >> reporter: another woman agrees. >> i think our health care system is pathetic. >> reporter: she says her father committed suicide seven years ago rather than burden his family with ever increasing medical bills. >> he had a blood clot, he had some other health problems. >> reporter: scarlet is now among the dozens of people camping out at freedom plaza and articulating a number of grievances.

scarlet says changing the nation's health care system could obviously take awhile but her father's death convinced her that it has to be ton. >> he said in his note that he left for me, he said getting old and ill without money is simply not an option in this country. >> reporter: the protestors have now been camped out here at freedom plaza for one full week. their permit allows them to stay for four more months. derek? >> going to be a long wet night out there. thank you, matt. congressional investigators are demanding answers about operation fast and furious from eric holder. holder and other justice officials were subpoenaed today asking them to supply records they have about the operation. the committee chairman says he believes the attorney general knew more about problems with fast and furious than he is publicly admitting. >> thousands of pages of documents. >> we don't get cooperation as many people know when we do a

subpoena we get overly redacted documents. this is not the most apparent administration in some areas. >> we have sent thousands of pages of documents up to the hill. we will look at the subpoenas. i'm sure we will undoubtedly comply with them. >> investigators say in this operation federal law enforcement allowed thousands of assault rifles and weapons to go to suspected mexican drug and weapons traffickers. this program was supposed to take down those people but some of the weapons turned up at murder scenes including the shooting death of border patrol agent brian terry last december. tonight maryland's system for handling the criminally insane is being called into some serious question after a stabbing outside a department star. attempted murder for allegedly going into one store, stealing knives then using those knives to stab. an incurable schizophrenic. she

was let out of the hospital for the contractly insane just about a month ago. she had been committed to that hospital following another stabbing incident back in 2005 at montgomery mall. and now montgomery county state's attorney john mcarthy says "enough is enough." >> i think this entire area of conditional releases and the circumstances under which we release people who are violent offenders back into the community need a state wide examination. >> today a judge ordered starks held without bail. the number of people killed in a california hair salon is now up to eight. man say a man walked into the salon in broad daylight and opened fire and hit nine people. >> unprecedented here. never heard of anything like this. >> we have gone multiple years with zero homocides period some

this obviously is an unusual and tragic circumstance. >> police are still trying to figure out why the gunman did this. he was the ex-husband of one of the stylists. six victims died at the scene including the salon's owner. the one surviving person is still in crit can condition. soldiers doing all the work barely breaking a sweat getting their mission accomplished. a recently unveiled battle simulator is getting more troops ready for war. >> reporter: here the vendors are showing off some of the latest and freightest in military technology and that also means that virtual battle fields are taking a step into the future. if it looks like a life-sized video game to you, well, that's because it is. its main purpose however is for anything but entertainment. >> look out on the roof. >> reporter: the expedition d.i. by quantum 3d is the latest in

virtual infantry training. >> we have come a long ways as a battlefield tactic. allows soldiers and our war fighters to get experience in combats prior to actually being deployed. >> reporter: these troops give us an up close view of how it works. it is made out of head piece, goggles, vest and a rifle. all pieces decked out with sensors and a backpack that create life-like scenario that try to bridge the gap between virtual reality and battlefield reality. >> we actually have a work station class processor, intel processor and video graphics processor generating the 3d imagery. >> it will be coming down on your head researcher . >> reporter: it is a war gamer's dream. the system's designers allowed me to suit up and step into an urban battle situation equipped with state-of-the-art technology and the rifle.

all of this gear costs upwards of tens of thousands of dollars and the soldiers that use it say it is pretty darn close to the real thing. >> it is a very good approximation of what it is doing. obviously there aren't bullets flying at you but at the same time this is a valuable technology that let's people take the nex step in the learning process to get them prepared to get into combat. >> reporter: close to 2700 troops have died in battle in afghanistan as well and with men and women still deployed there. this technology gives many hope more will make it home. >> this is a tool we haven't had previously. hopefully it means more guys come home healthy and alive. >> let's hope some the simulator is currently being used by army national guard groups and the army will install the system throughout the entire nation by next year it is expect. some drizzle, fog, we will

in 1957 after he was fired from his job as a government astronomer because he was gay. he became the first person to stage gay rights protests in front of the white house and pentagon. signs and buttons from those protests are on display at the smithsonian museum of american history. frank kameny was 86. tonight millions of blackberry users are seeing red, myself included. the outages are still hitting the u.s. and hard. blackberry addicts are none too pleased about it. >> having trouble sending, having trouble receiving. sent five or six blackberry messages and they just don't get through. >> the canadian company that runs blackberry says a crucial part of its infrastructure failed and so did its backup system. meanwhile, it is using twitter to keep customers up-to-date and customers are using twitter

to trash blackberry. one popular tweet. what did one blackberry user say to the other blackberry user. answer nothing. that new york plane crash miracle on the hudson. let's call this one the minor miracle the on the turnpike. check out the scene of the accident. the pilot called in, said he was having some trouble and then he crashed landed right on the florida turnpike near miami. he came in headed south but he landed in the northbound lanes. but guess what? didn't hit anybody. and though the plane -- you can see not much left of that. take people on board hurt but expected to get better. snoop the effort on the pilot's part to bring it down and not get anybody hurt many. kudos to him. >> i don't know why we see brian orakpo for a second but he was not on the plane. the crash made a mess of the traffic down there in south florida but at least everybody on that stretch of road got

home today. the plane was headed from one regional airport to another when it went down. still trying to figure out why. in the spirit of dr. martin luther king jr. the mayor announced a plan in a march to call for autonomy for the district. long time consumer and d.c. activist ralph nader. >> after the civil war african- americans got to vote, at least in theory. right after world war i women got to vote through a constitutional amendment. where are we in 2011 in the district of columbia? neither men nor women nor african-americans have the vote. >> the d.c. full democracy freedom rally in march as it is called, scheduled for this sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. at freedom plaza. on the very same day will be the martin luther king jr. memorial. we are honored to bring you live coverage of that

dedication event right here on wusa9. sunday morning. 11 a.m. >> topper saying a nice blue sky. >> not like last time. >> many all the rain. >> we are looking at showers. drizzle. and some fog out there tonight. maybe allow extra time tomorrow morning. live doppler 9000. nothing is heavy. but it is kind of persistent and that is going to be sort of the theme for tomorrow and has for friday. again, light green indicates light activity but we find some light showers, some drizzle up in the western sections of montgomery section. out 66 past manassas towards warrenton. nothing heavy. where does it go for the next hour? put this into motion. generally drifting back to the north and to the east where it pretty much has been doing for the last couple days. more activity around leesburg

and chantilly but nothing heavy. if you are not seeing anything in the immediate area where you are there is still some cloud and drizzle around so you're not totally dry. for so many morning a wet commute. some showers possible. leavings -- leaves on the road. by afternoon even a better chance for showers. so probably a wet evening commute. friday some showers and thunderstorms. pretty good chance of thunderstorms actually on friday with a cold front. that will set the stage though for a cooler but dry and bright saturday. so we will take it. here is our futurecast. 5:30 a.m., all light activity but enough to wet the roads manassas to d.c. up 207 and also out 7 and 50 toward annapolis. we will stop around lunchtime. again, nothing heavy but still persistent showers. lower temps just a little bit but not as optimistic as how many breaks in the cloud we will see. by evening better chance for showers especially to the west and south of town. as we go through the evening rush hour not a good mix there.

by about this time tomorrow night, some breaks in the clouds but still some showers left to the west, leesburg to the north in frederick but at least dissipating a bit. friday morning notice we see more showers back to the west and this is with a cold front that will roll through friday and set the stage for a nice weekend. mostly cloudy, cool tonight, fog, showers possibly a thunderstorm. 56 to 62. tomorrow morning, we will say becoming partly sunny, showers, maybe a thunderstorm by afternoon. high temperatures 70 to 75. winds southeast at about 10. next seven days. it will stay mild saturday showers. mid-70s for the football game. low 70s on monday. and more thunderstorms possible on tuesday evening. >> thank you, topper. we will be back in a minute with sports.

coming out of their bye week the last season the redskins were embarrassed on national television by philadelphia losing 59-29 on monday night football. the skins then went on to lose five more games to close out

the season. this week though those that remember that pounding last year have revenge on their mind but they know it won't be easy. the eagles with one of the best offenses in the league when it comes to moving the ball and spreading the field but the achilles heel, is the eagles record that doesn't show just how dangerous this team can be. >> we know offensively they will move the ball and bring it so we can get our hands on some turnovers hopefully it will be the outcome of the game but we will face some adversity. we have got to make sure that they don't put any points on the board. >> and their first full practice after a week off tight end chris cooley was once again limited because of his bum knee missing all of the preseason because of that knee injury and has had somewhat of a little impact so far this season. the nfl season may be five weeks old but we know who the redskins will face next year besides their usual divisional

games. the skins will host atlanta, baltimore, cincinnati and carolina. they go on the road to face new orleans, tampa bay, cleveland and pittsburgh. in the first two games last season alex ovechkin had already tallied two goals and two assists. this season he has got just one assist in zero goals. not the start they were looking for from the captain. he acknowledged his poor play after monday's night win against tampa and agreed with a statement that he can play better. but bruce boudreau also commented that a lot his guys could be better on the ice. alex ovechkin's team has confidence it will soon pick up. >> when everybody is healthy, two young stars of our league and two faces of our league going head-to-head and great supporting cast members too. a great hockey game. >> finally tonight this from game 3 of the nlcs. great video.
