some injuries. . we go to the scene now. >> reporter: after some clashing with police and arrests earlier today, the protests now here in lower manhattan is mostly peaceful. people are staying in this park area behind us and there seems to be no end by the occupation of protestors downtown. the demonstration in downtown new york turned ugly when protestors took to the streets and headed for the stock exchange. police stepped in to make arrests and clear the crowd. eyewitnesses say this demonstrator was struck by an nypd motorcycle. he tried to free his trapped foot and officers dragged him away. the trouble followed what had been a victory for the hundreds camped out here in a near park. the city threatened to move everybody out to clean the area

but the last minute decided to let them stay. >> we are articulate people, we are considerate people. we are here to stand up for humanity. >> reporter: protestors across the country many blame corporate greed for unemployment and the economic state of america. those who work on wall street say the protestors are targeting the wrong people. but new yorkers kelly atkinson who used to work in finance sympathizes with the crowd. he has been out of work for four months. >> you think the men and women up there are listening to what's going on down here? >> absolutely. nobody is ignoring them if that's what they are thinking. they are not ignoring them. the guys up there don't have the solutions but it takes more than the wall street guys to have a solution. >> people united. >> reporter: atkinson was on his way to a job interview as protestors vow to occupy downtown indefinitely. >> reporter: for now protestors say they are here to stay. this will come to an end at

some point whether the people that own the private park which is technically a public area and want to clean it out. also, lesli, the weather. it is raining now. if it gets cold as days and weeks go on people may not want to stay out here indefinitely. >> some kind of day. street protests planned around the world from new zealand to london. >> we have seen arrests among the protestors here in washington and there is no indication they are about to give up anytime soon. our delia gonclaves is live with those demonstrators down on freedom plaza. delia? >> reporter: i can say, anita, it is a lot quiet here in washington, d.c., than in new york. there are still lots of folks that are here. in fact, they say they will continue to be here and continue protesting well beyond

their four-month permit and you can see from the tents they have here they built a city of sorts. protestors tell us their resolve remains strong despite the living conditions. demonstrators say they are united in spirit with protestors over at mcpherson square saying the movement over there has grown, there is a reason why it hasn't reached the height of "occupy wall street." >> it occupies a large amount of people. so the support systems, basis are extremely large than the methods we have here. it is hard to say i'm going to come out and support a cause when you're the bread winner of your family, so nobody else can really come out and make the purpose and voices heard. >> reporter: so they say they will stay here to make sure everyone get their voices heard. they are going to remain protesting for the folks who physically cannot come down

here. you can see some folks were actually moving their tents. what they are doing right now is that a lot of people are shifting over their tents to this side of freedom plaza getting ready for a breast cancer event that is scheduled for tomorrow. tomorrow morning, in fact, an action is taking place against bank of america. they are doing that tomorrow morning. anita, lesli? >> thank you, delia. today's detention hearing for a virginia man accused of spying on u.s. citizens for syria has been postponed. prosecutors say 47-year-old mohammed swade, a syrian. the government has been brutally suppressing a popular revolt in syria and they say they are trying to intimidate expats. the syrian government denies it used him as an agent. prince george's county police need your help to find a

couple of thieves. so this is a picture of a man wanted in connection with several breaking and entering cases in college park. and then this is an alleged accomplice. these pictures were taken in new carollton. if you know anything about these men, prince george's county police want to hear from you. the medical examiner has just released new details in the murder of that german town mom whose son is still missing. jane mcquain was beaten and stabbed to death and police are charged her husband but bruce leshan reports curtis lopez hast has hired a lawyer and he is not talking. >> reporter: lopez didn't give any information. furious neighbors say more than a week after they last saw william and his mom they talked to lopez who was going in and out of the german town apartment where police finally

found the mom's traumatized body. >> when you had this conversation with him was jane already dead? >> yeah. i don't know how long she had been dead in that apartment. >> reporter: police say it has been two weeks since anyone they have talked to last saw william alive. they suspect lopez can unlock the mystery. >> do you still have some hope that he is okay? maybe dropped off with a relative or something like that? >> we absolutely have to have that hope. the more time that goes by makes it tougher. >> reporter: lopez was convicted in the 1980s of stabbing a man and leaving him to die on a pennsylvania turnpike. his wife testified on his behalf. but that was the past friends say she wanted to leave behind to dedicate herself to her son. apparently she did not succeed. in rockville, bruce leshan, 9news now. >> friends will hold a candle light vigil for william's safe

return 7:30 at the german town community center and will release balloons in his honor. gary giordano apparently has a new lawyer. gaithersburg man connected to the disappearance of robyn gardner has retained a lawyer with ties to natalie holloway. chris leguez represented the two arrested early on in the natalie holloway case. gary giordano claims robyn gardner disappeared while they were snorkeling. a rivetting day of testimony.. prosecution and defense focusing on two key

after a nearly two-month delay the memorial to martin luther king jr. will finally be dedicated this weekend. crews are putting the finishing touches on the memorial site and a detailed program including speakers and music and dramatic readings begin at

republican presidential john huntsman said he is skipping next week's g.o.p. in nevada. new hampshire is locked in a schedule fight with nevada. while they are debating next tuesday he will hold a campaign event in the granite state.

he says he will boycott the nevada caucuses all together. you love your dollar bills don't you? they could become history if a member of congress gets his way. a congressman, a republican from arizona, is sponsoring some legislation which would replace dollar bills with dollar coins. now supporters say the move would save billions of dollars because coins last longer than paper money. but not everybody likes that idea. americans have not wanted the coins. if people don't use the change that could offset any benefits. back in '02 a man had his hand and lower leg amputated because after serious blood infection. now he has a new pair of hands. a team of doctors and nurses performed the rare double hand

transplant. at a press conference today the patient thanked the staff and the family of the donor. >> i am humble and overwhelmed with emotions. thank you for this incredible gift. you have given me new life. >> he has months of physiotherapy ahead of him but the optimism that made him such a good transplant candidate will serve him well. two men wearing masks and carrying weapons burst into a local gas station convenience store and the clerk behind the counter literally begs for his life. the robbery all caught on tape. we are joined live from alexandria with the details -- what can only be described as a pretty dramatic story. >> reporter: lesli, the surveillance video system in that store behind me is state of the art. there are five cameras equipped with microphones and that provided police some of the

most dramatic surveillance video they say they have ever seen. now, police say the two suspects entered the store around 5 a.m. on sunday brandishing at least one weapon. they man handled one clerk to the ground. that clerk is heard pleading for his life. don't kill me he would say repeatedly as one of the robbers held him and the other rifled through a cash register. another many man in the store was able to escape through a back door. the police called the two brazen. >> it suggests that they have committed crimes in the past. >> reporter: now, the robbers escaped in a stolen car. that stolen vehicle was found abandoned nearby and because this happened in a location that is near several police

jurisdictions fairfax county police are speaking to their counterparts in other parts of the county and other parts of the state and even across the river in washington, d.c., to see if the suspects match a description of any other similar robberies. anita, back to you. >> thank you. let's take a look at some amazing video now. these pictures were shot yesterday in quantico where the national weather service confirmed a tornado touched down. you can see the swirling winds kicking up a tremendous amount of debris. topper, you were talking about this last night at 11 p.m. that's on i-95. >> just actually north of the entrance to quantico and it was confirmed about 5:30 many. that was insane. >> you see that and you understand why you were so concerned yesterday. they were coming rapid fire. >> we get doppler warnings and they are automatically sent to us. once we get them we can say a

high risk or low risk and the ones yesterday, i was concerned. i was concerned. and i was concerned looking at that video too. if i would have been in that car i wouldn't have been shooting video. what is going to happen the showers pulled out today just about what we thought early afternoon. we have a couple of sprinkles in the mountains but this area of low pressure will sit and spin up in southern quebec and that is going to drive our winds tonight and really through tomorrow. the winds are picking up. 23-mile-per-hour wind gusts downtown. 28 up in frederick. and 26-mile-per-hour wind gust out towards martinsburg. they will be with us really through tonight, tomorrow. lesser on sunday. right now 68 downtown. 64 manassas. 68 in fredericksburg and 64 leesburg. 63 up in frederick. so temperatures not crazy cool behind the cold front. nice weekend. it will be windy and cooler tonight. sweatshirt for football games. good idea. windy and cool on saturday.

and very nice for the redskin game. could barely diagram better weather for the game. clear to partly cloudy windy and cooler. 48 to 54. winds gusty. downtown talking 50s but there will be some 40s tonight. gaithersburg will be 49. college park and bowie probably 49. low 50s in waldorf. 50 in reston and fairfax. sterling 49. and leesburg, manassas, middleburg probably 49 as well. by morning mostly sunny, windy and cool. grab a light jacket but a bright day. 50s and 60s. winds southwest 10 to 20 and by afternoon mostly sunny windy and nice but a bit cool. highs near 70. winds out of the southwest 10 to 20 and gusty. i just got a note actually from someone playing golf tomorrow. a one to two club wind for that southwest wind. keep that in mind. saturday in the morning 48 to 54. 60s by noon with sunshine. 68 to 72 by evening. cooler but a great day. now the next three days milder on sunday. sunshine. back up to 74.

the maryland terrapins having less than a stellar season under their new head coach, under .500 in the middle of a quarterback controversy and schedule doesn't get much easier in the coming weeks. terps hosting clemson, eighth ranked. this is one of those games that the terps have pulled off an upset in the past and feel it is possible once again tomorrow. a couple plays we will be 4-1. couple plays of defense, couple place on special teams, couple plays on offense. no one is happy with it but as long as we can build the steps up, it will be fine. cornerback d'angelo hall has been added as questionable with a knee injury. chris cooley also limited because of his troublesome

knee. dc highschoolsports.net game of the week. edison at stewart. famous from the area. tonight's toyota game night report. fighting in hockey pretty much go hand in hand. guaranteed to see a few punches thrown, a few bloody lips and several penalty minutes on any given night but some players have no business fighting and usually that ends up bad for them. last night the caps and pittsburgh players getting into a scuffle. two shots on the side of the player's head knocked unconscious. look at the gesture afterwards. put him to sleep very unsportsman like. the teammates responded today. >> well, i think he knew exactly what happened. he knew he got a good punch in. >> i was most upset with the fans cheering. once a guy goes down you're going to cheer initially but quit cheering, it is not the best situation. >> after practice today though

it was all about the kids. about 15 families with kids fighting cancer took part in an nhl-themed flashes of hope photo shoot. capitals players signing autographs all part of the nhl's hockey fights cancer month. >> a lot of these kids they are battling and going through early testing and they come out here with smiles on their face and get to meet their heros on the ice. it is just a wonderful thing. >> so a very special and touching event today for the caps. >> awesome. >> jason does this every year he has been with the capitals. >> portraits. kids pretty excited to take those pictures for sure. >> yes. >> all right. so we get good game day weather for later? >> good football weather and good for the skins on sunday as well. >> the cbs evening news is next. >> that's right, and derek is
