>> reporter: weatherwise, looking at our day planner on this monday morning, temperatures in the low 60s now. upper 60s by noon and the clouds around early. we'll get rid of them here later this morning. a very decent lunch hour and a nice afternoon. highs between 70 and 75. winds northwesterly this morning will be southwesterly this afternoon. you can see the showers lining up even a little bit of lightning here. here's the one little lightning flash. there it was toward preston county, west virginia. live doppler 9000 hd. west of frederick now coming through southern washington county north of harper's ferry. 57 in martinsburg this morning. cumberland is 52. it is cambridge 68. we are looking at high temperatures today. most areas the low 70s, west of town we could see a few spots in

the mid 70s. it is time to turn it over to monika with timesaver traffic. we have had a good situation in southwest dc this morning. if you are planning to head out the door right now and over to 295, you want to know about this huge hole developed southbound 295 right here at south capital street in southwest in the right lane. it is three by six feet big. authorities are on the scene. helping to detour traffic with the area. the good news is northbound 295 remains open. as far as we know south capital remains blocked as well. use malcolm x as your detour. lots of options in place for you. hopefully it should be okay for your ride. we'll keep you posted on that. let's go to the north side of town. construction is a little late in clearing on the beltway. a lot of slow traffic, 40 miles per hour going through this area on the outer loop toward university boulevard where they

are picking up this construction from overnight. coming up in my next report we'll update you on all the area roadways. back to you guys. >> reporter: police have shut down the capital street bridge. several cars were damaged in this collapse. 9news now reporter kristen fish soldier live with this developing story. good morning kristen. >> what happened overnight is crews were working to repair the road. all the vibration from the cars is not so much a road collapse just a very large pothole. you can't see it from where i'm standing right now. it is way up there on the southbound lanes of 29. it is described as being a hole being three feet and six feet wide. nobody was injured by this hole, but several cars got flat tires from it. it certainly caused issues if a few drivers this morning. what we are seeing right now is

one of the southbound lanes is shutdown. the other one is open. as traffic picks up this morning it will likely slow down. the good news is monika was saying all the northbound lanes are open. that will be not impacting traffic too much. in terms of south capital street, the whole roadway that goes underneath 295 has been closed for about an hour earlier this morning. you can see it is now back open. the whole problem is there was actually debris falling through that big hole onto the roadway. the fear was it could land on top of some car. we know that is not a danger. the good news south capital street back open. northbound lanes 295 all open. one lane is still closed. it will likely stay that way throughout the morning rush. jessica, andrea this. thank you chris for that live update. a 28-year-old woman is charged

with setting fire to an apartment building. firefighters were called to the 10,000 block of wood berry drive. 28-year-old tanisha bates is being held without bond on a felony arson charge. maryland lawmakers start their special session today to redraw the state's congressional tests. now all redistricting proposals will get a fair shake in front of the general assembly. previously legislators were only going to debate and vote on governor martin o'malley's plan but both parties agreed to hear competing ideas. it has been open for almost two months. but now the martin luther king jr. memorial has been officially dedicated on the national mall. the monument is the first to a black person and a nonpresident. members of the king family spoke as did president obama who credits dr. king with paving his path to the white house. a black preacher.

consumers spent more money than expected last month. the dow climbed 166 points with a gain of almost 4% for the entire week. the nasdaq up by 47 points for a gain of 7% for the week. the s&p 9500 rose by 21 points friday and 6% for the week. it appears whether the counting stopped, apple may have met or exceeded the expectations of industry experts by selling 4 million iphone 4fs this weekend. the sales did hit 4 million, that would top all previous versions. dc-based online deal site online social is events will be more expensive than the current deals. the gourmet offered was fine dining restaurants and other businesses in the fad industry.

redskins yesterday. the turnovers that have plagued rex grossman his entire career showed up. getting benched in the middle of the game doesn't help with team chemistry or confidence. rex grossman had four interceptions. that is 11 turnovers in five games. thankfully the skins defense steps up to hold the eagles scoreless in the second half. fans were booing, chant fog john beck to come in the game. they eventually got him in the fourth quarter. here's what he had to say after the game. >> it was a bad game. got to forget about it, move on. ultimately, i'm responsible for the football. take a look at the film, try to talk about where the mistakes were and the reads and those type of things. right now. everybody knows. you have four picks in the game. good things aren't going to

closed with a tractor trailer accident. our driver tells us the tractor trailer hit the bridge abutment and lost its load. it is going to take awhile to clean this up. in the meantime take the scatter way to branch road to get around this situation. the next map on 25 southbound at south capital street a huge hole in the right lane. authorities are on the scene here. the good news is, southbound the left lane is getting by and northbound all lanes are open wii the -- by the incident here. take a live look right now on 270. coming in from frederick. you are fine. all the way down to the point where the lanes divide. another look at the area coming up in my next report at 5:38. this morning police are investigating a fatal stabbing in northeast dc. police tell 9news now officers were called to the to an apartment in the 1800 block

of high street. they found a man had been stabbed in the head. investigators are saying very little about the female suspect. an overnight crash sent one victim to the hospital. the crashed happened in the 1000 block of largo center drive in upper marlboro. investigators haven't released much information about the crash or on the condition of the victims. potentially slow commute for this some this morning. part of 25 is still shut down, due to a joint hole in the right lane. several drivers hit the hole this morning and damaged their cars. 9 news reporter kristen fisher is right below the bridge with an update. >> reporter: good morning andrea. we are starting to see activity now up on 295. take a look you can see they just walked away. but they were standing right there. they are repairing this big giant pothole that opened up overnight between three feet and

six feet wide. it was caused by crews who were doing overnight repairs on the deck of the roadway and they say that this hole was caused by all the vibrations of the cars going over the road, causing this hole to open up. when it opened up, it apparently let some debris fall down from the roadway down onto the south capital street. it had opened up about an hour ago. police have now shutdown access to south capital street, the fear being as these crews continue to try to patch up that pothole, that debris could potentially fall on top of some cars. so we have south capital street shutdown. one lynn of 25 southbound closed, but the good news is, if there is good news in this. all the northbound lanes that will be getting the most traffic, all the northbound

lanes of 25 are still open. one southbound lane closed and it will likely stay that way throughout the morning rush. andrea. thank you for that live update underneath or near the 25 bridge. some students in our area head back to school this morning after spending the weekend looking for a missing classmate. police are searching for 11-year-old william mcquain after his mother was found murdered last week. mcquain looked in the woods, checking the boy's favorite hiding spots. with a sense of dread, they checked in trash cans, trying not to think their friend might be dead. >> he is probably lost and scared right now. because he has nowhere to go. no food or anything. >> young william's stepfather, curtis lopez, has an extradition hearing today in north carolina. he is facing charges in the deaths of williams's mother,

51-year-old jane mcquain, who died of blunt force trauma to the head. let me tell you, virginia state police will start cracking down on parking laws at the state's biggest commuter all right. that is the woodbridge lot. in prince william county parkway. it has more than 2300 spaces. but today's washington examiner reports they are usually full before 7:00 a.m. a state police spokeswoman says illegally parked cars make it harder for drivers to see pedestrians and they could impede emergency vehicles. falls church is holding a town hall meeting tonight to discuss storm water and flooding impact from tropical storm lee last month. some cities have flood waters coming up a foot or more in their basements. representatives will discuss what they are doing to discuss

some of the flooding issues, the meeting starts at 7:00 at the community center on little falls street. today president obama kicks off a three day bus tour of north carolina and virginia. he is going to be demanding that congress pass his jobs plan. putting people back to work. i'm going to travel all over the country over the next few weeks, so that we can remined congress that that is the most important thing. >> the president is hoping capitol hill lawmakers will at least pass first part of his plan. it would give states $35 billion to help save jobs. the visits to north carolina and virginia are significant because these traditional republican leaning states both voted for barack obama back in 2008. the ua w said more than 90% of

the workers voting at the kansas plant approved the agreement. overall 60% of ford workers have voted in favor. vote asking scheduled to end tomorrow. they will get checks in the saning bonus. workers at general motors have already approved their own contract. chrysler workers are expected to begin voting soon. dollar bills, they could become history if one member of congress gets his way. that is why congressman spites soldier, a -- sweeter is supporting replacing dollar bills with coins. not everybody likes this deal. americans have had problems with dollar coins in the past. and if people don't use the change, that could offset any potential saving. i keep these, i buy them. and every time i go to the bank
