day bus tour that includes stops in virginia. the first order of business, however, is north carolina. a state where the president narrowly won in the last election. danielle nottingham has more. >> reporter: president obama traveled to asheville, north carolina. the first stop on a three day road trip to push congress to pass his jobs legislation. >> i'll be doing a little bit of talking but mostly, i'll be doing a whole lot of listening. because there doesn't seem to be much listening going on in washington these days. >> if the motion is not agreed to. >> reporter: senate republicans blocked his $447 billion jobs package last week. now the president wants lawmakers to pass legislation in pieces, including a $50 billion infrastructure bill. money that could be used to build a new runway at asheville's airport and create construction jobs. >> we can't do nothing. too many folks are hurting out there to do nothing. >> reporter: the president will

board a bus and take his case on the road. making several stops in north carolina and virginia. the white house says the trip is strictly about jobs, but republicans say the bus tour looks a lot more like a campaign swing. >> we want the president to work with us. we want him to stop the campaigning. >> reporter: heading into the 2012 election, the president will have to rebuild support to win the two battleground states again. the latest polls show his approval rating is just 42% in north carolina, and 45% in virginia. >> thank you north carolina. >> reporter: the president says congress needs to pass his jobs legislation as soon as possible. but it is likely lawmakers won't start considering key components until next month. danielle nottingham, cbs news, the white house. traffic is moving again in camp springs, maryland, after a morning accident. a rig struck a bridge on allentown road and lost its

load. the accident shut down the road for much of the rush hour. the driver of the tractor trailer was able to walk away unharmed. a man accused of trying to blow-up his home, oh, i'm sorry. let me tell you about this first. traffic was also tied-up on i 295 south after a massive pothole opened up overnight. the slow lane was shut down throughout the morning as crews worked to repair the six foot-wide hole. the road underneath the heavy pass on south capital street, was also closed. dc police were worried about gravel and rocks falling through the hole and landing on cars underneath. no one was injured, but several cars did have minor damage. all right. a man accused of trying to blow-up his home sparked a large apartment fire in boston. the six alarm fire broke out early this morning, in rocks

bury. police say a man who showed up with burns at boston medical center said he tried to blow-up his own apartment. residents reported hearing an explosion around 1:00 a.m. a dozen people were rushed to nearby hospitals, including two firemen. today marks the one month anniversary of the occupy wall street movement. with $300,000 in donations, and plenty of supplies, demonstrators say they are going strong. 175 protesters, however, were arrested in chicago this weekend. most were later charged with misdemeanors. the protest turned violent, however in italy, after a hard core group of radicals were in a peaceful demonstration. author, activist and

exceed 200 miles per hour. >> you are able to sustain that speed and build momentum. they run three or four wide and the domino effect when the track basically got blocked. >> drivers were concerned about high speeds at the las vegas motor speedway. a racer said we all had a bad feeling about this place, in particular just because of the high bank and go how easy it was to go flat. we knew it could happen, but it is just really sad. fellow racers say wheldon will be missed. >> everybody in the indictment did i car series -- indy car series considered dan a friend. >> news spread quickly. he won the indianapolis 500 two times. fans created a memorial outside the gate. >> he was a great ambassador of the sport and honestly, as a fan, he was one of the nicest guys i have ever met. >> the guy was genuinely down to earth all the time. >> reporter: wheldon leaves

behind a wife and two small children. randall pinkston, cbs news. this is the first indianapolis 500 crash in five years. well the search has resumed for an 11-year-old boy. we are going to have more details on that. when we come back, we are going to be talking to montgomery county's head police officer in just a moment

the search has resumed for 11-year-old william mcquain. he is the little boy who has been missing for weeks, and his mother was discovered murdered in their germantown home. montgomery county police are searching an area on the property off i-270 and route 121. a second location is being searched. the boy's stepfather has been charged, and he is scheduled to have an extradition hearing later in north carolina. now to the investigation of what happened to a maryland woman missing in aruba. gary giardano will head to court today to appeal his 60-day detention order. the gaithersburg man has been

held in aruba as authorities are investigating the presumed death of his travel companion, robyn gardner. the frederick, maryland woman disappeared on august 2nd. giardano insists she was swept out to sea while the two were snorkeling. he has hired a lawyer who actually represented two security guards in the natalee holloway case. the case in aruba is one of several montgomery county cases making headlines really across the country. we have invited the county's top prosecutor, state's attorney john mccarthy, to talk about these cases. since we just got finished talking about gary year dawn know, what can you add to that -- bar i didn't -- gary giardano what can you say about that. >> not uncommon, but in order to get excused from a case, once you have entered your

appearance representing somebody, you need the court's permission. there is going to be a hearing. what the basis is, of when mr. giardano does not want his current lawyer to represent him, financial or ethical or other conflict, will be something that will sort its way out in court today down there. but ultimately, it is the judge's discretion whether to let that lawyer out. 11-year-old william mcquain. this is a heart wrenching story about this little boy. what can you tell us? >> again, obviously the police are working around the clock on this particular issue. they are searching in two different areas in the county. we are concerned. we believe that, obviously, this woman has been dead probably since prior to october 1st. the young man has not been seen since october 1st. and the police are following up on the leads. without getting into details, there are obviously reasons why they are looking where they are looking. but again, i think it is just part of them trying to be thorough. as you already also know, the suspect in this case, mr.

lopez, is in north carolina. in mecklenburg county. he has a hearing today. we are trying to extra diet him back here. we have lodged a charge against him for premeditated murder. the determination will be made, but we have a large area to look at, we are here in germantown, where they live, and he was found in north carolina. so obviously, we have hundreds of miles where potentially we could look to find this young man. >> okay. the case going to court next week. >> starts next monday. lou lou, woman. the defendant in this case is britney norwood, she is charged with first degree murder. the jury selection is anticipated monday and tuesday. opening statements probably tuesday afternoon and the trial is expected to last two weeks. >> so sad. two families, you know?

>> well, obviously, two good families. both sides of this. and obviously, we have become very close with the murray family, gina's family. -- jana's family. they have been supportive of us and we have tried to be supportive of them. >> thank you for being with us. we are going to take a break and be right back. don't go away.

hour. they were in the 30s this morning. so the air is dry, the humidity 43%. everything is low on the allergy count example mold spores, they are moderate. the system in the rockies is moving off to the east and southeast. and then in the gulf of mexico, potentially this might be trying to develop. even if it doesn't, there is a lot of tropical moisture coming into florida and that is going to be lifted north as the system moves toward us over the next couple of dies. the futurecast shows that front nice afternoon around here. partly cloudy skies tonight into tuesday morning. then as this system from the west comes toward us the moisture is going to come in from the south, we have a nor'easter here and some of the rain could be locally heavy. looking fine, real nice, temperatures in the low 70s. 40s and 50s tonight. again low 70s tomorrow. wednesday cooler, windy and wet, temperatures holding in the 60s to make an early shower.

look at the cool down for friday and saturday. 30 in the suburbs. j.c.? you know, play time is something that all children deserve. but homeless parents often find it difficult to nurture and develop a healthy child nthis week's hero central, i'm featuring the homeless children's play time project. an organization that specializes in reducing the trauma of temporary housing. each week, loretta jones brings her son and daughter to the northwest church family network on new york avenue. they go for recreational activities, and the opportunity to inner act with other youngsters. for two hours, the children can relax and play like normal children. >> at first my kids wouldn't go. my son used to scream because he didn't want to come. now he screams when it is time to go, he wants to stay. that is pretty exciting.

he really wants to be around other kids now. >> eight years ago, i can't mill la larson and a friend started the program to help homeless children. their belief was youngsters in shelters suffer from emotional, behavioral and learning problems. their answers, structured play. >> when children are traumatize and children who become homeless have gone through multiple traumas in their lives, ranging from domestic violence to eviction to losing belongings, losing family members. and one of the most powerful ways to heal for children is through play. >> volunteers are rewarded by creating childhood memories. not often found in transitional house jog we have had field trips, we have had pretend sleepovers and slumber parties for children who aren't allowed to have slumber parties. they can't have their friends over. so we bring the pajamas and the popcorn to them and let them

early detection is key it -- to a woman surviving breast cancer. a grant from the susan g. komen foundation is helping women with disabilities overcome barriers. andrea roane reports. >> i was injured when i was age 16. i had a diving accident and i became a quadriplegic. >> sherry is a lawyer, a special assistant to the inspector general at hh s, and wheelchair-bound. while recovering from treatments related to her disability, she felt a lump. she had a mammogram, then a biopsy. >> four days later i found out i had a cancer russ lump. >> reporter: research finds women with disabilities tend to get screened less often than women without limitations. sometimes even healthcare workers don't encourage screening. they and the patient focus on

the disability rather on the health conditions like breast and cervical cancers. in some cases women with disabilities feel like lightning can't strike twice. there is no way i can get breast cancer in addition to this. >> reporter: but several factors outside the disabled woman's control often create barriers to screenings. >> i have a tracheotomy, it was trying not to hit it on the machine. it takes awhile and it is not comfortable. >> reporter: with two komen-funded grants, the american association on health and disability surveyed 55 area medical facilities and hospitals, to measure accessibility. starting with door ways. >> this well meets the requirement of 32 inches. just so a woman in a wheelchair would be able to pass through easily. >> reporter: they looked at exam tables, did they lower for easy on and off. >> we do not have to get you out of the chair at all. >> reporter: and the mammography machine. >> if it goes down 24 inches it
