a pedestrian struck -- there was a pedestrian struck and it was a fatal situation. i know the car involved did stick around and the accident investigation is going to be continuing. in the meantime here's where it is exactly on the northbound side of route 301 between pierce road and substation road. i know that all lanes are blocked there. so you want to plan early if you're just heading out the door. you can use branch avenue as your alternate route. that's going to take you around that point but if you're heading north on route 301 go ahead and veer off on route 228 over to 210 and then again you can take that all the way up to the beltway. this is going to be there for a while and we'll keep you posted on this situation. let's take you over to the wilson bridge if you're already on the beltway or heading there anyway, no problems from oxon hill across the bridge span into alexandria and over to 395 which is where we'll take you now. on the northbound side ott edsall road looking good up to the 14th street bridge, all lanes are open. no big incidents to report here. back over to the maps, planning to heads over on to the trains i want to warn you that mark penn line 505 and 511 both are

running 15 to 20 minutes late this morning. another update on the situation on route 301 at 6:11. mike back to you. thanks monika. the top of the hour let's check on the stories happening today. facebook and the department of labor will announce a partnership. they're joining forces to create a new place to help americans find jobs. the announcement begins at 10:00 this morning. some excitement today at round hill elementary school in loudoun county. a u.s. coast guard helicopter will land there this morning to do a simulated sea rescue. it's part of the star spangled school year theme there. vice president joe biden heads to new hampshire today. he'll be filing the paperwork at the state capitol so he and president obama can officially get on the ballot in the state. the pair won new hampshire back in 2008 by four points. breaking news, a deadly shooting in the district. >> this all happened this morning near suitland parkway and alabama avenue in southeast washington. kristin fisher joins us live from the scene which is still

ongoing. kristin, good morning. >> reporter: good morning mike. well, the victim hire is described as being an adult man and he was a passenger on a metro bus that had been parked at this bus stop on alabama avenue just on the other side of this police unit. you can see that's the crime scene and they've got this section of the street just one block shut down at the moment. now this all started around midnight when this passenger was shot several times. he was then taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. as for exactly where she was hot, we're still trying to figure that out. it could have been on the metro bus itself. it could have been right in the doorway or it could have been just outside. we're still -- police are still actively trying to work through all of that. as for the suspect, well, they got away. we don't have any description about the suspects nor do we have any motive but we do know the metro bus was just taken to the crime lab and on that metro

bus are cameras, both inside and outside. detectives are hoping that those cameras were rolling and they caught the suspects. we don't know if they were waiting at the bus stop possibly for this person. but if they too were passengers on the metro bus. still a lot of things we are working to actively sort out here on this scene. as i said this section is one block of alabama avenue. it's still closed. no idea exactly how long it will be closed but it will likely stay that way for at least the next half hour as we head into the beginning of the morning rush. mike? excuse me. >> that's okay. thanks kristin. live in southeast washington this morning. investigators suspect an immigration scam may be at the root of a 12-year-old girl's murder. jessica nguyen was found stabbed to death inside her family's home in gaithersburg last may and the stepfather, david rich hang is charged in the case. he and jessica's mother were embroiled in a bitter divorce.

d. c. unites charlie davies is suing a nightclub and the makers of red bull for $20 million. the suit stems from a fatal car crash that ended the player's chances of joining the 2010 world cup team for the u.s.. davies suffered numerous broken bones. 22-year-old ashley roberta of phoenix, maryland was killed in the crash. the suit claims the shadow room nightclub and red bull served excessive alcohol to the driver. the woman maria espinosa is receiving two years -- serving two years now. d. c. mayor gray will get a look at the earthquake damaged national coo need ideal later today. the -- cathedral later today. repairs to the cathedral are expected to cost at least $15 million. it is expected to reopen november 12th. at the epicenter of the august quake, people will decide if a new tax will pay for earthquake repairs. the federal government refuse today provide any disaster aid

to louisa county, virginia. so next month voters will decide on a referendum imposing a 4% tax on food and drinks in the restaurants. the money would go to fixing damaged schools. moms and dads if you have little ones, we want to warn you the next story has a few aimenings in it that some -- a few images in it that some may find disturbing, all of the animals in ohio are now president and account -- present and accounted for this morning. almost all of the animals had to be put down. greg black takes a look at what happened and whether this could have been prevented. >> reporter: 56 animals in all have been running loose in the ohio countryside. everything from bears to lions and tigers. this is how most of them ended up. their owner 62-year-old terry thompson is accused of freeing them before killings himself. deputies say they had no choice but to shoot the animals. >> if this had been a 9:00 or

volt spokesperson robert peterson tells 9news now -- hawk turned to the internet to find another dealer who was not charging the extra dealer fee. >> within hours, i had four or five people from dealerships around the country contacting me saying i bought it in fredericksburg because they had the exact model that i wanted. it worked out great. >> he loves the car and its small impact on the environment. >> right now i'm averaging 80.5 miles to the gallon. i've only used 35.6 gallons of gas. >> car shoppers across the country have been complaining online about the dealer up charges of $5,000, $10,000, even $20,000 over stickers. shop around before you sign on the bottom line.

>> 80 miles per gallon of gas? >> it's amazing. yes. >> unbelievable. and you drove one of these. you really like the feel of it? >> it's a great feel and the funny thing you have to remember with the electric cars is they're silent. be very careful with pedestrianed because they don't hear you coming. >> they only had 3900 sell. did the up charge have more to do it? >> probably more of the stoicker. the sticker is around $40,000. a little bit on the ricier side. you're not -- pricier side. you're probably not going to recoup the sales in your savings but it is the wave of the future. it is something that a lot of other models will probably rip off in the coming years if they try to bring the price point down with new technology. >> comparable right now to the prius? >> prius is like $25,000? >> the prius is a lot cheaper but what you tend to be seeing are a lot of luxury car buyers who are turning in their luxury

the closure again northbound route 301 between pierce road and substation road. go ahead and take route 2208 to 210 or stick to branch avenue to get around this problem. let's take you over to the district. right now police activity closes alabama avenue between 21st street and the suitlands parkway. over to the 14th street bridge on the northbound side. just the typicalledlies right now at -- delays right now at duke street and over the bridge span with the lanes open. to the train, if you're planning the take the penn line this morning on marc trains, you have delays on train 505. that is 15 to 20 minutes late and train 511 is running 30 to 40 minutes late. i need to change that there. just delays remember that on penn line 505 and 511. now time for a commuter alert. not very encouraging news with the bridges in the region. dozens of bridges have been deemed structurally deficient. that includes some big ones like the 14th street bridge and

also the group transportation for america issued the report. it says that 215 bridges in the region are in need of immediate repair. also on the structurally deficient list the key bridge. the memorial bridge, now that report breaks things down by state. and it finds that 12% of bridges in the district rank as deficient. 12%. compare that to 9% in virginia and just under 7% in maryland. it's important to know that structurally deficient does not mean a bridge is unsafe but it needs major repairs, some good news, spots like the 11th street bridge are undergoing repairs. we had a story on that 11th street bridge. that has been ongoing since december of 2009 and you know, they try and do these series of inspections basically between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 a.m. but you will have lane closures, check things out. >> exactly. just brings back the awful memories of what happened in minnesota a couple of years ago when it collapsed. >> remember that.

>> oh my god you looked at other deficient bridges in the country. >> might as well do the repairs before things like that happen. the head of metro's silver line thinks the first part of the projects will come in close to budget. that would be $2.8 billion from east fall church through tyson's corner to way lee avenue in reston but it is said -- he said it's going to be close. it could go as much as $150 million over budget. the first part of line should be open by 2013. the extension to dulles airport and ashburn will be open in about 2016. 6:34. up to speed on the breaking news now. a murder investigation going on in the district. >> the shooting happened a little after midnight. one man is dead and the killers are on the loose. >> the scene is along alabama avenue in southeast washington. right near the suitland parkway. kristin fisher's been there all morning and she's live now giving us an update. any more information yet kristin? >> reporter: no new information except that right now detectives here are focused on

tracking down these two suspects. and they are accused of shooting a passenger on a metro bus multiple times just after midnight this morning. now it happened at this bus stop just behind me right on the other side of that police car. we're not sure exactly where the shooting took place if it was on the bus, in the doorway or just outside at the fall bus stop. but this -- actual bus stop. but this man, an adult man was shot several times and he was transported to the hospital and pronounced dead on aryal. as for the suspects we don't have any description except for the fact they were described as being adults but here's the interesting part. that metro bus that was parked just over there, that metro bus has now been taken to a crime lab. and detectives are hoping that the cameras -- both inside and outside of the bus will have caught some of the shooting on tape and that way they'll be able to identify these two suspects. but likely we've got two people

out on the streets armed and believed to be dangerous. back to you. >> thanks kristin. kristin fisher live in southeast washington this morning. a northern virginia food pantry will be closed until november 1st. it's turning people away because it just doesn't have enough food to give away. the emergency assistance pantry in dumfries, virginia closed the doors yesterday. it blames a spike in demand coupled with a drop in donations. it's a scene repeated at other food banks in the region. organizers say et was tough. >> it was heart-breaking, a very difficult decision to make. having families come up to the door and seeing them leave in tears. it's very hard. >> the food pantry was inundated with requests for help after hurricane irene and tropical storm lee hit several weeks ago. here's a list of some of the most needed items -- if you'd like to make a donation to the food pantry, go

on staying healthy. this morning, the growing link between diabetes and obesity. joining me now is dr. kund ra from the washington hospital center. thank you for joining us this morning. and getting up early. >> thank you for having me. >> there's some startling statistics out there projections that one in three americans will have diabetes by 2050. what's behind that startling increase? >> so if you look at the number right now it's about one in eight americans now. by 2050, that's a sharp rise. we're talking about a third of the population statistically. the link between that there are two issues driving that. one is obesity is an epidemic and it is rising but also as the population ages by 2050 people are going to live much longer. as we age, diabetes is one of

the predominantly type ii diabetes. >> i'm from a family that's been afflicted with diabetes, all perceived it as being essentially a genetic disease but people are getting diabetes just -- well, not just because but in part because they are obese. tell me a little bit about that. >> yeah, that's absolutely true. when you look at genetics and diabetes, type 2 diabetes which is the more common adult onset is genetically driven but if you have a family history with diabetes, your risk of developing diabetes may be only 39% to 40% more. if you have both parents with diabetessing maybe about 50% more but nonetheless we know that predominantly type 2 diabetes is linked to insulin and resistance. the best way to prevent diabetes is through diet and exercise regardless. >> a lot of folks nowadays are turning to gastric bypass to control the weight and also

control diabetes potentially but that doesn't necessarily solve the problem. does it? >> not necessarily. we are using gastric bypass more commonly particularly in the patients who have large body mass indexes. so that's you know kilograms per meter squared of 35 or more and they have other problems like diabetes, high blood pressure or more. in the patients they can very quickly lose weight but the key as you said is keeping the weight off and maintaining your good diet and exercise habits so that in 10 or 20 years you haven't put back the weight and now back to the diabetes and taking insulin and meditation. >> good food choices, thank you doctor for coming in this morning we really appreciate it. >> thank you. >> and you can take part in this weekend's diabetes walk, it is saturday morning at nationals park. andrea, monika and yours trillo are emceeing. -- truly are emceeing. the registration begins at 8:00 and the walk begins at 10:00. you can learn more by going to
