strikes, tightening the area of where he was. shortly after the death, video of gadhafi's bloodied body was broadcast throughout the arab world. and from president obama. >> it belongs to the people of libya. l this -- this is a moment for them for all those suffered and lost under gadhafi and look forward to the promise of a new day. >> reporter: reports are that one of gadhafi's son was also killed today in sirte, while another son was wounded and captured by the rebel forces. >> thank you. gadhafi's death is just the latest chapter in the arab springs that turned to summer and now fall. it all started last december when people started protesting the lack of jobs there.

similar protests popped up in egypt. on january 14, they fled to saudi arabia. but the end of the month, people were protesting in yemen, jordan, and libya as well. on february 11, egyptian president mubarak stepped down. on august 28, libya's national transitional council announced they would be moving into the nation's capitol and then just today, moammar gadhafi was found and killed by the rebels. there are still protests in yemen, syria, saudi arabia, iran, and algeria. another day of dramatic testimony in the trial of the former montgomery county first grade teacher. she's accused of physically abusing six of her students. we have a live look from the circuit court. of course, they adjourned for the day, but not before we heard some serious fireworks. >> reporter: well, derek, that's for sure. it this case has been kind of like watching a tennis match. for the first two days, we

heard testimony from 6 and 7- year-old children who took the stand. now, you know that is highly unusual. they told consistent hard breaking stories of alleged abuse and the psychological aftermath. and then late yesterday and today, susan burke testified in her own defense. she was articulate at times defiant in denying the allegations. and then late today, the jury heard from the principal who hired her and a fellow first grade teacher. that's when the fireworks came in. both testified that burke was not always truthful. and that was very damaging testimony potentially. now closing arguments will come in the morning and then this case will go to the jury. live from rockville, andrea mccaren, 9news now. >> thank you, andrea. well, a 4-year-old girl used mattresses to climb over the barricade of dry wall and now, the couple who put the two sisters there are facing the judge.

>> reporter: a couple is undergoing drug treatment therapy inside the county jail. today, they plead guilty to three counts of felony child abuse. >> it's clear that it is a drug induced neglect. >> reporter: it's now clear to prosecutors that they are both guilty of felony child abuse. today, the two admitted to trapping moore's three young girls ages 4, 2, and just 4- months-old in an upstairs bedroom inside this bristol home while they went on a drug- induced binge. what is still unclear is if this mother will get her children back. and this is the second time that she has lost children to neglect. court records show in 2005 that christina moore lost her then 2- year-old twin boys after they were found wandering near the landfill while she laid passed out in a trailer nearby. >> and she should not have that. >> reporter: sentencing will be in january. 9news now. a mixed day for the markets

on wall street today. the dow was up about 37 points. nasdaq lost 5 points and the s&p 500 gained five points. there's some good news from the irs today. starting with tax year 2012. you'll be able to put more money in your pension plan. the limit for 401k's, 403b and most 457 plans will go up by $500 to become $17,000. well, for students still far from retiring, the news not so good. for the first time in history, the amount of student loans taken out last year passed the $1 billion mark. an expert says that they have everything to do with the state of the economy. >> any recession that will go on into several years, it is not uncommon that initially at lot of people will tend to come back to school. they are hoping that they can position themselves for better jobs, when the jobs do show up on the radar, and that they will be able to pay the money back. >> reporter: now, according to the federal reserve bank of new

york, the average student loan is up about 63% from 10 years ago. the number of people applying for unemployment benefits for the first time went down last week. that's the fourth week in a row that the rate was lower. but economists are saying we are still about 28,000 jobs away from a level that would signal any kind of sustainable job growth. eric canter today cemented his opposition to much of president obama's jobs creation plan. and the virginia republican told the business round table in richmond that he views much of the president's plan as just another expensive stimulus bill. but that there is bipartisan support for parts of his plan, including tax incentives for businesses that hire the military veterans. >> well, the veterans piece, we have passed the bill in the house, which actually echos the president's intent. we agree with the president. we need to make it more

attractive and provide incentives for them for employers to hire a veteran. so again, a part of the job's bill that we agree on. >> canter said that the house next week will take up another bill for which there is bipartisan support. that measure would scrap the 3% withholding requirement on businesses that work for the government. if you put the rate of inflation and unemployment together, you'll get what the government unofficially called the misery index. and last month, they hit their highest level in about 28 years. and that could explain, you know, why the number of republicans are taking the anti- depressants and they are skyrocketing. according to the centers for disease control, about 11% of the american public over the age of 12, that they take some form of anti-depressant medication and women are about 2.5 times more likely to take them than men. yes, she had a dream about standing there for the very next day, playing the birthday in the cash 5 lottery game.

we have breaking news coming out of st. mary's county. right now they are on the scene of the police-involved shooting. a spokesperson says that the officer though is not injured. that's the good news. we are told that they were responding to a domestic assault when some sort of a dispute ensued and the officer shot and killed the adult man in the situation. and they will continue to follow this breaking news and britain you more information when it comes in out of st. mary's county. we've got a commuter alert to tell you about. students from construction work, the outer loop of the beltway is near alexandria. they will be down to just one lane of traffic tonight on the outer loop just before the telegraph road exit and they will shut down at 9:00 tonight. a second lane will close at 11, leaving just that one lane for

right now, they are scrambling trying to figure out how to save china's great wall that is crumbling. both legal and illegal mining, they are close to this side and they are to be blamed for this. they stand for 1,000 miles for tourists. they look like they are potentially on their way to foreclosure. they were sent mailers to come here to the convention hall at national harbor and they will try to work out new terms this week. >> well, i was reluctant to

come. >> and you can change the interest rate and the term of the loan. >> reporter: they say that the company is trying to qualify struggling customers for workouts. they needed to change. >> reporter: they were moved from a loan down to 3.25 with a new 30-year term saving about $300 a month. >> i'll tell anyone to come to your mortgage people here and see what they could do for you. >> reporter: in capitol heights, i'm scott broom, 9news now. a food bank in dumfries put out a call for help last night. >> 9news now is happy that we were able to help a little bit with this. our peggy fox is back out there live tonight with an update on the situation. though shelves are looking better, peggy. >> yes, it's been very exciting as they are getting ready to restock a lot of things there. the activity back there, the kids are restocking the shelves. we've got a lot of volunteers today. and take a look at why they

closed in the first place because of the shelves. there was a 50% increase in demand and they simply did not have the food to give out. it was a heartbreaking decision to close and they decided that they had to stay closed until november 1 to get their supplies replenished. but when people heard the news, we started reporting this information and people started coming in, and with bags and bags of food. and it has been very exciting today. but they need more than just the shelves filled. >> yeah, we go through this much in half a day. i mean, these boxes here, we go through that much in half a day sometimes. once it is gone, it really goes out there quickly. >> did you get them all filled? >> yes. >> we need everything, all these shelves, all this stuff. we need them all filled up. >> reporter: so that is linda, one of the volunteers,

restocking. it's been very exciting. this is rebecca mcgee, the program director here. tell me about the supplies you've gotten in today. >> the response from the community has been overwhelming. we have received over 12,000 pounds of food brought in since tuesday morning, which is incredible. and in that amount of time, we typically receive maybe about 500 pounds, 1,000 the most. but this has been incredible. we live in a very generous community. >> this is francis harris, the executive director. tell us about the financial contributions. >> in the last two days we have gotten over $55,000 of money for the food pantry. and we can stretch it even further now because we are buying in bulk stocking up the shelves. it's just wonderful. >> it's great to hear. and we would like to contribute as well. again, the foundation is a part of who owns channel 9. the gazette will be sending you a $5,000 check to help out as well. we wanted to be a part of this effort and a part of the community. we hope that helps. >> oh, that's going to be great. thank you very much. thank you so much. >> and thanks to the community

in the 10 to 15 range overnight. so turning cooler, still breezy tonight. not windy. l chilly overnight. cool, but nice on friday and crisp for you for high school football. now, that means wear a sweatshirt. for tonight, breezy and chilly. low temperatures in the 40s. but only about 10 to 15, even downtown we're talking about upper 40s, though it is cool. a different story for you tonight. 49 even in articlington. 46 in rockville. 47 in bowie. i think even they had sneak into the upper 40s tonight. mid-40s as you go out into reston and fairfax and sterling. 44 in leesburg and 4 had in manassas -- 44 in manassas. partly cloudy, breezy, chilly, grab your sunglasses. and the winds will still be a little breezy in the morning, the southwest 10 to 15. but by the afternoon, partly cloudy and cool. high temperatures around 60.

winds are out of the northwest at 10. that's the nice fall day. all right, your zone forecast. we'll put them at 48 tomorrow. upper 50s for hagerstown, martinsburg and winchester. much more sunshine west of the i-81 corridor. and a lot of clouds out there today. 60 in warrenton and manassas and 60 in leesburg. downtown, we'll probably make 60 or 61 in gaithersburg. the low 60s in southern maryland and annapolis and actually there is a small craft advisory for this day and off title potomac all over friday. we'll break it down for you to start. lots of sunshine though. 68 to 63 by evening. but not windy tomorrow. all right, we'll talk about the next three days. great on saturday, 62. 65 on sunday. even a little bit milder on sunday. next seven days. monday, we do have a frontal system that is very weak. and i produced a couple sprinkles, dropping the temperatures for just a minute, back into the 60-degree range,

all right, we've been talking a lot about the redskins quarterback situation, but that's not the only position that mike shanahan has to worry about this week. how about the entire left side of the offensive line? by the 11th play on sunday's game, the redskins had lost their starting left guard and left tackle. everybody shifted over for the rest of the game. and shanahan was pleased with their play considering the circumstances, but now that has to be completely reconfigured by sunday. >> we got a chance to play, you know, about three quarter -- three quarters last week. it's getting in practice this week and going out there,

playing together. and being able to perform. >> it will be tough, but i feel strongly about the guys that we're bringing in. those are the guys that credited us when i was in. those were the guys that were going to try to win. >> and hopefully a week of practice are seeing a few days out here in new positions that will help the redskins offense get their running game going after the starters went down on sunday. it was pretty much non-exist taint. good news for the teams as they do get back tim hightower. up in philadelphia for an eastern conference showdown, hoping to extend their season opening win streak to 6. the players have been saying they are not 100% satisfied with their play. three of their five wins came in overtime and tonight, it might be no different because they are taking on a flier's squad that has been cruising this season. so it will be a true test. >> we have seen their defense for the last couple of years. they are playing an aggressive style and it will be tough on us. they are a good team.
