that means if you're heading out to any of the friday night football games or maybe even some activities late in the afternoon, you definitely want the keep that in mind with a bit of breeze. the current temperatures though are as i said are on the cool side but the highs today should be pretty good. about 62 for manassas and about 63 for fredericksburg and even 62 in the baltimore area. definitely see a cool night tonight. today, we'll get down into the -- into the 60s and move on up to the middle range 60s by the time we get to the end of the weekend. so yes a very nice finish to what's going to be our best weekend so far this morning. now a look at that morning drive. thank you so much olga. good morning everybody. we're taking a look first at the beltway. all around town everything's fine with the exception of overnight construction on the north side here and on the south side on the inner loop at 395. they should be clearing up as we speak. the west side of town, 66 i'm going to try to get it there.

there are no problems to report on the west side of town if you're heading in on the dulles toll road, on 66 we're looking good, entire west side of town through tyson's corner and anondale. a live look at 66 first if you're coming in from centreville all the way to route 123, this is what it looks like. quite a few people out but no delays right now and all lanes are open. here's what it looks like on 95 northbound from newington to springfield on to 395. you will be okay. there are no problems at the 14th street bridge. in fact let's take a look live here on the northbound side. nice and quiet into downtown across the potomac river. pretty shot, no problems here as you head into the downtown area. coming up in my next report, a look into maryland at 5:10. back to you. thanks monika. today nato may be announcing it is scaling back its operations in libya after the killing of deposed dictator muammar gadhafi. libya revolutionary fighters found gadhafi hiding in a drainage ditch yesterday after his convoy was hit by an air strike. when he was trying to flee from his hometown of sirte.

uncertainty both here and in europe on the u.s. market and the economy. you've got the money. if you've got it you can check more of it into a 401k without getting hit with taxes. the irs is raising the maximum contribution that workers can make. it will rise by $500 to $17,000 next year. the increase is required by law to adjust for inflation. the most recent data shows only 9% of people with 401ks contribute the maximum amount. and the reason why, a lot of people don't have $17,000 just lying around. >> exactly. dr. greenspan again, is he delivering the speech here? washington? >> he is. yep, here in washington. >> wow, that's going to be very interesting. bank fees, we know everybody hates them particularly mike. get the blood pressure medication because they're really hard to track and we'll get into that. >> thanks jess. well, there's some good news for hungry people in prince william county.

>> that's right a food bank was forced to shut down a few days ago will be able to reopen thanks to many of your donations. 9news now reporter kristin fisher is live in lorton with more on the groups that are helping out. good morning kristin. >> reporter: good morning mike. good morning andrea. this is the capital area food bank's northern virginia facility and in just about an hour, we should be seeing lots of volunteers coming here and loading up a food truck full of food and then they're going to drive it down to another food pantry down in dumfries. and the reason for this is because they've been hit so hard in the last few weeks. really the problem is just a surge in demand and a lack of supply. now the food bank is called the action in community through service food pantry or acts. the problem has been a surge in demand and nearly 50% increase. largely due to last month's flooding. so the food bank put out the call for help earlier this week and now, the community has delivered. get this -- in two days,

they've received 2,000 pounds of donated food and $60,000 including a $5,000 grant from the gannett foundation. >> this is america. nobody should go hungry. nobody should wonder am i going to eat today? >> that's why i came because i couldn't imagine being a mother that says i'm sorry, we don't have dinner tonight. >> reporter: those were just some of the volunteers who were driving in here -- driving to that food pantry yesterday to drop off food and monetary donations. and you know, because of their generosity, this food pantry is going to be able to open up much earlier than expected. initially it was going to have to stay closed until november 1st. but now, it's going to be able to open next tuesday around 1:00 in the afternoon. so some great news down here. we hope to bring it to you live our next tape will be coming up at 5:30 but we should see the food truck at 6:00 a.m.

handle with a light jacket or just something to be that barrier between you and the breeze moving on through. the forecast though for the entire weekend looks great. we've had a pretty good stretch the last three weekends and managed to keep things dry and we've kept our temperatures fairly comfortable the whole stretch and it's going to be another one of those to come. right now though the morning temperatures are on the cool side. you definitely want to bundle up the young ones as they head to the bus stop. you might need that light jacket and sunglasses this morning but come this afternoon, things are going to be very pleasant. mostly sunny skies by noontime. we push those upper 50s, lower 60s. we should settle right around 62 degrees for reagan national later on this afternoon and i'll back it down a little bit after sunset. the conditions though are going to be fairly consistent. nothing showing up here on the satellite and radar loop. a few of the early morning clouds though but mainly clear skies with the afternoon and evening hours. that means we're looking at a sunny morning, a fairly cool start as the temperatures have had the opportunity to drop down overnight. but rest assured, those passing

clouds later on this afternoon not packing any moisture for us and a great finish to the workweek. in fact a fantastic weekend just ahead. right now our temperatures are sitting right around 48 degrees for reagan national. only 46 for cumberland but look back toward pittsburgh. 42 and the colder air should stay mainly on the west side of the mountains. however some of the outer lying sub you ares especially north and west of town, some pretty chilly lows over the next couple of nights. highs today, everyone should hit the 60-degree mark, in fact most of us should be around 61, 62 degrees just inside and outside the beltway. lows tonight again on the cool side. especially after sunset for some of the late friday night football games. yes, you might want to have a little blanket on your lap with the early hours. the slight and radar -- satellite and radar as i mentioned is quiet but the futurecast stays quiet as well. not thinking we're going to have any rocky weather for the short-term forecast. here's the next three days. very cool morning for today. but things will shape up quite

nicely in the afternoon lower 60s. still stay in the lower 60s with even more sunshine for form and then the temperatures inch up to the middle 60s by sunday. the seven day forecast is going to stay fairly consistent. around the seasonal norms for this time of the year. we normally see about 61, 62 degrees and push up into the middle 60s but i don't anticipate any rain in the forecast until about monday. monika? well, if you're planning the head around the beltway right now. it's early enough that things look fine. the north side to have town. planning to head over to let's say the beltway. you've got that early morning construction cleared up that's a good sign. let's start off first a little further north at new hampshire avenue at route 108 in the sandy spring area. further south to the beltway and new hampshire avenue at the beltway. still shouldn't find any problems leaving 95 on the outer loop of the beltway

as well. who's going to be involved in this? >> in this year we have dozens of groups that joined us and we have been working for months to organize events and on our website, foodday.org, you can find all the events happening around the city and they will start tomorrow. on saturday, there will be columbia heights and on sunday and on food day itself on october 24th. there will be dozens of events from morning until the evening. from national archives with an open house in the morning, breakfast for the city, the central kitchen celebrating and many more. >> so you can go and actually eat food, are you talking about food? what are some of the events that will actually happen? >> you can do both. busboys and bloomberg's will have film screenings and talks. there will be a big festival on k street and it will be from 13th to 14th street on pearson and square and there will be 30

good morning and welcome back to 9news now. i'm andrea roane. >> and i'm mike hydeck. if you poke your nose outside the get the paper or do whatever. it is brisk. temperatures in the 40s many in some places even a little bit colder. especially cold in the traffic department isn't it monika? >> very cold there too. >> olga is sitting on her hands. not because she's been outside but because the weather department is as cold as the traffic department. >> you will notice the same thing this morning. we've had clear skies. fairly light wind just a little bit of a breeze but that's been enough to allow the temperatures to really drop down. the weather planner for today, well it's looking pretty good in terms of all the sunshine that's going to be sticking around but don't be fooled by the sun though. it's going to feel a little bit cool today. nothing that we can't handle

though. all temperatures are in the 50s in and around if beltway. yes a few of the 40s but for the most part slightly warmer the closer you get to the bay. we're going to keep the temperatures in the 50s for most of the morning, around noontime though we should start to leap into the lower 60s. the next three days ahead is going to feature similar conditions. 62 for tomorrow as well we're going to see is middle range 60s by the time we get into sunday and i'm tracking some even warmer temperatures as we get closer to monday and tuesday. but, rain will reenter our forecast. monika? well, we're going to first take a look at the beltway all around town with what we call friday morning light. there are no problems. let's zoom into the district and show you what it looks like right in the downtown area. constitution avenue along the mall, no problems on 14th street. or down here on the freeway. let's take a live look at the 14th street bridge heading north on 395. no problems all the way to this point leaving the beltway into downtown looking goods on 95 as

well coming pretty much newington to -- up from newington to springfield. this thyme the west side of town. here's the dulles toll road. i-66. no real problems. a little bit of slow traffic because of construction on the inside of the beltway here. we'll take a live look at the american legion bridge. heading south leaving bethesda or north leaving tyson's corner, this is what you should expect. really no big problems, 270 much the same from frederick. in my next report, a little peek into the district at 5:38. andrea and mike? this morning police in alexandria are investigating their first murder of the year. officers found if man dying just after 10:00 last night. he was lying in the 1200 block of white street. doctors couldn't save him at the hospital. police are asking witnesses to contact them and help them solve this case. an investigation is underway into an apartment fire in southwest washington. the fire reportedly started in a fifth floor complex of the

unit on delaware avenue. witnesses tell 9news now fire crews cut down some tree branches in order to get their equipment close enough to the building. it doesn't appear anyone was seriously injured. earlier this week, we told you about a local food pantry forced to shut down when its shelves went bare. the food bank in dumfries, virginia got wiped out by a sudden need of people whose homes were washed away by tropical storm lee last month. now they hope to be able to reopen soon and that's going to happen because of an influx of donations. 9news now reporter kristin fisher is live to tell us more on that. good morning kristin. >> reporter: good morning mike. you know it's really amazing what can happen when a community comes together. right now we're at the capital area food bank's virginia distribution center. and we're here because we're waiting for a truck and this truck should be arifing in about half an hour and we're going to see volunteers loading this truck up with food and taking it to the food bank in dumfries that's in trouble.

but you can see right now it's pretty quiet here. not a whole lot of activity going on but again hopefully that will change in half an hour. the food bank is called acts or the action in community through service food pantry. and they have been out of food. if you can look at these shelves. i mean just completely bare out of food since monday. so everybody that depended on that food bank for food hasn't been able to get it. so they put out a call for help and the community delivered in a very big way. in two days, get this -- they've received 2,000 pounds of donated food. and $60,000 and that includes a $5,000 grant from the gannett foundation. yesterday lots of people in the community were dropping off boxes and boxes of food at the pantry and now today they're going to get this huge influx of food from the capital area food bank. so they should be able to open in just one week next tuesday and that is a lot better than

flooding from irene and tropical storm lee. today, d. c. mayor gray will contact fema to provide emergency assistance with repairs of the national cathedral. the mayor took a tour of the damage there thursday. the cathedral was damaged to the tune of $15 million from first the earthquake and then heavy rains soon after. it's scheduled to reopen on november 12th. 4:34. time for another your money. >> jessica doyle is here with a look at oh yes, bank fees. >> yes, that little thing. you moe people really are tuning into bank fees nowadays. not just mike and andrea and myself. >> "occupy wall street" they're holding up signs. >> it's a big deal and the latest impact has been fees for debit card usage of bank of america but it's pretty hard to figure out what the bank is actually charging you for. our partners at "usa today" report that almost all bank websites prominently disclose the fees they don't charge but not the ones they do charge.

fees were particularly hard to find for the cost of taking a withdrawal out of an out of network atm or the cost of closing an account. something to remember. a lot of us are downright miserable nowadays because of economy and there's actually a way toll track that. -- to track that. if you put the rates of inflation and unemployment together, you get what the government unofficially calls the misery index. last month it hit the highest level in 23 years. that would be 1983. remember reagan, a tough recession. economy was actually humming and people were getting back to work. all of that misery could be a reason why the number of americans taking antidepressants is skyrocketing, according to the centers for disease control. 11% of americans over the age of 12 take some form of antidepressant and women are two and a half times more likely to take them than men

good morning. welcome back to 9news now. it is october 21st, breast cancer awareness month, lots going on the raise awareness -- to raise awareness. yet another key to the cure event at the chevy chase and saks and i'm helping people open up the treasure box and they paid for the key and got to pick out a gift. but the money goes to support the suburban hospital. >> what are the keys for in. >> keys to the cure. >> oh, okay. >> they get a little gift for participating in that. >> excellent. >> and earlier in the day i was at the emcee for the gw breast care center and they were saluting the patients. and it was a really wonderful

event. i met the grant family and three generations of breast cancer for that family. >> oh my goodness. >> and finally today is national mammography day. participating radiologists are offering discounts mammograms. so some busy busy months. >> sure is. it's a cold month as we wrap up october. >> quiet in the weather department. >> fight the cold. >> clear, quiet. cool. we'll take what we can get when we can get it but you definitely need to be prepared for some of the cold temperatures outside. yes you want that jacket with you stepping out. the forecast for today is going to be fairly consistent. we've got the sunshine beginning to creep on through after sunrise. things will be quite nice so the conditions will r going to be good for us -- are going to be good for us but the temperatures not budging that much. we've had the wind for most of the morning and continue that into the afternoon which means although the temperatures are around 50 degrees at this hour we're not going to budge too much too quickly at this hour.

in fact by noontime, several locations still slightly below 60 degrees, i think by afternoon though most of the metro area should see the 60 degrees or at least into the low 60s. grab the sunglassessing the cool start will continue through the late morning hours with just a few more clouds bay late afternoon. nothing the deter us though. in fact we're looking for a great weekend. temperatures stay in the 60s and conditions stay dry. right now about 48 degrees across college park. we're looking at 46 for arlington. 48 for the reagan national airport. and even 47 down toward the portions of our viewing region to the south. the highs today are going to be fairly comfortable. this time of year we normally see about 60 degrees. so this is right around the norm for us and again the conditions are going to stay dry into the afternoon. tonight will be another chilly one as well. partly cloudy skies tonight but still, the winds back off a little bit. still from the north and northwest but the cool conditions will per sit overnight tonight as we drop

down into the middle range 40s and even the lower 40s to the north and to the west. futurecast, no problems for us over the next 24 to 48 hours, in fact keep mainly sunny skies for today and tomorrow and build in more cloud cover monday and tuesday. the rain chances going to go up as well. if you have any plans tonight, i think you will be just fine. a little bit on the cool side and most of the activities for tomorrow, great conditions as well with temperatures staying around the middle 60s in toward the end of the weekend. we are looking at a pretty good stretch the next three days ahead. that means cool conditions for today and tomorrow. but still nice with the sunshine around. we'll keep it mostly sunny on sunday to wrap up the weekend and push toward those middle 60s but in the extended seven day forecast, there's a rain chance on the way and those details are coming up. now a look at the morning ride with monika. overall things aren't really looking too bad this friday morning. just one heads-up. the brunswick lines 870 and 890 at this moment stopped in

into the upper range 40s inside the beltway and expecting temperatures to stay around 50 degrees for the 9:00 hour and we are definitely looking at a lot of sunshine into the afternoon a few more passing clouds may move on through but not so bad. in fact highs today should make it into the lower range 60s around 5:00, 6:00 hour. re-wide though it's a little bit on the cool side. we have some moisture moving on shore and the temperatures a little bit healthier, 50 degrees out the easton but only 48 for washington and 46 down toward fredericksburg even looking at about 48 for hagerstown. the chill will continue through most of the morning. futurecast keeps most of the clouds away except for the high thin clouds. not packing too much moisture. even as we head in towards the afternoon and evening hours, still plenty of sunshine so it should be a great night for some friday night football. and we're looking at a fantastic weekend ahead. here's where i'm expecting the highs to top out later on today. about 60 degrees for those of us in the gaithersburg area. we should see only 55 for hagerstown and about 62 for

manassas. but right around the 60-degree mark overall. the seven day forecast though, it's not bad. we've had a wonderful stretch of beautiful weekends for the last two, going to add a third one to the stretch here taking temperatures into the lower 60s on saturday afternoon. it will still feel a little bit cool but come sunday we kick in some more of the south and southwest winds boosting the temperatures back into the middle 60s. we'll sustain that into monday as well but by monday you'll notice a few changes on the way. with the next system coming if our direction. we get a little bit more cloud cover by wednesday and opportunity for some late day showers and storms moving on through though severe weather is not expected but the moisture will continue. but at least we'll stay mainly dry through the short-term. andrea? i'll take it thanks olga. can math actually be dramatic? you might not think so. but i spent some time with some kindergarteners who will show you it is indeed possible and

>> yes, we do. it's cool and cold out there this morning. mainly because of our clear skies. we've seen the temperatures drop but the good news is we're going to keep things on the cool side into the afternoon and the evening hours. we're definitely looking at a forecast that's going to stay clear. futurecast doesn't have anything on it just a little bit of moisture to the north and to the west but i thymes of that is going to stay -- think that most of that is going to stay there for now at least. highs fairly average right around 60 degrees is where we shown this time of the -- should be this time of the year. high inside the beltway into the lower 60s and upper 50s to the north and toward the west. definitely the next seven days ahead looks pretty good. we're keeping the lower 60s for tomorrow as well dry for your saturday activities. middle 60s for sunday but come monday, little bit more cloud cover and some moisture moves on in and yes i'm checking a rain chance by monday afternoon. monika? thank you so much olga. good
