[ people chanting ] >> reporter: outside the white house, dozens of libyan americans celebrated the death of muammar gadhafi into the night. erupting into chants and waving american and libyan flags. young and old alike marked a turning point in their nation's history. across the world -- thousands took to the streets in libya as fireworks lit up the night sky. this video shows gadhafi's final moments alive. rebel forces captured and shot him thursday as he tried to escape his hometown of sirte. in pakistan this morning, secretary of state hillary clinton pledged full u.s. support for a new libyan government. >> the death of colonel gadhafi has brought to a close a very unfortunate chapter in libya's

to the d. c. farmers market today to figure out what started a fire. this was the scene around 10:00 last night at 6th street and florida avenue in northeast. firefighters had to cut through steel bars the attack this fire. several vendors' stands were damaged. luckily no one was hurt. the market is expected to remain open while repairs are being made. at 6:04 now. a look at campaign 2012 in maryland. lawmakers now signed off on a new congressional district map which puts the sixth district into play for the democrats. more than a third of montgomery county is in that district. incumbent republican rosco bartlett will run for an 11th term. former councilwoman duchie says she will run for the democratic nomination and fellow democrat is getting close to a decision on whether or not he'll run. he says he's going to make his announcement coming up next week. well, thanks to the

generosity of channel 9 viewers and the gannett foundation, a food pantry in northern virginia will be able to serve the public. wednesday it was forced to close its doors. >> this is a great story. this morning it's getting help from a big truck loaded with supplies adding to the list, kristin fisher is live in lorton, virginia with more on that side of the story. good morning kristin. >> reporter: good morning. well you know the food pantry in dumfries, that one that's called is in trouble and it's called acts. and get this -- in the last two days, they have raised -- excuse me they've received 2,000 pounds of donated food and $60,000 worth of donations and that includes a $5,000 grant from the gannett foundation. and because of all of those types of donations they're going to be able to reopen next tuesday. whereas before all this they were going to have to reopen first week of november. now one of the organizations that has been helping and working hard to make this possible is the capital area food bank and joining me now is

roberto and we're here standing in front of the virginia distribution center. what are you guys going to be doing and what are you getting ready to do right now? >> good morning, the capital area of food bank, we provide food to all nonprofit organizations around the region. and today we're going to be providing actually commodities, fresh produce, bread and all the products we have in our warehouse to the acts organization. >> reporter: why did you all go to such great lengths to make this happen for them? >> actually, it's -- that's what we do. we wanted to make sure that we provide food for those who need it and acts actually partnered with the capital area food banks and we provide food to them. >> reporter: across the board, especially in light of the economy and the natural disasters, have you all seen a surge in demand as well? >> reporter: oh certainly. we have seen an increase in

top 1%? the top 1% -- >> what the cutoff is. >> over $1 million right? >> just to enter. >> just to get in. >> i say over $100 million. >> $100 million? i'm guessing. >> $350,000. that's what you need. that number is according to the new irs numbers, this elite group earned nearly 17% of the nation's income and paid roughly 37% of the income tax or $1.3 trillion just so you know. well, the nation's biggest employer is cutting some benefits. the "new york times" reports that wal-mart is rolling back coverage for part-time workers and is significantly raising premiums for many full-timers. the reason here is rising costs for wal-mart. all future part-time workers working less than 24 hours a week will no longer qualify for health benefits. if you work 24 to 33 hours, you can't include a spouse but children can still be covered with the health insurance. many restaurants at walt disney world will charge a fee now to diners who make

going to reach for the sunglasses as our temperatures slide near 60 degrees by later on this afternoon. in fact the low 60ed is what i'm expecting. definitely see a calm night tonight. mainly clear skies. northwest winds and the opportunity for the temperatures to drop again. i think tonight, is going to be a lot colder than the last several days. here's what you need toshort-te we're looking at a sunny morning. wrapping up our friday with a very nice finish. but, we will see a little bit of the cool start transition with some of the sunshine through midday and late day. a couple of the clouds will pass on through but in all a very nice afternoon. fairly comfortable as the temperatures get into the 60s. the weekend continues that trend. lower to middle 60s by sunday. and then tracking little bit of a change on the way for monday. the current temperatures in the 40s for the most part. moving quickly into the 50s over the next couple of hours. we should top out around 61 degrees for reagan national and same for andrews air force base and into the lower 60s across the board for most of us.

ever start keeps on rolling and they finally got the firepower last night from the great number 8. >> the caps were in philadelphia taking on the flyers. it was tied at 1 near the end of the first period until alex ovechkin, remember him? he hasn't been so noticeable lately. he scores on the rebound. caps lead is 2-1 after one period. then in the third, it was the great number 8 again. this time, from far away on a power play. his second goal of the game. caps top the flyers 5-2 and now a perfect 6-0 on the season. d. c. hosts detroit tomorrow night. and the world series takes a day off as everyone heads south to the dallas metroplex. the fall classic now tied at one game apiece. last night's game in game two featuring great pitching, no score in the 7th inning and for the second night in a row, allen craig hits a pinch hit rbi single for st. louis. the cards go up 1-0 and stays that way until the top of the 9th. texas got two singles and two

plenty of sunshine through sunday and seeing temperatures in the mid 60s. monika? a live look from sky 9 right now at the accident in colesville. it happened on new hampshire avenue. as you can see some traffic is getting by right now. this happened at bonafint road in colesville on new hampshire avenue. there were just minor injuries, two cars involved and they should have the entire roadway cleared up fairly shortly. we'll show you what it looks like on a map right now. if you do choose to use an alternate route. just veer off on to route 198 and good hope road instead. we'll take another look at a map. this time it's metro. where we've got -- unscheduled track work on the blue and yellow lines between l'enfant plaza and arlington cemetery. i'm just hearing that because of some police activity on the mark brunswick lines at the jermantown station, expect 10 to 25 minute delays on the

supporters in the senate will try again. no relief for everyone struggling to get by living paycheck to paycheck. as a whole though, the washington region has the lowest poverty rate in the nation according to the census bureau nearly 8.5% of the people in the region live below the poverty line here. that's just ahead of honolulu at 9.1%. which is a far cry from the most impoverished metro area in the nation which is mcallen, texas, 33% of the people there live in the poverty area. and with so many people dealing with tough times, food pantries across the region are seeing a spike in demand and a drop if supplies. one in -- in supplies, one in dumfries, virginia closed its doors this weekend. >> but it is going to reopen thanks to the amazing outpouring of support including plenty of here from channel 9 viewers. thank you for that. kristin fisher is live in lorton, virginia. good morning kristin. >> reporter: that's right, good morning. well, right now volunteers are inside this distribution center, the virginia

distribution center for the capital area food bank, they're loading up and getting ready to get the food on to a truck. they're weighing it and getting it ready to head on down to the food pantry in dumfries. it's called acts. they haven't had food there since monday. but now, they're going to be getting a nice fresh load and joining me now, megan -- excuse me, amanda with the capital area food bank. amanda, how much food you guys are going to be donating today. >> well, we don't have the full foal yet but we're anticipating about 8,000 pounds and at least 2,000 of that will be fresh produce and bread. >> reporter: in particular this one was really in trouble. are you seeing a spike in food pantries and food banks in this area needing demand? >> definitely. for the last at least two years, ever since the economy has really been sour, the agencies have been reporting

alexandria, virginia are investigating the first murder of the year. they found a man shot near white and west street last nigh. he later died at the hospital. police are asking witnesses to contact them and help solve this case. right now, the hunt is on for two men d. c. police say were involved in that deadly shooting on a metro bus in southeast. we told you about it this time yesterday. 22-year-old demetrius thompson was killed while getting on the w 4 bus heading to his porous house. family member -- mother's house. family members say he just got his commercial driver's license and was trying to find a job. mayor gray is asking fema to help pay for repairs to the washington national cathedral. the tremor in august caused damages in the millions of dollars. mayor gray says the first phase will cost at least $15 million and take years to finish. >> you know, we as a government look forward to doing what we

can to try to make sure the restoration is complete and it's done as quickly as we possibly can. >> the cathedral is scheduled to reopen november 12th. jessica doyle is here with another your money report. >> she is indeed and we're learning what is inside steve jobs' new biography that's coming out. >> that's right. we can all agree steve jobs has been arguably one of the most fascinating people in america. and a massive biography of the man who made apple is due out on monday just weeks after his death. there's some really surprising insights uncovered by the author walter isaacson. he was often bullied in school. jobs stopped going to church at the age of 13 after he saw a photo of disturbing children on the cover of life magazine. later he spent years studying zen bide him. instead he -- buddhism. he turned to other treatments

we're back. 6:44. wrap your hands around a cup of coffee this morning, we are talking about temperatures in the low to mid- 40s where you live and boy it is brisk to get the weekend starts, olga is in for howard this morning. how are you? the rest of the day some sunshine yes? >> we're going to keep the sunshine around, it's going to look gorgeous, sunglasses you definitely need them but the early morning hours still a 5- mile-per-hour breeze going out there. and that is really leading to some cool conditions. it definitely is a chilly one for the kids at the bus stop this morning. we're looking at temperatures this hour in the 40s and we're going stick to the 50s for much of the day. we will get a little bit more sunshine later on this

afternoon to improve conditions somewhat. but in all it's going to be a fairly chilly day. here's the day planner for right now. we are looking at about the 40th, 47, 48 degrees in and around the beltway right now with plenty of sunshine. a few passing clouds from time to time through midday and late day. but not too much of an opportunity to warm up. our winds today predominantly out of the north and northwest will shift a little bit to a westerly wind toward the afternoon. but for the most part, we're looking at temperatures right around 61 degrees. for the city center, later on this afternoon. we could see slightly warmer temperatures down to the south and to the east. definitely a clear and calm night tonight. that means that tonight's temperatures, well, it's going to be a lot more chilly than what we've experienced over the last several days. satellite and radar for the short-term is staying quiet and we're fortunate for that. keep the sunshine around as we get to the afternoon hours though things will really start to improve for us. we are looking at a forecast for today that does feature a lot of sunshine.

although the morning starts off on a chilly side and a few of the clouds will pass through later on this afternoon. we're pretty much in for a great finish to the workweek and yes another fantastic weekend ahead. great to get out and look at the fall foliage. the forecast for today. 47 degrees for washington and baltimore. should see about 46 degrees at hagerstown and a little bit warmer down to the south but the morning temperatures are what you really need to look out for tomorrow morning. futurecast brings in a little bit of cloud cover but not too much. we're talking about partly cloudy skies overnight. and then mostly sunny for tomorrow as well. so a quiet stretch ahead. although the high temperatures are going to be on the cool side for today, the three day forecast will feature a bit of a bump. lows in the 40s tonight. followed by low 60s for tomorrow as well. but that seven day forecast definitely looks like one that's going to stay dry for the short-term. no chance of rain until monday. monika? we're going to take a look at the big picture first. the beltway where there are no major problems.
