moment. breaking news at this hour. d.c. police are on the scene of a fatal shooting in northwest washington. it happened just 30 minutes ago at georgia avenue and w street in northwest. that is near the howard university homecoming. the celebrations are underway. we're not sure if there's any relationship. we're told one person has been fatally shot and we'll have more details as they become available. we have a live crew headed to the scene. back to that other story. a who's who among city leaders were at the gala tonight. the city is on a roll, but for high unemployment in some areas and a political scandal that won't end until the u.s. attorney says it's over. >> they packed the annual d.c. chamber of commerce dinner tonight. >> this is the business solution, not a social work solution. >> 11% unemployment rate could be reduced, cut a lot of the red tape that is tieing the

hands of local businesses. >> we want lower regulations, for one. make it easier for businesses to be here. >> if you look at a company like living social. they had 40 or 50 employees, now they have 700. >> who could miss this scene? mayor vincent gray engaged in conversation with former campaign chairman, lorraine green. >> we were supposed to talk about the chamber event. >> both have seen their reputations battered. a former candidate for mayor himself. brown claims he was paid during the campaign. then given a job in the gray administration for helping undermine the campaign of adrian fenty. mayor gray and lorraine green said any wrong doing. >> they concluded the investigation and the conclusion was that i have no involvement. we look forward to getting the results. we realize, bruce, this is very painful process. i wish it would move along

faster. >> president of the chamber of commerce early on helped convince mayor gray the changes after learning children of high ranking staff members got jobs in d.c. government. she said this in the sulaimon brown's allegation. >> we think that he can move forward and i'm going to do everything i can to help him do that for this city. >> early this week, 9news closed another key figure. brooks agreed to wear a wire for the federal government. brooks was in the gray campaign. he was on the staff. sulaimon brown has produced money orders, which he says were given to him by howard brooks. we have not been able to reach howard brooks for a comment. days after 11-year-old william mcquain was found murdered, his teammates took to the field for a football game today. brittany morehouse was there, so was the last person believed to have talked to william. >> it's a tragedy. >> it's tough.

>> their last game of the regular season and the tough loss for the panthers. losing a game doesn't compare to losing 11-year-old william mcquain. >> he was a member of the team. part of our family, and a good kid. >> a good kid that was found buried in a wooded area off 355 near clarksburg on tuesday. almost one week to the day after his mother was found slain in their apartment. for these young players and their parents, those six days inbetween the two discoveries were filled with fear and hope. these buttons remind them of the search. >> i was home when i found out and very difficult. because i spoke to him on october 1. >> that saturday, william was a no show for their game. she called his mother's cell and he answered. i'm not coming today, he told her. she believed william was killed that very same day. it's a haunting memory for hill whose own son turns 11 today. >> i took my son to the sight

where he was found and that really brought a lot of closure for him. so he's been much better. >> since many of those players know the truth, they also have many questions. >> how? why? who could have done something like this? you know, as coaches, we don't want to get into a bunch of details. >> for the rest of the season, coaches will wear william's pin. they want to move forward, but not forget his young life. brittany morehouse, 9news now. >> police have arrested william mcquain's stepfather for both murders. curtis lopez could face the death penalty, although it's rare in the state of maryland. fairfax county firefighter died while on duty at the fire house. officials say there's no evidence of foul play. firefighters found 49-year-old pendergrass in the bunk room this morning. efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. officials say his death appears to be from natural causes.

there will be an autopsy. he had been with the fire department for more than 20 years. a cab driver is found shot to death in northeast washington and tonight police are trying to determine exactly what happened. the driver and his taxi from the cab company were found around 4:00 this morning. anacostia avenue in northeast. the name of the cab driver has not been released. now for the latest in the nearly three week old search for baby lisa. the 11 month old missouri girl disappeared from her home october 4. her parents say they last saw the baby in her crib inside the family's residence. earlier this week, cadaver dogs picked up the decomposing flesh. meantime, nearby residents continue to hold a vigil outside the family's residence. >> when they say that baby lisa is underneath that bed,

then we'll pray. but they haven't shown me no body, nothing else. my goal is for baby lisa, not for debbie, not for cadaver dogs, we are wanting to find her and bring her home. >> the baby's mother admitted in a television interview that she had been drinking the night her daughter disappeared and three people reported to police that they spotted a man carrying a baby fitting little lisa's description near the family's home the same day she was reported missing. one day after the obama administration announced u.s. troops in iraq are coming home by the end of the year, the gop candidates vying for his job are criticizing his handling of the withdrawal. armando trull reports why the president is under attack. >> all 40,000 soldiers will be gone by december 31. >> iraqi people have the chance to forge their own future. >> washington and baghdad were unable to work out the terms

under which u.s. soldiers could have remained. al-maliki was unable to convince his parliament to grant american soldiers immunity from prosecution or lawsuits. to withdraw has become a talking point for some republican presidential candidates. >> the president's -- there was failure to communicate the needs of their military and our own or simply a political recalculation. >> going to leave iraq vulnerable. very vulnerable. secondly, shouldn't announce to the enemy. >> today al-maliki stressed he still wants american training and support for iraqi troops while the country transitions to a stable democracy. on this point, both sides agree. >> america will stand with our allies and friends, including iraq in defense of our common

security and interest. >> about 1700 americans will remain in iraq to continue to cement the ties between both countries. >> armando trull reporting. howard university's homecoming festivities are well underway tonight. today's homecoming parade kicked things off this morning on georgia avenue in northwest. thousands of people lined the streets as the series of marching bands and entertainment made their way from university's main campus to the streets of the park and blooming dale. later this evening, university's fraternities and sororities performed a step show. coming up tonight, hundreds of volunteers making a difference in people's lives all over the country. we'll find out what is happening in our area this weekend. and next, a flash mob for a good cause. we'll explain. stay with us. clear skies and calm winds.

more than 100 people gathered at the reston town center to host a flash mob nor a worthy cause. it was designed to call attention to the avon walk in 2012 to promote breast cancer awareness. members of the george washington dance team participated in today's flash mob. they encouraged d. c. area residents to sign up for the 2012 walk for breast cancer. avon foundation for women awarded more than $62 million to local organizations and institutions for breast cancer research and awareness programs. >> today is make a difference day. the nation's largest day of volunteering. launch back in 1992 by our parent company and u.s.a. today weekend team. it helped hundreds of americans. andrea mccarren took part in the event today at the elementary school in southeast washington. >> you can see it in the

some good news for prince william county food bank tonight. thanks to a generous community response, the food bank will be able to reopen a week earlier than expected. the food bank was forced to close its doors earlier this week when it ran out of food. local media, including 9news now put the word out and donations came pouring in. today volunteers helped sort and bag more than 12,000 pounds of food. the food pantry also received some $50,000 in donations. >> our shelves have -- we were able to fill them yesterday so that the majority of them were full again, which was wonderful. and now we are stocking our surplus areas. so we are able to bring food and store it in the shelter and don't have to worry right now where the next batch of food is

going to come from. >> the food bank is expected to reopen on tuesday at 1:00. if you want to learn how to donate food or money to the food pantry, go to our website. that's what we are talking about when we talk about giving power to the people. >> that's great story. going to have great weather for us tomorrow? >> i think we're going to continue this fantastic weekend. we had a good stretch. the last three have been wonderful. a little cool this morning. a little cool in the evening. it's autumn, we expect that. temperatures dropped off since sunset. i mentioned earlier about the calm winds and clear skies. we had a large tumble in our temperatures over the last four hours. most everyone sitting into the 40s with the exception of inside the beltway city center, still into those lower 50s. everyone is going to take a tumble further as we head in toward the overnight hours. right now, temperatures aren't too bad. bareable if you are getting ready to walk that dog a take a

stroll. satellite and radar in the clear. there are some clouds trying to push on over through the mountains, not making any progress. we're going to keep it clear overnight tonight. the thing you need to know is that we do definitely have some milder temperatures on the way. although it will be a cold start to your sunday morning. tomorrow afternoon is going to wrap up to be nice. take advantage through the week, monday and tuesday we'll see temperatures bump up even higher. we're talking maybe 70 degrees or slightly higher than that. and then i'm tracking changes on the way that will bring rain into our forecast. here's what we have in store for you tomorrow morning. it will be mostly sunny. a little bit chilly with those north winds at 5 miles per hour. we are definitely going to see cooler temperatures starting off tomorrow morning. 45 for the city center. about 39 around frederick. then as we move on through the day tomorrow, sunshine breaks out and temperatures move into the 60s.

round around 64 degrees for most of the metropolitan area. we will see temperatures slightly warmer down to the south and off toward the east. here we are with our future cast. not much to talk about here. all the way through the day tomorrow is looking good with that sunshine. a few late day clouds are possible into the early morning hours. but if you get the opportunity to take that drive and head off in towards the mountains, you'll see some pretty good fall color. not quite at peek here just yet. the next three days ahead look great. 7 70 for monday and 72 as we get into tuesday and changes on the way in that seven-day forecast. when the next front comes closer, wednesday into thursday, it's going to bring up rain chances for us and even push those temperatures back down. we're talking about 60s and even 50s for daytime highs. so we're going from above average to below average. i'm going to enjoy the rest of this weekend. >> thanks a lot. >> how are you feeling? i know you aren't a regular
